I went here for an herbal co situation and Dr. Amy recommended that I take herbs twice a day to help an existing sleep issue. Her fee was $90 and the herbs cost $92.50. I stopped by the counter where the cashier is to ask for a specific herbal formula only they produce under the brand name "Meridian Herbal Products". One of the ladies is extremely rude and felt the need to "belittle" me. I have stopped by and gotten products here a couple of times before, but they are giving me reasons to not do it anymore. Customer service suffers credibility in this pharmacy. I called in three times to emphasize the patient's name needs to be changed, you orally agreed, but never did it. Twice already, when I picked up the meds, it's under the wrong person's name. That wasted me half an hour on the phone with you. As a result, I cannot get reimbursed for these meds from insurance since you failed to give me the correct name. You made no apologies, and you are a pain to deal with. What you said bears no weight. Absolute best place to get herbs in NYC. There are natural remedies for all types of aches and pains and the people working there are extremely helpful and knowledgeable. My knee was stiff and sore from all the walking and subway stairs and they suggested an oil that stopped the pain when I used it. They also carry a huge variety of teas. A qigong teacher in Malaysia sent me a prescription. I asked a couple of friends, they all said go to Kamwo. I took my printed list of 8 herbs and went to their Grand St location. A short walk from the D train subway. My first time ever filling a TCM prescription, so I was a little apprehensive. As I went in, I saw a sign for customer service. I walked up and gave my list. The polite man entered the ingredients into the computer. Printed a custom list for me. 10 minutes later my order it was ready. This was on a Saturday afternoon, a busy time for them. Even then the wait time was not bad. They put the powder in a sealed bottle, gave me several small serving spoons. Very professionally done. Excellent customer service. I walked around the store, I noticed all the staff was knowledgeable and very polite in the way they interacted with customers. I am sorry I don't understand the angry one star reviews. Dr. Leung (the founder/herbalist) is the best, he's very thorough but the lady at the herb counter is the WORST. She claimed to be the doctor's wife so that she could give me attitude. All I wanted to do was to take a photo of the herb prescription and she grabbed the list and threw that on the floor. Then she yelled at me and asked me "do you want these herbs or not? If not get the hell out of here!" How can you treat your customer and patient like this? If I wasn't desperate I wouldn't be seeing a Chinese doctor. The guys who were working next to her were all quiet because she was the boss' wife. I feel so sorry for the people who work there and understand Chinese. Mrs Leung, no one will remember your name or your face but we will always remember how you treat us. KAMWO is certainly far from perfect but.... At least you can pick up your herbs at KAMWO in person instead of ordering online and never getting the stuff you paid for.. I used to buy from CRANE HERB in large quantities, but they recently totally screwed me after I spent $120 on my last order. The stuff never got delivered to me and when I complained, they told me that they are not responsible and that I would have to pay again if I wanted my order re-sent!! (Their shipping is not cheap + plus they charge a handling fee. Yet, they ship the cheapest, crappiest way). I wont be shopping there ever again! So, I started going to KAMWO... They have a lot of medicine ready made already so you don't even need to wait for them to collect and assemble the ingredients. I have been going to Kamwo for years. I suffer from seasonal allergies every spring and fall. Every "western" antihistamine I have tried has bothersome side effects. They are not cheap and they vary from so-so to totally ineffective; ALL of them affect the prostate (NOT good news for an older guy like me). A Canadian friend recommended I try Bi-Yan-Pian, a Chinese herbal tea pill for allergic rhinitis. Glory be, it WORKS! No side effects, at all. Kamwo used to be a respectable place in New York Chinatown but it seems to have become a regular shop. Sadly to say, Kamwo HAS LOST ITS UNIQUENESS. My mom used to go there to grab herbs like 北杏/North Almond, goji berry...etc. for her home-made soups for common ailments but those herbs are now replaced by pre-made herbal pills and cosmetic products i.e. Nin Jiom, Badger, Bon Vital that can be found cheaper in other Chinese or American stores. Also, the Kamwo brand herbs pills and creams on the shelves are pre-made in a bottle and hard to tell their ingredients and resource. The few good things remain are the Chinese Dr. prescriptions work well on my mom when she has bitter taste in the mouth; the lady manager, the herbalists are friendly and knowledgable. read more

I had a negative experience at this place this past week. A young girl was helping me at the front desk, then this older woman interrupted our process. They were speaking in what I believe is Chinese so I did not understand what they were discussing. Basically, the young girl helping me stopped what she was doing with me to take care of the older woman who interrupted us. I stared in disbelief at the 5 minute exchange. The employee did not apologize or offer any sort of explanation as to why she left me to help another customer. It was absolutely grotesque, rude, and offensive. Horrible service - liars. I recently was prescribed a 3 month supply of pills but my body is not settling well with them and have unopened bottles left. I looked online and saw they have a 30 day return policy. I called the store and a man named Sam started aggressively yelling and saying they have a two week return policy and can only take original receipts, not credit card receipts. I said online it shows a 30 day policy. FYI I have dealt with Sam before and every time he ends up yelling and being horribly rude. Don't answer the phone or deal with people then. He said the in store policy is different and that it's on the receipt. I have never been told any of this when I've purchased herbs here. My friends and I have purchased from here for many years. Sam and his changing customer service policies are unacceptable. There is no concept of customer or reasonable service. He didn't care if the meds were harming my body. Most of the people I asked they tell me to go to this place, and reliable comparing to other herbal stores (you don't even know if the medicine is legit or not) . What was once a herbal/medicinal shop that was well respected in the community has now become a mainstream place that tries to be a few different places in one. Which in turn lost them a lot of customers. Though I cannot say they cured all the problems I've had, they sure produce much better end results than what most Western medicine has been attempted on me and without the side effects. The prices are either average or higher than most herb stores in Chinatown but I'm on the borderline with this place because out of all the times I've been treated for my conditions/ ailments from this place, it only worked less than 1/2 the time and I can only recommend it I was cured at least 1/2 of the time or if the herbalist looks like they really know what they doing. read more

