Dandy little place in a very convenient spot in Everett. I've seen many donut shops tend to neglect seating and coffee but Karl's is pretty dedicated to it which is nice. Got a dozen donuts that were generally very high quality and given notes below. Maple Bar: 5/5 perfect texture and really clear syrup flavor that rarely comes through in maple bars. The best maple bar i've had in the state. Apple Fritter: 2.5/5 for being a prominent part of the store's branding with the whole "giant sized fritters" thing it is okay. Nice crunch and softness without hardness but needed more apples. Raspberry Fritter: 2.5/5 same as above. since neither this or the apple have enough fruit chunks to come through the only difference is that this is sweeter if thats your thing. Chocolate Bar/Donut: 4/5 I dont like chocolate donuts but their frosting has a really rich fudge taste that people who do like this type will appreciate. Likewise good texture to the maple bars Jelly Filled Glazed: 5/5 their glazes are really fine and light which makes them very pleasant to eat and the jelly isn't as sweet as typical Jelly-filleds which means you really taste the berries. If you don't like jelly filled's usually please give these a shot. Classic Glazed: 3/5 nice texture but the light glaze doesn't quite work as well here as on the jellies. Still worth getting if you're doing a full dozen. Homer (or pink sprinkles idk): 2/5 weirdly too sweet somehow. Rare that I don't view a homer as deserving of being in a dozen from a shop but yeah this is a miss. Maple Bacon: 5/5 its still good and the maple bacon is a good combo. Cinnamon Twist: 2/5 ive never had a cinnamon swirl that tasted like cinnamon and this is no different. if these are your thing go for it but theyre not gonna have any more or less flavor than any other cinnamon twist. read more

Ordered a quarter sheet birthday cake and ended up having to change the pick up date, and they were super accommodating. Picked up the cake and it was absolutely beautiful. Asked for specific colors with minimal toppings as we had our own cake topper. Sponge was fresh and fantastic as well as the frosting and custard filling! My family have been coming to Karls bakery for every birthday and Event for the last 8/9 years.. We are constantly blown away by the skill and effort Sheila puts into her cakes. I was downtown Everett running another errand and popped in to get a dozen doughnuts for my coworkers. The man behind the counter was especially kind and and threw in 1 to make a baker's dozen. They seriously make the BEST maple bar I have ever tasted, so light, fluffy and tasty. My coworker agreed whole-heartedly. Whether you're about to hop into line at Funko HQ or leaving it, Karl's is a sweet stop that shouldn't be missed. In fact, leaving Funko HQ I overheard someone raving to her partner that they had to pick up a box of donuts from Karl's before they left town. Intrigued, and always a sucker for a donut, I stepped in to see about the hype. The interior is a nice mix of a bakery and a diner, with a nice variety of donuts and pastries. When I went in, there was even a cake consultation taking place at one of the booths. Donuts average about $2 per, but they're pretty big to make up for it. Paying by card? There may be an added fee if you don't meet the minimum, however they are accepting cash (at first I thought they were cashless, as their credit card system is pretty large). The donuts are a tad oily, so if you're not planning on enjoying right away and didn't get a box: be sure to ask for extra napkins, and be mindful of where you're storing the bag. Street parking is available, just be aware of any signs. Parking enforcement was pretty active, even on a rainy morning, so getting a ticket may be too easy of an achievement to unlock. read more

Walked into the bakery and it wasn't busy at all. There were only two seated customers but saw workers that seemed to be really busy in the back. We were greeted by a gentleman who was packing up food. We waited about 5 minutes until a woman came up to help us. She was not customer friendly, very short with us, she immediately asked how many donuts we wanted and we decided on a half dozen. She packed the donuts very sloppily in the box, kind of pushing the lid down and squishing the donuts. We decided on an extra donut and she seemed annoyed that we asked to have it bagged separately. Got a half dozen + 1 donut: 3 raspberry fritters and 4 Bavarian cream maple bars. The fritters were a little two sweet, had good texture, would have been better warmed. I love old school, indie bake shops, especially if they feature doughnuts! Karl's Bakery and Café is located next door to Funko on Wetmore in downtown Everett. They have been in business since 1944 so definitely they have the goods to prove their staying power. Selected a chocolate raised, lemon bar, and a chocolate Bismarck to go. Paused at the outdoor seating to photograph said items for Yelp. The lemon bar got hoovered by The Homie. Meanwhile the chocolate Bismarck got nibbled and then fully consumed by me. OMG the flavor of the chocolate glaze, texture of the doughnut, and the copious, luscious pastry cream inside. I still think about that doughnut. My goodness, mmmmm that doughnut. The chocolate raised did make it home and into the refrigerator. However, it got demolished the following day by The Homie. Three items...we're morons. A lot of reviews for Karl's Bakery are for the wedding cakes, but I feel like people need to know the greatness of the donuts here. It's ironic that the lightest donuts I've ever had will make me heavier, but the carbs and calories are totally worth it. I bought a dozen assorted donuts (chose 12, all different, for $15 or so). Wish I could include a picture, but it was blurry and I ate them all before I realized it. I don't plan on ever getting married, but I'd imagine the cake from here would be my choice--or maybe I'll just stack two dozen donuts and throw on the bride and groom figurines and call it a wedding cake. read more

