I heard they changed owners and renovated some parts including new paint since the last time I was there about four years ago. While the takoyaki was still delicious, the chicken wings are much smaller than it used to be since it's barely larger than a thumb now and it's a little less salty. The Vegas roll is still delicious and crispy, and so is the dragon roll. The torched salmon nigiri was spot on, and so was the rest of the rolls and nigiri. Overall, it's still decent but it's not as good as it used to be.

I visited Kampala Sushi bar for dinner one day. This restaurant offers an assortment of sushi, warm entrees, and appetizers. They also have a fully stocked bar which includes domestic and non domestic beers, wines, and liquors. I ordered the shrimp tempura to start and it was hot and crispy! I also ordered the Yaki Udon which came with miso soup and a starter salad. The miso soup was warm and yummy. The Yaki Udon was a little sweet for my pallet but still good. Finally the sushi was good- I got an assortment of sushi with eel, shrimp, and salmon. The overall atmosphere was nice and staff were friendly. Parking is street parking but there are some garages around the neighborhood within walking distance of this restaurant. They do offer a Omakase (let the chef cook for you) at a fixed price which is nice. I may try that next time!

Kampai is one of my favorite sushi places in the city. My favorite role is the Sunset roll, but everything I've had from a sushi standpoint has been great. Howver, the rest of the food there is not as high quality. We've tried a few things and they are just OK. So I would definitely stick to the sushi when going. They have good service and the servers are very nice. There is a limited drink menu and they do not take online reservations, but they will take reservations if you call.

The food YES. So yummy in my tummy, I am a big sushi lady!!! The inside was very nice, and the service was good too! The waiter was kind and everyone checked on us. We had lots of sushi! I want tO try the hotpot soon, as I have not had it before/ maybe next time!!!!! I will go back and get some. GRATE place for a date!!! Kind of expensive but for a special night I'd go! Also had some good Saki hot and and cold, the cold one was coconut flavors. Pretty good and different! You should try it

ordered through Uber eats 4/3/26. no issues with speed/delivery etc....but this is the size of sushi you get - quarters and my thumb for size reference. I understand the current administration has made everything economically more difficult...but, this is insane....will make some pasta for dessert i guess, and won't be going back there, sadly.

My friends and I went the other day (on a Monday at around 6 PM). It was quiet, and there was ample seating, charming décor, and very good service. We had a wide variety of rolls (see photo) and enjoyed each one. I highly recommend trying the "OMG Roll"--which arrives in flames--if you are in a small party.

all staff member were super sweet and smiley! my boyfriend and i got the sake flight and the lycee drink. i wouldn't recommend the sake flight unless you're familiar with sake and or getting food to go with it. (it's like shots of rubbing alcohol) cute vibes and very clean! would recommend

Always amazing! I come here often and have had sushi all over the world including Japan. This place is always solid, they deserve better reviews. The miso soup is always hot and comforting, the house salad is fresh, and I always get the shumai. My favorite rolls are the OMG and Vegas. 10/10

I've been here twice now and will be back soon! The food is excellent at a very reasonable price. If you go please order the fried rice it's the best I've ever had at a sushi restaurant. The atmosphere and location are awesome and the sushi is insane! I rarely write reviews but I've been sitting thinking about how amazing this meal was and had to share. This place is a must try!

The service and ambiance was excellent and it got us excited to try this place. We're new to St. Louis from California and dying to find "our" new sushi spot near us in the CWE. The sushi was okay -- it could have been fresher with more taste. The prices are also a bit high. I would come back for a special occasion only and not a casual dinner. I would be willing to try new dishes again.

One of my favorite neighborhood spots! Great service and amazing sushi. Have not found a roll we haven't liked.

Kampai has become my go-to sushi spot in CWE thanks to its consistently efficient service and reliable quality of rolls. The staff is really sweet and the food comes out quite quickly. There's plenty of seating available, so even though it gets pretty filled, I've never experienced a wait. The space is clean, warm, and comfortable. It's nice for a casual meal or even for a slightly more intimate date. I've tried the uni nigiri, which I honestly didn't love because it tasted like the uni had been soaked in sake. Their spicy tuna rolls were also a miss on me (maybe I had them on a bad day). However, the rolls that keep me coming back are the West Pine Roll and the Joy Roll. They're simple and similar in flavor, but well-done seared salmon rolls overall. Another honorable mention is the OMG Roll, which is really flavorful and has great presentation. Their takoyaki is also solid. I also really appreciate that they give you the option of complimentary miso soup or salad while you wait. The miso soup's got great umami with its inclusion of pieces of mushroom in it. Is it sushi that is going to blow your mind? No, but it's a great spot to come back to every time for consistently decent food and nice service.

