Want a true San Francisco late night eats experience? Go to Orphan Andy's. Growing up in the city, me and my friends would always go to Orphan Andy's after a late night out. Orphan Andy's is located in the Castro, near the major Muni lines and the best part is? It's open late! They used to be 24 hours, but not sure if that's still true after Covid. A couple of friends and I went to a party downtown last Saturday night and we ended up here at 4:50AM. This place is a classic - super cozy and cute inside that just feels at home. No frills, very straightforward. Their menu is pretty standard. I ordered a decaf coffee (which I believe is bottomless) and a veggie omelette with feta cheese and I asked for crispy home fries, but it came out average - nothing to complain too much about. The server was able to split up the bill 3 ways, which was nice of her to do. I absolutely am so glad that Orphan Andy's is stiil around! read more

a little expensive for what it was ($20+ per item). we asked for sour dough bread but it tasted more like whole wheat bread. a very average diner that's open 24/7 which is nice. service was quick, i liked how they cut up the sandwich in 4 separate portions, and our waiter was very personable. decent place if youre looking for a quick diner meal. definitely lots of things to look at while youre eating, could be overstimulating for some. read more

Delicious, friendly, cozy, and welcoming. I've eaten here before, but it has been years. I had the chicken fried steak and it was cooked to perfection. The gravy had a fantastic seasoning and the chicken was delicious. I can't remember the name of the guy that took care of me, but he was friendly, personable, and knew the menu. We came here as a family. We couldn't sit together, so we just split up in the same area and had breakfast. Everything was pretty darn tasty, and the service couldn't have been better. It is just a very unique place, it's covered with blinking lights and is so colorful. It's one of the oldest gay bars in the Castro. My brother-in-law is gay, and he wanted to come, and we all had a wonderful time, and the people who work there were so sweet and kind. I went to Orphan Andy's for the first time yesterday and loved it so much. The decor was so bright and festive and the interior itself gave off a warm, cozy vibe. I truly believe it's the perfect spot if you're looking to get into the Christmas spirit. Overall, I felt like the customer service was great. The servers were very attentive and would stop by a few times to make sure we had enough tea/coffee. They were sweet and friendly which made us feel very comfortable. As for the food, I got a jalapeño burger w/ grilled onions and a side of onion rings. The portion size was pretty decent and the burger itself was delicious. I thought it was cooked very well and I could've ate another one, but I would've definitely entered a food coma. read more

This San Francisco institution for a late night after drinking in the wee hours is better and better as the years roll by. From living here years ago as a young guy to my quarterly visits from the U.K., Orphan Andy's has been a haunt of some sort for the last 30+ years. The late night country fried steak and eggs with pancakes and maple syrup gets better and better. The staff are just lovely, some of whom I recognise, and vice versa, from a bygone era. Didn't feel like this experience was even worth discussing, but since we have a very lovely Klan celebration stirring up from the most recent comment preceding mine, I will say a thing or two. My friend and I came in and we were greeted by Alyssa (thanks Rachel J. for the name drop), and she immediately and frankly rudely told us we couldn't sit at the window booth because she "wanted the table for bigger parties." Fine. Alyssa, I hope you know it's not lost on me that you sat two white couples at two different points in time in that exact spot with no qualms about it after refusing us despite them not being a bigger party either. Don't worry, I get it, though! I can't get mad about your allegiance to your people. How undesirable would Orphan Andy's look if two scary brown people were visible in the window??? Think of the optics! When we get our food, we just want to talk about some slight concerns regarding it. It was difficult to communicate this to her because it was hard to even get ahold of her. When we finally do have her, she took the situation so vastly out of proportion by trying to make such a loud scene by talking over us, badgering me, assuming and jumping to conclusions, and then before we even got the chance to say what we actually wanted to say (which was SWAP the item for something else not get it for free) she demanded that she "comp" the meal and essentially kick us out. She tried so bad to embarrass us that it just showed how nasty of a spirit she has. By the way, nothing is "comped" if you harassed us the entire experience. That's pretty much it. Rachel J, if you ever get the chance to see this and your glowing 5 star review on how much you loved your "dinner and show," ...I bet seeing two POC receive an authentic American diner experience from the 1960s WAS a treat for you now was it? Wow! This place is seriously the BEST! I went here recently with a few friends after a drink at one of Castro's infamous night clubs. We ordered a stack of pancakes, 10oz NY Steak with gravy biscuits, and an Impossible Burger. The order came out super quick, and boy it de-f'n-licious! For four people, it was quite the steal. The portions are massive and everything tasted amazing! Overall, you should come to this classic Diner - it's a great bite to eat after a drink in Castro! read more

