My first two calls to Kapaa Animal Clinic around 230pm, the woman told me to give my dog Gatorade and that she would talk to the vet and call me back. She said my dog was having common symptoms of eating / drinking something bad and that she'd proably be fine. At 2 am i finally got an answer to come in. But my sweetie died at 2:30am of dehydration. She needed fluids... She most likely could have been saved. They charged me $200 to hand me my dog in a paper bag 2 weeks later. I will never forgive myself for trusting that woman to call me and for trusting that my dog was having common symptoms and would be ok. She gave me her MEDICAL OPINION AND ADVICE THAT LET ME DOG DIE. I was only apolozed to by others when I went to them asking for answers. I was told theyd speak to management about the issue. I was given no follow up from management. I asked again, why didnt she call me back? Why didnt this woman lose her job? Why could no one explain her careless, dismissive behavior? My best friend is dead at 7 years old and she could have been saved. They did not fire her or have her apologize to me. They paid her to let my dog die. They continue to pay her to give us false information and to not call us back while our pets suffer. She will be paid to let your pets die on her watch too. This isn't just about her negligence, but about how the management is responding (by not responding all) not even offering to creamte my girl that died due to their negligence. It is also about how they are probaly treating and overworking their own employees to a point where they are butnt out- forgetting or choosing to not call back a patient that's been bleeding for hours. Why did I not get a call from management or the nelgigent person? Why have I told this story to multiple people in the community and they have replied with their own story of negligence at this facility and they drive double the time to any other vet on island? Why is my dog dead? Why was I so trusting? Why did I let her tone manipulate how to handle my dogs care? Update: It has been one month since the Kapaa animal clinic neglectfully my killed my dog, no calls from management, no consequences for the women that lied to me and refused my dog care. She still has her job. They DO NOT CARE. I was an established patient and they refused me emergency care during buisness hours and didn't answer the emergency line. Since telling my story, many people have had the same thing happen there. Just the week before, a woman's dog bled out in their waiting room while they refused to bring them back for fluids. This is unacceptable. Please establish your pets at ANY other vet on the island as this one will let your pet die in an emergency. read more

I recently lost my baby girl Mijha. We needed to make one of the hardest decision and We were devastated. Dr. Bryce, his tech ( I forget what his name is but he's been there a long time) and the staff were compassionate, helpful and informative. Early the same day I was given an appointment in the afternoon. I sat in a hot car with no AC for an hour waiting with a very distressed kitty. They said they were coming and never did -- so I carried the cage in doors and they ignored me. It was awful!!! The "receptionist" wouldn't give me eye contact and treated me like I did something wrong. People like this should not be serving others. Especially people who have sick animals. Then the vet doesn't have a clue what to do about my cats ears. Keeps harping on getting test for kidney failure -- something we tested for a few months ago (I told her this). She wasn't focused and very strange. And I waited another hour and they gave me an itemized bill for a surgery that would cost $3500. My dog had seizures for the second time. First time, they couldn't diagnosed the problem, which is understandable, since seizures can occur for many reasons. The second time we took him to the vet for seizures, they kept him overnight. We called in the morning the check on him and they told us that he passed away. It was infuriating to have to call them to tell us the news. 1. They should have called us right away. At least right when they opened. 2. They "think" he passed away earlier that morning, which means no one was there supervising him all night, since they had no clue of time of death. That means he died alone and that breaks my heart. 3. They still didn't know exactly what caused it. They said it could've been lepto. But they did blood tests and everything came out negative. 4. We went to say our goodbyes and he was left in a garbage bag in the storage room. If it was lepto, then I can see why he was covered, but at least make him look more presentable. Maybe a blanket over the bag? A little empathy goes a long way. We switched vets. We now go to Kaua'i Northshore Animal Clinic, who goes above and beyond for our family. read more

I cant tell you how great these people are. Dr Polloi and the staff she has are so great with my dogs. Both rescues who aren't very social. I had to bring my bigger dog in to get checked up on today and he is very protective and gets nervous around new people. They know exactly how to handle him and I really appreciate it because I have been to other vets who have made us feel stupid or like a bad dog owner because the dog is scared or gets protective and starts barking at the clinic. This is a great clinic to go to for first-time pet owners in the Kapaa area. I became a customer when I got my first dog and I think this clinic is very organized. Not only did they see me within a 15 minute window of each of my scheduled appointments but my visits usually lasted no more than 30 minutes (even if I had concerns they were addressed immediately). The clinic is very good at refilling medication, printing clear and easy to understand invoices, and scheduling future appointments. Each appointment came out to roughly the same price as well considering I was getting all my dogs necessary shots. The only thing I would point out is that this clinic is usually always busy, so walk-ins are tough and immediate appointments are usually not a guarantee. read more