SUCH A RIP OFF! I came on a Wednesday to see if they have medicine for a cold that I had, and was referred by the workers in the pharmacy to see a herbalist in the clinic that will write me an herbal formula. I end up paying $70 for the consultation and what I've got is NOT a written herbal formula but, Gan Mao Ling, a box of pills that cost me $3.95 and a few bags of the already made wind heat tea that cost $2.50 per bag from the pharmacy. So why did I have to pay $70 dollars for a consultation when I could of just grab those "prescribed" medication myself in the pharmacy? Those were the EXACT herbs that the workers in the pharmacy suggested for me to take. Such scammers. Never going back. read more

The Pros of Kamwo Herbs is that the staff there speak Mandarin, Cantonese, and English. So it's easy for you to get what you need. Warning, not everyone speaks every language I mentioned. I spoke with the Chinese staff and translated for my boyfriend. The store is very clean and the staff are helpful. We came to check out their tea selection and it was rather small, just a small corner of their store. They were upfront about their limited selection and also honest about the types they had to offer. We were thinking of getting a special package but the staff told us that the loose version is much better quality and that we were going to pay mostly for the pretty package and not the quality. I like that it's clean but I wish there was more selection. Can not comment on their herbs selection. read more

There's a herbal doctor in the back who writes the formulas when you tell him what's wrong with you. You then go to the front for them to pack the formulas and you have a choice for them to boil it for you or you can boil it yourself at home. They also sell lots of chinese herbal medications/oils whatever here. The doc's really nice but i hate that they don't close the doors during your visit...so much for privacy! So minus 1 for that. I'm not a big believer in herbs but my dad forced me to go to get some herbs to sorta energize me up since i've been a walking zombie as of late. I went here for a class on The Healing Power of Tea. I really had no idea what to expect. But it was $20, and then they give you a $20 voucher to use on their online site. And what acupuncturist couldn't use some more supplies!? It is packed with herbs from floor to ceiling, but not in a disorganized or overwhelming way. The woman working behind the counter was so friendly. My friend and I had trouble registering online, but that wasn't a problem at all when we just showed up for the class. I was really excited to be here, because in school you always hear about the famous Kamwo Herbal Pharmacy, and many of my classmates and teachers would always talk about it. It is also extremely convenient to get to from the Hoboken Path. The woman speaking was an acupuncturist and herbalist as well, and she was a great speaker; very engaging, and funny. There were others in the class who are not in the field of holistic medicine, but that didn't matter, because the class made the information available and understandable for everyone. If you are an herbalist/acupuncturist, or just someone who is looking to expand their knowledge of holistic methods, I would definitely recommend taking a class here. I've heard about this place for about 10 years from several different acupuncturists. I finally went today after yet another acupuncturist recommended them. I now wish I had come here 10 years ago. Dr. Shi took my pulse on both arms, studied my tongue, reviewed my medical history and asked me some questions about my symptoms. He wrote an herbal prescription consisting of about 10 herbs to be combined. I was there for about 1.5 hours - it took me about 30 minutes to finish the paperwork, I was with the doctor for about 20 minutes and then I had to wait approximately 30+ minutes for them to make my personal herbal prescription. I came home and took the first herbal dosage and within about 60 seconds (no exaggeration - it was that quick) my entire body felt differently (better). It was like a subtle "whoosh" down my body. I seriously have not felt this good in 10 years - no joke. I don't want to get too excited - one dosage does not "a cure" make. But I am hopeful. There are licensed Acupuncturist on site daily and in addition, there is also a Chinese Herbalist who specializes in dermatology (only speaks Cantonese and Mandarin). Kamwo prices almost seem arbitrary. The prices online or those quoted by in-store staff have nothing to do with what you get billed (which is higher). I visited with a friend who wanted to go to Kamwo. My friend asked one of the staff about the price per pound for a few ingredients. They told my friend the price for each. Then my friend asked for a specific weight for each ingredient. With tax, the total should have come to less than 14 dollars (after adding tax). The staff rang up the order and said it was "exactly" 18 dollars! After reading the receipt, it seemed that the prices the staff told my friend had nothing to do with the prices charged in the order. It's like they ignored those prices and charged whatever they want. Looking at other reviews it seems like prices at Kamwo are arbitrary and not very consistent. There was one customer that said the online prices didn't not match with the amount they were billed. Well, if you visit the store in-person, the same thing will happen! Finally, near the front area there is a sign that says you should count your change and once you leave the store, Kamwo won't do anything. Now I know the meaning of that sign. If Kamwo rips you off and you leave the store, they won't do anything if you come back. It's like they know they are ripping off customers! I wish I could give this place zero stars.