People that know me well know that I'm a sucker for a 24 hour diner. For as many times as I've been through the Castro, it's a shame I only recently found out about Orphan Andy's. Better late than never though! I was happy to have enjoyed an evening burger and fresh OJ after the Sam Smith concert this week. The staff was attentive, quick, and friendly despite the bustling crowd of people in the small venue. Classic SF diner experience. The interior was so cute I felt like I was in a retro movie scene. The server was nice and the cake was good. We got the sour cream chocolate cake topped with ice cream. Orphan Andy's has amazing Christmas decor that you must see! The vibe in here is crazy with the retro diner fixtures, including a quarter-operated jukebox that I believe doesn't work anymore. The retro booths and bar made me feel like I was in a movie. I wish it snowed in San Francisco because that vibe would've been inside. Imagine snow on the window while enjoying some warm diner food! Now I wouldn't say the food was AMAZING or anything. It's diner food, and it did what it needed to do. I did enjoy the hotcakes for being kind of chewy. And of course the root beer float was great, which it always is. Service is great here. The staff is super personable! Prices are average for San Francisco I'd say (so on the upper end). The vibes are great inside - there is lots of rainbow lighting, vintage lamps, and various idiosyncrasies that make this spot feel welcoming and special. The place was hopping when we were offered the last 2 seats. They were at the bar counter and we were happy to be there. All four of the staff members were excellent and very efficient. Terrific diner food. I asked for eggs over easy a they were perfect. Yolks runny and whites cooked through. So many places get it wrong. The decorations were festive. We've passed by Orphan Andy's so many times while exploring SF and visiting nearby businesses. On our latest trip we made it a point to stop in for breakfast. Luckily it wasn't packed at 8:30am and we grabbed a couple seats at the counter. The staff was friendly and welcoming and before I knew it I had a steaming cup of coffee in front of me. Let me tell you, that cup of coffee was never empty the whole time we were there. They kept it full with fresh coffee, topping it off every few minutes. AND the coffee was delicious, I drank it black. We ordered sausage links and eggs breakfast ($17) and the Louisiana Hot link and eggs breakfast which we upgraded to include Biscuits and country gravy ($17.55+$4.15 upgrade) and we sipped coffee and talked about the rest of our day while we waited for the food to come in. The restaurant has some tables up front, booths and then the counter seating. It's pretty small and we learned they tend to get busy around 10am. Our food came out and it was a generous portion, so much so that I took home a small box of leftovers. The biscuits and gravy were the star for us, light and fluffy biscuits with flavorful gravy. Our over easy eggs were nice and yolky and I was able to dip my toast in the eggs. The Louisiana hot link was also delicious. The sausages and potatoes were ok, I personally prefer cased sausage links at diners and the potatoes could have been crispier but for the portion it was great. Whether you're looking for an old school diner vibe, a spot for hangover food, a cute date spot or just solid coffee and food this would be a great choice. read more

One of the few late-night spots open, but unfortunately not worth it. Service was fine, the décor has a fun vibe, and prices seemed reasonable. The food, however, was truly disappointing. I ordered the Philly cheesesteak, my partner had the patty melt, and neither of us could finish our meals, both dishes were just inedible. The fries were ok. The only saving grace was our friend's hotcakes, which they seemed to enjoy, so perhaps the very simple menu items are a safer choice. On top of that, there was an automatic gratuity included in the bill. While I always tip for service, it felt frustrating to see a forced tip when the service was bare minimum and the food was practically inedible. If you're looking for a late-night bite, I'd recommend exploring other options unless you're just after pancakes. read more

A staple in San Francisco. A great place both for locals who want to feel like home and for tourists who want to experience history on a plate. Their prices, food, and charming staff make this place a very cozy establishment. I strongly recommend ordering their Hawaiian cake. A perfect Divey Diner in the Heart of the Castro. Contrary to many people's experience here - I stopped by here absolutely stone cold sober in the middle of the day to grab lunch and catch up with a friend. And I am so glad I did. We arrived at Orphan Andy's a little after 1:30 PM. The restaurant had customers in it but wasn't too crowded at all. There is a mix of booth seating and bar/counter style seating. We were promptly at a booth when we arrived. The ambiance of this place is extremely cute - lots of flashing lights, and fun decor. Even the table had old music boxes which were a nice touch. For our food I got an order of chocolate chip hot cakes, and my friend got a Monte Cristo with Potato salad on the recommendation of our server. The food was actually so good. The chocolate chip pancakes were the perfect mix of salty and sweet and paired with the whipped butter and maple syrup on the side it was perfection. Arguably the best stack of pancakes I've had here in the bay area. The monte cristo is always a solid combination but Orphan andys did it to perfection - another great example of the salty and sweet flavor combination. By far the highlight of our meal was the service at this restaurant. Both individuals we interacted with were extremely friendly and attentive - for that reason alone I'd come back again. All in all - I had a wonderful time at Orphan Andy's yesterday. Weird that I have live in SF for so long and never been here. I was with a friend and we wanted a fast (less expensive) dinner. We had a drink next door and the headed here. We got to sit in the window booth (though the counter looks fun too). We split an entree and a chocolate malt and both left stuffed. Portions here are huge! We got the turkey bacon cheese melt with onion rings. It was exactly what you expect it to be. It was a little sloppy in construction but definitely ht the spot. The malt could have used a little more malt powder - but hit the spot as well. I will say our server was a doll and made sure we were happy with everything. See prior review for physical and menu limitations. They used to be 24/7, but after the pandemic closure, they are open all night Thursday through Saturday nights (continuously from Thursday morning until Sunday evening) and during the day Monday through Wednesday.
