    Moussaka
    Jason F.

I stopped by here a couple of Monday's ago with my wife for lunch. We happened to be out for the morning and so I fired up Yelp looking for a place to eat and we decided on Kassab's. This restaurant is located right on E Carson St in the South side. Whenever we entered the restaurant at shortly before noon, we were the only patrons there. As you would expect then we were promptly greeted and given our choice of tables. The inside of this restaurant had a number of tables, murals on the exposed brick wall, a bar and then a display case for some of their baked goods. For lunch on this day I decided to go with the moussaka while my wife went with the falafel sandwich. Since I had ordered an entree, I got a salad while my wife did not and that came out first. It consisted of some heavily dressed lettuce and then a couple of slices of both tomatoes and cucumbers. The dressing had a slight mint flavor which I enjoyed and was refreshing on the salad. I also enjoyed how heavily dressed it was but can imagine others who would not. Once I had finished with the salad the rest of our food came out. My moussaka ended up being decent and I really enjoyed the bechamel on the top. Then while I liked both the meat and eggplant, I wish that there had been a bit of a thicker layer of each as most of the moussaka ended up being bechamel and potato. My wife enjoyed her falafel pita with her favorite part being the crunchy falafel. The bottom line for me is that I would head back here again in the future. It has been a long time since I have had moussaka and so it definitely hit the spot for me and I would be interested in trying more of their food in the future.

What a gem! If I had my ukulele I would play a sweet song called "Yalla!" It's obviously a love song bc I love this place. Great service. Heavenly food! Exceedingly fresh and flavorful beyond words. I did all vegetarian... (but they have a plentiful meat selection) Mezza platter ! Huge! Spinach pie! Hot and fresh (not frozen malarkey) Dolma was such heaven, I wanted to sing a song! Something with Fairuz, of course. Pitas & fatoush (salad) Everything was delicious and delightful. I adore the painted mural of the Lebanese couple... and the lady is making Man'oushe with Zataar. What a charming place !

We went for a late lunch and it was a good experience. I liked the color coded menu that made it easy to find vegetarian options if you needed them. It was very tasty and they had good service.

The artwork on the walls in this place is just stunning... Although it's a bit dark and dingy, the staff is very warm and welcoming. You will be treated like family from the moment you enter till the moment you leave. And the food... Come for the spanakopita and stay for the Gyro... Both absolutely enormous and incredible. Probably the most authentic gyro I've ever eaten, and yes, it was the size of my head... if you love, good Mediterranean food, and are in the south side of Pittsburgh, do not miss this place!

Had a fabulous lunch at Kassabs in the south side! We started with a mezza platter and grape leaves. The hummus was exceptional, very creamy and homemade flavor! The grape leaves were also delicious but I wish there was more meat inside! For our entrees we got salads- one house salad with filet and one fatoosh salad with chicken. Both were so good- the filet was done perfect on the house salad but I wish I would have gotten it on the fatoosh salad- the dressing on that one was just perfect, lemon and olive oil. All in all I would return for that fatoosh salad with chicken or steak, and for the great service.

My boyfriend and I tried Kassab's for the first time this weekend and were so pleasantly surprised! When we walked in the restaurant was empty, but pretty small. We were seated right away and the waiter was very attentive and polite. They do have alcoholic drinks as well but we went for lunch so we didn't get any. I ordered the Chicken Shawarma and my boyfriend got the Filet Kabob. I was amazed with the flavors in my Chicken Shawarma. It was so delicious and also ginormous! I tried my boyfriends Filet and it was tasty too. I will definitely be going back! If you've never had Lebanese food and want to try something new you should definitely stop in.

The most delicious lentil soup I've ever had. Highly recommend. The prices are amazing and the service is great. I liked the bar area.

