A sashimi lovers dream! Sushi koi is a Super cute little sushi shop. My partner and I went on a weeknight and were seated at the bar promptly, but they were packed. Highly recommend calling in a reservation if you are wanting a table to eat at. Service was quick and efficient. For as busy as they were, we felt well taken care of and got our food quickly. We also got to talk to the chef briefly and she was just the sweetest! You can tell she takes pride in her craft. The sushi rolls were fantastic. We got the sumo roll and the crazy roll, both of which were filled with of flavor and textures. The sashimi was some of the best I've had in STL. Huge portions for the price and very fresh. I hate giving bad reviews, but wish I had seen something like this before I got sushi here. Caveats to this are, I live in LA and had just returned from a trip to Japan so my sushi expectations are high. The place was full on a Monday night. I was ordered for takeout though. Ordered the Euclid roll and the hamachi garlic one. The Euclid roll was okay but the I did not like the hamachi one. Miso soup was great though (small portion). I love sushi and nigiri and sashimi. There isn't a sushi place in StL area in the last 30 years that I haven't tried. For taste and presentation, Sushi Koi is absolutely THE BEST. Period. There's a selfish part of me that doesn't want to write this review so I can keep it more of a secret. Jae and Chef Whitney have made their small space into a must-go for any roll junkie, wasabi warrior, or raw bar fan. Chef Whitney's hotate scallop nigiri is always glorious -- perfect prep with roe add-on -- and melts in your mouth. Her Tuna Tartare starter, with special recipe vinaigrette, house made wasabi, and a perfect quail egg is another favorite. My kids, all huge sushi fans now thanks to Sushi Koi, have tried almost every "basic" roll on the menu, but it's not right to call most of them basic because they're not. Too good for that term. Specialty roll favorites: Euclid Roll, Red Bird, and Caterpillar. Feeling like you're hungry? Gotta get the Sumo Roll. We live nearby, so we get takeout more than we dine-in, but every tray is always carefully presented and just as visually lovely as the bites are tasty. Chef Whitney is an artist!! I finally got the chance to try Sushi Koi after a friend recommended it, and it did not disappoint! Just a heads up, since it's in the Central West End, parking can be tricky, so plan ahead. The sushi we ordered: Hamachi Garlic Ponzu Roll - hands down my favorite Dragon Roll - my second favorite Fujiyama Roll - third favorite Central West End Roll - still delicious The flavors were on point and everything tasted so fresh. The service was super sweet and welcoming, which made the experience even better. Also, the takoyaki was pretty good! Solid sushi place and one of my go to sushi spots in St. Louis. Food: wide assortment of sushi options with some more elaborate choices. The portions are always pretty big and the flavors are good. If you're looking for casual, tasty sushi to hit a craving then this is a solid option. Service: never had a problem here, they've always been nice. I've gotten takeout several times and it's usually ready pretty quickly. Ambiance: it's a nice atmosphere with good lighting and artwork. It's a bit small so there's often a wait at peak times. Overall, a good experience at Sushi Koi. We tried a LOT of things and most did not disappoint. You order by filling out a little sheet, and then then the waitress takes it and brings everything out pretty swiftly. Here's what we tried: -Edamame: 7.5/10 - Standard, mostly what you'd expect, except for a few of them were clearly under-steamed. -Seaweed Salad: 9/10 - A pretty perfect seaweed salad (wakame). Can't complain. Fresh and tasty. -Takoyaki: 8.5/10 - Honestly some of the best takoyaki I've had. Come's completely sauced up, and has a crispy outside but very gooey interior. The octopus is chewy, of course, but you have to expect that. -Chicken Teriyaki: 6/10 - The flavor of the sauce was good but the chicken was dry on the outside, almost like it had been pre-cooked and sitting out? -Wagyu Nigiri: 9.5/10 - UGH I just ADORE wagyu. This was such a rich bite. I think it could have used a bit more zing or flavor to accompany the rich meat and rice, but I can barely knock it. -Sunset Roll: 7/10 - Meh. It was okay. Takeaway: The sushi was exploding with fish. I'd say this is probably the best spot in town for sushi. Pros: the value of what you pay for what you get is extremely good. The rolls I got were creative with the ingredients (like those roasted garlic pieces in the hamachi garlic ponzu roll) and as I said prior they do not skimp you on the amount of fish you get with each roll. Cons: management please take notice of this review. The music is comically bad. It has the production value of my 2007 GarageBand beats. Please consider playing something else in your restaurant or playing the music a lot softer. First off, they are very generous on sizes and don't overstuff the sushi with rice. 2 rolls can easily fill you up! The only dish I didn't care for was the garlic roll. This was the only Asian restaurant we went into on Euclid that was actually crowded when we got there, which probably could have told us that this was going to be our favorite spot. Service was quick and very friendly. We had gyoza, and two different rolls. Although the caterpillar roll was delirious, the Fujiyama roll was my very favorite one, and beautifully presented. I wouldn't suggest it as a business meeting spot or a romantic spot, mainly because the crowded space made it relatively noisy, but for anything else, the food was wonderful. The only caution I would add is that if you place an online order, you get charged $1.50 which is not disclosed before you place your order, and then it turned out that they didn't even start my order until after I arrived.
