We paid almost $400 to have the grinder fixed on our coffee machine. We left it for over a month. Just picked it up today. Supposedly it's fixed but they left us a surprise in the ground catch unit. It was moldy and smelly. If they used it or tested it, you would think that they would clean it. I'll like to add we cleaned the unit before dropping it off. read more

Kanen Coffee did a great job replacing the pump in our QuickMill Anita machine. (and they did a much-needed cleaning) And I love their setup, with the big door open that lets them work in the fresh air. Everybody I dealt with was friendly and knowledgeable. When I walked into this shop, I immediately sensed that too-rare find: an establishment run with great care by a craftsperson of integrity as deep as his (in this case) knowledge of the field is wide. It looked, felt, smelled, sounded, and even tasted just right. Sam showed me around, answered many many questions, never hard-sold me, did introduce me to an espresso machine I later added to my list of possibilities and helped me land on the perfect grinder too. He even helped me learn better how to get the most out of my pre-Millenium Pavoni. Fast forward a month. I had continued to consider upgrades to an ECM Synchronika and the machine I kept finding so enticing, a Rocket Cinquantotto R. BUT, thanks to Sam, i had a third contender that was just stunning: Lelit Bianca. Indeed, this machine won out in the end: it was both cheaper and came with gobs more bells and whistles... all of which I find super useful day in/out, week by week. And it's a looker. Bonus: by the time i decided, Lelit had put Bianca on sale bc it has a new model coming. But i digress to extol Lelit (and the gorgeously functional Eureka Mignon Silencio grinder) when you need to know why to chose Sam and his team at Kanen... Because they know espresso machines and grinders inside/out, guide you to best service whether sales or repairs, and do it all with gentle patience. That's why. When i went to get my new machines, Sam spent an hour or maybe 90 minutes. I schlepped my machine down in rush hour traffic only to be told that they no longer replace boilers. Really? You definitely could have saved me a trip by mentioning that. "Well why didn't you tell us?" I did. Several times both in a phone message and in my online form. Unsure what their purpose is if they don't actually repair machines? Money laundering? In response to Kanen Coffee's response to my critique this morning: The coffee machine in question was NOT improperly maintained as implied. We used it often, but it is fairly pristine considering it is a few years old. Also, they brought up the fact that my name is not known to them, but that is because I work for a clinic in the city, and it belongs to them. If they really want to know who I work for, they can ping me directly. It is not for them to broadcast my employer, i hope they adhere to Yelp's guidelines. In any case, there was only a small leak, but to replace the generator, a 'tune up,' new brew assembly, it's overkill. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ We wanted to fix our espresso machine that had a leaking heating element, so we came to these guys. The quote was $140 non-refundable to diagnose, and the final price would have been $700 for a $550 machine. I feel this place is a scam - at least in this instance they inflated the price so we would leave the machine with them in disgust. No way, we are going to eat the $140 and get it back from them. read more

I used to take my espresso equipment to Blue Bottle's location on Broadway in Oakland but it turns out that don't do repairs for outside customers any longer (only for their own cafe equipment). They directed me to Kanen Coffee instead. I gave Kanen a call and headed over to drop off my Macap grinder which I had been using on a daily basis for 16 years. They got back to me within a couple weeks (they had told me that they were pretty backed up and it could take a while to get to it) to let me know that I needed new burrs and a deep cleaning, along with an estimate. I gave the approval for the repair. Another week or so, and I got an email saying that it was ready, and they even included a link to a video showing what they had replaced, and showing me that it was now in good working order. They even told me that the repair had taken a bit less time than estimated, so they charged me less than the estimate (which shows you, right there, how honest and up-front they are). When I picked up my grinder, they even threw in a free bag of Intelligentsia espresso beans (nice touch!). Anyway, excellent service, excellent work, and highly recommended. I am really pleased with Kanen's service. My Quick Mill Andreja had been heavily used for almost 7 years and was starting to leak in places. Kanen overhauled my grouphead, replaced all seals, replaced the group head filter, and flushed the system with citric acid. They performed the work in 4 business days and sent a quick video of the repaired machine in action. Yossi and his team ROCK espresso machines. Tucked away in a tiny suite in a non-description building in Berkeley, Kanen Coffee is a Mecca for anyone with any type of broken espresso machine. Saeco, Gaggia, Breville, De'Longhi, La Pavoni. Yossi fixes them all, fixes them well, and fixes them quickly. After delivering my ailing Saeco to Yossi, I received a written diagnosis of the issue (complete with pictures of the broken components and a detailed cost estimate) by email. After a couple of days, Yossi emailed saying my machine had been rehabilitated. It now pulls great shots again thanks to Yossi's magic. If your espresso machine needs a helping hand, take it nowhere else than Kanen Coffee. read more