Crazy Roll, Tornado Roll, Sunset Roll, Crazy Roll without yellowtail, 2 Toro Nigiri, 2 Sake Salmon Nigiri
    Tina W.

Sushi was fresh and delicious. We got the crazy roll, tornado roll, sunset roll, toro nigiri and salmon nigiri. Different textures and flavors really complemented each other in each roll. We also got chocolate lava cake for dessert which was warm, gooey, rich and amazing. Service was 10/10. Staff was nice, helpful and let us stay a bit past closing to finish up our food and drinks! Ambiance was calm and cozy. They dim the lights a bit at night and play calming music. I would definitely come back and get the same order plus a few more things!

Everything was simple but really well done. I only tried the sushi this time, but the hot and cold tasting menus looked really tempting. We ordered a few sashimi and we expected them to be a little fancier. That was on us. The server as with Indo, above and beyond nice, I think they are accustomed to a lot of questions. Ours was amazing, she said "we don't fork shame here" I fork shame, but she refused. Good for her! I also ordered a cocktail. I would arrive to Sado just for this cocktail, it had a coconut pillow top, that was reminiscent of a marshmallow. Delightful compliment to my savory dinner. I was very surprised at the size of Sado on the inside, we made a turn into the seating then a second turn deeper into seating. I did not get to check out the bathrooms, which disappointed me, but the ambiance was very dark and romantic, also unexpected, there were several tables of friend groups.

Ninja does have gluten-free soy sauce, but you'll likely not want much soy sauce because you won't want it hiding the great flavors of Ninja's sushi. Tonight we enjoyed a variety of rolls, most chef's choice: - Kimi roll - Philly roll - Sumo roll - Salmon avocado - Dynamite (no crunch) - two... not one, but two Golden Dragon rolls... with curved slices of mango on top and a fantastic mango sauce Our waitress was intent to find a gluten free sauce for us and provided a combo sauce - half pink / half darker color (unsure the actual flavor but it was good). Before tonight, we have known that Ninja has the cook-at-your-table hibachi grill but we've only ever enjoyed their sushi. Tonight... I ventured to their hot food. Some of the bites are definitely an acquired taste (this meal was my first exposure to eating liver and sea urchin - both very bold and unique flavors) but getting to try new foods was something I really liked about this meal. The restaurant is beautiful, warm, and bright. You get to sit right up at the counter with just 5 other people when you do the nine-course dinner. Each course is prepared in front of you so it's neat to be able to see the chefs prepare the next course while you're eating. When you book the reservation, you get the choice to pick between tempura and yakizakana for one of the courses, and while the tempura was good (which I ordered), the yakizakana was excellent (which my husband ordered). They do a great job explaining what everything is that you're eating, how to eat it, and which order to eat it in. And even though it's all small bites, we left dinner feeling full and satisfied. My personal favorite combination is cooking the shrimp and cod together with lots of vegetables. The veggies are fantastic -- especially the corn on the cob, chestnuts, and broccoli. Another fun feature is the toppings bar where you can customize your sauces and garnishes. I love adding sesame seeds for extra crunch, along with chili oil, fresh cilantro, and spring onions. And honestly, even just slurping down the soup at the end is a treat in itself. The service is really great. However, I had a different experience in April. My friend made a reservation for his birthday today. It was the groups' first time coming and they were all very excited. We called multiple times to make sure a group of 12 was okay. We are all aware that not every restaurant is suitable for such a big group, but were told it was not a problem. As soon as we sat down, we could tell one of the servers was very annoyed at the group. From the start, he would answer with an attitude, harshly put the plates on the table, and was outright disrespectful when we asked about a friend's plate that never arrived. This person ended up leaving and going to eat somewhere else. I was a server before and understand that big groups can be frustrating. Nevertheless, there is no excuse to treat a table so rudely when they have been nothing but nice and understanding. The food was great, but we were all extremely dissapointed, specially me since I've been here numerous times with no problem. I had never seen this server before, so I'm not sure if it was an off day for him or what. Most people said they would not come back, which made me very sad since it's good food.
