Really amazing spot. We grabbed a last minute 8:00pm reservation, and tried to move it up. Unfortunately, it was completely slammed, so they weren't able to. However, I soon understood why. The food was good. For appetizers, we had the squid, fried chicken, and potato sliders. All of which were amazing! Yet the appetizers were a bit spicy for my very very very abysmally low spice tolerance -- that being said, do beware: there are straight chilis on the fried chicken plate. Do not confuse them for peppers and eat. Your mouth will suffer. The mains that we tried were nice: the fish curry, shrimp curry, and goat biryani. My dad said that it was the best biryani he ever had. I didn't try it because I hate biryani. Anyways, all the mains were inoffensive and tasty. It's a cute place. Definitely ten out of ten for interior. They've got an absolutely insane painting of the traditional Indian fishing technique in the middle of the restaurant. My only criticism was that it is very expensive for what it is. You're paying for the ambiance and presentation. Kanyakumari is an Indian restaurant that was on the Michelin Guide for 2025. The place is located near Union Square and opened for dinner everyday and lunch on weekends only. The restaurant is quite small so reservations are a must! They do not sit you unless your full party has arrived. First and foremost, the service was superb! Whether it's the hostess, waiter who started taking care of us, the busser who took our plates away, or the waitress who ended taking care of us - everyone was very friendly and helpful! The menu is quite simple with a page of all their foods and this includes appetizers, entrees, sides, and desserts. Then another menu for drinks. They are known for their cocktails, some non-alcoholic beverages like the lassi, and other alcoholic drinks like wine. I came in a group of 6 people and we did family style so we could share everything. I asked our waiter for recommendations and he nearly cited the whole menu. But we narrowed it down to From Malabar and From Kanyakumari for appetizer. The From Malabar is a deliciously flavored slow cooked black gold beef with madras onion and chilli and it comes with 6 pieces! The From Kanyakumari is a Hira Anna Fried Chicken with fried garlic crumbs. It reminds me of a combination of Malaysian Satay Chicken and Taiwanese Popcorn Chicken with extra spices. For main entrees, I requested the From Manglore and my friends ordered the From Banglore and From Kozhikode. The From Manglore is by far my favorite. It's prawns (6 pieces) in tangy Curry, coconut, tamarind, spiced sauce that's perfect to dip the Malabar Parotha (flaky layered flatbread) side in! The From Banglore is a baby goat donne biryani which is very flavorful and comes with a handful of sauces as well. The rice texture is a bit smaller and moisture than I expected but the goat was not too gamey! The From Kozhikode is a Amma Mess Fish Curry with rice water (which reminds me of the scallion sauce in chinese butcher meat shops) and beatroot pickle. The curry itself was spicy and already had a lot of flavor so I did not really use the two dipping sauces. Aside from the Malabar Parotha for sides, we also got the Guruprasad Dosa. It comes perfectly crispy with 4 dipping sauces. So good! I love the potato and green sauce. For desserts, they ran out of the coconut curry leaf Ice-Cream so we got one coconut payasam and one sunset dessert. The sunset dessert is a trio dessert nicely placed in a shell plate. It included steamed modak dumplings, elada mousse, and halwa jackfruit. All three desserts are very coconuty and has an acquired taste. The coconut payasam is a pineapple with guava gelatin and coconut base dessert that has a strong malai taste. This was better than the trio for me but not that much better. As for drinks, one person for the curry leaf cocktail, two people got the Kokum cocktail, and three people got the Lassi. The lassi is a combination of guava, coconut, pineapple, and Greek yogurt flavor. It was more coconut and pineapple flavor to me as I did not taste the guava at all. Unfortunately, they do not have any mango or rose flavored lassi which I was craving. Overall, great restaurant to try out! Portions are quite small with prices on the higher end. Came here for a 12:45 reservation on a Saturday! We arrived a bit early but were seated immediately. Asked if we had dined there before which we had not and they briefly explained the menu. Kanyakumari opens the night with a complimentary mug of warm, savory broth, which is either