I was so lucky to have this restaurant cater my wedding. Everything from the food, to the staff, to the planning was excellent. Every meeting we had with the owner, Arkady, made me feel like I was being taken care of and was very assuring. They came to our separate venue and handled everything - the cooking, the management of all staff (including the venue staff), and ensured that the timing of everything was up to the standards of our wedding planner. I couldn't be happier with choosing them to cater our wedding. The biggest anxiety I had about food was whether the American side (my husbands) was going to understand the food /cuisine. However, during the wedding everyone RAVED about the food and majority of all courses were eaten up. I myself got to enjoy the leftovers the day after the wedding and can honestly say it's some of the best Russian food I've had. Kashtan is a great little market that specializes in Russian/Eastern European delicacies. It has a cozy, familial vibe that starts with Vicki. Her warm smile makes you feel like she's welcoming you into her home. I intended on stopping by once, as it is a bit of a drive from Westwood. But I've been there three times in the last three weeks. Amazing products and a great way to try authentic Eastern European products and homemade delights. A friend of mine told me about his "caviar purveyor." I gave it a try and was impressed with the small sample of delicious caviar I purchased from the very friendly, Vicki. I told her I needed 4 pounds of caviar for my birthday celebration. Vicki was fair, forthright, and uber friendly. The party was a huge success, and the caviar was the talk of the town. Vicki had the order prepared for me, with 150 delicious blinis/blintzes. We are still enjoying what remains. Unfortunately, people gorged themselves so much on the amazing caviar, leaving them too full to exploit the terrific catered meal that was prepared. I have found my new Caviar purveyor. My girl has had Russian food coming from her native Greece, this was my first time trying real Russian food. We stopped here from an invite of her girlfriends, and I wanted to indulge in some great food. The meats were tender and fresh, and the vegetables with flavorful with Scallop potatoes. A few weeks ago my husband hosted my 40th birthday at Kashtan and I'm still processing what a glorious, fun and emotional night it was. We had the time of our lives and our friends who've never experienced the traditional Russian banquet style dinner and dancing had the best time too. We laughed and danced (and drank) to our hearts content. Arkady was beyond helpful and communicative leading up to the celebration and provided the most delicious birthday cake and spread. We walked into a stunning display of all kinds of traditional Ukrainian and Russian foods that were so nostalgic and some unique dishes I hadn't tried before. He also arranged the most kind and fun DJ ever who played nothing but the best eastern European dance hits from ace of base to Abba and Boney M. The DJ opened the night by inviting my husband and I to the dance floor with a romantic slow dance which really set the tone for a perfect night. Our waiter Vlad was so polite, thoughtful and attentive too. I can't recommend Kashtan enough to host your next gathering. Love this place, both the cozy banquet hall and the deli next door. I had a birthday party here for 10 folks and they accommodated us on a holiday evening and for a reasonable-per person price. The long table was set (overflowing, really) with tasty appetizers we we got there. There was another larger, Russian group celebrating something as well, and our tables ended up dancing together by the end of the evening even though we didn't understand each other. Other reviews that claim this place only caters to Russians seem off base, at least in my experience. Of course I went and had a great experience with the service and the food! Alex helped me with finding what I needed and recommended some delicious things. We were not very hungry but we ate everything what we ordered even the portions are really good size, very generous, and it's impressing that it's super delicious and more important generous portions. Came with a group for a party. I love Uzbekistan and it's VERY hard to find Uzbek cuisine so I was super excited when I found and read up on this place! It was AMAZING: lots of freshly made specialties: kielbasa, smoked meats and fish, apple fritters, battered chicken, borscht, caviar, and cheeses, along with beautiful jars of fruit preserves, chocolates and other specialty items. They also have a full take out menu from their restaurant next door. I highly recommend stopping by and meeting the father/daughter team who run this neighborhood gem. I was always surprised why the Kashtan store is always empty. Last week I was in the neighborhood and bought a few things. My experience: - tongue and tomato salad: tongue tasted very hard, as if it was some other meat, not tongue. - whole fried fish: the fish still had scales on it - veal stew was quite good and tender, but I've found a TOOTH in it. I would have taken it to the store, but I put the stew in my lunch box already, so hard to prove. It was gross! read more

We had a party for 50 people at our house and why cook when you can order catering from Kashtan. Their food was fresh and tasted home made. They were very professional when they came to our house to set up the food. Everything was done efficiently and beautifully. The food was arranged and decorated with orchids and all kinds of flowers. If you are Russian then this place will treat you like royalty. I am not Russian. In fact, I am Chinese, but I went to this restaurant for my Russian BF's Grandfather's 80th birthday. And boy was the dinner spread a very unique experience. I think I ate so much I gained 10lbs! We arrived to dinner and were escorted to the next door dining area (not the little grocery shop). The small dining area was wall-to-wall mirrors with cheesie chandeliers and glittering lights, but it suited the ambiance. The table we sat at was a long table accomodating about 15 people. And when we got there, the table was already LOADED with plates of appetizers. I mean LOADED!!! There was hardly any space for the utensils! Check out the picture I uploaded to see what I mean. The appetizers consisted of Caviar (OMG! YUM!), Smoked Fish, Smoked Meats, Mushroom/Garlic Spread, Crab Meat Spread, Salads, Roasted Bell Pepper Spread, Roasting Potatoes, Marinated Mackerel w/ Onions, entire garlic bulbs that were roasted, Crepes, Breads. And of course bottles of vodka! I totally gorged myself on the caviar. The giant pearls of briny orange salmon roe. Ikra (or ikura in japanese). I think I ate like a pound just on my own! After the appetizer spread, platters of roasted chicken, turkey cutlets, roasted lamb shanks, chicken tenders were brought out one by one. By then I could barely eat anymore because my BF failed to warn me not to eat so much w/ the starters. But it was too late. There was singing and dancing by the restaurants MC/DJ who had a great voice although I couldn't understand a word he sang. During the course of our dinner (which lasted 4 hours) another family of Russians came in to dine, followed by a couple of Asian girls who sat in the corner. If you are an authentic Ruskey and know what you're doing, you can definitely have yourself a good time at this place. read more
