Great local shop. Just so sad they changed the recipe of the best cookie I have ever had in my life. The Death by Chocolate cookie used to have Chocolate chips and a chocolate candy atop the yummy chocolate dough. Now it is just dough. Everything else has been removed, no chips, no candy, and no more trips for me to downtown Everett just to get these cookies. I stopped in out of curiosity on Tuesday. I went back Wednesday with great purpose. The apple fritters are amazing. The five other different types were equally amazing. Needed a place for breakfast in the downtown area of Everett. Jumped on Yelp and found Karl's. Their bread-n-butter is the bakery but they have about 6 breakfast items on the board. The items in the bakery look YUMMM-O. I had the Blueberry pancakes with Ham...tasty and a good value. Lots of hot coffee at the self-serve coffee bar. The decor is funky 70's, it's clean and the morning I was there about 8 other people were in the place. Looks like it's the neighborhood cafe where a bunch of regulars meet for coffee almost every morning. If you're looking for a place to grab breakfast Karl's isn't fancy but it's good. This is a small hidden gem in the area at least to me. I recently discovered this place because I was visiting the Funko HQ next door. Ive passed by this so often but recently went in got some donuts and been hooked since. Mainly for the Cinnamon Bun it is my absolutely place for this. The bun was soft, chewy, sticky and tons of Cream topping. My biggest pet peeves with other places is that I end up running out of the cream or it get hard and fall off before finishing it, but here I didn't have to worry I had tons of Cream long afterward. Also the staffs are very kind and super friendly. It's more of a personal base and you can feel it by the atmosphere and how they treat you. I ate here for the first time and ordered the loaded baked potato soup which was cheesy and delicious. I also got a snickerdoodle to-go and it was very tasty too. The customer service wasn't anything special (not bad either) but my total experience doesn't quite warrant an above average rating. The sweets case has GIANT cinnamon rolls and apple fritters, plus a variety of other (regular sized) cookies and donuts. I saw Karl's had been in business since 1944. They must be doing something right. I called and spoke with Kayla. Bought a cake here just to buy a cake for the lady and didn't realize they were almost closing. Didn't matter to the worker at the time as she didn't mind and told us to take our time. Feeling guilty, I was gonna leave and come back another time but she insisted so we stayed. We didn't have a lot to choose from as it was later in the day, but what was suggested ended up being a great! It was something similar to a snickers cake. Very good! Here's the deal, I can't review them for their actual product which I am sure is fine, but one person is my concern which made me never want to deal with them. I called to get a cake for my son's birthday. Thinking because they were a specialty shop they could complete my request. I asked the gal that answered the phone if they could do a peanut free cake...this was my response "Are you kidding? We are a bakery, we have nuts all over." To that I thought--forget it. Not only was she condescending she was not even helpful. I would think as a longstanding bakery and with the uprising in children allergies they might at least have a referral process for a bakery that is allergy free. Instead the gal said it rudely and implied I was an idiot for even asking... Note to Karls: Gluten, wheat, peanut and other allergies in kids are on the rise. Find a way to adapt-and let your employees know to be kind--perhaps you will have repeat customers. If you had a nicer staff I might have been getting cakes only from you for the next 13-14 years and telling all my friends to as well. read more

I would give them negetive stars if I could. The worst cake I have ever seen. First of all I had asked for a specific design (not too difficult) brought them a picture and specified what I wanted on the order form. I said please call me if you have any questions. Never heard from them. So My daughter picked up the cake for me. The cake was for my boyfriends surprise birthday party. She brings the cake in I open the box to see it and was completely shocked. It looks like a pre-school class did the cake. They used sprayer to put green food coloring on the cake and did a lousy job. There was spray misted down the sides of the cake where it was supposed to be white. The cake had 2-3 inches of frosting. The colors were all wrong and the design was completely incorrect. I called the manager and told him I was dissatisfied. He was rude.....very rude and not apologetic at all. Once we got to the cake.....(since we had no choice and wasted 50.00 on a completely incorrect cake) It was supposed to be carrot cake with cream cheese filling and cream cheese frosting. It was a single layer cake....no filling and it was spice cake not carrot cake at all. I paid extra for carrot cake and was told the cream cheese filling and frosting came standard with this cake. Don't get a cake from this place. My suggestion you can probably get a better cake made by a class of pre-schoolers and let them decorate it too. STAY AWAY from Karls Bakery! read more