The front desk does not care if your animal lives or dies. Do not use these guys as your primary veterinary clinic because if you call in with an actual emergency, they will not see your animal. They will tell you to go to a different clinic on the island & pro tip: no clinic on this island will see your animal if you are not already an established client of theirs. So do not use this clinic as your primary care provider for your animal, because if your animal is sick they will not see you. and if it's a true emergency, she's likely to die. read more

The vets and vet techs are great, but some of the women who work in front are just unbelievably rude, angry and mean. Updating based on owners response: we are not remembering the same conversation. I hear what you're saying. However, the other vet in his care told me that she was not coming in that day. When I asked what you were going to do for him on that day, since your assessment of him showed no improvement, you let me know you were too busy. My questions regarding his medication needs were just that....questions. How would I even know what to "demand". That's why people ask questions. You repeated your schedule was packed and you were too busy. You weren't too busy to bill me for that hospitalized day! I feel badly that she had to come in when she told me you were going to be handling his care. What I find interesting is that no one there can apologize for their own rude behavior. I understand from several that your dad would not have tolerated the rudeness that we had to endure during such a stressful time. My suggestion is for more professionalism within the entire office, except for the techs. The techs are wonderful. Worst place on the island for rudeness. The techs are great. The vets are ok for routine check ups, but not for the two emergencies I have experienced. Dr Bryce does not like to be questioned or have a second opinion request. The front desk worker, Lea, is the rudest, most racially biased person we have met on the island. If you are local, she may smile at you. If you are mainland, forget about it. She will sneer, and almost growls like a dog. When we complained to office manager, she said it was due to us asking to speak with the vet. How dare we want to talk to someone who knows what's going on. We have six animals and dropped thousands of dollars over the years, trying to ignore their racist rude behavior, but now we are done. I cannot say enough great things about Kapa'a Animal Clinic. They took excellent care of our cat for routine check ups and shots since 2012. Unfortunately, she was diagnosed with oral cancer in 2022. They were very professional and compassionate and told us exactly what to expect. When it was time for euthanasia, it was done with so much kindness and care. We have never had a problem getting in to see the doctor(s). The front desk staff is wonderful - professional, caring and efficient. In the beginning of this year my chloe belle had to have surgery to remove both eyes due to glaucoma. The staff there was so great with not only her but me as well. They knew I was so emotional about having this done and did everything to reassure me that it was gonna be ok. Her surgery went great... 3 days later she was moving around and trying to get back to normal and in a couple weeks it was like she was back to her old self. Best part was she had no more pain. She is now 7 month post surgery and she acts like she still has eyes. It is incredibly amazing how they adapt to removing their eyes. She wont play with her sister but I think it's just cause she cant see and gets caught off guard. But she plays with me and our new kitten. But hands down kapaa animal clinic took care of us and we will forever be grateful. Chloe-belle and Loki They also removed a tumor from my other dog Piper which was awesome as well. No problems and no infections. All out great service. There is a couple of front desk girls that doesn't seem very friendly. And to tell the truth I almost didnt go back after our first visit when we first moved here because of that. In order to be seen the same day as a walk in said I would have to just wait with my dog in my car in their parking lot - could be several hours they estimated - but I live less then 5 minutes away - and I suggested they call me when I could come down - They said I couldnt go back home but would have to stay and wait in their parking lot, in the hot day etc with no shade. April 15,2021... I lucked out as someone had just cancelled, so I could bring Bud in for an ear Hematoma (balloon ear) right then! Dr Imamura diagnosed and treated a yeast infection in his ear (may have caused too much head shaking), the options for Hematoma treatment with printout of details for an operation should I choose. I've had a few generations of pets treated here including a few surgeries with great results. Both Dr Patrick Ahana, and his son Dr Bryce, and most of the additional Vets, and staff, are born and raised on Kauai, live Aloha, are respectful and professional. read more