a lovely gesture of hospitality or the restaurant's polite way of saying "buckle up, there's a lot more coming." Both turned out to be true. We started with a trio from the small plates menu, one dish From Chefs Special, one From Mumbai, and one From Kanyakumari, and each one made its own case for being the favorite. The Mumbai selection turned out to be the Samrat Vada Pav, pillowy glazed buns stuffed with crispy spiced potato fritters, tangy chutneys, and pickled red onion, topped with a fried curry leaf and chili for garnish that dared you to bite it whole (I did, no regrets, some tears, but the flavor is highly recommended to try). From Kanyakumari, the Hira Anna Fried Chicken with fried garlic crumbs, arrived as impossibly crispy, deeply spiced bites tossed with fried curry leaves, the kind of dish that makes you keep "just one more piece" until the plate is suspiciously empty. The Chefs Special, Steamed Prawns Idli with garlic podi and Gunter coconut chutney, came out looking like it washed up from the sea itself, soft steamed rounds nestled in a scallop shell with a bright, tangy chili chutney and a pop of mustard seed that tied the whole bite together. For the entree, we split From Maharashtra, the Malvani Chicken with coconut, black stone flower, and triphala spice, a rich, slow simmered curry with real depth and a little heat that builds without ever turning into a punishment. We rounded it out with a side of ghee rice, fragrant and glossy in the best way, and the Guruprasad Dosa, a dosa roughly the size of a small canoe, crisp and golden on the outside, soft within, and served with sambhar and chutney good enough to justify ordering the dosa on its own next time. Service moved at a great pace all night, attentive but never hovering, and the staff seemed genuinely happy to talk through the menu when we had questions about what we were ordering. The space has a warm, layered feel, ornate plates and shell dishes and mismatched serveware that somehow makes the whole table look intentional rather than chaotic, and the lighting kept things cozy without turning the photos into a guessing game. Kanyakumari is the rare restaurant where the appetizers alone could make a full meal, and yet somehow you will still order the dosa. Five stars, and I'm already plotting the return trip. read more

Amazing experience at Kanyakumari. First time visiting, and I can already say it's the best Indian food I've had in North America so far. The South Indian flavors really come through, bold, spicy, and genuinely complex in all the right ways. Everything was excellent, but I'd highly recommend the dosa and the dry baby goat curry (it was a special, so not sure if it'll be on the menu when you go). I also had the pleasure of meeting the chef, who had just moved from Lungi, and made sure to give him his well-deserved compliments. Service was decent, though I did have to follow up on my cocktail. Had such a great date night at Kanyakamuri this past Saturday. My boyfriend took me, and wow -- this place is not your standard Indian restaurant. The flavors were familiar but done in a way that felt totally new, really thoughtful, and genuinely delicious. We started with the "From Goa" clams, and they completely blew us away. Super flavorful, aromatic, and such a unique preparation -- plus the portion was way bigger than we expected. For our main, we shared the "From Manglore" shrimp curry with ghee rice and the Malabar parotha, and every single thing was spectacular. Rich, balanced, and cooked perfectly. The ambiance was warm, inviting, and interesting -- definitely more character than the typical, minimal restaurant decor you see everywhere. They specialize in coastal Indian. We were lucky to get a walk in on Sunday at 5pm just as they opened. Shortly after being seated the place was filled with eager diners. We shared the GuruPrasad dosa and Maharashtra chicken curry for two. It was a shareable amount for a lighter dinner. I will definitely be back to try the mussels Koliwada. The dosa was delicious and so crispy. The achars and sides included were marvelous. The curry was nice , not super exciting but the chicken was cooked to perfection. Small annoyance: The curry dish, flavorful as it was, came without rice -which felt essential given the consistency. Without it, you're essentially eating curry like soup (?) which I do not think is the intention. Rice was an additional $8, and there was no mention from the server that it wasn't included. My favorite dishes were the beef and the chicken curry. The fried