To be honest, it was average. Maybe a little disappointing. This place is on the more expensive side when compared to other Mediterranean places, so I expected the quality to be quite high. It was not, sadly. I tried their rice pudding, meat pie, gyro sauce, and meat skewers. The meat pie was decent. I got delivery, so the condensation from it being hot did detract from the texture. But even with that aside, it wasn't very good. It was oddly sweet. The meat was dry and crumbly. I honestly would not recommend. The skewers were pretty good. You can't really go wrong with this sort of meat (actually, yes you can, if it's under or over cooked. But it was well cooked here). A bit on the costly side for the portion, but not terrible. Came with some vegetables as well, but not much else. I had to add the gyro sauce to get anything to dip my meat in. Nothing was included (while most places do include sauce with the meat). It's good quality sauce. Creamy and delicious, in a small container that costs just 75 cents so not too bad. The rice pudding was really good. It's anything I would want in a rice pudding: creamy, lightly sweet, and a good portion. You can still feel the rice kernels; it's well cooked with a good texture. And the price wasn't bad either. I would say this best menu item that I tried. All in all, I was somewhat disappointed with Kassabs. I was thinking of bringing guests into the restaurant, but after the experience, I'm probably not going to. It's not bad but just underwhelming. Better places in Pittsburgh for Mediterranean food. If you do come, get rice pudding as a dessert and load up on sauce.

I only have good things to say about this place, and I know all of my reviews are of me ordering the lamb shank, but this meal at Kassab's is so good that I can't NOT order it! I bring all of my friends and family that come in from out of town to show them one of the better places to eat in pittsburgh! I also love the fact that it's a family owned restaurant!!

Creamy flavorful hummus that pairs well with their pitas.

It's got a nice location on the central road in Squirrel Hill, but it's a bit hard to find parking. When I got there, I got to try their shish tawouk (chicken kabob), mujadara, salad with feta, and iced mint tea. The tea was pretty alright. Refreshing and a nice mint flavor; I think they might make the blend in house. They also brought out some nice pita before we started the meal. For my main course, I ordered the shish tawouk. You usually get this meal with the rice pilaf, but they were out, so I got to try the mujadara. I'm actually quite glad! The chicken was tender, and the portion was very fair. They served it with a nice tomato sauce, but I also asked for some garlic sauce on the side. The sauces both seem to be homemade, and definitely go well with the chicken. The mujadara was surprisingly delicious. They top the dish with crispy sweet onions. It's a mix of lentils and some other grain. Very good! One thing to mention generally is this place closes quite early, usually around 8 or 8:30 PM, so do keep it in mind. It is also very clearly a family endeavor, with the mom managing most of the tables and the kids always helping out. Very nice place!

The falafel balls weren't that big, but I loved the crunch and flavor. The hummus was really good & creamy. I loved the bits of red onion & cucumber. I added Kalamata olives when I got home. I also tried their babaghanoush and it was good -- a bit smokey and still slightly chunky (small bits of eggplant). There were 2 giant pitas to dip with. More than enough. There's no real eat-in dining to speak of --- though there's a handful of stools along the wall at a wall-mounted counter. I needed to take my meal to-go, but I definitely will be back and dine on that cute outdoor patio! Great meal.

Their website says, "It's not just food, it's hospitality." Unfortunately, the hospitality was missing during our visit. We were greeted with more of a "what do you want?" attitude than a warm welcome. The menu is fairly brief, but it took us a minute to decide what each of us wanted so we could try a few different things. There was no one behind us waiting, so a little patience and grace would have gone a long way. I ordered the Chicken Shawarma & Hummus Bowl, and my husband got the Falafel & Rice Bowl. Both were fresh and nicely prepared, but we felt they were lacking in flavor. Unfortunately, the food seemed to have about as much personality as the service. That said, I've heard a lot of great things about Pita My Shawarma from friends, so I'm not writing them off just yet. Maybe it was simply a late-night Saturday visit and we caught them at the wrong time. I'll give them another shot....perhaps during lunch or a little farther away from closing time. Fresh food, but our first experience was underwhelming.....both in flavor and hospitality.
