This is such a fun place. I went here after finals with some other nursing students in my cohort. This is the coolest building , an old library? How freakin cool. The food was absolutely delicious. The Kangaroo and Kiwi was originally established in 2001 in their Green Lake location, but it now resides in Ballard's own historical Carnegie building. Lots of great small bites. If you were out early, everything is only $10. A variety of burgers and full dinners like Mum's Sunday roast and loaded pie. They have a special brunch on Saturday and Sunday and a full kids menu. Service can be a bit slow in the evening, loud, and dark. I ordered the wings and they were definitely overcooked. Can't comment on the rest of the dishes since I did not try those. It was very crowded when we were there, a girl was pushing through the crowd without saying excuse me, and my two guy friends called her out on it.. somehow it got translated to that I was disrespectful to her when I didn't even know what was going on. She then told the bartender about the interaction with my two male friends and he told me I was not going to be able to order a drink. I never engaged with the girl nor said anything to her. Me and my fiance went there because it looked super cool and they had food. The food was good, bartenders were friendly. But we sat out back and there were multiple other groups and we all saw multiple rats running around. I had them shut the door so they didnt go inside and then I spoke with the owner to let him know what was going on and they should get the place treated, and he did not care whatsoever. He mentioned that there was another one out front and had a dog bark at it and was laughing about it. He definitely did not care handling about the issue and that is the reason we will not be back there. About a month ago I was smoking a cig in the outside area with my buddies and a bartender told me I can't smoke out there so I said okay and put it out and walked inside where I was met with a bouncer who told me I needed to leave and I asked why and he told me the bartender said I told him to "fuck off " and continued to smoke. So I then took him to my put out cigarette and showed him and the manager came out and told me I could stay because I put out the cigarette like I had said. The next night I was there again and told one of the bartenders my experience that night and she sympathized with me and I just laughed it off and thought that was the end of it but I went there tonight and was told I was 86ed and I asked why and they said my attitude didn't mesh well with them and that i can come back in a few months if I'm behaved and we can re evaluate my situation. I will never be returning to this place as the manager was extremely disrespectful and the bartenders are bully's who get their feelings hurt when they are confronted about lying. Overall I had a decent experience and have been coming there for quite some time but since with zero trouble except for this incident. They have lost a good paying and tipping customer and I will be reaching out to the owner as well to see about an apology. Extremely disrespectful management and bartenders. Ok, I thought that this sounded Aussie, and it is!! It's a cool bar to come hang for brunch, or on the weekends. Nice and big. Main attraction? Aussie workers? Close..... it's actually the sprinklers on a hot day that are on outside as you come in! We came here for HH after driving by a few times and wondering about this place for a while. It looked interesting from the street, and I loved that they repurposed an old library. We sat at the bar since it was so empty the weekday we went, and the bartender was amazing. He gave us a backstory on the place. Apparently, it used to be a French restaurant, and the place gets packed for Rugby Matches, Formula 1, and a few other Sports events. According to the bartender, it used to be a big U Dub spot before Covid, but now primarily brings in Canadians and Aussies, of course. Their brunch is also a big hit. We ordered HH: -Chili - this was pretty basic, nothing out of this world -Chicken Tenders - these were bomb, highly recommend -Meat Pie - This was also nothing super impressive -Fried Cheese Curds -I highly recommend you order these, so yum! Two local draft beers (can't remember which) A few other businesses share the space upstairs, and they have hella bathrooms! They also have a patio outside, which gets nice in warm weather. We planned on having my wife's aunt and uncle meet us in Ballard for dinner with her friend and then taking us to Sea Tac for our Red Eye flight. I saw this place on Yelp and Google Maps which looked cool and was suitable for my wife's Australia obsession due to Mel the Koala being her favorite Beanie Baby (which we brought here). On a Sunday evening in mid-November it was loud and crowded but the service is fast and friendly. We luckily found a table for five of us in the side room. My wife and I had shared Cheese Curds, a Big Kiwi Burger, and a Loaded Pie. We ended up taking bacon off (I accidentally told my wife the wrong pie) and the kiwi burger had bacon and eggs even though the menu did not come with bacon. My wife's aunt and uncle also shared a salad which was large enough to share. I'm sure they would have redone it but we had to get to the airport for our flight. We definitely had more than enough food and the beer was great and my wife and I shared both the Mac & Jack's African Amber and the Lucky Envelope Peanut Butter Cream Stout. I would not recommend this place for those with sensitive asthma as my wife's friend had an asthma attack which improved by stepping outside. Overall this is a great place with unique food, brews, and vibes in a historic library. read more

