New Mexico may be the only place you get chips and salsa with breakfast, but I like it! My dad and my niece come here often, and assured me that even though the neighborhood is super sketchy, the food is good. This place looks like the coffee shops I remember going to as a kid--labs rock walls and a counter with seats. Our server was super sweet and helpful, and came back often to see if we needed anything. I had a delicious carne adovada stuffed sopapilla. We also ordered French toast with eggs and bacon and a carne adovada omelet with hashbrowns and a pancake, and everyone enjoyed their very large breakfasts. Five stars for the wonderful waitress they have, with so much personality. Zero stars today for the very poor plate of tacos he/she served me. Boo to the cook. The taco meat had been sitting on the back burner most of the day. I walked in at 1:10 pm and they close at 2 pm. Horrible dried up ground beef. Can't believe I am paying for dried up tacos, and the cook served me just that, instead of making me fresh ground beef. Next the Spanish Rice was also very dry and cold. The cook could not at least get it warmed up, no because it was so dried up rice, warming it up would not work. Very nasty plate I was served. The beans were good, yet they were luke warm. The only thing that was fresh on my plate was the sopaipilla and the guacamole. Otherwise, what a freaking mess I was serviced. I guess I am done with Kap's. Sorry because you all have a wonderful up-front staff. There should be a restaurant rule, that they can't serve food that has been sitting around for more than a hour drying up that should not be served to their visitors. read more

The neighborhood isn't great and the building and furniture have seen better days so I was skeptical but I sat down anyway. I was very pleasantly surprised. The food was very good including my poached eggs, sausage patties, toast, and hash browns. I've had better hash browns but these were good and I ate them all. The service was excellent - the sort of thing you expect from highly experienced wait staff in a very well managed store. Friendly enough but not too friendly, clearly adjusting their interactions based on customer preference. I don't care for much chit-chat but others nearby obviously did. What a difference a few years and pandemic make. The food and service were excellent. My coffee cup stayed full. The chorizo & egg were flavorful without the often accompanying grease. It was a meal without the hiccups of our first stop. While not a knock on the business the city's failure to rein in rampant and unchecked homelessness in the area may cause the faint hearted to pass Kap's by. When you're craving diner food, this is a great spot to check out. It's very low key but the prices are good and you get a ton of food. My grandparents really like going and we go when they come into town. I personally really love the cinnamon coffee, it is super good and smells amazing. I usually get the chicken fried steak which has large portions and is more than enough for leftovers. Service is always great and fast. read more

Today was a challenge at this otherwise rock-steady establishment. 30 minutes to get pancakes after ordering first, and watching the dining room get their plates first is unacceptable. Sounds like they got new cooks and they are cutting their teeth on the regulars. Need to re-think my trips down here. read more

What a great and unexpected surprise! Fellow helpers have rated this diner pretty well and we were in the area yesterday so we gave it a try. First impression: nice fellow diners! People that held doors, said good morning and wished you a nice day. Next: the server. Most friendly person I've met in a long time. She was welcoming and genuinely seemed to like her job. I got the carne adovada and eggs, but it was the hash brown that amazed me...may have been the best I've ever had. The backstory is that I usually avoid potatoes for breakfast because the a generally mushy and laden w/extra calories that I can spend elsewhere. I ordered the hash browns extra crispy and when it arrived, it actually was! I don't know how the cook did it, but it was super crispy all around and had a soft potato Center. Kap's is close to the place I work, when I work in Albuquerque. Yet, I've never been there. What was I thinking? This place is great!! It's got that old diner feel about it, but there's nothing wrong with that. The food is excellent and the service is fantastic. My waitress came by frequently to see how I was doing. She never let the ice tea go below half full. The manager also checked in with me to see how I was enjoying my meal. Very attentive. I was extra hungry and so I ordered the Huevos Rancheros. This is the "diner" I've been looking for....quintessential in every way. I was tickled by the black and white photos of mid century Albuquerque...the place was clean and crisp, and the staff was simply superb. Stephanie was such a joy...we were trying to decide which burrito to get, and when we asked if we could sample the carne adovada, without hesitation she brought us a chunk of the gold and let me tell you it was killer, falling apart with just the slightest nudge of the fork. We ordered christmas chile smothered on top, and it was NOMdotcom people. The cinnamon roll was off da hook, the perfect sidekick for the cinnamon coffee. Such a combination of ingredients could've been great, though, so what happened? The breakie burrito was mediocre by all accounts, the sausage too sweet, and the pancakes were typical diner cakes. Maybe I shoulda tried the cinnamon roll instead... The server was sweet and attentive, but she didn't make the whole experience worth $50 (41 + tip) for a family-of-four diner-breakfast. I'm thinking if the prices were 20% lower, it might've wow'ed me. Have visited several times for breakfast with family. My father and daughter are picky eaters and have never been disappointed. The food is New Mexican and priced lower than other comparable restaurants. The staff is always friendly and the food arrives quickly. The restaurant is comfortable, an older building but updated and clean. There are not many tables so the volume is very good for conversation. If you like Loyola's or Frontier you'll appreciate Kaps. Went there for lunch because my coworker swore they had the best chicken fried steak anywhere. Man was he wrong. It looks at taste like it came out of a box, which is not a real chicken fry. Real chicken fried steak is dipped in batter before frying, not bread crumbs. With it was eggs over easy, which was the best part of the plate. The hash browns are fried in bacon grease, so you get this nasty potato shell full of mush as a side. Also came with sourdough toast and "homemade" jam, which tasted like it came from a smuckers jar. They probably should replace the window with the bullet hole in it. Just saying. Overall disappointed and will not return. read more

OMG. I finally made it to Kap's. I'm sorry I never went sooner. From the street view, it looks very unassuming, strictly a diner. An american fare diner is what I thought. Not too usually in the mood for a patty melt and fries with a milkshake. Although breakfast, I do love. Anytime of day, but especially for breakfast, and to top it off, on a Sunday. Something about a real good breakfast on Sunday mornings, are just right. That's what brought met to Kap's, I heard some talk about their cinnamon roll, better than Frontier, which for me, is a plus, because I am not much a fan of theirs. We were seated and I order a roll before breakfast and some coffee. I was offered their cinnamon coffee, which I gladly accepted, must be one of their niches. It was a pleasant taste, just a faint cinnamon flavor not overpowering the coffee, great company for the actual cinnamon roll. As for brekkie, I decided on their old fashioned french toast. It did not disappoint! It looked good, smelled great and tasted wonderful! The texas toast dipped in the batter gives it just enough weight that when it sits cooking on the griddle, the edges get nice and browned, giving it that little crunch. Everything was just oh, so, darn good. I should mention that do a good choice of new mexican favorites like, a hand held or smothered breakfast burrito, or a huevos rancheros if you'r feeling something more hearty. I can't forget to mention our service. It was stellar. I didn't get his name, but this guy was a gentleman. He kept our coffees full and didn't bother when we were eating which is always nice. I do like to stuff my face with a little privacy. You see me eating happily, there's no need to ask if everything is good, you'll know its good when my plate is clean. We're talking clean. Kap's is a old fashioned- Route 66 diner. It is family owned restaurant and steady stream of regular customers make it their stop for breakfast on any given day. They have a lot of New Mexican cuisine in their menu. I always get Kap's combo which is absolutely yummy. It has chicken/beef taco, cheese enchiladas, Chile relleno, red or green Chile, sopapillas, beans and rice. If you are new to New Mexican cuisine and would like to taste a little bit of everything, I'd highly recommend this combo.