chicken reminded me of popcorn chicken (my partner disagrees.) For the price, I was a bit disappointed by the experience when we checked in. Our reservation was at 5, we arrived around 5:15, and received a heads up that they would need our table back at 6pm. The confirmation text stated very clearly that for parties of 2-4 the dining time is 90 minutes. I completely understand if we're late and it eats into our 90 minute time but that wasn't the case. We had a great group dinner here with a half dozen of us, allowing us to sample a good bit of the menu. We found everything to be delicious, especially appreciating the diverse influences across many southern states of India. I've spent a good amount of time across southern India and found the flavors to be really authentic, while adding a chef-y and playful note making dishes that aren't necessarily perfect recreations of anything you'd get in India. The service was very strong. We called in advance and they let us squeeze 5 into a 4-top, but then after we were there for 10 minutes they had a larger table opening early and were able to move us over - which was very nice. The service was informative and responsive, without hovering, exactly what you want from a nicer dining establishment. I was at this Indian spot a while ago with a group as per most of my recent reviews. They specialize in more costal Indian food which is a bit unique as the only spots that really did this before was the now closed Kokum in Curry Hill on Lex and a handful of dishes at the excellent Chola in the East 50s. In general the food quality was good with properly prepared proteins though it is a bit pricey for the portion sizes (especially when factoring in having to pay a lot extra for rice ($8 for ghee) or a small piece of bread ($7 parotha.) The staff was alright forgetting to add the chicken till the end until we asked about it again. Our first dish was the "From Kocchi" for $30 with toddy duck roast and cucumber salad. The small dish had a nice presentation and good flavor. There was a good mixture of textures from the crunch from the cucumber to the duck which was a mix of drier chewier pieces and softer ones. It was unique and pretty tasty. Second best of the evening arrived next which was the "From Malabar" for $35 listed as slow cooked black gold beef, madras onion, and chili. The beef which was still on the bone was very tender and well spiced with a bit of heat to it but not too much along with a mélange a flavors from the masala with the onion giving a good extra flavor. I wish it wasn't only one small bone as the meat was cooked expertly but I would still recommend from the flavor. Next was the "From Kozhikode" for $42 or amma mess fish curry, rice water, and beetroot pickle where the curry was poured over the well roasted fish. The fish was tender and the curry had some sourness to it along with some some heat. The beetroot pickle was unique and alright while the rice water was a throwaway but a unique one at that. In terms of portion to price, this was probably the best deal of what we ordered though this is without factoring in the overpriced rice and bread. Last was our favorite which was the "From Kanyakumari" for $22 listed as Hira Anna fried chicken with fried garlic crumbs. This was the most reasonably priced dish otherwise and it was well made. The chicken which was fried into strips had a good texture and was pretty spicy with some flavor from the aforementioned garlic. The sauce on the side paired nicely as well. This was tasty and I am happy we mentioned to the waiter that it hadn't arrived. I decided to order a dessert as I'm a big fan of payasam. Said Coconut Payasam for $16 had pineapple, guava, young coconut, and payasam. The dish was artfully presented almost looking like a shoreline with the coconut being poured from a shell though this all made it a tad difficult to eat. I found it a bit sweet probably because of the guava which was unfortunate as the coconut flavor was lovely and the grilled pineapple was a wonderful addition. It lacked the payasam flavor lor texture I was looking for but it was interesting at least. I dislike a good amount of Mehta's spots such as Laut and found his previous Peranakan spot from the same group Kebaya here better but chef Shinde here has done a nice job creating elevated versions of coastal Indian food. It's not my favorite fancier Indian spot but it's good. I'd try more here regardless of price point. read more