Parted ways with my espresso maker for warranty repair. The place is in a residential neighborhood with scarce parking. Already there was a problem with attitude when I came to the store. How long will it take. 2-4 weeks. For replacing a bulb? Seriously!! After 3 weeks I placed a call for an update. They don't pick up the phone. You leave a message and they promise a call back. Did not happen. I had to get the manufacturer involved to get a response. Still got the standard response. "Takes 2-4 weeks, we will call you when it's ready" standard answer. They need to hire a customer service person and get better at doing estimation. read more

My fourteen year old coffee grinder (which though labeled Carimali is an OBEL EB grinder rebadged as a Bezzera, Pavoni, Carimali, etc) gave it up. It simply stopped grinding. It would lurch, and you could hear the motor humming but it simply refused to grind. I took it to Kanen and let Yossi work on it, Unfortunately, he was unable to even open it up as it was terminally frozen shut. I am sad the device is finished but if THEY cannot even open it up I see little point in clinging to it. It really doesn't owe us anything. If there is an upside to this series of events, it is that Kanen waived any fees despite spending time on trying to open it. I find this very refreshing, and very unusual. I had an unparalleled experience at Kanen Coffee. When my Rancilio Silvia started shorting out and tripping my fuse, I figured I'd have to send it to some repair center in New Jersey. Much to my surprise, a quick search for "espresso machine repair, Berkeley" pointed me to Kanen coffee. Buoyed by the immediate relief that I didn't have to box up my bulky machine, I set out that morning to find this unlikely place, expecting a surly old Italian don with a backlog of machines stacked on the shelf. Instead, I was greeted by Yossi, who invited me to come in the same morning I'd called (at 8:30 a.m., no less!). Tucked away behind an unassuming facade with no sign, Kanen is a designer's paradise--clean and minimalist, with a few restored machines for sale on display (mini Riviera, Gaggia, rare models that will make any coffee geek drool). They've also designed and built concrete and corian machines (see pictures) which are now at the top of my wish list. Yossi and Sam kindly showed me around and were so genuine and friendly, it sent me off in a good mood for the remainder of the day. If all service providers made you feel like this, therapists would go out of business. They diagnosed the problem with my tired old Silvia (needed new heating element) within the day and sent me a detailed estimate of costs. The work was done two days later, and I received an email from Yossi with a link to a Facebook video explaining how they restored my machine and cleaned it, complete with closeups of the cracked and bruised parts that needed replacing. They pulled a shot with a stack of gorgeous crema and demo'd the steam. My machine looked dazzling. Happy. Yossi let me know that other parts were needed, but since he hadn't put them in the estimate, he discounted the final bill -- so generous. BONUS: they threw in a bag of VERVE coffee beans and showed me how to descale and flush my machine going forward to keep it in good shape. Who does customer service like this these days? I brought in my 25 year La Pavoni Professional which hadn't been serviced in many years. I couldn't believe how quickly they refurbished it. I was expecting it to take two weeks or more. I was floored when I got the email the next day saying it was ready to pick up. They also 3-D printed a tamper the precise size of the filter. I had purchased an extended warranty on my Gaggia Anima Prestige one Step Super Automatic Coffe machine. When the grinder failed, I contacted Sam and arranged the repair. It took a little over two weeks but the machine worked perfectly when returned. I have never liked the One Step feature of the Gaggia Anima Prestige. So after getting the machine back, I used it for a couple of months before I finally broke down and bought a Saeco Incanto with panarello instead of the carafe. This review is more like a follow-up to review I gave a couple of years ago. I returned to Kanen Coffee recently to diagnose the cause of a leak in my Gaggia Classic unit. The shop had moved since my last visit and is now in a larger facility in Berkeley. As on my previous visit, the staff is friendly and knowledgeable. They had the problem diagnosed and fixed within a few days at a fair cost. Kanen seems to be a paperless company, so that you get emails to keep you informed--written estimate, notification when the machine is ready with an accompanying invoice, and then a receipt once you pick up your machine. When I reached Sam at Kanen Coffee and described the problem, he stopped by our store immediately and diagnosed the problem. My very special Zacconi pump coffee machine just quit on me. I had it repaired recently in San Francisco but it just stopped heating up. It is at least 10 years old and a real family treasure. I took it to Kanen and they said I needed a new part and it would be a while and expensive. After much thought, I decided it was worth the cost and the wait. I am so happy I had it fixed. It works perfectly and even better than new. The folks at Kanen are very friendly and professional and help you figure out what to do. They really understand how people feel about their coffee and attachment to their machines. I had an issue with my Delonghi- quoted me $400.00 on the phone. I would have to agree with the other reviews on pricing... I did the tune-up on it myself via u-tube cost $9.99 for the food grade lube. I called Delonghi I will be sending it there for a different issue for $234.95 total including round trip shipping of the unit. I miss the place in San Francisco on 840 Folsom St. sad they closed. The owner insults his customers in emails. The owner charges $140 for an "estimate", promising to take that cost off the repair, but then comes back with an amount far exceeding the value of the machine so he can keep your estimate payment without doing any work.
