I am writing this review in the hope that others will truly think twice before choosing Karen Horton as their surgeon. I underwent a breast lift with implants. From the beginning after surgery, I noticed serious issues. One breast sits higher and is larger than the other, and I was told it would settle, but it never did. My nipples are now significantly larger due to over-stretching and are positioned so high that I cannot comfortably wear many normal tops or swimsuits. I also have permanent nerve damage. I have 0 sensation, and my scarring is uneven and extensive. When I brought my concerns to her, I was told by Karen I would need a revision, which was incredibly upsetting in itself. However, what was even more disheartening was the lack of care or follow-up afterward. The only communication I received from the office consisted of impersonal emails asking me to vote for Dr. Horton for "Best Of" awards or to leave a positive review, rather than any genuine concern for what I was going through. Before writing this, I sought out three separate consultations with other board-certified surgeons. All three confirmed the same thing: the work was poorly done, my breasts were completely botched, and I would require a full revision. I have since had my revision surgery with an amazing surgeon who did the absolute best he could to correct everything Karen had done to me. Unfortunately, much of the damage from my surgery with Karen is irreversible, and I'll forever have to live with a lot of the damage she did to me. Not to mention, Karen did not want to release my surgical records to my new surgeon so he could perform my revision. He had to personally contact her so we could finally get the paperwork. Once the paperwork was provided, we were surprised to see that Karen had self documented a diagnosis of body dysmorphia in my records, despite never having been diagnosed with that condition by a mental health professional. I actually love my body but wanted to make improvements to my breasts after having a child. Do not be swayed by awards, presentation, or the impression given during consultations and pre-operative appointments. I spent over $38k on this surgery with Karen to be absolutely botched. I don't believe she should be practicing at all after what she has done to my body and everything I have heard from many, many other surgeons after they saw my breasts and after my revision surgery as well. I would never want anyone else to go through what I have experienced. Funny enough, I had explant surgery with Dr Horton without reading any of her online reviews first. I went completely on my gut instinct, after meeting with countless other surgeons. I also didn't want to have drains or other complex surgery issues to deal with, and none of that was required. I know every single person is different in how their body is and how it will respond to surgery, but I can say that I got 100% of what I was told I would have. My breasts look amazing! The recovery was so easy that I didn't take pain meds after day 1, and by day 3 I had to remind myself that I had just had surgery. My breasts immediately looked great and healed super fast! I paid $200 for an in-person consultation with Dr. Horton, during which she confirmed that I was a good candidate on the condition I maintained hard workouts for six to twelve months before proceeding. I trusted that and expected a clear, accurate estimate to follow. Instead, the first version of the bill I received was vague. It referenced only "abdomen" and left out the areas Dr. Horton had explicitly discussed, like my inner thighs and pubic region. **BUYER BEWARE** I had a breast lift, replacement of 10-year old implants, and a tummy tuck by Karen Horton. She botched both surgeries egregiously, as follows: - my breasts are now asymmetrical with one sitting visibly higher than the other. (During 6 monthly post-op visits, she assured me that the higher breast would drop, but it never did.); - I asked for a reduction from a D/DD to a full C, which I did not receive (They're still full D's), plus, one breast is misshapen from having an ill-fitting implant; - She did not discuss with me which implants options I had and, as a result, she chose the wrong ones, and now I have unnatural-looking, large breasts; - She botched my nipples--one is larger & completely mis-shaped w/ terrible-looking scars around both. They were also placed too close together & too high, so they look absurd. As a result, I can neither wear any of my bras nor most of my shirts. Plus, keeping my nipples inside a bathing suit is highly stressful & nearly impossible to achieve; - She left me with copious amounts of hard scar tissue. It literally feels as though I have thick rope under my breasts. When I mentioned this to her during a post-op visit, she said, Well, at least it's under your breasts and no one can see it! Plus, scarring from the incisions still looks Frankensteinian, nearly 3-years post-op; - She botched my tummy tuck, as well, leaving me with a visibly off-centered navel with visible scars from the incisions; -The abdominal scar looks horrendous, as well, and despite painful massaging of $300+ worth of recommended scar cream daily for 6-months or more, scarring is still glaringly apparent; - When she lipo'd a bit of fat from a small area of my upper thighs, she literally left gouge marks, which are still visible today. WTF is wrong with you, woman? Was there no scalpel available? Couldn't this have been easily remedied by placing a stitch onto each entry site? What a monumental blunder--cruel, callous and easily avoidable; - As a result of my botched surgery, I am also left with a hernia at the abdominal incision, something discovered during a scan at UCSF. Karen Horton's one plus is her confident, cheerful bedside manner, but don't be fooled. Her skills as a surgeon are highly inconsistent, and her carelessness is