Just read my last review in 2022, sadly not much has changed IMO. Grateful they have been able to keep their prices somewhat reasonable. Petty impersonal service. Ordered the Roast Chicken Club, not toasted with a "side of mayo" and house potatoes. Even though it says "fries" on the menu, they don't have fries. Same issue in 2022. Sandwich arrived, "all the mayo" was on the side, so it was dry. Had to order more mayo. Needed a fair amount of salt and pepper as it was quite bland. Though the chicken was a breast and quite plentiful, spilling over the bread. Once again, taters were inedible and I wasn't the only one who left them on my plate. Never saw my server again until I waved her down for my receipt. This is going to be my last trip here, sadly. Glad a few folks think it's great though. read more

Paid by credit card And we left a $3 cash tip on about a $19 to go order and guess what ...later that night we realize that they had charged an additional $5 tip! I am not a regular; but, I could be if it were closer. The food was excellent; yet, I couldn't eat corn meal pancakes regularly. Although the whole experience brought me back to Louisiana, Baton Rouge eating at my great grandmother's farm. It was one of my mother's favourite places. I can still remember chickens, ducks and other animals. The experience in this restaurant was uncanny. What was the kicker, though, is that they make their own sausages. I don't eat breakfast sausage any longer but I could eat theirs every morning. Also, the service was excellent like most good restaurants in New Orleans. The experience brought back memories. Stopped by for eggs bennie and an OJ. They had no canadian bacon but the "homemade sausage" was pushed, so I said sure. Result was.. ugh I was starving so I ate it and have spent all day wishing I hadn't. Sauce wasn't anything close to Hollandaise IDK what it was but it was like half and half; milky, watery and flavorless. The sausage was.. I guess they deep fried it? It was soaking in grease and it ran down into the lower bun saturated it.. and it tasted like .. not new grease. The hash browns were spider thin and tasted also deep fried in the same grease. The OJ was fine. Total: just under $39(!) for literally that. I now remember why the server plonked down the credit card unit and immediately flipped through to the tip page "leave something for the kitchen" he said before I had a chance to read anything. Looking at the menu prices now I can only have got stung for a built-in tip plus an extra tip for it to be $38. I felt gouged and slightly queasy. I love this place so much, we came back with friends. I had the New England Flannel Hash (corned beef hash) again because it was so good last time, and it did not disappoint. My friend had the banana nut pancakes, and they were the size of the plate and did not skimp on bananas or nuts. Another friend had the Shakshuka with chicken and said it was delicious. Service is fast, and the food comes out hot. If you are in need of breakfast, would definitely recommend Kate's Kitchen. read more

Dined as a party of 3 for Sunday breakfast recently, but have been going here for years when I lived nearby. It's a quirky restaurant (you'll have to go through the kitchen to use the restroom) with a large mural of the United States. Aside from the printed menu, make sure to check the boards above the counter for seasonal or daily specials. Service was friendly and attentive. We went here for Sunday brunch, and were seated in less than 10 minutes. The server Melody was super friendly and was prompt at serving us. We ordered strawberry banana and lemon curd pancakes, vegetable scramble, a side of bacon and shakshuka. Everything was delicious and even the coffee was great. Not the water down diner kind!! The place is very homey and cozy. A little tight on space but the food is delicious. The service was also very friendly and we enjoyed the experience. Only small complaint is the bathroom. I've been going to Kate's Kitchen since late 90's. I was always a big fan. After Covid, I noticed the quality and quantity had decreased, but that was to be expected. I was happy that they survived post-Covid downturn, while many small businesses did not. However, last time we were there, I wanted to give the owner some friendly advise, which was to take the word "thick-sliced" bacon off of the menu as the bacon was no longer thick-sliced. I told him it was still good, but I knew that he might save himself some grief over customer complaints, just by removing that word from the menu. Instead, the owner went on a loud tirade about how "he doesn't need us" and he is retiring in 2 years. Very disappointing, and I will never go back. read more

Where do I start? Been here once a couple of years ago and did not return until today. The first time it was unmemorable and seemed a bit over priced. Fast-forward to today when I was craving a diner style breakfast and ordered their most basic and signature dish the Farmer's Breakfast. The hashbrowns were ordered crispy and ended up being oily to the point where my mouth was full of oil after one bite, this was not edible. The sausage tasted off and was charred weirdly, did not take more that two bites. Even the toast tasted awful like onions and bleach. The only decent thing was the eggs and OJ. I was charged $26 basically for the egg I ate bc everything else was not edible to me. Not once was asked if the meal tasted okay in fact the waiter sat down and ate while I was eating as well -he must be use to that crap they serve there, a complete waste of time and money - will never eat there again! Not sure how this place is still open must be all the yuppies in the neighborhood use to eating what this place calls food. Steer clear. read more

