There are several ways to determine if a Chinese restaurant is authentic. For one, the majority of the diners are an older Chinese crowd. We have yet to dine in but we've ordered take-out several times and on different days of the week. Almost every time I stop by, there are several Chinese dining in. Secondly, they have two sets of menus, one consists of Americanized Chinese food such as almond ding, chop suey, and egg food young and the other consists of typical Cantonese options such as walnut shrimp, salt and spicy squid, beef stew casserole, and clams in black bean sauce. We usually stick with the Cantonese menu and have tried a variety. The only item that we are indifferent to is the pork chop Peking style. Otherwise we have enjoyed everything else and there are several items that we would reorder. Chinese Kitchen is a physically unassuming, from its obscure location to its dated décor to its generic name. However, what it lacks in appearance is definitely made up for in its dishes. read more

This is one of my go to places for takeout. Flies under the radar and does Cantonese food. The Tomato & Beef Stir Fried With Flat Rice Noodle is a crowd pleaser and you get a lot. Noodles are the best, and the noodles just eat up the sauce in this dish. The pork chop with spicy salt is definitely spicy, and will always be one of my favorites. It comes with rice, and love that it has little bits of jalapeños and onion. I can't get enough. Sometimes I'll need an Americanized Chinese fix, and the chicken with broccoli will do, I might stick to beef with broccoli, because the chicken was surprisingly a little dry. Abdolute worst place I've ever been to! I can't believe they are still open to the public! I got a simple wonton soup. It was beyond old old old. The interior of this spot looks like it's been preserved since the 70s maybe 80s, but that aside the food is the best I've found so far in the western suburbs. On our recent visit, we tried the Japanese fried tofu which was crispy, salty, spicy on the outside, and piping hot on the inside. Bangin'. Also did an order of clams in black bean sauce. Solid, but preference would be some sort of white fish (there's always next time). Beef chow fun was pretty good. Lastly, the green string beans were perfection. From the exterior, this place isn't much to look at, but the food and service were great. This was the go - to place for my family close to 5+ years and recently saw the name change and maybe new folks now running it. We have a regular order here which consists of Lo-mein . This time it was watered down with some weird sauce, which made the food un -edible. The full family just tossed the food in the garbage. Will need to find a new place going forward. We decided to try the food at Teahouse Restaurant to see if it was as good as when it was known as Chinese Kitchen. Good thing is they still serve the stuff we are use to ordering. Now they added some Sichuan/Yunnan (spicy) dishes & hot pot. Just about every one in the dining room were eating cooked dishes/entrees. Hot pot was not really a popular item when we went there. Hot pot is AYCE for $29.99 adult & $15.99 kid. The service was friendly & polite. The food is still pretty good, but the rice served now is the regular restaurant rice instead fragrant rice. Great carry out food. Our titas brought various seafood dishes for carryout, stating that this was one of their favorite Chinese restaurants outside of Chicago Chinatown. My favorite dish was baby clam in black bean sauce...just love it at Chinese buffets...and this version took it to another level. Stir fried lobster with ginger: expertly done, with tender lobster meat you can scoop out, and perfectly fine to suck on the shells to get even more flavor. So sad Chinese Kitchen closed. It was our favorite local Chinese restaurant. They had such amazing food and an incredible variety of authentic Chinese dishes. This is now Teahouse Restaurant. The large round family tables are gone, replaced by six, 6 person rectangular tables with a central warmer plate for doing tableside hot pot. Chinese Kitchen was always busy with dine in patrons and busy phone takeout. We went at 7pm on a weeknight to Teahouse Restaurant. No one else was dining in. Takeout Phones weren't ringing. Saw only 3 people getting takeout while we were there. Menu is much smaller, less authentic dishes available. Our favorite Yanzhow fried rice is no longer on the menu and no more pea pods with garlic sauce. The salt spicy tofu was still excellent. Decided to get the Mongolian lamb since they no longer have Beef Tenderloin Mandarin Style, Hong Sue Tofu (With BBQ Pork), or Shredded pork with preserved pickles on the menu. The Mongolian lamb was tasty though the sauce was very hoisin forward and the dried chilis were too leathery to eat. We got the house fried rice since there was no Yanzhow fried rice anymore. It was okay. Needed more salt. The food was good but not as good as Chinese Kitchen. We will probably try them again in future and I honestly do hope they do well, though the empty tables and sparse takeout activity don't bode well. This used to be a go-to for us but the past few times,especially the shrimp,chow mein has been watery and disappointing. Tonight my mom called in an order for us and was met with rudeness and an obvious communication problem. She had ordered chow mein for herself and pad that tofu for me. When I went to pick up I was bluntly told they