pancakes

I've passed by this fun looking, well-lit diner so many times and it never worked out (time-wise, hunger-wise) until now. I thought it was fine. It's one of the few restaurants in the city that is truly open late. After we were seated, the service was warm and friendly - I remember the lady being especially nice. On the way to the bathroom which was down few steps, it was cool to pass a small random corner where a guy was forming huge balls of raw beef for burgers. We only tried a couple items, and I would recommend sticking to basics like pancakes.

Original. Iconic. Comfy food. Excited to dine here for the first time while visiting SF! Service is on point. Staff is always quietly checking up on us and clearing unused items which is so thoughtful especially when someone at the table is in the middle of a story - so grateful! The ambiance is unpretentious, vibrant and welcoming. I look forward to dining here again when we return! Scroll through our meals in the photos attached and send some love Thank you Orphan Andy's for a memorable 5 star experience!

Chicken - Fried Steak & 2 Eggs

Delicious, friendly, cozy, and welcoming. I've eaten here before, but it has been years. I had the chicken fried steak and it was cooked to perfection. The gravy had a fantastic seasoning and the chicken was delicious. I can't remember the name of the guy that took care of me, but he was friendly, personable, and knew the menu. I do have a picture of of the meal, but sadly I forgot to take a picture before I started eating.

We came here as a family. We couldn't sit together, so we just split up in the same area and had breakfast. Everything was pretty darn tasty, and the service couldn't have been better. It is just a very unique place, it's covered with blinking lights and is so colorful. It's one of the oldest gay bars in the Castro. My brother-in-law is gay, and he wanted to come, and we all had a wonderful time, and the people who work there were so sweet and kind. Well, we couldn't ask for more, and if you're in the area, you should stop by. Cheers, my friends and SYOY 02/01/26

We had the Chicken Fried steak and the steak and eggs with a side of gravy. Everything was amazing. The service is perfect. Everything was cooked perfectly, had a great time and will go back

Stuffed French Toast $20 plate definitely over priced and was a 6/10. It was good but not $20 good.

Got the stuffed french toast and it was $20 for only this. It was good but not $20 good sorry. Staff where nice and place was cute but a little on the expensive side for what it is. Tasted like canned apples and basic french toast.

I went to Orphan Andy's for the first time yesterday and loved it so much. The decor was so bright and festive and the interior itself gave off a warm, cozy vibe. I truly believe it's the perfect spot if you're looking to get into the Christmas spirit. Overall, I felt like the customer service was great. The servers were very attentive and would stop by a few times to make sure we had enough tea/coffee. They were sweet and friendly which made us feel very comfortable. As for the food, I got a jalapeño burger w/ grilled onions and a side of onion rings. The portion size was pretty decent and the burger itself was delicious. I thought it was cooked very well and I could've ate another one, but I would've definitely entered a food coma.

a little expensive for what it was ($20+ per item). we asked for sour dough bread but it tasted more like whole wheat bread. a very average diner that's open 24/7 which is nice. service was quick, i liked how they cut up the sandwich in 4 separate portions, and our waiter was very personable. decent place if youre looking for a quick diner meal. definitely lots of things to look at while youre eating, could be overstimulating for some.

This San Francisco institution for a late night after drinking in the wee hours is better and better as the years roll by. From living here years ago as a young guy to my quarterly visits from the U.K., Orphan Andy's has been a haunt of some sort for the last 30+ years. The late night country fried steak and eggs with pancakes and maple syrup gets better and better. The staff are just lovely, some of whom I recognise, and vice versa, from a bygone era. Orphan Andy's is a fond memory for me and for my sister, and I hope this brilliant landmark continues to reign for many years to come.

Classic SF diner experience. The interior was so cute I felt like I was in a retro movie scene. The server was nice and the cake was good. We got the sour cream chocolate cake topped with ice cream. A simply nostalgic feel all around. I have passed by this place so many times and I appreciate the ever changing decorations that never lack in bring whimsical.

I love dining there! I go there first. I do keto, so I usually get the steak or chops as sides.

Ask the Community - Orphan Andy's

Will you be open on Thanksgiving?

I don't believe they are. I called 2023 and they were not. However, check a few days before.

Do I need a reservation?

Nope

Hi, where can I park?

Metered parking or you can try your luck a few blocks into the neighborhood for free 2 hour parking

Do they serve breakfast all day?

Breakfast is served at all hours. Some dinner choices are only available from 4-10 pm. But if you can tolerate potato salad or fries instead of mashed potatoes with your steak or pork chops, you can have dinner in the morning.

Such a beautiful space! Really helps make the dining experience feel special…read more Excellent apps and mains. Maybe best beef tartare I've ever had. Solid Caesar with real anchovies, not overdressed. Roasted prime beef and verlasso salmon were incredibly tender but what really knocked it outta the park was the seasoning and veg sides - the ponzu braised cabbage under the salmon, the hen of the woods and potato puree under the beef. Didn't get the fried chicken this time but it's incredible. Burrata whipped potatoes haricot verts, chocolate cupcake, and Madelines were solid. Assume options off the event menu are better. The croutons a little stale in the salad and the cupcake frosting tasting artificial were my only notes.

