I am so sad to say I had a truly terrible experience with Karen Karch's retail operation - ending in tears. Being a decidedly drama free woman, this is saying something. After months of research to find my dream engagement ring, I finally found Karen's exquisite work online and a few months later, I made a point during a business trip to go to her shop on Mulberry Street. I found that her work is indeed worthy of its praise and left with 2 rings chosen for my boyfriend to choose between. Sadly, her sales staff are incredibly indiscreet and instead of dealing with him exclusively on the ring purchase, contacted me directly 2 days after getting his email (and only one week after my visit), asking me to clarify some of his questions. I also learned she never spoke to him, and perhaps as a sales tactic thought it smarter to involve me rather than speak to him by phone. This is after they told me they knew to contact only him after I left, and that they knew how to handle surprises. Having had zero knowledge he even had spoken to them, her emails came as a shock, and went into detail on his questions and let me know his plans were in action. While the surprise was ruined, more than anything a really special moment was turned into an upsetting day. I went from over the moon to very disappointed and my poor boyfriend feels like his trust was betrayed. More than anything I am frustrated that the sales staff didn't even have the courtesy to pick up the phone and apologize to my him. It would have meant a lot to both of us. Perhaps being right is better than a sale, but in terms of something so momentous as an engagement, feeling special and taken care of means a lot to both of us - and it was made abundantly clear we were not important enough for even a phone call. I truly hope other people don't experience this - I've never heard of anything like it. read more

I was deeply disappointed when trying to buy a ring here a couple of years ago. My husband and I were planning our wedding and were ready to get the dreamy fantasy ring for myself. After cruising Catbird, Roseark, Broken English and Love Adorned, I decided on Karen Karsch. Such stunning designs. We were in NYC for the week and I tried to book an appointment since I wouldn't buy something like this online without trying it on. Lisa asked me to name our budget before making an appointment - which seemed really off color. Can you imagine Margiela or Rick Owens or any other luxury environment asking you how much you planned on spending before bothering to let you see the collection...um no. She then told me that she could only give me an appointment unless I 100% guaranteed I would purchase a ring on the spot and not order it at a later date. It seemed like a joke, but no it was not. Apparently the physical store was under construction, so for them to bother meeting us without a prior agreement to purchase something I had not seen was not an option, and she went on to tell me that It is totally normal to buy your wedding/engagement ring without trying it on or seeing it in person - sweet. Then they contacted me to let me know months later that the ring I was interested in had gone on sale. Day late - we had already purchased a ring and formed a relationship that has led to many more purchases with another jewelry designer. We wound up spending about three times what we thought such a ring would cost - because no walks in the door focused on spending $6,000 on an nondescript object, the magic happens when you fall in love with the item and the numbers should follow. So the name your budget before coming in approach is in very poor taste. I have never come back as this experience was frankly a tad ghetto and pushy. This jewelry store appears to have beautiful pieces. I am sure it would have been nice to buy something there. However, had an unfortunate experience with their Director of Sales, Lisa. She was a pushy sales gal which you gotta appreciate, after all that is the job of sales. However, her pushy sales tactics were so inappropriate that it ruined a surprise purchase by contacting the very person I wanted to surprise. This store has beautiful, uniquely designed jewelry, however, one should see the merchandise in person rather than shopping the web-site.