I work in a bakery around the corner from Karl's, so I decided to stop in and see how they compare. Based on appearance of the shop, it wasn't very nice looking. It seemed kind of worn out and dirty. I was impressed with their amount of selection and prices of everything. I bought a pumpkin truffle, a turtle cookie, and a red velvet cupcake. It all came out to $5.00 which seemed reasonable. The service wasn't that great because the woman behind the counter didn't even know what flavors everything was and she could have been friendlier. Everything tasted great, although the cream cheese frosting on the cupcake could have been a little less sweet and it probably would have been better without the sugar crystals. Other than that, I was impressed. *also the size of the donuts were incredible! And for an amazing deal. I did not buy one though. We ordered a banana-walnut cake here for my grandmother's birthday. It was supposed to be their "specialty". First of all, they put the cake in a too small box despite us asking for a bigger one, the flowers on the top all got ruined. My experience with Karl's was fantastic. The cake tasting offered a wide array of options from different cake options to filling options. The cake tasting was presented like cupcakes with each topping option in a separate cup. This allowed us to mix and match as we pleased. We were able to provide our own cake decor and design the cake pops. We were able to send reference photos and she was flexible when we adjusted our frosting design. The final product was a moist, flavorful and beautiful cake. The cake pops were a great texture with just enough chocolate on the outside. Karl's exceeded our expectations. We provided the flowers and cake topper to the baker and she made the vision come to life. I would use Karl's again for birthday parties and other special occasions. read more

I was caught in a pinch and needed a birthday cake in 2 hours for 8 people. Karl's Bakery not only had cakes on hand, but 3 flavors to choose from. They stayed open an hour past closing so I could rush over to pick up, and even let me write my own message on the top of the cake! This old fashioned diner and donut joint is what it is. A place to get a cup of coffee, and a donut. Perhaps a bit of diner food. It's got an old time interior that reminds me of long drives to Arizona circa 1975. The prices are still stuck in a previous age, too. The highest priced thing on the cafe menu is fish and chips at $8.99. Everything else hands around the $5 mark. I go there for the donuts, though. They have a nice classic selection, all made fresh. The last time I stopped in and got a cinnamon twist, it was still so warm and soft it melted in my mouth. I love their cream filled donuts, and their maple bars. We make a point of stopping down on Sunday mornings to get a few before we have our friends over for brunch. I went to Karls with & less than 24 hours notice and they made a beautiful cake for us that I picked up the next day. After the birthday dinner the cake was served & several people passed. I had some even though I really don't care for cake and OMG it was the BEST cake I've ever had! Everyone was saying how good it was so the people that originally passed got some too. I used to love this bakery. The cases are now mostly empty and the donuts taste overcooked and dry. I have gone back several times hoping it would be the way it used to be. I also can't get past the woman that works the front counter who is extremely rude to customers. I go to Trinity Lutheran College which sits right next door to Karl's and so every now and then I will grab my coworkers a box of donuts to munch on. My coworkers LOVE them! The donuts are fresh, slightly crispy on the outside, soft and moist on the inside and there's just the right amount of topping on them. Also, if you get the bismark, my personal favorite, there's a lot of filling! As for their cafe, it's Denny's quality. I had eggs, sausage and hash browns there once and wasn't impressed. NEW OWNERS It's come to my attention that Karl's Bakery has new owners. I usually hit the shop at least one a month for donuts or a breakfast sandwich. Mornings are their shining star, as it's basically a cute, old, greasy spoon. Great For: Small groups (four or less), looking for a slow paced breakfast (fast is NOT in their vocabulary, but it's worth the wait). Not great for: Groups that can't fit in a booth, as there is very limited seating. And weekend warriors, I haven't seen them open on the weekends, yet. read more

Having been raised in a poor, factory city I tend to get disappointed when I walk into a bakery and see half bare shelves and display cases. With that said I can tell you that what Karl's seems to lack in volume it more than makes up for in QUALITY and TASTE. The cookie selection was a great start and I loved the German Chocolate cookie. The peanut butter and jelly cookie was surprisingly awesome. It was rich pb cookie covered with jelly. Yum! Then I tried a donut. I only have praise for the cream filled donut I enjoyed. This was no light weight, barely filled, Safeway donut. This hefty offering gave quality and substance in every moist bite. The jelly donuts on display were colorful and appeared generously filled. I am in LOVE with the breakfast meal that includes two eggs (fixed however you like) the best toast I have ever had (I was told it was so good because Karl's makes their own bread) a sausage patty, and a HUGE portion of hash browns. I am 50 years old and one of the things I like best about this breakfast meal is that I can no longer eat the amount of food I could when I was young (my nutritionist told me this was normal) and Karl's gives me just the right amount of each item if you are an older person (considered to be a "Senior" by AARP standards!!