The 2nd visit the service was impeccable, everything went exactly as we had hoped. We will be back. We can recommend the scallops and the Salmon, the chicken was very tasty. Also, for the food, I recommend the dips and the fresh pitas, so good. We'll be back just for that. Reminds me of the old Berkeley restaurant years ago, Holy Land (IYKYK). Mmmm. Thanks!

The sandwich comes with a small dressed salad and three tomato halves. It was nice. The potatoes served with the sandwich were roasted but served cold and dry. Like they were left over from the night before. Randy enjoyed his mocha. We shared a very dry, flavorless except for the two small bits of jam in them, "cheese" danish. Definitely skip this $7 item that you could get at a circle k for $1.50 and it would taste fresher. You order when you walk in and someone delivers your order and then you're left to fend for yourself. We were able to locate some ketchup for the potatoes on our own. Nobody ever checked on us. This is the second place on this visit that's charging an extra 5% fee so that their employees can have a living wage and health insurance, which absolutely, every employee should have. With the prices they charge, they should already be able to do that, though. I read an article about this fee with many different names and I would rather pay a bit higher of a price and know the employees were taken care of than be surprised by this fee later. Two sandwich breakfasts, a mocha and a danish on top of tax and their healthy sf fee was $63. Steep for the quality we got. Won't be back.

Loud, lively ambiance, warm from the open kitchen and gas lanterns lining the wall. Beautiful interior, with several tall trees in the center under the high peaked ceiling. Complimentary thin house tortilla chips and tasty slightly spicy roasted salsa. Delicious. Housemade tamale side was delicious, and I'd definitely get again. Esquites (street corn) was fresh off the cob which was nice, however it was in a soup of too much mayo--pass. Ceviche and octopus appetizers were delicious, and go well with the complimentary tortilla chips (I prefer thin over the thicker accompanying chips). Short rib was tender in a tasty mojo sauce and comes with warm tortillas so you can make your own little tacos. I still preferred the tamale though. Agua fresca good and horchata fresh, however definitely smaller than what you may be used to. Overall good visit. Will be back when we're in the mood for this type of Mexican food. Though having grown up in SoCal, college in SD, worked a bit in East LA...I generally prefer hole in the wall comfort Mexican food.

They thoughtfully removed the fish sauce from her dishes. I had an excellent Thai iced tea and picked at a too-sweet Pad Thai. It was sticky and the ingredients lost in the tamarind sauce. I've had it prepared this way at other Thai spots; it's not my preference. Service was kind, not intrusive. My friend and I were deep in discussion so she checked on us then left us to talk which was perceptive. I'd go back to try more of their menu including a curry dish and Tom Kha soup. Try not to sit at the tables in the path of the door: A gust of cold wind blows in and the door's automatic- Arctic chill! I hope they adjust that. I wasn't able to edit the reservation to reflect the change in number. We arrived at the restaurant at 12:17 PM and let our hostess know that we were now a party of 5. She was OK with that and asked us to give her time to set up the table to accommodate a member of our party who was in a wheelchair. There is a push button to operate the door should you require it. Our hostess brought us water with no ice I think because the members of our party were older which is what I would have asked for. I was ready with my order of Braised Pork Leg Rice and BKK Street Noodles with egg noodles in soup because I read fellow Yelpers reviews before choosing a restaurant and then the food. It was our 1st time patronizing the restaurant and my sister asked for the specialties of the house/recommendations with the qualifications that she did not eat spicy nor duck. The recommendation of Chicken Rice was a good one. My sister liked the tender chicken and the ginger rice. Brother-in-law asked about the juice available. The orange juice is not fresh squeezed. He decided to go instead with the iced Thai coffee and ordered Eggs Benedict. Dad wanted Mango Fried Rice with chicken and sister ordered another dish of Pad See Ew with pork. My sister forgot to order takeout and did so later in the meal. The kitchen was busy, but we did not mind waiting 15 minutes for Pad Thai and Pad See Ew. Presentation of food was good. Food had good flavor and was ample. Braised pork was tender as expected. BKK Street Noodles were a little spicy. Water glasses were refilled without being asked. Hostess checked a couple of times on everything going well. It's a calm environment to have a meal with nice music. Children in other parties were mindful of the atmosphere and were well behaved and kept their voices low. The hostess let us know she had to clear the table to get ready for the next customers so we tried to quickly vacate allowing her to rearrange the furniture.

A charming little bistro inspired by the Marlowe cows, I'm assuming, managed to stun us with several memorable dishes. The warm deviled eggs were an excellent start. Savory yet delicate enough to not weigh us down right at the beginning of our meal. The horseradish aioli wasn't for me, but I can see its appeal for a certain audience. You give me a Calabrian chili sauce and it's guaranteed to make me happy and this shrimp with sweet corn was no exception. Again, light but a punchy flavor that was enjoyable. I could go on and on about the different dishes we tried but the real standout of the night was the pork tenderloin with chorizo and peaches. The sweetness from the peaches somehow managed to enhance the flavor of the chorizo. This dish gives you a bold, savory and sweet bite all together but still won't have you feeling super heavy.