My experience is from 3 or 4 months ago and I had gone there a few times already with different doctors and never had a problem.. this time was because I came home and my 12 year old dog was not moving much and seemed to be in a lot of pain.. I was terrified and took him in next day.. We saw Dr Christie and right away I knew was gonna be bad experience .. the assistant (tall girl ) just seemed so Non Compassionate and and they made me Wait forever. Finally they didn blood work and x Ray and ultra sound thing and found really nothing . Total cost of all that was little over $500 ...she said the his kidney number was off .. and so I had no answers and nothing to give him to make him comfortable because his kidney number being off can't give him medicine.. Just felt like she didn't know what she's doing and kept looking thru books ... and her tech just seem to not give a rats ass to what was happening ... I am Distraught worrying that he's dieing.. She even mentioned she should have shaved his belly hair when she did ultra sound to get better view ..they sent me home and I asked what happens if I need to take him in middle of night and they remind me the cost of emergency care and they also mentioned costs a couple other times .. if I wanna know price I will Ask!!! It's tacky .. I would pay whatever for my Animals .. they seem to nickel and dime and all they care about is money .. The next day I went back in to get he records and blood test results so I could take him to Lihue vet and the lab assistant (tall Hawaiian girl) asked how my dog was doing and I told her the same.. And she told me "well his livers no good " and I couldn't believe she can even say something so insensitive. She's not the doctor and don't know crap obviously . I took him to Lihue vet and they are very compassionate and Dr haus within minutes figured out it was a Spinal injury by having he dog stand and lifting each paw and see how the dogs paw reacts.. very simple test .... a good doctor would go thru all the possible simple things first u would think right ??? So right away he gave him a small Dose of pain medicine ..I felt horrible cause at the Kapaa Clinic she had him laying on his back to do the ultra sound and it must have been so painful !!!being that it's a spinal injury after all ughhhhhh poor dog I had him rest comfortable and gave him medicine everyday and finally after about a week of not eating ( I was forcing him food ) he finally did and went to bathroom.. prob cost me less than a hundred dollars if that ! Thank u DR haus!! I'm so glad I went and got a second opinion .. I will never go back to Kapaa clinic again! Not even for flea and tick nothing !! Bad decisions by bad doctor and insensitive technicians that have no compassion or empathy towards dog owners who are worried to death about their animals!! Horrible experience !! I've been taking my cats to Kapaa Animal clinic since 2006. In oct of 2021 we were off island and my neighbor took care of our cats. The night we left, somehow our cat coco damaged her eye. She had other cuts on her face also. I called kapaa animal clinic from FL the next day to see when Coco could be seen for this emergency. They said they were booked and all I could do was come in the morning in this 2 hr period and wait in the car with the cat and they would accept some walk ins on a first come first serve basis if time permitted and that they would call me in my car! . I told them I was off island & that my neighbor was taking care of the cat. They said sorry that was all they could offer. My neighbor kept coco inside and called several veterinarians on island and they all said they couldn't take new patients. Then cocos eye turned completely opaque so I called back and said that I've never been to any other vets on the island except them and no one is taking new patients. I told them it was an emergency and that now cocos eye was completely opaque. They said we give priority to our customers that have their pets vaccinated with them regularly and that Their records showed that I hadn't been in with either of my cats in over a year! I asked for a manager, called 2 more times demabding an appt. They finally said I could come in 2 days later. They ended up doing the surgery to remove my cats eye and I will never set foot in that disgusting place again. They do not care about animals - only Money. read more

Very disappointed in this clinic. I brought my 11 year old cat in with what sounded like breathing problems, and was told that it was probably her heart murmur, and to give her pills for that because "That might fix it." When nothing changed, I brought her back in and was made to feel like I was overreacting. The vet literally yawned and leaned against the wall and said she didn't know what was wrong. She acted like she was hungover or something. I asked for blood work, which came back fine. I kept saying that I felt like it was her breathing, and the vet could not possibly have cared less. I left feeling like they were rolling their eyes at me for caring about my cat who clearly couldn't breathe well. Take your pets to Paradise Animal Clinic in Kilauea. It took one visit to get my kitty the proper care and medication. The team there was caring and professional. Doctor Fran is awesome and most the doctors are decent and respectful as well as assistants but the front desk ladies are horrible. It's unbelievable how rude they can be. The vets are awesome and so are the vet techs and the front office staff. If you have an emergency they are always there to meet you no matter what time of the day or night. You may end up waiting a while but at least your pet was seen without an appointment. If it's truly an emergency they will squeeze you in. I will continue coming here as long as I have pets and continue referring people to them. My pup and I had to wait an hour and a half after checking in to get him neutered after we've had this appointment booked for months. I don't think you should have to wait that long for a scheduled surgery. Even with other past appointments, even though they weren't surgical procedures, we still had to wait at least an hour to get in. He was actually all better by the