I asked for a quote (quote alone is $130 and takes a week) to repair my Saeco espresso machine and the quote was higher than the retail price of a brand new machine! After years of reliable service my Andreja Premium finally gave up the ghost (while venting a huge amount of steam). Having some electromechanical experience, I opened it up and tried to diagnose the problem. Espresso machines have a fairly straightforward feedback design, but all the components need to be precisely tuned and balanced to work together correctly. After spending a few hours fiddling with it, the only thing I could determine was that the boiler heating element and electronic control box and (I thought) the pump were working. I had three options: 1) Trash the machine and buy a new one for $2000+; 2) Buy a bunch of replacement parts and spend hours of trial and error installing them; or, 3) Take the machine to a specialist. I chose option #3 and took it to Kanen Coffee, and was given an estimate of $223 to replace a defective solid state relay. When that was replaced, other "downstream" problems manifested themselves, including blocked sensor tubing and malfunctions in the pressurestat, vacuum breaker valve, pressure release valve, a clogged E61 grouphead screen, and various gasket leaks. After all those things were fixed it became apparent that the old pump could not work under load in the now repaired system! The final repair bill came to about $700. I could have ordered the various parts online for about $450, but I would have spent many hours effecting the needed repairs. My machine was in very bad shape when I brought it to Kanen and now works as well as ever, hopefully without problems for another decade! It did cost a lot to fix, but in my opinion the cost was quite reasonable. I would use them again. read more

Amazing place! Really! We have a wonderful but recently rebellious Gaggia Platinum. It got to where it kept saying "ventilate" all the time, and it was not fixed by ventilating it. After going through all the "do it yourself" kinds of videos, I decided to try to do it myself... and it helped, for a while, but I apparently did not replace the correct part, or maybe 2 parts were going out at once. After getting a last cup of coffee from it, the machine stuck on ventilate and refused to move. I called all around and Kanen Coffee returned my call immediately. They told me up front what the costs would be -- an initial cost for either one hour of labor, and that cost would be counted towards the final cost to fix the machine. He actually talked to me about how I could do simple repairs, and given that I had already replaced the flow meter by looking at technical diagrams which did NOT fix our baby, I knew I needed a professional. They were definitely the professionals we have only dreamed about finding. Really, I am not overstating here when I say that they are maestros in espresso machine repair. We went into an understated and very cool office, where they had prototypes of espresso machines THEY had actually created. The vibe was good, and it was obvious they have a lot of love for the machines they deal with. After we paid the cost for diagnosis/first hour labor, he took notes on everything we said that the Gaggia was doing, and told us it would be 3 to 4 weeks. In about 3.5 weeks, we got an email from Yossi and Sam, saying that our machine was fixed and that there was a youtube video showing our Gaggia and its operation. I don't usually have feelings of such love for an inanimate item, but to see our Gaggia working way better than she had in YEARS, up on the screen almost brought tears to my eyes. We went and got her as quickly as we could, the next business day, and were given a clean and well-working Gaggia Platinum as well as a sample bag of coffee to try -- and we WILL be buying more of that coffee, as well! Now that we are home everyone in the household wants cappuccinos continuously. The machine is better than when we first got it new, if that is possible.. and it works like a dream! I cannot recommend them enough! The one star rating is based on poor customer service. When I called Kanen this week to make arrangements to bring my espresso machine in for repair, I asked him how long would it take before he could do the work on my machine. He told me about 30 days. I asked if I could make an appointment to bring it to his store in 30 days and pick it up whenever he had it completed, as long as he would start work within a few days of me bringing it in. He said, "we don't work that way...you have to leave it here until I can work on it and that might be 30 days before I can start working on it." REALLY??? Do you have any concept of what customer service means? To me, one of the most important aspects to good customer service is when you try to do things to make the experience great FOR THE CUSTOMER, NOT JUST WHAT'S CONVENIENT FOR YOU. Let me ask you Kanen Coffee... if you wanted your car repaired at a specific shop and they told you that you had to leave your car at their shop for about 30 days until they could start working on it and that they don't make appointments for the future, would you do without your car for 30+ days for a 2 hour repair, or would you find another auto repair shop? My espresso machine is about as important and necessary to me as my car is :) How difficult would it be for you to have a calendar for appointments? You told me that you tried that before and it didn't work. I would suggest that the reason it didn't work didn't have to do with the customer's problem; it probably had to do with your process. Fix your process and everyone is happy! I read other reviews with similar complaints. This sort of "poor customer service mentality" is what helps put some small businesses out of business, or in the very least, prevents them from growing. Sorry to be to harsh but I was really taken back by your lack of empathy for the customer and your inflexibility. Let me know if you change your service policy; I'd love to do business with you but don't want to be without my espresso machine for five weeks. read more