Kanyakumari blew our taste buds away! We were genuinely surprised to find such authentic South Indian cuisine right in the heart of ManhattanLimited seating with a cool vibe and easy street parking . This place is a party in the mouth -- bold Kerala-style seafood, unapologetically spicy, and refreshingly not watered down for non-desi palates. We showed up on a whim from Chicago -- no reservation, on my birthday. The hostess (a European lady) was extremely standoffish and rude, glaring at us like we didn't belong. Not the warmest welcome. Thankfully, Jane the manager and Ramson came through and graciously accommodated us. The food made it all worth it. Standouts included the curried clams, prawns, and vada pav -- absolutely killer flavors. The appam and Malabar parotta with chicken curry were comforting and perfectly executed. Chef Shinde deserves serious props for his masterful execution. I even got to meet Tejas, the sous-chef, who was super sweet and surprised me with a birthday treat -- their signature coconut payasam. Union square is super convenient, but often the food options aren't great. I am pleased to say that's not the case at Kanyakumari. The only reason I'm giving this restaurant 4 stars instead of 5 is because while everything was really good, the beef was the only thing I will really remember and even venture back for. I liked everything else, but it hit that "very good but not memorable" thing in my brain. The service was great - our waiter definitely helped us make a good decision. The atmosphere is a little rough around the edges, but not bad by any means. There's something unassuming about it that makes you question if it really is in the Michelin guide. At the end of the day, the thing I remember and why I'll likely go back (beyond location) is that when most Indian restaurants in the city feel somewhat American-ized (there are certain staples you expect to see on the menu), Kanyakumari offers something different. Easily the best Indian meal I have ever had in my entire life. What an easy 5 star meal and over all experience. Kanyakumari is an unassuming restaurant that anyone could easily just walk right past but after doing a little research my wife knew we had to eat here. Inside was dark with some nice understated decorative touches. The service was exceptional as well. Our waiter was very kind and always had a gleaming smile on his face. Excellent drinks. We enjoyed the Mango, Curry Leaf, Filtered Coffee, and even asked for a Lassi with a Dark Rum floater on top. They were happy to oblige. The Guruprasad Dosa on its own was divine but with the condiments it was served with sent us both to another place. We were also served a spicy tomato broth as an amuse bouche. So incredibly intense, it woke my palette right back up. The From Kochii was able to incorporate cold cucumber into a warm duck dish beautifully. The From Andhra Pradesh was a spicy surprise. We had no idea what we were ordering when we ordered it, but it had a fried and chewy texture that was very pleasant and the sauce it was tossed in was perfect. The star of the show was the From Kanyakumari. I won't say anything else except this was a top 5 chicken dish of all time for me. Was it a pricey meal? Yes. Worth every penny? Absolutely. Had a great experience and dinner at Kanyakumari! All our dishes were delicious and the ambiance was great. We started with the guntur idli which ended up being one of my favorite dishes of the night. For mains we got the mangalore prawn curry, kozhikode fish curry, guruprasad dosa, and Malabar paratha. The fish curry was my favorite main dish we ordered. The fish tasted so fresh and I loved the curry itself as well. No dishes automatically come with rice, but we ordered a Malabar paratha which helped us finish off the curries. Overall it was a delicious dinner and I'd love to come back and try more dishes soon! read more

Great Indian restaurant with authentic flavors and fantastic service! We decided to try this spot out, after seeing it ranking among the top Indian restaurant spots in NYC. Vibes were boho chic-- perfect for a night out with friends or for date night. - From Malabar: 10/10 (tender beef in a really yummy, flavorful curry sauce. I can see why this is one of their signature dishes.) - Shrimp curry: 10/10 (slightly spicy curry with juicy shrimp pieces) - Fish curry: 9/10 (fish marinated in curry sauce. Great flavors throughout. The fried chicken appetizer and fried idli were outstanding, and the goat biryani was the star of the meal. The fish curry was a bit disappointing, but overall this is an excellent spot that's definitely worth a visit. read more