Best brunch ever! I first came here while pregnant and immediately fell in love with the food and service. Now, even after having my baby, my husband and I continue to come back, and it never disappoints. I'm especially grateful to the manager, Hasan. Today, we initially chose to sit outside because there wasn't much space inside, and we had our baby in the stroller. Noticing this, Hasan kindly asked if we preferred sitting indoors and made space for us at a cozy table where we felt completely comfortable. A friend of mine suggested this place as her family has been going since her mom was younger, and glad to say it didn't disappoint. Seating can be tricky but they have a waitlist to jot your name down, just stay around and they move fast. No frills, homey joint with fast service as soon as you place the order. Faves: Mollys hash is hands down the best hash, they somehow made every single thin potato shred crispy! Biscuit is a bit dry but they have a homemade jam that you can request to have. Their coffee is ok but they come around for unlimited refills. Not so great: bathroom is past the kitchen so you walk through and get a front row seat of your breakfast being cooked. Not sure it's sanitary but I was so confused at first. Overall a solid, affordable brunch spot and I would come back to try more of their menu! read more

He come to this little restaurant from time to time. The food is always good. Nice portions and a cute place to eat them. They have outdoor seating, but we've never sat outside. Every time we come we've had very friendly and solidly good service. They have good mimosas. We usually get them. I'm pretty darn sure that they use fresh squeezed juice. You can taste the freshness. My wife loves the Flanched Farney Garney. It's an egg and cheese sandwich on a roll. It's a great sandwich. But sometimes they have awesome rolls and sometimes the roll is just ok. I like the breakfast burrito a lot. I add chicken apple sausage to it. It's a big burrito. Plenty to share. This week we shared a pumpkin pancake. It was good. But a little too much backing soda taste. It didn't ruin it. But I thought it was worth mentioning. It's a very cozy place with a great staff and a very good value for SF. I recommend stopping in. Got the big guys breakfast plus a side of biscuit and gravy (I was expecting just one biscuit). Over easy eggs were perfect. Potatoes were really good. Bacon was cooked more than I like (crispy...I like it a bit more chewy). I was initially excited at the site of the large hand formed sausage patty. But it was a bit of a let down. Didn't really taste like classic pork breakfast sausage. Now I'm wondering if it was turkey or something thing? I mean it wasn't terrible and I ate it all...just a bit of a let down. That probably also explains why the sausage gravy was just "okay". It was indeed homemade as it claims in the menu and as the server confirmed when I grilled her on it lol. But it just didn't have great classic homemade sausage gravy flavor. The biscuits...they were more like English muffins, or sourdough bread. Just odd. I would've all them biscuits at all. So...they were def the biggest let down. I ate only 3/4 of one half of one biscuit. The cornmeal buttermilk pancakes were the star of the show. I live a cornmeal pancake and these were good. Next time I'll ask for them without the powdered sugar and more syrup. But I made do....using a bit of the loose jam that came with the biscuits after the syrup was pretty much used up. Didn't order coffee...I'm a dark roast black coffee snob...so I'm just so done trying diner coffee. But...I have to say, the table next to me had it and it looked and smelled good. Really strong. The eggs are cooked to the more overcooked end of the spectrum (think browned egg bottom), and I realized I'm not a big fan of mushrooms and zucchini in my egg. I visited the bathroom while eating at this restaurant, and had to pass through the kitchen. I saw a cook shaping a patty of raw meat with his hands, then touching other food items in the kitchen. I also saw someone touching raw eggs with their hands. There was food waste lying on the floor of the kitchen. Owner was extremely rude when I asked him about the situation. When I asked him to show the food safety score, he couldn't produce one and there wasn't anything posted anywhere inside or outside the store [Update]: Owner is claiming I asked for a free meal. This is incorrect, we paid for the meal and never asked for free food. I work in the tech industry and I don't go about food establishments asking for a free $40 brunch. We were just appalled by the situation and wanted to know if the food is safe. read more

I'm so happy I found Kate's Kitchen to quell my desire for a good old-fashioned Texas breakfast of biscuits and gravy with a side of coffee (which was only $2.50, might I add). The biscuits were a bit dry and overdone (but still tasty) and the gravy was *chefs kiss*. My friend ordered the Shakshuka and couldn't stop raving about it on our walk out. The staff were very friendly and sat us right away, and they checked in with us multiple times throughout our meal, offering refills for coffee and clearing empty plates swiftly. My friends live around the corner and we had a cute sleepover so popped in on a Monday for some brunch. It was super busy! The owner was really nice and noticed how uncomfortable we were at a tiny corner table and told us reassuringly that he'd move us once a different spot opened up. He did! THIS FRIED CHICKEN SANDWICH WAS DELICIOUS. So crunch. So flavor. The bread was soft. The taters were good. The coffee was just okay but I drank it up. When reseated, my friend asked if the owner made the table himself and we were told a cute story of him finding driftwood, wanting to make it a table, not knowing how, and then A CUSTOMER MADE IT FOR HIM! Quintessential Lower Haight breakfast/lunch joint. I do happen to live across the street, but Kate's Kitchen and the owner embody what a Lower Haight eatery should be: filling, tasty, no frills, and very reasonably priced. What makes Kate's standout from the rest of the neighborhood is the quality of the ingredients used in the food, with two big standouts to me being the eggs and the chicken breast. He manages to keep prices low while doing this, having really only raised them once during the pandemic after a bunch of people kept saying he should. It can get busy on weekends especially after 10:30, but they have the flow down to a science and can turn tables very fast. If you're looking for fancy Instagram-y brunch while being treated like a special rich tech person, go hang out in the Marina. If you want good food with that Lower Haight touch, come say hi, I might have my dog with me outside. read more
