I ordered a cake in advance with Karina. In fact, I texted the reference photo, and called three separate times (first time in October) to speak with them to assure they'd be able to make the cake as we were wanting (we were between bakeries). Each time was a "yes we can do that", "absolutely yes", "super simple", etc etc. The day we ordered I verified they would have no issue with the pink and be able to make the cake exactly (or close to) as the reference photo for the amount of people we invited, which they even wrote "same as photo" on the order sheet. We also specified we were wanting a #2 candle, and for the cake to say "Maya Street" as the reference picture shows. We go to pick up the cake and realize it's not what we ordered at all, as you can see by the reference picture vs what they made us. The cake was a deep red, one tiered, a written #2, and the street name written incorrectly. I was upset because we paid $120+ for this cake just for it to come out the way it did. I spoke directly with Karina who immediately tried faulting me, saying it was what I had ordered as if her staff couldn't have made a mistake. She was claiming that the outcome of the cake was exactly what I ordered because it was on the order sheet. After the second/third time of her saying "it's exactly what you ordered", I got extremely frustrated with her. I even told her had our color scheme (since October) not been pink and orange, we wouldn't have been as upset. She didn't want to take accountability, and provided no apology, nor did she suggest a refund. We had to demand one from her after 15+ minutes on the phone with her. With how expensive the cake was, you'd expect it to be what you order, or at least as close as possible, especially when you're guaranteed it's an easy make. After speaking with multiple people about the frustration, it seems this is a common occurrence when it comes to custom cakes with Karina's. I also felt it was incredibly unprofessional for Karina to post the comment to social media. Extremely disappointed on how she handled this situation. One of my favorite bakeries around. And all the staff are nice and friendly. We come here all the time for a quick snack. Their matchas are delicious. In fact everything is. I especially like the cornbread, not sure exactly what it's called but it's like cornbread and cake combined. Sandwiches are sooo good. We've ordered some custom cakes too, and they turned out amazing. My son was really into Takis at one point, so they made his cake look like Takis were falling out of a bag and onto the cake. I love this Bakery. After going through and vetting out many bakeries around Northwest suburbs of Chicago, I feel I have found one bakery that I will be coming back again and again and again and again.. the reason I say this is their cakes are the best I came up with a concept like how the design would look for my wife's birthday. She was all in. She was excited she was ready to bake the cake for us with practically less than 24 hours of notice. We got vanilla with chocolate mousse filling a three layered cake the cake was moist and made to perfection. The cake Wasn't extremely sweet which was the best part. It was sweet to appoint where you would appreciate.. while waiting for the cake in the store I saw so many different products that she had for sale along with fresh brew, coffee, and sandwiches. I did try the chicken chipotle sandwich, which was again a cold sandwich, but I asked them to toast it for me. And they did it without any hesitation with the tour and the crunchiness. The sandwich was probably one of the good sandwich that I've tried with such amazing flavor coming out with each bite. Also, now I have tried their cakes for the third time hands-down the best cake in town. Also, I would also say there are certain places which don't need referrals recommendations. I really like this bakery, and it has been my number one choice for bread, unfortunately I have to find another spot. I initially ordered just one drink, but I wanted another one since it sounded so delicious. Horchata coffee. When I tasted the coffee off the bat it was very sweet and it did not taste nothing like horchata, I called just to maybe think they could have put a sticker on the wrong drink, but whomever I spoke with told me that she thinks it's just me that doesn't like their horchata and again I've been going there for years and have tasted their horchata and drinks multiple times, so it makes me very sad that they didn't use their customer service skills and blamed the costumer, couldn't even offer (me) to either make my drink again or even offer something because it is a quick way to lose customers. read more

First time trying Karina's! Popped in on Father's Day looking for a dessert to bring to family. I ran in just before close, they had almost nothing left. I noticed some flan and some strawberry cheesecake slices left in the cooler by the cashier and I asked for a few of the strawberry cheesecake slices. I looked around and commented to the lady "wow must have been a busy day'" she said yes it was, so busy today for hours, I said yeah I could tell almost sold out! She rang me up and I went on my way. The inside is super cute, small tables to sit, they have a fancy coffee/espresso machine for nice coffees, will have to come back and check those out! Cute patio outside too! Easy in and out and parking in the back of the building. And most importantly, everyone loved the cheesecake! It was probably some of the best I've had in a long time! This place is da bomb. I love what all they have to offer. Their pastries are delicious and they usually have a great variety on hand. But you have got to go early in the day to get that benefit of doubt. The later you go in the day slim pickings is what you'll find. Karina's has their bakery kitchen in-house which is visible to the customers when you enter the shop. They make a wonderful variety of cakes and cookies too. My family and I usually get assorted Mexican pastries (sweet breads, some kind of savory turnovers, etc.) and assorted cookies from them. They also offer parfaits, puddings, fresh juices, coffee, sandwiches and more. Service is good and prices are very reasonable. If you are ever in the town of Mundelein, then definitely check Karina's out. I highly recommend them. read more

I always loved coming to this bakery, but I am so disappointed with this cake. Cake was bought for my dads birthday. I was not planning on having any writing on it but they asked. However, only if "Feliz Cumpleaños" fits on the small cake. The girl who wrote it didn't even show me, just put in the box. This cake shouldn't be sold and it's sad because even the girl employee knew her writing is terrible and she snickered with her co worker. We were at the Mundelein Bike Race and just happened to walked pass this bakery (they are usually closed on Mondays but was open today for the race) and decided to walked in! So glad I did! I found that their sweet Mexican bread was really good, not dry and tasty! I also got the cheese taco, oh my, that you can taste the butter, very flaky and the cheese had the perfect sweetness! Completely disappointed with my cake. The cake I got was absolutely embarrassing. I always try to support small business in mundelein and have ordered countless cakes from Karina's. I ordered a cake for my mother's surprise 50th party and had a table at the venue to show off the cake. My aunt picked up the cake and texted me a picture I was MORTIFIED!!! I didn't want to stress to much and was hoping it tasted good but it was so DRY. It tasted like cake box mix you get at the grocery store. Not only did I pay $150 for this cake it was NOTHING that I asked for. I got a $40 refund... but I would have made a bigger stink if I knew how dry it was. The white cake is what I asked for the black cake is what I got. Granted I asked for black buttercream but everything else was an ABSOLUTE MESS. We would have loved the cake more if we would have received the baby shower cup cakes that we paid for.. the cake tasted great and all guests loved it but we had to struggle with the fondant bow that we had asked karina to include on the cake.. it was too heavy for the cake and fell off the cake and the cake looked bad without it so we had to put push pins and hold it until we cut the cake. Also, we did not like the bakery cancelling our cup cakes order and not letting us know until we went to pick up the cake 2 hours before the party.. over all we would still be ordering cakes from karina in future but will recommend people checking with the bakery ahead of time and verifying that everything promised would be ready before we start for pickup. read more

The conchas are so soft and have the right sweetness. She makes incredible cakes as well. Each party I have had I've ordered decorative cakes.
