Honestly a solid brunch spot on Haight! We had just left Dogfest at Duboce Park and figured we would grab lunch on Haight. While I am absolutely partial to Berliner Berliner, my girlfriend isn't a sausage fan (but we did see they burgers), and decided to walk a bit further to see our options. When coming to Kate's, which was packed, we took a look at the menu and decided on it. While they have physical and digital menus, I also recommend taking a look at the big board offering specials. We both saw "cornmeal buttermilk pancakes" and decided we had to split those. The menu itself offers California ingredients and mentality with items from across the country, truly matching the giant United States mural on the wall - items like biscuits and gravy, hushpuppies, New England Flannel Hash, French Toast Orgry, and Texas fries. With the starter pancakes topped with blueberries was a definite, and my girlfriend decided on her New England Flannel Hash, which is their corned beef hash, I was the difficult decider, caught between the rib eye steak sandwich and crab sandwich. Our great server immediately said "you're getting the steak sandwich." Cornmeal Buttermilk Pancakes (short stack) - I mean, all of that sounds amazing! With the cornmeal, the consistency is more gritty (a la grits), but the buttermilk flavor comes in. We make sure to butter and soak these and try not to kill them as we had actual meals coming. New England Flannel Hash - Kate's take on "THE ABSOLUTE BEST CORNED BEEF HASH IN TOWN! A plate full of corned beef chunks, home fries, topped with two eggs, and she got an english muffin for toast. This was a big plate, and she took about half home for leftovers. Special Rib-Eye Steak Sandwich - On a poppy seed roll, what I really thought interesting is they toast the cheese on top, giving it a slightly fried on top but gooey underneath, which worked great with plentiful rib-eye. This is one of the best spots in Lower Haight. Everything I've tried here has been amazing and it's just a very cute neighborhood spot. My husband and I went to Kate's for breakfast while visiting SF. We saw their menu online and decided to pop in. Cute spot, great menu and a huge specials board. I tried the veggie omelet special. So glad I did, it was delicious!! One of the best I've ever had. The home fries were perfectly cooked. I said no to the biscuit, that was a mistake. My husband got one with his breakfast and shared with me thank god! It was to die for. Everything is house made even the jelly. The only negative thing, if you can call it that, was our server took our order and she never showed up until we were ready for our bill. I feel bad leaving this review since I've lived this place whenever I've gone in to visit. Today I ordered delivery from them for the first time, and while it came very fast, everything was burned. Burned potatoes, burned bacon, burned sausage, and overcooked dry pancakes. The only thing good was the scrambled egg. A few of the potatoes weren't burnt, but most of them were black, and the onions or peppers or whatever they used to be were just bits of char. Oh boy. Let me start by saying the hash browns with cheese and eggs were cooked to perfection. And the coffee is excellent. My sever was also a delight. Unfortunately, this was not a reflection of the owner. Right away he asked me to step outside when there were 3 open tables and no one waiting. He came by to the table next to me 5 times so polite and asking if they were ok, if they needed anything and ignored me every time while both my water and coffee were empty. I can get how a server with sections could perhaps do this. For an owner to do is inexcusable. Then after I asked for my check, he informed me that my server was eating because she didn't have time to eat earlier and she would get to me when she was done. Like wow man. I literally laughed when he said that out of shock. As the table next to me had left, he began stacking the chairs and tables within 2 feet (because they were no longer taking anymore walk-ins) slamming them and saying sorry as if he had no control. I was still eating. After this, he rushed outside to give me the tablet to pay. As soon as I paid, he told me "now we're closed so you can take your things and go" (as in my backpack that was next to me). The restaurant was still full both inside and the parklet aside from the one table next to me that had left. The other side of the parklet was still in full open mode. The service was great yet laid back as there were no other customers as we finished our meal. In studying the menu, the cuisine seemed more southern style cooking than northeastern cuisine. Quaint, homey, low key, neighborhood breakfast joint on eastern Haight St. Tables are sort of crammed together because the place is small. The staff is very friendly. They have daily specials on the chalkboard. I tried the corned beef hash which came with chunks of real corned beef, chunks of roasted potatoes, 2 slices bread, 2 eggs. The small glass of fresh squeeze OJ was delicious. The food was good and not overly salty. Hubby had the Eggs sausage Benedict and said it was good. We added an order of hush puppies (6 per order). Kate's is a neighborhood institution. Be sure to check the specials board for this week's Meat Omelette, Veggie Scramble, and Aggie Sandwich. Portion sizes are generous, and service is friendly. At peak times on the weekend, you may have to wait a bit, and perhaps a bit longer if your party is more than 4. To avoid a wait, arrive early (i.e. before 10). During the week, seating is generally not a problem. While there are lunch items on the menu, somehow I've never gotten around to trying them. I've been too busy eating their wonderfully chunky corned beef hash, cornmeal pancakes (with real maple syrup), and egg dishes. CAVEAT: Finding a legal parking space in the Lower Haight will make you feel like you've won the lottery. It can be that difficult. But Muni service is frequent (lines 6, 7, and 22 stop at Haight/Fillmore) and there's always a taxi or rideshare, either of which is cheaper than a parking ticket. read more

First of all the customer service is always so welcoming and accommodating, they genuinely value providing the best experience possible for you. Let me preface this with I only write reviews for exceptionally good or poor performance. Unfortunately, this place is the latter, we had a horrible experience. The food is mediocre at best and poorly prepared. I had eggs, sausage, potatoes and toast, my wife had one pancake, my son had corned beef hash. My over easy eggs were over hard with both yokes pierced. My wife's pancake was chewy, almost inedible and my son's meal had carrots in it with ordinary corned beef. The service was as bad as it gets. We placed our order at10:03 and 4 tables that came in behind us, 3person, 2 two person and 1 person, were all served before us and 2 tables were finished before we got food. Their excuse when I pointed this out, "we're understaffed". Really, how is that 8 people who came in after us got served before us? Their response, "enjoy your day". We didn't get out of the restaurant until after 11, I guess eggs, hash, and a pancake were too challenging for their kitchen! I would avoid this place at all costs. Standard brunch spot. I got the Mindy's Hash Browns per a friend's recommendation. It is hash browns folded with scrambled eggs, bacon and cheddar. It also comes with some toast or a biscuit on the side. The cheese really elevated the hash browns, but honestly the dish tasted a lot like grease and there were pools of oil at the bottom. My boyfriend and I came a bit before the brunch rush (~9:45) on a Sunday morning and were able to sit right away. He lives around the corner and has been coming here for years, so he recommended a few things and we ended up splitting a savory and a sweet dish, as well as some coffees. We ordered Mindy's hash browns and the French toast orgy. The hash browns were thin and crispy and was perfect with the eggs, cheddar, and bacon. We also picked a biscuit as the choice of bread, and this is the way to go! The biscuit is also savory - cheese and green onion - and was delicious with a little butter. As for the french toast orgy, wow. There were 4 smaller sized pieces of what seemed to be texas toast, covered with greek yogurt, all sorts of fruit, and granola. We each had a piece and I took the rest home for leftovers. Would definitely recommend, although there were a lot of other french toast specials on the chalkboard that looked good also. The coffee was good too- the waitresses come around to refill with one of the classic diner coffee pots. As for overall experience, this is a great place to go for a casual brunch. The portion sizes are great and the prices are very fair for SF. There are a lot of tables in close proximity to each other, and it can get pretty loud.
