We were disappointed that the kitchen was closed because the chef wasn't available, so no noodles, no bentos, nothing that requires cooking. We could only order from the appetizer menu and sushi/sashimi menu. There was enough to choose from but still disappointing. Food is average... tastes good but nothing special. Service was great. Very friendly and attentive. Parking situation was not ideal- while it has free parking right outside the door, it is a single row of spots and perpendicular to a busy road. If you back your car out of the spots you are in the traffic. For this reason alone, I won't return. If that doesn't bother you, it is a fine place to have Japanese food. The decorations are cute. We had the pleasure of visiting Sushi Hana in Affton recently. It's a little non-descript adjacent to another business on the north side of Gravois Rd. When we walked in on a Friday evening we were surprised. It was a warm and comfortable feeling little place. We were Greeted and seated quickly in a booth at the back. The place was busy but didn't feel like it. The staff was friendly and made us feel at home. Lot's of smiles and attention added to the great food and sake. We started with warm sake, miso soup and squid salad. It was all tasty, especially the squid salad. Marinated diced squid on a sweet and savory sauce. Next came our mains . . . we had hald a dozen pieces of niguri, My favorite was the eel. We also ordered several rolls . . . Spider Roll, Eel Avacado Roll, Salmon Skin Roll, and Futomaki. Found this quaint, hole in the wall sushi spot on Gravois! Went on a Saturday for lunch to pick up/carryout. I placed my order online through platform listed on website and it was super easy to use. There is minimal parking at the front of the store and is by the street so will have to be careful when reversing car in case of traffic. There were no customers when I got there to pick up order but they had only been opened for 30 min and it was very gloomy/rainy outside. Loved the cherry blossom roll but the TNT roll was ok, the rice was slightly dry for that one and didn't taste that special but decent. I've only ever ordered from here for pickup, but I keep coming back for the lunch special, and it's been awesome every time! The crab Rangoon is definitely on the savory side but still delicious, and I love that they include sweet-and-sour sauce with it. The sushi is always fresh and tasty, and the highlight of my visits has to be the staff. They are super friendly and welcoming every time I pick up my order. I really appreciate the little touches, like the smiley faces they leave on the receipts and boxes--it just adds to the overall experience. This place by far has the most consistency for sushi, therefore became our go to place for sushi. The sushi tastes fresh for our area. Sushi Hana was such a pleasant surprise. The first thing I noticed was how healthy and well-taken-care-of all the plants were, it gives the whole place a really fresh, calming vibe. The restaurant itself is pretty standard in layout, but the décor is super cool and adds a lot of personality. The food is affordable and tastes incredibly fresh. The veggies were fresh fresh, and the fish was just as impressive. Presentation was definitely A+, every dish looked beautiful. Our server was extremely nice and took great care of us the entire time, which made the experience even better. One small note: the parking situation can be a bit annoying since you park facing against the street. I'm not sure how busy that street gets during the day, but it could be a hassle depending on the time. Overall, though, this has been the best sushi experience I've had in STL. Lunch at Sushi Hana was a treat! I was the only one there when I first sat down but the restaurant filled up quickly. My server was efficient and friendly I always have to try Pork Gyoza if its available. It came out quickly and they had a great flavor, sauce is key and it was also good. I have no idea why it took us years to come back to this sushi joint. We've been here before, had a nice experience and enjoyed the food but haven't been back since! Well, last night we fixed that. Parking is at the front of the restaurant. Last night was busy so most of their limited spots were taken by the time we left. But at 6 o'clock, there were about 5 spots left. We were immediately seated, unfortunately by some loud group. The place isn't too big so even if you're seated farther away from a certain crowd, unless you're outside, you're bound to hear them. Our waiter brought us some water immediately and we placed our order consisting of 4 rolls: yummy, rainbow, cherry blossom, and one with cream cheese and tuna. I can't remember what it was called but my husband picked it and it was actually very good. We started with a seaweed salad for me and a miso soup for hubby. I had originally wanted some squid salad but they were out. About 2 minutes after our starters were delivered, came the sushi rolls! Impressively quick especially since the place was busy. We enjoyed