I had a very positive experience here. I came here with four co workers for lunch. We all ordered the bento box lunch specials and one co worker ordered the spider roll. Miso soup came out first which was good, then salad with ginger dressing, also very good. Our appetizer for the table was the Thai spring rolls with chicken that were excellent. I tasted a little bit of curry in them and enjoyed them a lot with the sweet and sour dipping sauce on the side. My lunch box came with a California roll, beef negimaki, and my strip teriyaki. For a lunch special of $13.00 to include the soup and salad it was definitely worth it. I will be coming here again in the future. Also service was fast and friendly. A large, clean restaurant with fairly decent food that I visited at an off hour -- so the place was pretty empty which may have detracted from the experience. We each had the lunch specials...three roll maki with miso soup and salad for $12; and sushi sashimi combo with soup and salad for $17. Both decent, but not outstanding. This place has great air ventilation and never smells like fish.......Ok this may sound funny but I'm very turned off when a sushi place has bad air quality or smells like fish. Absolutely terrible experience. We had food that was inedible and made half my party sick. We watched the hibachi chef drop some of the meat into the tray where they scrape the grease and garbage then mix it back into the food and serve it. Our first visit but wont be the last at this upscale and imaginative sushi place in Tinton Falls. Excellent quality, prefect presentation and very attentive service make for a very nice and relaxing dining experience. Even the miso soup and ginger salad are delicious. The hibachi side is very typical hibachi style. The sushi side is a little loud and crowded, and not very zen. When you sit at the sushi bar, you don't interact with the chefs, you have waiter service, and the view and feel is more like a lunch counter than a sushi bar. The rolls are good, maybe better than average for the area, so I would recommend it for take-out, but for dining in, this place is too much of a mad house for my taste. read more

It's been a while since I've been to a Japanese hibachi steakhouse. And for good reason. Yes, the showmanship is quite impressive, but no matter what type of meat that your order, they all pretty much taste the same. I ordered the Kanji Surf and Turf to taste just a little bit of everything. Although the filet, was good and tender, I think beef or chicken would do just fine. The lobster was seasoned just like all the other meats and it was a little on the tough side. Do not order. Very overrated. It's fun, but just stick w/ the chicken for the same experience. read more

This place used to be decent.. Hibachi used to be pretty tasty and sushi was ok at best when i hit up this spot last year. But was just there this Saturday night with my party of 16 and don't know what happened to them, but the Hibachi's taste was inconsistent. My brother said his steak and noodles were too salty while the 2 pieces he gave me was bland. The worst part was that my sushi (I ordered 4 special rolls - one with Eel and one with Soft Shell crab Tempura) was pretty bad. Eel and Soft shell crab was NOT fresh. And the tempura was hard as a rock. Tuna and smoked salmon were ok at best.. I told my server that my sushi was not fresh. He admitted they were different than other sushi spots where their seafood is defrosted after being frozen. But I told him I've had soft shell crab freshly killed right before being cooked. Same with some other highly rated sushi spots where the fish are flown in fresh more than once a week. Not sure whether they're cutting costs now but their stuff used to taste better. And compared with the prices my local Sushi spots in Queens are way better. Going to have to say goodbye to Kanji. If you're trying to cut costs you will lose customers like me, cause we roll in deep and hungry each time we come and expect tasty food! The service however, is great - we really like our server as he's also from NY.. but sorry, we're gonna try another nearby spot called Ganga again next time we're in the area as their lunch was excellent. We were driving home from a weekend church retreat where the food was all buffet so we were craving a sit down meal at a restaurant. This appeared to be along the route home. It was a little hard to find and is located in the Acme plaza. We sat down at 3pm on a Sunday so no lunch specials were available. We were very hungry and unsure of what to order. It seemed a little pricey too. 2 of us ordered hibachi style entrees. 1 salmon and steak / the other just steak. It came with miso soup meh, delicious ginger carrot salad (I could have eaten a gallon of this), 3shrimp app, noodles, vegetables and fried rice. We enjoyed every bite. I asked for the Ny strip to be medium rare and it was. The other 2 ordered a salmon bento box. It came with shumai and they were fried and it was clear they didn't like that. The also ordered raw tuna. Which they seemed to like. We had edamame as an appetizer which was frozen and had a super shriveled texture. The green tea they ordered was not very hot and the mug had a hard chip on it, my friend cut her lip on it. The waitress was annoyed every time we asked for something. We were 1 of 2 tables in the restaurant with about 7 servers all standing around. When it was time to leave we asked for to go boxes for the hibachi dinners. She came back with 2 small containers and at the table took my plate and just dumped it over so it splash everywhere and was a jumbled mess. The person who was treating us is Asian herself and was a bit annoyed at the waitress be so abrupt and rude, so she said just let me do it. The waitress said what is it you want now? She was so rude with the 80 yr old women I was disgusted. And last but not least they never refilled any of our waters or teas even after we asked. All in all the food was good for the most part but the service was not. The service is the only reason I wouldn't return. read more

I am here on a Saturday for lunch, it's a dark and quiet, nice ambience... Which is aesthetically pleasing. The Sweet Plus Roll doesn't disappoint. The crazy Friday roll is delicious, my favorite. Sushi is fresh. One gripe. The waitress brought out my boyfriends roll before mine so I am sitting with no food... I did order mine as an entrée and he ordered his as an appetizer... However, he ordered chicken teriyaki as an entrée. The waitress did not ask us the order of the food we would like, he then received his chicken entrée... And I still sat without food. This should be common sense etiquette, you should not leave a woman without food two courses in a row... And serve a man when the females entrée is not finished. read more