Snickerdoodle had a good texture, soft inside with a firm outside. Nice amount of cinnamon sugar. Not a strong eggy snickerdoodle flavor I personally love but a faint taste. Cream filled was a good size and filling amount. Sweet pudding like filling, frosting was sweet but not firm on the outside and quite messy. The best donut shop in Everett I just found! I was here in the way to the farmers market, and found the donuts sign outside of this shop. I was very skeptical at first and didn't know if I would like this place. I only ordered 1 donut when I got rejected for a sample. I like donuts but not all donuts. They need to be fresh and soft. My favorite is general porpoise in Capital hill. After I had a bite and found the donut was so fresh and soft no weird aftertaste. I went for a half dozen and paid extra 8 bucks. It's $2 a donut and $10 for a half dozen. It is a little more than what you'd pay for a donut but it's worth it!! The lady told me if I didn't like it then i can trade for something else. No need!! I just needed more to share with my kids and my hubby. Sure enough, my family all liked the donuts, and now I went to the shop again 2 weeks in a row. If you want fresh soft donuts, come by this shop. Sadly the farmers market won't be back until next spring. But I will come back to this shop for sure when I crave for good donuts. We hit up Funko and then this bakery for a snack en route back to car ( parked in bank parking lot ) After a chaotic Sunday afternoon in Funko and chasing around kiddos , i dont know if it was the magic of the sweets or the calm atmosphere or the cup o coffee but this place was empty and amazing. 3 adults and 2 rowdy kids walking in here felt like i went back in time. Huuuuuge treats and an apple fritter the size of my head. We had cookies and donuts at around 2:00pm and there was still lots to choose from at the counter. I thought it would be limited to choose but we all got something we wanted. M&m cookies , apple juices for kids was a big hit. Restrooms in back as well so we were all set to go back to car refreshed and will def be back next time we're in Everett. read more

I recently needed to order a tiered cake in a hurry for a longtime couple who were planning a wedding under very difficult circumstances. The cake had to feed 50 and also be transportable, plus easy to decorate with flowers for a person who had no idea how to decorate a cake (me). But Sheila at Karl's Bakery came through for us with flying colors. She created a two-tiered cake and a half sheet cake, both of which were gorgeous as well as delicious. In fact, I saw many, many guests going back for seconds and even thirds - and this was AFTER a big lunch! The wedding itself was a joyful, beautiful occasion, in no small part due to the cake that Sheila had made with incredible care and skill. Walked in after visiting Funko and just decided to get a treat while waiting for friends. Upon entry there was a girl standing in the window. She must hate her job and is, because we were looked up and down by her and never greeted. We looked across the small selection and chose a few donuts and a cookie. On a whim we also selected a cinnamon roll. While we waited for service we looked around the shop and it's very run down. The tables and booths were very old. There were dirty tables and dusty tables. The food here doesn't look extremely appetizing. Maybe it's the lighting or the grumpy girl up front. We finally were greeted by a friendly face. He stated he just started working there and he was very excited for us to try the donuts today. He had amazing customer service. Donuts are super soft and light. The frosting on the donuts is extremely sweet and heavy. I couldn't make it past two or three bites before I gave up. It's safe to say I'll never come back. The doughnuts are so moist and delicious, and they always have unique flavors that your "typical" doughnut store doesn't have, like cherry, blueberry, and GIANT apple fritters. They have a new coffee and espresso machine and the coffee is better than its ever been- and it was great before! The customer service is phenomenal. Hope is great when I come in for my morning coffees, and to have a quick gab, and Kayla and Sheila are awesome when I stop by in the afternoons or on weekends to grab doughnuts or goodies. My fiance and I will also be using them for our upcoming wedding to make our wedding pies and other desserts, and we had our first sampling recently and the crust on the pies is SO GOOD. Karl's is an Everett institution. It's old school and it shows. I love it. Bakeries that still just do the classics and nothing fancy is hard to come by. Karl's does just that. Massive, tasty doughnuts. I have not had anything else from here other than doughnuts and coffee. Called in about an hour for some Blue cake pops for my best friend sons special brunch. The gal said it had some red on it and I was okay with it. Great local shop. Just so sad they changed the recipe of the best cookie I have ever had in my life. The Death by Chocolate cookie used to have Chocolate chips and a chocolate candy atop the yummy chocolate dough. Now it is just dough. Everything else has been removed, no chips, no candy, and no more trips for me to downtown Everett just to get these cookies.