time of my appointment, but I figured a well check wouldn't hurt. By the time I left their office my bill was almost $350, until I eliminated several items that were recommended. I feel she prescribed my dog as much medication as possible to pad the clinics pockets without harming him. Why over Medicate an older dog or any animal for that reason? There was a shot for this, a pill for that, a gummy wrap to take the pill, and a test for this and a supply of chews for that. Too Much already! Trying to pay your bill here is another story. I have been coming to Kapaa Animal Vet Clinic for almost 10 years now. I moved to Oahu a year ago and I fly back with my dog to take him here because I trust them that much and refuse to change my vet. They have saved my dogs life on numerous occasions. I had two french bulldogs and now only have 1. My dog was very sick and Dr.Bryce and the whole team helped me make her life as comfortable as possible. When she died they called me to walk me through my options when i was a absolute mess. I am a complete crazy dog lady... attached to my animals like children. I couldn't be more thankful for all the work the team at this office as done for me. The front desk staff being accommodating with schedule and all the doctor assistants being truly loving and genuine. My dog is fighting cancer for a second time. NEVER AGAIN Something has changed at this place and they have become very difficult to work with. they won't sell parasite protection without without charging for other testing that has already been done and is good for a year. however they want to charge me again after only 5 months because I did not buy a full year of protection at that time. I just want to protect my dog from parasites, not pay the overhead for the clinic. They are difficult and condescending when trying to explain or discussing the best treatment for MY dog. Moved off island not too long ago and took both of my dogs here for their check ups, shots, meds, etc. The staff was friendly and helpful about the basics, prices were decent, but when it came to the care for one of my dogs I was taken aback by their "oh well" attitude. One of my dogs is prone to growths and over the years, through the different states we've lived, she's had about half dozen surgeries to remove these lumps. Well, while living on island, we discovered two more. One about the size of a marble on her chest, and the other about the size of a ping pong ball on her side by her shoulder. Big enough if she stood straight, you can see it bulging out a bit. And if you ran your hand across it, it was extremely obvious. You could grab it with your hand, move it around, etc. No mystery. Well, before we scheduled surgery, they did biopsies for both, Vet had no problem finding on their own where they were... all seemed normal. Well, day of surgery, we take her down, we wait all day, go to pick her up... they only removed the marble sized one. Said they "couldn't find" the OBVIOUS one, even though receptionist identified it herself as our dog was walked out without even feeling her side... Said we could schedule ANOTHER surgery... meaning we'd have to pay these fees all over again. Seriously? After that, we did not go back again. The staff here is wonderful caring and compassionate!!! Fran Azeka is the most caring and wonderful person. Great at her job and lovely to work with. If it wasnt for her we may have opted to put our beloved golden down. After a horrible seizure that immobilized her, Fran had the optimism that she would recover, gave her around the clock care and never gave up on our family member. Our dog went from total paralysis to rolling in the sand and swimming at the beach again!! What ever happens with our dog from here we are so thrilled and blessed to have more time with her, and so happy to have had to support of the Kappa animal clinic. I've never been so disappointed in MY LIFE! My dad and I spent 4 fricken hours at that damn clinic. The ladies in the front kept telling us one more, one more, ONE MORE!!! We were there right when they open 9 am... before all the other animals that were scheduled. They said one hr we waited, but, then on to the next hr, etc.. But as we got inside just to get a little cooler we saw them with our dogs file and what they do put it in the back so we still waited even longer and as more people started to come and go we were up front but more ppl walked in and what they do they put move our dogs file all the way to the back making us stay a lot longer..I know we should've made an appointment, but it was an unexpected LAST MINUTE EMERGENCY for our oldest dog and the lady on the phone said we just had to wait ONE HOUR, but no we waited 4 hours. My dad went to check one more time and see if we we're next and lady said "one more before you guys." So we waited yet again then we both saw the workers slipped 2 files in front of our dogs file. Right then and there we were done with that place! So disappointed and mad and wanted to yell at them! How can they make us wait THAT long for check up my dog, ridiculous!! Not once they tried to tell us "Sorry you guys are waiting so long" or, "Do you mind rescheduling?" or literally anything so we wouldn't just be sitting there the entire day!! Brought my beloved cat here today- he and I were treated with respect and care- all questions were answered appropriately and he received great care! I would definitely go back. I'm sure this business has issues with payment - a lot of reviews seem to be geared towards the cost. In my view it takes A LOT to runs larger clinic like this, and the cost was appropriate for an "urgent " visit. I would advise people , before you adopt a pet, to think responsibly and make sure you have the means or an emergency fund for pet related care .
