I was sold as soon as I saw that they pull their own noodles. Review done! All jokes aside, my lunch was great today. I had dan dan noodles and soup dumplings. I was initially thinking about getting mala xiang guo a.k.a. dry hot pot, but thought I'd start with something I'm more familiar with. The place is adorably tiny, shoehorning 10 tables tops. I can see how some people might feel super claustrophobic, but I happen to like snug places. It was super charming imo. It was super weird when I walked in though. There were three tables of customers dining, but no staff to be found for a good couple minutes in the hall. I had to stand around, snooping behind the curtain to see if I can grab someone's attention from the back. A couple bus boys came out to grab drinks, but didn't say hi, or any sort of acknowledgment. Some folks would have thought this to be a red flag, but if you've been to enough traditionally Asian run places, this is nothing new. Doesn't bother me much. I ended up succeeding in grabbing the waiter's attention, who I think was in the back, packing a to-go order. C'est la vie. As I already mentioned, I sat down and ordered dan dan noodles and xiao long bao. I knew it was too much food, but the intention was to take home some leftover dumplings. So. Naturally, the noodles in dan dan were great! I generally love the chewiness of noodles and pastas when they're made fresh, and this wasn't any different. People generally expect the noodle to be medium-thin to medium, and this version was definitely more on the thicker side, which I didn't mind at all. Also worth mentioning is that Katy's version of dan dan is soup-based, not the traditional dry-tossed version. Personally, I enjoyed this version very much, especially because it was a very chilly, windy day in Chicagoland. The soup definitely helped warm me up. What I liked about the soup was that even though the brightly red nature of the soup's look gave me the impression it was going to be uber spicy and oily, it really wasn't. I found their mala profile to be greatly balanced to enjoy the slight numbness on my tongue, but without overpowering rest of other spices. The xiao long bao was good. I personally thought it could have used a tiny bit more soup filling, but I've definitely had my mouth burnt by scorching hot soup filling before, so it's a wash. I personally liked the slightly thick nature of the skin, but I can see how some people might not appreciate it. What I appreciated most was the taste balance of meat fillings. Whatever ingredients went inside did a great job of nullifying any meat stink, as well as elevated slight sweetness and savoriness. All in all, it was a great first impression. My cousin had never been here before so it was a treat to be able to share one of my favorite spots with her! We came for a late lunch around 2 pm so it wasn't too crowded and we were immediately seated. Since this was her first time, we decided to do an assortment of dumplings, XLB, Szechuan cold noods and scallion pancakes (forgot to take a pic). They have beverages available in the fridge but I opted for some hot tea. It's so nice to spend quality time with family eating comfort food. It's a small little hole in the wall but it's clean, cozy and the staff takes care of you. 10/1/25 update: I came here because my girlfriend was craving it. Honestly, the food is great but they mostly cater to white people. I think it's pretty obvious when you walk in and want to dine in. Lol. We were the only Asian customers there. I usually go to Chef Junes, SY Chef, or that international mall in Westmont. For the update, we ordered past favorites like the beef napa dumplings, beef tendon noodle soup, and pork belly cabbage soup (new). Dumplings were still tasty. I walked in right after lunch time so the seats were almost all filled but I got one. I had heard about them for so long. Finally I was able to try them! I was sat down and they asked me what I wanted to drink but didn't come back with it for a long while. They didn't put utensils down either for me. Everyone else after me who came in for both of those as soon as they sat down. So I was a little confused if I had to get up and get it myself or they just forgot me. I got sesame chicken, Chung du dumplings and shrimp and chive dumplings. Sesame chicken was meh. It was fried so hard that it took a harder bite to bite into it. Broccoli was okay. It came with a bowl of rice. I would not recommend. But the start for me were the dumplings!! The Chung du dumplings were a hit for me! The sauce was salty, sour, vinegary and spicy. It was very addictive. I want to buy that sauce and put it on everything. I had a friend recommend noodles so I'll come back and try that and get another dish of Chung du dumplings. The food is absolutely fantastic - 10/10 would recommend. However, after a couple times dining in, it's always a little crammed and chaotic inside - there are almost too many tables and other furniture in a teeny space. We've tried to find the "slow" times to go, and there really isn't any. It ends up stressing us out a bit to dine in, vs a more relaxing experience I'd hope for when going out to eat. They also don't have any bathrooms available for customers given the small space. I think next time we go, I'll try takeout instead because the food really is great. read more

Our water glasses were kept filled and service was prompt. Keep in mind that restaurant is small, maybe about 7 4-tops, so if you come during busy times there can be a wait. The food. Sigh. I so wanted to like it more than I did. We ordered the Chen Du dumplings and the Beef Noodle soup. Both were just okay. The dumplings were seasoned well but the wrappers were thick and doughy. The soup didn't taste like much of anything. The broth looked rich but had little flavor beyond some minor heat. There was no discernible flavor of star anise, either. My partner did not think that noodles were actually hand pulled. He could be right. If I lived nearby I would probably return occasionally but I don't feel it's worth a drive. read more