Customer service is amazing, as is the food! The staff went out of their way to do the little extras for my 2 and a half year old niece and 7 month nephew, including offering my sister hot water for my nephew's bottle (without being asked) and the chef took extra care to cut up my niece's chicken and noodles into toddler-sized pieces. The chef was so awesome and friendly and had my niece laughing and smiling. The food was fantastic and I can't believe how much we got for the hibachi. We are all leaving with leftovers. Outstanding lunch bento box special. For $15.99 you get a soup, salad, two appetizers, and an entree with white rice. A TON of food for the price, and the quality is very, very good. The miso soup and ginger dressed house salad were both par for the course at most Japanese steakhouses. The food here was good, if you're ordering the right stuff. Sushi was very good, fresh good quality fish and a good selection for a decent price. However, hibachi was not good- chicken, the basic hibachi meat was very dry and flavorless, the only flavor was salt, I had the chicken and lobster and even the lobster was mediocre (wild that someone could mess up lobster). The staff was very nice, and the restaurant was overall clean, but for some reason our table was sticky as hell. If you want sushi this is a great option, don't come for hibachi. read more

I haven't been to this place in over a year and had the worst experience on my birthday. Me, my guest and two other people we didn't know waited for 1 hour because they only had 1 chef cooking. It took them 30 mins before asking if we wanted something to drink. When another chef came in he treated me and my guest as if we wasn't there. He keep referring to the 2 other girl at the table as Queens and catering to them but we didn't receive the same treatment(mind you I was the birthday girl). I would give zero stars if i could. A few friends and I went and got hibachi last night. Right when we got back we all became violently ill and it hasn't stopped since. We called to let them know and to see if we could get any of our money back. The lady was rude and disrespectful and kept saying we were the first complaint, that shouldn't matter, and considering some of these yelp reviews we were not. They also asked for a doctors note. I'm in love with my family. Seriously in love with them. And I'm not just saying that because I'm pretty sure they read my reviews. You might not have as good a time here because you won't be with my family, but you probably don't ever have as good a time as we do anyway. We had my cousin's wedding rehearsal dinner in the private room here and it was fabulous. The food was great and the guys cooking the hibachi were very entertaining. Everyone working there was very patient with a loud and rowdy group - we're even loud by NJ standards, and that's pretty bad. It's a BYOB place and there's a liquor store right next door, though we didn't need it. A friend of the family makes his own wine and it was delicious and the perfect accompaniment to our food - and certainly contributed to our steadily rising volume. I can't wait to go back. P.S. The sushi here is delicious too. San Francisco does a lot of things well, but sushi isn't one of them. I think east coast sushi is much better. If you are near exit 109 on the Garden State around dinner time, get off the highway! Don't let the stripmall fool you - the place has a great interior, and more importantly wonderful food. The plates were stunning looking, which was a teaser for the taste. The cucumber salad was excellent. The tataki was phenomenal. This review is for the sushi half of the restaurant. I have to say I was quite disappointed and I'm usually a glass half full kind of person when it comes to eating out. Perhaps I've been spoiled having lived in the SF Bay Area for the last 6+ years but the sushi here made me think I should have just gone to Wegmans! First of all, we requested to sit at the sushi bar so we could see the fish and get the chef's recommendations; however, though seated at the sushi bar, we still had waiter service - how odd! We never even spoke to the chef once and he didn't even make eye contact with us the whole time. We were given a complimentary starter of tempura salmon but it was DRENCHED in some red ketchup like sauce so you couldn't even taste the fish - even took a couple bites to realize it was salmon and salmon has such a unique, strong flavor! We ordered salmon and white tuna sashimi to start, which was ok. It wasn't bad and I guess it was "fresh" but it just tasted like supermarket grade sashimi. We also ordered the dancing ocean roll and it was pretty good - quite large! Next, we ordered the shrimp tempura and the salmon martini. The tempura was way over battered! It was like eating dough with some shrimp. The salmon martini was way over sauced in some creamy mayo type thing that just totally overpowered the flavor of all the actual ingredients. The focus was definitely on the presentation as everything looked great but the flavors were totally lost in all the sauces. Coming in, I was dying to have some sushi and I was literally counting hours to get here since it's so highly rated on here and won best of jersey shore sushi, but honestly, I couldn't wait to get my check and get out! It just was a total disappointment. What didn't help was that there seemed to be two waitresses working the whole restaurant and we had to wait 15 minutes between getting our water refills, ordering more food, and another 15 just to get our check. Definitely not coming back and I sure hope this isn't the best of sushi NJ has to offer or I might cry as we just moved here permanently. read more

The sushi here is very good, fresh, quickly prepared and nicely presented. The staff is warm and accomodating. We have not been able to get a seat at a hibachi table, but we have ordered the hibachi dinner for the dining room and it is mediocre. I would not ever order hibachi served in the dining room again. I read the reviews of Kanji and I expected a much better experience. We got there and it's BYOB, liquor store was next door so it wasn't a big issue. The service was horrible and rushed. We had to ask them multiple times for glasses, soy sauce, straws etc.. The place was empty, it wasn't like the place was overflowing and they were running around serving people. There might have been 4 tables in the restaurant filled. The rolls were ok. That's the best way to describe them. There is nothing special about them. The sashimi pieces were about the same quality as Wegmans Sushi. The price is a little high, but I would not have had an issue paying the cost if the Sushi was better, fresher and of higher quality. The restaurant was edible, so it gets two stars. I had a much higher expectation for this restaurant. I will be searching for a better sushi place in the area.