all the rolls we selected and ate every last one of them. The fish pieces on top of the rainbow roll were plentiful. Service was nice. They were able to keep up despite the number of patrons versus 2 wait staff. The only time we waited was for our check to come. More people started coming in and between seating people, bringing orders to tables, etc. it did end up causing a bit of a delay. If you haven't yet, check out this place! I found this restaurant a couple weeks ago and have gone back 5 times since then! The parking situation is a bit difficult, but the food is worth it. I work nearby, so I pop over to pick up takeout during lunch. Their lunch combination bento box has been my goto, lately. I have tried the shrimp tempura twice, grilled mackerel, and chicken teriyaki lunch combinations that all come with a salad, rice, 4 California rolls, and miso soup. The shrimp tempura is my favorite, and the grilled mackerel is very good. The chicken teriyaki had wonderful texture, but it wasn't my favorite amongst the three. The parking kind of sucks because you literally park 90 degrees from Gravois and have to back out directly onto Gravois. They have all your standard sushi rolls and so far I have enjoyed each of them. Personally, I am pretty basic with my sushi-- a good spicy tuna roll And some salmon sashimi make me very happy. My husband always loves their California roll and dragon roll. For the kids, they have good noodle bowls. My 3 year old enjoys the teriyaki udon noodle bowl every time. A place that I wouldn't have found without the help of Yelp! Sushi Hana isn't a place that really stands out, and like Zack G. said, it really doesn't look like much from the outside. There are only about 3 parking spots right out front of the restaurant, the other parking spots are next to the building in the grass, which you almost feel like you have to pop a curb in order to get to them. I really wasn't expecting much from the looks of the exterior, but the inside was nice and clean and felt like any normal American sushi restaurant. Our server was super friendly, and even joked with us about "no shots tonight?" Shots might have been a good call since it was one of our first dates without kids, but we probably wouldn't have made it home without falling asleep. (Adulting is hard.) We knew we wanted sushi, but there were so many ways we could go. My spouse and I decided to go all out! Sushi boat it was! We asked the server about which size we should get, and she said that both were around the same amount of food minus the extra pieces of nigiri, but the medium sushi boat was as better deal. I ran some rough calculations, with the small sushi boat you save ~$9 while with the medium sushi boat you save ~$14. We went with the medium. The medium was a bold move. My spouse and I were struggling to finish, but there was no way we could take home sushi. We managed to finish every piece of sushi, but I was pretty darn stuffed. AMAZING!! LIKE SHOCKINGLY AMAZING! Ok so after a fun day at Six Flags my extra son (my daughters friend) was still owed a birthday dinner. So I asked him what he wanted and he says sushi. From our location I find several spots on the way back to the house. Out of 3 choices this is where he chose and we're so happy he did. First the customer service was great. Immediately greeted and seated. Drink orders came out right away. Appetizers came right after that. We never had to ask for refill, plates, or anything the entire night and they were very nice. The kids loved EVERYTHING, we had no food to take home. The squid salad and seaweed salad were so good and fresh we had to get 2nd orders. The dumplings were also a big hit. The miso soup, was delicious and had a couple special touches I had not had before. Every sushi roll was perfectly portioned with rice, filling and sauce. The spicy tuna was a big favorite. A very simple dish that had excellent execution. I have to say my children and my extra children have amazing manners and I think the server and the owner appreciated that because once I let them get ice cream and told them it was for his birthday, they all came over and offered him ice cream too and gave a spoon to each of us. And we all discovered that the fried bananas and red bean ice cream were both delicious and really good together. And yes it was a small gesture but I appreciated it very much. Came here on a Friday night for dinner. Sushi Hana is a smaller sized restaurant on Gravois. The parking lot is small. There are a few booths and tables inside. I liked the cozy quiet atmosphere. I have been going here since they opened and originally with Ken the portions were appropriate so I went up today after a while I haven't been there. I got a seaweed salad for $5.50 and a cherry blossom roll for $13. The cherry blossom roll was half the size with maybe an 8th inch of fish surrounding each piece. The seaweed salad I can eat in two bites was 550 and maybe 6 ounces not going here anymore. We miss you Ken! Greed does not make a restaurant good. read more