After having Din Tai Fung for the first time in LA in 2018, my family and I have been on the hunt for a good soup dumpling/dumpling spot. I remember finding Katy's a few years ago, but never got out to Westmont because it's pretty far away from where I live - until last Saturday. My family and I decided to take the trip to try Katy's out. We decided to have an early dinner because from other Yelper's photos showed the inside being super small and we didn't want to have to wait or be turned away. We got there around 3:30pm and were able to sit down right away which was awesome. There were maybe two tables left empty in the restaurant that filled up within the next 10 or so minutes of us being there. After being seated, this is where the experience started to head south. I want to preface that I totally understand and respect that this is a small business and they seemed to be understaffed, so service usually tends to be slower in these types of situations which is fine, I totally get it! But the frustration here stemmed from us ordering water and it taking 10+ minutes before we had to remind her that we still haven't gotten our drinks and our order hasn't been taken yet. Again, not the worst thing in the world or the biggest deal, we thought it would end there. When we finally placed our order, our waitress seemed to be too absorbed in the table next to us and their experience instead of ours. We ordered the crab rangoon, soup dumplings, chicken and vegetable dumplings, chicken fried rice, and the wonton soup to try a little bit of everything. The first thing that came out was our soup which was quickly placed on the table. We quickly realized that we didn't have any spoons but our waitress disappear for about 10 minutes, we ended up flagging someone down who was just refilling waters, and it still took him a while just to grab us spoons so we could eat the soup that was already getting cold at this point. Again, not a huge deal but at this point it was starting to get a little frustrating. The chicken and vegetable dumplings came out next, but they were actually the chicken and vegetable pot stickers, which I did not order and there was no clarification on the owners part to make sure I wanted to dumplings and not the pot stickers. I know when I ordered I said dumplings, but at this point in the meal I didn't care enough to send it back and ask for what we ordered. The entire point of us coming here was to try the dumplings, not the pot stickers. The worst part of the entire meal was when the soup dumplings finally came out, they were uncovered which I thought was strange, and they were COLD. There was hardly any broth inside, the dough was chewy, and it was filled with cold to barely lukewarm meat. The chicken fried rice was pretty bland, nothing really stood out to anyone. Our favorite dish was the won ton soup, the clear broth was very tasty and I really enjoyed their variation of it with the cilantro. I usually try to take pictures of everything mentioned, but I only ended up taking one photo of the crab rangoon and the chicken and vegetable pot stickers because I was over it at that point. I REALLY want to emphasize again to not sound like a Karen or anything that I understand that this a very small restaurant that seemed to be understaffed or just having an off day which I'm sure was the case due to the overwhelmingly positive reviews for this spot. Unfortunately for myself and my family, we agreed that we wouldn't try it again because it's too far out from where we live, and our first experience there was not the best. read more

Wow, business is booming here. I came on a Wednesday for dinner, and they had non-stop phone calls ordering take out starting around 5 pm. It was pretty heartwarming to see the local community really enjoy authentic Chinese food. I came here for the beef noodle soup and I was not disappointed. The home made noodles were thick like udon noodles and perfectly chewy, not over cooked. The beef was flavorful and tender. The soup was packed with pickled vegetables and had a good kick. The soup was a little too salty for my personal taste, but that is probably the only criticism I have. I also got their frozen dumplings to go. Service was prompt and efficient. The owner is very motherly and friendly. The restaurant is a bit small, only a few tables scattered around the smaller space. The bathroom is in the back, you have to walk through the kitchen area to access it. But it was kind of a cool experience because you get to see the magic happen in the back of the restaurant where the employees are wrapping dumplings and cooking the dishes. read more

The dining area was super busy and small, but that reminded me that I need to come in and do dine in to get the full exposure and experience. One of my favorite Chinese dish is eggplant and was super excited to give theirs a try. While the flavor was awesome, was not a fan of all the oil that it was swimming in. The restaurant is a cute small location with a handful of tables. It felt very intimate. We were served right away and they brought our food pretty quickly. The restaurant is small and I have had to wait for a table during peak times. Not much waiting room inside so you may need to wait outside. Lots of people also like to carryout from here. Some favorites: Grandma's Spicy Fried Rice $15 - Grandma knows her fried rice. The pop of flavors from the black bean is great. Portion is generous. Eggplant with Garlic Sauce $14 - Chinese eggplant is tender. Sauteed String Beans with garlic $14 - Good texture and flavor. Boiled dumplings (10) $12 We asked to take the leftovers home and they packed them for us but when we got home, the eggplant dish was not in the bag (there was a lot left, too). Living up to the restaurant's name, the pan-fried pork and chive dumplings were one of the highlights of the meal. It had a good flavor profile and was pan fried properly to give the skin the desired crispy texture. The (double?) stir-fried green beans were also a surprising hit and was one of the first dishes to be cleared out by our group (eating family style). Both the dan-dan noodles and beef noodle soup were solid and something I would order again. Scallion pancake and soup dumplings were also fine though not particularly notable for me. Only the dry chili chicken was somewhat disappointing. Dry chili chicken is something I almost always order at restaurants if offered, but the dry chili chicken here didn't quite have the texture or flavor profile that I typically expect (and love). Overall, I enjoyed the food I ordered. I found the chicken and crab to be very tasty. Normally, I don't like crab so I was surprised by that. The atmosphere was also nice, there were not many people when we stopped by. The only problem we had was the person I was with did not receive their order and it was just taken off the receipt. We placed our orders at the same time, the staff even asked for clarification on theirs. Mine came out and I let them try some of mine while we waited for theirs. Staff came back over and asked if I needed any boxes I let them know "No, I'm just waiting until their order is brought out too." They walked away after that. We came during the off hours on a weekday so we easily got a table. The restaurant is quite small, so I could imagine how crowded it would get during peak hours. We were met with friendly and impeccable service! We came hungry and sampled many of the dishes. Overall, I really enjoyed the meal!
