I stopped by this place for dinner while searching for a new sushi spot near home. The signage wasn't very clear, so I had to rely on the map to find it. Once inside, I was directed to a table in the corner. The service was prompt, and we received our orders quickly. A younger gentleman approached us and seemed a bit confused when I asked about the drink menu. We were looking for sake, and they had a decent selection of both wine and sake, but nothing particularly exciting. We decided to try the Hana white peach sake, which was a pleasant surprise. The food menus were in a state of disrepair, with staples holding them together. We started with some appetizers, including pork gyoza, crab rangoon, and spicy edamame. The pork gyoza was delicious, but the crab rangoon was quite crunchy and flakey with not much flavor. The spicy edamame tasted like it had been soaked in Franks' Hot sauce or Sriracha sauce, which I wasn't a fan of. I wish I had ordered them regular instead. For sushi, I opted for a shrimp tempura roll and a rainbow roll, both of which satisfied my craving. Overall, it was a decent experience for the price, but nothing stands out that would bring me back again and again like other places. So I have been to this establishment five times, the last one previous to today was roughly 4 months ago, so I'm both horrified and embarrassed that I took my best friend her as his first STL Ramen restaurant and the experience was an absolute disaster. We came into the restaurant approximately 7:53/54; asked for drinks five or so minutes later; it takes 20 more minutes for the waitress to come to our table and she was absolutely scrambling. We wait roughly 15 minutes more and someone attempted to bring us someone else's sushi, the waitress comes back to our table and re reads the wrong order to confirm, we recite our order again as she blames the person that did not even take our order, which was odd. I confirm if my friend wants to stay we decide too when she states it will only be 7 more minutes. So it ends up being 10 more minutes, she comes back in a haste again, confirm which sushi we ordered and it is again incorrect and she blames someone else. Mind you this restaurant is not back or busy but extremely unorganized and slow in service. So as she is midway through her excuse that she couldn't read the other person's hand writing, while she is the only one that took our order all three times I explain it was well over 48 mins since we sat down and that we were leaving. It also comes with a salad, edamame and i think we are supposed to get miso soup if memory serves more correctly but it never appeared. The tonkatsu was fantastic! Cooked perfectly, felt like a nice cutlet. The sauce provided was something to take home to have with steak. So good! The edamame was as you'd expect but here they don't skimp with the tiny little beans. The salad.... Oh my. It is not the usual iceberg lettuce with the soaked on ginger dressing. You just have to try it to "get it". Nice pieces of romaine. The roll was the disappointment of the day. There was something wrong with how the nori was presented. it felt dry and as i chewed i choked on it going down. Not to be too graphic but I had half a piece go down so I gagged and had to go spit it up. I'm sure it's through no fault of their own but it just wasn't a great roll this day. The broth was spicy and flavorful without being overwhelming. My kids both did build your own. We all were underwhelmed with the amount of protein in our bowls. I had a thin slice of chasu and one shrimp in my bowl. My daughter ordered tempura shrimp and 2 were in her bowl. My son ordered chicken and there was definitely not $4 worth of chicken. All of our broths were delicious, but the eggs had an odd texture and were really cold even after being in our steaming hot broth. I came here with low expectations, but I have to say it would be generous to say midtown sushi was even mid. The sushi rolls were alright. The sashimi was 1) overpriced for the tiny piece of fish they give you and 2) unappetizing. I've been eating raw fish since I've been three so trust me, I've had a lot of bad fish, and I still almost couldn't swallow the tuna. The takoyaki were tiny (about the size of the distal part of my thumb) and cost about $8! The udon was nearly water with barely any flavor, and it was shocking there were no other toppings (not even fish cake!). The tempura was the only saving grace but only because how can you mess up deep fried veggies? This place gets two stars only because the service was very nice and I've (somehow) had worse sushi before. read more

The noodles were perfectly al dente and the pork belly was tender and flavorful but the broth was missing depth and umami. There's only so much toppings and noodles can do for a bowl of ramen if the broth is lacking, unfortunately. Is it good for a late night snack or a hangover cure? Yes.