We ordered the Classic Sydney Salad (for me) and the Aussie Sausage Roll with Chips, Beans, and Gravy (for my husband) for our main dishes tonight. We got a to-go order. We ordered the NZ lamb sandwich for our shared appetizer. The staff kindly substituted lettuce for bread on this sandwich, since gluten has the potential to badly affect a medical condition that I have. We got a bottle of Pinot Noir that we thought was sourced from Australia based on the menu information, but it ended up being sourced from New Zealand. I liked that the wine menu had 4 wine options that were sourced from Australia (or possibly from NZ instead, apparently). I really wanted to love this place. Love the name, love the Australia/New Zealand theme, love the location, love the building. However, I didn't love the food, and overall nothing really stood out about the service one way or the other. It also smelled pretty bad in there, a mix of beer and urine smells. I recognize that this is a pub and not a fine dining establishment, though, so I chose my star rating with that in mind. For pub food (and please keep in mind that I haven't been to many pubs overall, so I don't have a vast basis for comparison), it was maybe a bit better than average. My Classic Sydney Salad was decent. The dressing was pleasantly tangy, and I think I could taste a fairly good balsamic in it. The vegetables were fresh, and the portion size was fine. I didn't eat more than about a quarter of it, though, and I'm hungry. Just couldn't muster the motivation to continue eating it. I wasn't a fan of the lamb sandwich, and I didn't end up eating more than a couple of bites of that. The lamb started off tasting okay, but as I kept chewing it I made a bit of a grimace and didn't want to eat any more of it. It tasted worse and worse to me the more I chewed it. And I hate to say this, but I actually spit out my first bite of a fry - the texture was odd, kind of a bit mushy, but the flavor was very bland as well. I tried three more fries, but all 3 of them met the same fate. I don't often eat fries, but I do usually like fries well enough. My husband thought his Aussie sausage roll was quite good in terms of taste and texture. I really wanted to like something in our dinner from here, so I took a tiny bite out of the middle of his sausage roll. Relief washed over me, since it actually tasted really flavorful. Because I am gluten free and the sausage is enveloped in a huge amount of puff pastry, I couldn't eat any more of it, in order to respect my gluten avoidance. But, I would've eaten more of the sausage roll if I could've, and the texture of the puff pastry looked flaky and lovely, and it was an enticing golden brown in color. My husband and I stopped by this pub tonight because I ended up spontaneously buying Kangaroo Onesies for us to wear this Halloween, and then I ran with the Australian theme a bit and we special ordered small individually-wrapped Caramello Cadbury chocolates with Koalas on them, sourced from Australia, for our Halloween candy for trick-or-treaters this year. We also ordered a cute little Koala hood-hat for our cat, and we bought a small stuffed kangaroo to put next to our Halloween candy bowl tomorrow night. When I found out about this pub, I was delighted that there is an Australian-themed restaurant in our area. Unfortunately I wasn't super happy with our experience here, but I'm giving 4 stars because most of my complaints are fairly minor and I do understand that having excessively high expectations for pub food just isn't realistic. I wish this business well, and I think it is a fun and unique addition to the Ballard restaurant scene. read more

I've been wanting to come here for years! I'm glad they show the out of town sporting events so it's now in the viewing rotation! We basically got our own room and the TV to ourselves. The beer and cocktail list is massive, but sadly the draft lines were down, so all they had available were some of their bottles and cans. We still made do, and enjoyed them along some snacks of Poutine and sweet potato fries. They had a huge food menu available so make sure to arrive hungry. The Full Aussie Breakfast has my name on it for the next time The two guys behind the bar were a bit cheeky, but really nice and checked in on us periodically. I'm giving them a 5 star for the price and the tastiness of an $8 burger and fries which is unheard in Seattle! I've been here many times and never thought about joining them for food and happy hour. It's so cheap for their daily specials and the burger was delicious. You couldn't go wrong with it and their secret sauce was delish. They have a huge outdoor area and you can even bring your pup (which I did). Nice spot for an outdoor area to enjoy HH drinks and the sun. The inside is quite large too and I've been there to watch sporting events and it's a fun atmosphere. Check out their daily specials, wing night on Mondays for $.75 per wing, Tuesday $8 burger and fries, Wednesday $8 Toasty which is cheese sandwich and tomato soup, Thursday $10 Aussie Parma or schnitzel. It's all sounds like a good deal! I'll be back for other items on their HH list. The waiter was nice too! No complaints and it wasn't busy on a Tuesday afternoon at 4. Before COVID, I enjoyed this place more because they had board games and fireplaces going when it's cold inside. Ever since they started keeping their windows open even during winter, it's been pretty miserable hanging out for too long here. I try to keep my visit very short. I've never had trouble finding seating here and have actually been quite lucky in that regard because they do fill up quickly. There are generally 2 kinds of people who frequent the place - older guys coming for the sports and younger large groups for the atmosphere and space. I wouldn't order food here unless I was getting desperate, but they have a large variety of options to choose from for whatever you want - sandwiches, burgers, tacos, fish and chips, etc. I keep forgetting how bad the fish and chips are. The last time I went, the dish was basically all soggy batter. My other picture from before shows more darker color, so maybe it depends on the day and is a hit or miss. We come here for the space and ginger beer anyway. We like crabbies, which they have sold off and on, but always have some sort of ginger beer. read more