unforgivable. So, Dear Prospective Patient, you have been forewarned. Please understand that you are risking quite a lot to entrust her with your precious body. Surgery 6 years ago today, 4/9/18 I underwent Breast Reduction surgery. This was one of the best decision I've made in my entire life. Dr. Karen Horton MD was the Surgeon I chose after a 5 year search. I must say she is the most skilled, compassionate, caring, knowledgeable surgeon with excellent bedside manner that you would ever want to meet. I loved the fact that she explains the entire process to you before your surgery and makes herself available to you at any time after your surgery. I found it funny that Dr. Horton actually interviews her patients as they are interviewing her to make sure they are a good fit. She has actually turned patients away because she didn't feel she was the right surgeon for them after their consultation. What Doctor does that? Dr. Karen Horton that's who. She's definitely not money driven. Dr. Horton went the extra mile to make sure I was ok before the surgery by coming into the room sitting on the bed talking to me and my husband as they were prepping me for my surgery. She was also the first person I saw when I woke up after my surgeon. My surgery went very well. Although I was swollen afterwards I could feel the immediate release of pressure on my neck, back, arm and chest. My healing process was pretty much as she described it would be outside of me trying to rush the process. My breast is the perfect size for me. And YES, the feeling in my breast and nipples came back strong. My breast reduction surgery has proven to be the best thing I could've ever done in my entire adult life and Dr. Karen Horton M.D. was the best choice to be my surgeon. The staff is absolutely amazing, incredible, fantastic, super supportive and helpful I feel like a brand new person. My clothes fit differently and I'm able to wear button up blouses that I can actually button up! I had no ideal how much my large breasts impacted everything I did in my every day life. Now I'm able to do the little things that I wasn't able to do without pain and discomfort. From the smallest things like bending over to pick up something, to the more difficult things like working out, riding a bike, running or just walking. As I affectionately call Dr. Horton my Dr. Shero. I truly appreciate and thank her each and every day. From my day to day dressing to when I'm shopping for clothes that now fit my breast perfectly in my actual size. After extensive research on explant surgery experts from the bay to LA, several interviews(even florida and Tx) We diceded on Dr Horton. She specializes in breast reconstruction and explant surgery. My wife had pretty bad capsular contracture on both breasts for 6 yrs and we were worried about where to go. Dr. Horton was the most experienced and the most affordable of all the places we looked. I am now 2 months post procedure and I can tell you, without a doubt, getting these procedures was one of the best decisions of my life. I had a consult with Dr. Horton recently to go over a few issues I was having. Upon entering the office I was greeted with friendly faces and attitudes that started the appointment off right. My appointment was right on time and Dr. Horton was friendly and accessible. This was my 4th consult with a plastic surgeon over the same issues and it was so much better than the previous experiences I had. I got a fresh perspective as to what each procedure entails as far as recovery time, I appreciated her honesty. Other PS's had quoted me one week of downtime, then back to work with makeup to cover bruises, type of sales pitch. Dr. Horton was honest and said that it takes about a month and that I wouldn't want to be out in public a week after. She encouraged me to really take my time to think about it before committing because it was a huge decision. One of my issues ended ups not being cosmetic, so she referred to a specialist to check to see if it was something I needed addressed immediately. That was eye opening as the other PS's were ready to move ahead with their quick fix over something that could be serious or even life threatening. I got great results of exactly what I wanted, as the looks were very natural for me and I had smooth healing experience. The second time (in ten years) Dr. Horton did the breast implant replacement, which had to be done due to after-Covid effects of misconfiguring one of the implants, and again I had a great experience. I went to see Dr Horton for a breast reduction consultation. I asked Dr Horton up front not to say anything negative about my body as I hadn't decided on surgery yet. During the examination, she provided unsolicited advice on a scar on my stomach, to say I could have liposuction to flatten it out and that it was pretty stretched out. Having just had a baby, I was already aware of that. She was also 30 minutes late and then left for 15 mins part way through to see another patient, so I was pretty stressed as I had a newborn at home who I needed to get back for. After the consultation, I sent an email to explain that I was disconcerted about the unsolicited advice, given my request at the beginning. Dr Horton's assistant, Mary, apologized on her behalf and Dr Horton accidentally cc'd me on her reply to her assistant saying "I think that's perfect, she was so weird" about me. For a doctor to think it's appropriate to send this to a colleague in response to feedback, shows a deep lack of professionalism and real lack of compassion. Isn't appreciating the vulnerability it takes to walk through the door, share your very personal story and be naked before them, a core part of being a cosmetic surgeon? This experience also highlights her utter insincerity, as she was so effusive in the consult, saying how great it was to meet me and that they care about their patients deeply etc. I don't