I usually look for a spot of green on the GPS in the form of a city park. On a recent shopping trip to the Waikele Outlets, I was pleasantly surprised how beautiful the nearby Waikele Community Park is! We dropped off the shopper and drove just a few minutes. The park is shaped like a giant half circle with golf condos behind trees around it. The parking lot is very large with plenty of shaded parking. This park is awash in amenities: public clean restrooms, a community pool with generous hours (although be prepared for unexpected closings), a recreation office with many classes and activities, and picnic area (by permit). Everything we explored was spotless, no trash here. Uphill from the pool is a large open field perfect to play games, set up volleyball nets or tents. There was a large family gathering happening while we were there, and it looked so relaxing and shady. This is as perfect as an Oahu city park can be!

It shares an entrance with Pearl Harbor Elementary School. The park has two ball fields, a basketball court, tennis/pickleball court, and restrooms. The restrooms are open 24/7 which unfortunately has people in it for no reason at all. It just does not make it safe to use the bathroom when there are others just there. If it weren't for the bathrooms, then this place would be pretty decent. But the bathrooms bring this place down. The courts themselves are in ok. And the ball fields, while not spectacular, are decent. There are bleachers, but the ones under the trees are graffitied up. I know it sounds like I should bring the ratings down some more, but the park is usable. Parking is above the park, so be prepared to walk the stairs or take the ramp down. And for irony, the police station is right up mauka from the park, but you won't find any cops hanging around here.

7-15-22 Third time this week Bud asked to come. He enjoys the soaking mechanism at the Splash…read morePark and going to the big pool. He split our pool time to spend some time by the slides at the playground. Checking in with Mililani resident IDs gets us our wristbands. We seem to come at the height of the sun's strongest rays between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. It gives us a good 45 minutes of outdoor activity and the freedom of no masks for a little while. Fridays it opens later so it kinda throws off lunch and nap time but in the car ride home he took a little kitty nap. I'm not sure why little kids aren't allowed swim vests if they are not strong swimmers but there must be a good reason. I've seen between 1 to 3 life guards on duty at a time. Some more serious than others on watch. Saw for the first time a life guard testing the water in the baby pool and big pool then logging down his findings. Being at prime summer time more and more kiddies are seen at Rec 4 with grandparents or parents. If you time it right you can enjoy the 3 areas and leave when it starts to get crowded.

Why? Because they have the cutest splash park, playground, and a warm pool/kiddie pool. What they don't have is a water slide and shave ice/Starbucks, but no biggie, we can make do without. Anywho's, with lots of precautions and not much places i would take my infant to, we decided to celebrate his first birthday here. Limit of 10 people inside so we had to wait a long while. Good thing they were open pretty late, til 7pm! You need to have an MTA pass or go as a guest with someone who has and pay $10 per guest per day. It's street parking along the fence, facing the playground and splash park or anywhere you can find. But between those two is the entrance. Mask on when entering, exiting or when not in the water. No floaties allowed. Have fun!

But, the end of the slide is quite a way off the ground so it was a little difficult for the 3.5 yr old to hop off of. We had to carry the 2 yr old off. There are prickly weeds that grow around the back and sides. Since it's a sand playground, you can't see the loose prickly pieces and both my daughter and I got poked. It did look like a lot of fun for the other older kids and we'll probably try when my kids are a bit older so hopefully they'll do some landscaping on the weeds by then. We also saw a few kids spitting water in the sand and making spit-water sand balls. Gross.