After 7 years, my fully automatic DeLonghi Magnifica S espresso machine decided it could froth no more. It's a complex machine and I worried I wouldn't find a shop with the skill or parts. I was excited to discover a DeLonghi certified service provider in the Bay Area - Kanen Coffee. In the midst of COVID, Kanen provided a socially distant drop off counter with a plastic barrier. Sam, the owner, provided a reasonable estimate and a few weeks later I picked up the machine. Unfortunately, it didn't work as expected as excess steam was escaping. I emailed Sam and made a warranty appointment. Sam looked at the machine and offered to fix it while I wait. While he worked, we discussed all the unique machines in his shop. If you are a coffee lover, Sam's shop is a living museum and showroom. I had the extra privilege of not only getting to know Sam, but I received a training in espresso machinery history. Automation can be temperamental and I understand fixing one problem can sometimes create another. I offered to pay for the parts and labor, but Sam explained it's impossible to know if the problems are connected. I then offered to pay for the new parts, but Sam again refused. I'm grateful Sam was able to fix my DeLonghi Magnifica and honor his warranty. A month in and it's working great! read more

I'm not sure whether they are technically incompetent, dishonest, or both. Here was my experience with them. I had them come over to fix a machine that was making a loud noise when filling the water reservoir. The technician told me that the cause was mineral buildup in the machine. He went on to say that he'd fixed the problem by cleaning out the solenoid, but that this fix was only temporary since I had hard water and the problem would come back. What I really needed, he said, was a deep clean and a different water filtration system. I became suspicious when I got the repair estimate, which showed parts like a "group head gasket, screen, citric acid, Urnex coffee cleaner, and test coffee" for $50. I've ordered those parts before and the total cost is maybe $10. I declined the "deep cleaning" and "filtration system" (the total bill for which came to $950, including on site service). I had already given them almost $500 to come out and diagnose the problem. Instead, I called the distributor, who suggested that maybe the water supply wasn't sufficient and that I try using the reservoir. Sure enough, I switched from plumbed in mode to resevoir mode and that was the problem. Clearly the technician had not fixed the problem when he was on site. Had I gone with Kanen's recommendation I would have been out $1,500. In fact, the problem was a $20 filter change on my water filtration system. Watch out for these guys. read more

I took my Saeco Royal professional in for service, as it had a leaking hose inside. i received an estimate for a $15.00 clamp+ $262.50 for 2.5 hours of labor, which I thought was a much better price than having to re-purchase the (originally) $1,200.00 Espresso machine. Then I received an e-mail saying that they are receiving an error message ("ventilate") and think that the pump has gone out and that I would need to pay another "$50 for the pump and $105 for labor in addition to the existing estimate of $278.93". Desperately desiring my Espresso machine returned, and thinking that replacing the pump would guarantee an even longer lifetime for my unit, I approved the pump replacement. Next, 14 days later, I received a message saying that while servicing my machine Kanen had burned out the motherboard, and that burnt motherboard "might" have been the source of the error message...which would mean that the pump had not actually been bad in the first place! I am then told: "As an act of good will we willing to discount the price of the pump and the time we spent installing & troubleshooting it. We will need to charge you for fixing the original problem in the total of $278.93. You can pay at our shop or if you wish, we can send an online link for making a payment through Square. If you wish to pick up the espresso machine we can put it back together or we can recycle it for you." An act of good will? Now I am now expected to pay $278.50 for the repair to my now BROKEN Espresso machine, and either pick it up or have them recycle it. I have no use for a BROKEN espresso machine, why would I pay $278.50 for it? Ebay has "new" motherboards for my espresso machine for $100.00. If Kanen coffee were an honest business they would do everything possible to return my espresso maker in at least the same condition I delivered it to them in; working. I cannot suggest Kanen espresso machine service to anyone: If this business breaks your property while it is in their possession, they will not reimburse you for your loss and will expect you to pay them for breaking it. read more