normally leave reviews but felt compelled to let others know that this is how she speaks about her patients and how she handles feedback. This is a review of Nurse Injector Emily and her service. I am extremely pleased. I was looking for someone who had experience using botox for bruxism, and also for correcting filled I had placed in December. After looking at pictures of me in the past with no filler, and good filler, and what I look like today, She gave me her honest impression of what filler needed to be removed and what was better off leaving alone. Very little pain, no bruising, and already looking better. I also met Dr. Horton for a surgical consult and found her personable, thorough, and thoughtful. The all-female staff and stylish, feminine decor was a welcome shift from some other offices I have visited. Everyone was at the top of their game, punctual, knowledgeable, and friendly. I chose to get a breast reduction with Karen Horton in early November 2024, and could not be more grateful to her and her incredible team for the experience I have had, despite having some complications (not due to anything that happened during surgery, but slow healing and an infection 3-4 weeks post-op). I of course wanted a competent, capable surgeon who would give me the results I was looking for, but equally important to me was the overall experience, and I immediately knew I would get that when I chose Karen Horton as my surgeon. She is warm, compassionate, and creates space for her patients, offering reassurance with a frank, open communication style. She starts each appointment with, "What questions do you have for me?" and really cares about her patients, going above and beyond to reach out on weekends and seeing me weekly post-op due to my infection, when she could (and most surgeons would), outsource wound aftercare after a successful surgery. This isn't to say the entire team isn't fantastic- I know I am also always in great hands with Emily. Neelu with the front desk even spent an hour dealing with the pharmacist for me. Dr. Horton and her entire staff are excellent! She recently performed a labiaplasty on me, and thankfully I am healing very fast. Though it feels embarrassing to write about such a procedure, I hope that my positive review will help another woman who chooses to have a labiaplasty with Dr. Horton. I feel physically much more comfortable after the procedure, even though the first two weeks of recovery are rough. Everything Dr. Horton and her team have told me about the procedure and recovery has been spot on. My pelvic pain has significantly improved overall, and I'm so thrilled with the vulva aesthetics that Dr. Horton created as well. I even feel like exercising again! If your labia minora are causing havoc in your life (e.g. pain or simply 'getting in the way') please consider a labiaplasty with Dr. Horton. The recovery isn't easy, but the results are worth it. Lastly, Dr. Horton's bedside manner is the best I have ever experienced! I've been seen by so many doctors and surgeons throughout my life, and I was shocked with how personable and friendly Dr. Horton is. She and her staff made me feel as comfortable as I could during the procedure and with all in-office visits. See if you agree me. This doctor, Karen Horton, charges $200 for a consultation! I realize a lot of people soak up her time and then never choose her as their doctor, BUT,,,,I think that 'comes with the territory' so to speak. As a prospective patient, i lose time too!!! Can i charge all the doctors in my search for the right doctor for all the time i spend interviewing them? Most people don't know this - in large part, the public, or aka the 'taxpayer' pays for a doctor's medical education. My brother, retired now, but who use to be Chief of Staff at The Veteran's Hospital in Sacramento. informed me of this. It is sooo expenses to educate a doctor that there is no way of educating them except to charge the taxpayer! It infuriates my brother 'The Doctor' that after doctors receive their education, they become Cosmetic Surgeons and not Medical Doctors, which are badly needed. So, in other words, thy are in it for the big money and not to help sick people. There you have it!!! Let me give you some sound advice...Give Back! DO complimentary consultations. Your 'stiff charge' is off-putting. You come off as 'money hungry'. If 5 doctors, i interviewed, to find the 'right one' charged me $200 for a consultation, i couldn't afford to have the surgery! i called your office because i wanted to support women. You are a female doctor and if you were fair with your pricing and an 'ARTIST' with your cosmetic skills, my 2 friends and I were going to employ you as our cosmetic surgeon. It might have just been a bad day for your snotty receptionist. I have had those 'bad days' myself. Embarrassed and sorry for the way i treated a customer. I had a great patient experience with Dr. Horton. I originally interviewed 3 doctors in the area, decided the procedure wasn't worth it for me, and let it drop. But what stood out to me was that Dr Horton was very clear about the risks, downside, and long-term practices and maintenance I'd have to commit to; the other two doctors downplayed and minimized this and didn't clearly talk me through the pros and cons. A couple of years later circumstances changed and I decided I wanted the procedure. Again, Dr Horton's office was extremely proactive and responsible about making sure I understood the procedure and options. I had a minor complication during the procedure, and Dr Horton proactively explained and took responsibility for what happened. (It wasn't an issue of negligence or a mistake; I more or less experienced a side effect specific to my physiology.) One year in, I've been very impressed with the professionalism of the office and the quality of the results. I definitely recommend Dr. Horton's practice. read more
