Went here for lunch as I was craving sushi! I was immediately greeted as I walked in. This place has a lot of yummy options so it took me a sec to figure out what to get. I settled on the katsuya roll bento box, which comes with not just sushi, but also salad with ginger dressing, seaweed salad, edamame, potato salad, crab Rangoon and a small dessert. Sushi was really good and tasted fresh. The food came out in a timely manner. Restaurant was nice and clean. There are plenty on seats and booths. I always love coming here--this is my go-to spot for bento boxes and katsu. The food is consistently excellent, and the portion sizes are generous. There's tables and booth sitting in the restaurant, but during peak hours I can see it being all full and you have to do take out instead. The cashier was very patient as it was our first time and soon after we ordered we got the food. It's pretty quiet and a great place to hang out with friends. I ordered the Pork Katsu and my husband ordered the Cheese Katsu. We also got an order of Takoyaki to share. The portion for both of the Katsu were huge with balance of salad, side dishes and roll. Katsuya just opened on the Loop and replaced TNT Weiner (what an upgrade!) so I had to try it out. Came on a weekday evening and the store was actually pretty packed as there was a nice flow of customers. You order at the front and then within 5-10 minutes, the bento boxes are out and ready. I ordered the Pork Katsu and at first glance, I was incredibly impressed by how many different ingredients they had. Sure some were in small quantities and the flavors didn't stand out, but to have that many things in a bento was legitimately insane so +1 for that. For mine there were pork cutlet, rice, 2 pieces of sushi, edamame, potato salad, tamago, seaweed salad, leafy salad, pickled daikon, daikon, kimchi, and kamaboko. It was honestly incredible. The pork cutlet itself was okay, it was pretty dry and so the sauce did help although I wish the sauce had more curry flavor rather than just sauce from a bottle. They also needed to give more sauce for all of that pork as well as more sauce for the leafy salad. Overall, the meal itself was okay but if you're looking for variety, this is definitely the place to go. In a way, its like eating a more manageable buffet with all the different dishes they had in the bento. read more

We ordered the chicken katsu, pork katsu, spicy salmon roll and cheese katsu. Personally, I think is the pork katsu is a little better than chicken katsu because the chicken ended up being a little dry. They give a very good amount of protein, on top of that you get a balance of side dishes and rice. You even get 2 pieces of sushi rolls with your bento. Portion was reasonable in my opinion. We were all full after this meal. In Japan, this is normally the standard size for a bento box anyway. So I'm glad that this place stays true to that. I think the price can be justified. The average price for a bento box is $15, which is neither cheap nor overpriced. I'm content with what I ordered and eating a bento is always an interesting experience. By the way, they will give you a bottled water if you ask for it so it's a meal + drink combo as well! My friends ordered the spicy salmon and cheese katsu so I haven't tried these 2 yet but they looked very good. I will save them for next time. Overall, I like Katsuya STL! It's always nice to have something new in the Delmar Loop. Their bento boxes are super convenient so you can dine in or just do takeout. Was able to visit Katsuya during the ice sculpture festival and was not disappointed. One thing that took me by surprise knowing nothing about this place prior to my visit was that it is an "order at the counter" restaurant. The shrimp katsu was a standout. The pork katsu's portion size was very generous - this is the best compliment I can provide on the pork. The fry and quality of the katsu were nothing to write home about. It's no different than any run of the mill homemade recipe. The panko is pantry regular, the pork quality is supermarket regular. This place is in the loop, parking is hit or miss at times. Me and boyfriend with one of my kid went here on Sunday so we parked at the lot around the sweet. Service is friendly. You go to the counter to order and sit down. The people will bring your food to your tablet. There is plastic silverware and sauce at the station next to the ordering counter. There is also set serve water that you can get yourself. There are limited seating but we did manage to find seating. The ambiance light is sufficient. When we lived in St. Louis over 20 years ago, the dining options on Delmar Loop were somewhat limited in scope but enjoyable nonetheless. On our return this week, we were pleased to see how things had evolved and were eager to try some places in this former hangout of ours. After making a circuit of the many restaurants, we settled on Katsuya, a recent addition to the scene. The menu in the window only describes the main item of each bento box - for example, spicy tuna or pork katsu. Of course, there's much more to a bento and when we went to the counter they showed us a picture of a typical box, which had the variety of items that we expected. We placed our orders and waited for our food. It appears that we arrived just in time. The posted hours go until 9:00pm, and we arrived just before 8:00. The next people to arrive were told that the kitchen was closed and they weren't taking any more orders. They were understandably a little irritated and the person behind the counter explained that they didn't have any more food for the evening. It took about 15 minutes for our food to be ready, and we were pleased by what we received. Each bento box was slightly different in terms of the side items. Perhaps that's by design, or perhaps it's because they were running short of items to make everything uniform, but it didn't matter because it made each box unique. Pork katsu bento - the cutlet was nicely done, crispy on the outside and moist and tender on the inside. There was no katsu sauce provided, and the closest approximation at the condiment counter was a BBQ sauce that we decided wasn't the right taste for this dish. It came with a croquette and a kimbap-type roll, rice, a few edamame, sweet egg cake, potato salad, pickled vegetables and a green salad with a ginger dressing. Katsuya roll bento - tempura shrimp and salmon rolls with avocado. This one came with a crab rangoon and a croquette, green salad, potato salad, sweet egg cake, edamame, a little bit of seaweed salad, and a small piece of sponge cake. Very nice. Spicy tuna bento - California roll topped with spicy tuna. I didn't think the tuna was all that spicy, but still good. This one came with a fried gyoza, crab rangoon, green salad, potato salad, edamame, egg cake, and sponge cake. Even though we were eating in, the food was served in disposable containers. It would have been nice to see reusable dishware but perhaps they don't have the dishwashing infrastructure in the back. Prices were very good, ranging from $13 to $15. Back home these would probably go for around $5 more. Service was fine; I got the impression that they were getting a little tired towards the end of the day. All in all, this was a very good experience. Some growing pains are expected for any new restaurant, but in general Katsuya is off to a good start. read more