After my machine stopped working I began searching for a place where I could repair it. I contacted Kanen and was assured that they would be able to fix the machine. The location is very nice and Yossi and Sam are incredibly knowledge and professional. It was immediately apparent to me that besides specializing in repair they also strive to give excellent customer services. True to past reviews, Kanen Coffee gives email updates regarding the status of the machine and any updates and availability of parts. After my machine was repaired I took it home and tested it out. I don't remember a time that the machine worked so well. The machine stopped working completely when I brought it in. I also asked them to do a service. Not only did they fix the problem, they also changed and repaired all the little things that were bugging me. I swear I don't remember when I had a tastier cup of coffee and its all thanks to Kanen Coffee. To cut this story short. Sam and Yossi are two incredibly nice, talented and knowledgable individuals who take pride in their work which translates to their relations with their customers. Way, way, WAY overpriced. My machine costs (new) $1200, repair cost $550. Can you imagine if you brought in your 20,000 honda for repair and it cost $9000 to repair. Add to that the unbelievably long wait for repair, major 'tude' and a lousy location (no parking, tiny street), you are better off buying a new machine and shipping to somewhere else for repair. Or better yet, open you own espresso repair shop! Killer money to be made there! read more

This all happened a year ago, only now getting around to writing the review. We brought our leaking Rancilio Silvia to Kanen Coffee for a repair. He diagnosed it as a leaking boiler gasket, and replaced the gasket. Total cost came to $230 for parts and labor. They also suggested we do an additional tune-up for $200, which we declined (all of this for a machine that you can get new for a little less than $700...). The machine still leaked after this. Having lost faith in the quality control of Kanen Coffee, I next brought it to the blue bottle repair shop in Oakland. They immediately diagnosed this as a warped lower boiler (and there was a simple explanation for this, the machine had been in freezing conditions and that destroyed the boiler). So, essentially, if we had gone with the original recommendation of Kanen, we would have spent $430 for a repair job that actually missed the real problem with the machine, and the way it turned out we still wasted $230 on a repair job that was done incorrectly because they misdiagnosed the problem. Oh, and they are way more expensive than the other shop we tried. If that was backed up with quality work, sure, but at least in our case that was really not the case... read more

These guys are amazing. I wasn't sure they would be willing to service my lower-end Capresso machine, but they were more than happy to take a look at it. Turned out it was just an issue with the portafilter I was using, so since they didn't need to replace any parts or do any work on it, they didn't even charge me for the assessment or full suite of tests they ran. Kanen Coffee is the best. I have used them a couple of times in the past. They repaired my Vibiemme Double Domobar and saved me from having to ship it out of state for repair. I dropped my unit off and the repaired it in about a week. In addition they produced a video of the work they did. The unit works as well as the first time I used it. The team at Kanen is great. My Saeco Talea Ring Plus fully automatic expresso machine stopped working over two weeks ago. My former repairman moved from Pleasanton to Tracy. Living in the San Francisco Bay Area, it is hard to find someone who repairs my machine. Believe me, I checked. I searched YP and Google. Luckily I found Kanen from Yelp. I took my machine there. About a week I got it back and it works as if new. Repair cost is not cheap. It is fair and a little on the high side but the people there are very nice. They even provided a Youtube video to show their work and the parts they replaced for me. When I picked it up, they gave me a bag of coffee bean. The entire process is pleasant. The only challenge is finding their shop in the middle of Berkeley since I am not familiar with the city. Fortunately, I have GPS. They do not have a visible sign in the front nor back. Parking is also a challenge if you do not know the area. But if you call them up, they will give you the directions to make it easy. I like this place and will go again for future service. read more

When my home espresso machine went kaput two weeks ago, i wasn't sure I should scrap it and invest in a new one. How fortunate am I that Kanen coffee is in the Bay Area! I have a rather troublesome Salvatore espresso machine that I have had a difficult time finding anyone to repair. Dealing with the manufacturer in Solvang has been a struggle for my three repairs in 10+ years, initially personally with Solvang, in San Francisco and for Yossi most recently. One thing I learned from my three repair experiences is that all espresso machines are NOT created equal. Sadly, my Salvatore seems to fall into the group labeled "unnecessarily difficult to repair." Lucky for me, Kanen coffee didn't give up and managed to repair my machine by substituting parts from other sources, despite the roadblocks put in place by Salvatore. Much to my delight, the steam frothing portion of my machine works better than it ever did since my purchase 10 years ago! Without hesitation , I heartily recommend Kanen coffee! They are professional, highly qualified and patient. I will not bother to repair my Salvatore again, choosing to cut my losses. My next purchase will surely be from Kanen! read more
