I just had a totally brilliant prosumer espresso-machine repair experience with Yossi and his team at Kanen Coffee in Berkeley. They truly deserve a 5-Star recommendation. And it's sure nice to have an espresso repair shop of this quality in the Bay Area!! Beyond their expert repair skill and courteous service, its a special extra treat that Kanen sends out a personalized and complete YouTube video demonstrating the repaired performance of your machine. Who does that?? Kanen had been referred to me by one of the meccas of espresso-machine-repair, Stefano's Espresso Care, Elmira, OR. I'd been prepared to ship my ailing machine to Sefano's because I wanted to be sure my 10-year old Elektra Microcasa Semiautomatica (a bit off the mainstream) would be handled properly. But Stefano's 1.5 month backlog was more than I could handle. Encouraged by Stefano's strong recommendation, I discussed the problem with Kanen, both by phone and email. Filled with optimism, I drove my machine over to Berkeley from San Jose, and left it in Claire's (and Yossi's) hands. I'd been delayed by Friday evening rush hour traffic from San Jose and wasn't going to make it until after Kanen's 5 PM closing tme. But Claire was kind and generous enough to wait patiently for my arrival. What a great start. I'd suspected that my machine had weakening pump pressure, a clogged Pressurestat, and that it was well overdue for general maintenance. A few days later, Yossi contacted me directly with a fair quote given that his diagnosis confirmed my suspicions. I'd explained my addiction to daily Ristretto's made with Vivace Dolce Blend. I pleaded for their shortest possible turn-around time, but received no promises. Then, only TWO days after receiving my go-ahead, Yossi emailed that the machine was ready! That's well beyond what anyone would call an outstanding turn-around. New pump, new Pressurestat, new group-head gasket, new shower-screen and an overall cleaning in two days? After testing the repair, Yossi told me he'd noticed a related problem in the making. With pressure restored, it seemed clear to him that my back flushing solenoid was not working properly. That solenoid releases group-head pressure after each run. Solenoid failures risk messy puck explosions on portafilter removal. Yossi asked for my approval to replace it, and after we talked through the options, I agreed. With the email announcing that my machine was ready for pick-up, Yossi sent along a thorough and entertaining YouTube video showing his personal testing of my machine, along with some still photos. The video showed my machine running with a group-head pressure gage attached. The gage showed my group pressure rising to more than 15 bars after the repair, just as it should. It had fallen to only 5 Bars before the repair. The video also showed Yossi testing the steam wand, and then pulling a 23 gram Ristretto test-shot in about 30 seconds using my triple basket and naked portafilter with his favorite espresso. I really appreciated the video and you would too. Then, despite rush-hour traffic delaying my Berkeley arrival once again, Yossi was willing to wait for me. And although I arrived after-hours, I never felt rushed. Yossi freely answered a number of technical questions I had about de-clumping my grinds and about back-flushing the machine. Then, he even carried the machine out to my car! Kudos! read more