don't have pad Thai. Taken off guard I ordered shrimp egg foo young and ended up with a full order because she never asked (and I didn't think fast enough) to ask for a half order. Truly a hidden gem. The decor is not the most amazing, the dining room is limited in size, service is adequate but nothing special, there's really limited to no advertising for this restaurant, and this is hidden in the back of a strip mall. From my Yelp research and looking at this place from the outside, there was nothing to suggest that this restaurant would have better cooking than the majority of Chinatown and in fact have some of the best Cantonese cooking I've tasted in the midwest. It's a good sign in Cantonese cooking when dishes come flying out of the kitchen -- it demonstrates that they're able to cook at a high enough temperature to really get the delicious seared flavors out of a seasoned wok to create wok-hay, which is critical to differentiate this from other styles of cuisine. Along with nice fresh ingredients, this cooking demonstrated great technique and texture contrast throughout the wide variety of dishes I tried. Here were my thoughts on them: Beef Congee: Pretty smooth congee with tender beef but a bit light overall in flavor and the porridge could be a lot more creamy. But comparable to most versions of this you'll find in the suburbs as making a truly great congee is a very time consuming process. Salt and Spicy Fried Smelt: Surprisingly not very salty or oily but very crisp. The jalapeno and garlic flavor really comes out very well in this dish but the it's really elevated by the "wok-hay" infused into the dish. A must try dish, one of the best I've ever had of this type. Pork Chop Peking Style: Nice and fatty meat without an excessive amount of bone. Batter is very fragrant and crisped up nicely with a thin batter. Very similar to the quality of Go 4 Food's excellent version of this dish where it is flavorful and sweet, but not excessively so. Shredded Pork Chow Mein: Nice and crispy noodles were perfectly tender port. The carrots and bean sprouts are fresh and crispy and tied together perfectly through a light gravy. Presented well with a variety of colors and textures. Turnip with Beef Stew: Beef brisket and tendon was sometimes a bit soft, sometimes a bit tougher -- but maybe it's because it was ordered too early in the day before it had a chance to be slow cooked a bit more. The turnip was very fresh and juicy and perfectly absorbed all the flavors of the beef and the sauce. Chinese Spinach with Garlic: Fresh juicy and crispy vegetables. I would've liked to get more garlic flavor in this but still good. Fu Jian Fried Rice: Surprising in that the rice used was fairly moist but the chef was able to still infuse a great flavor of seared egg yolk into the dish. The sauce was prepared nicely with fluffy egg whites to give great contrast. Japanese Tofu with Dried Bamboo Fungus: The choy was very fresh and crispy. The bamboo fungus was very crunchy and absorbed the flavor of the broth very well. The egg tofu had a very delicious seared flavor with super smooth tofu inside. Salted Fish and Chicken Fried Rice: This salted fish is nicer than most versions since it's of higher quality that breaks apart nicely, distributing the flavor evenly throughout the dish instead of giving chunks of salty fish and chunks of flavorless rice. The chicken is very tender and juicy in the fried rice and matches perfectly. Taro Roots with Pork Belly: The taro is integrated completely into the sauce instead of presented as large chunks. There is a slight sweetness to the sauce which really helps to bring out the fragrant aroma of the taro root. The light mix of spices really helps to temper the fattiness so it is still present, but you don't taste a mouthful of fat with each bite. Even with all the fat and taro root, the mouthfeel is surprisingly pleasant. Overall, very understated and hidden gem that has some of the best Cantonese style cooking the Chicago suburbs. Definitely worth a visit if you live in the Chicago suburbs as this is a lighter style of cooking (more like modern Hong Kong Style) with fresh ingredients, good technique, attractive presentation, and good thought put into the design of each dish. My review is only based on my experience, not on the food. Arrived at 8p on a Monday night after checking hours on their website (said they are open until 9pm). Neon sign in window said "open" - hours posted on door said "open till 9pm", door was open but when we entered, we're told they close at 8pm!! From the location to the exterior of the restaurant, this restaurant does not seem promising. After a friend's recommendation, we decided to give it a shot and we definitely struck gold! You know this restaurant is an authentic Chinese restaurant when the comes out super fast, are piping hot, and has beautifully charred ends on its food. The salt and spicy Japanese tofu was a really great dish! The tofu was fried extremely well and had crispy exteriors. The combination with green chili and onions gives it multiple layers of flavors, spiciness, sweetness, and saltiness. Excellent dish! The Peking style pork chop has all that one expects of it and is executed to perfection. The flavors were balanced and delicious, and the pork is fried to absolute perfection. They said that the food here is comparable to the Chinese restaurants found in LA and Asia, they weren't wrong!! They messed up two of the dishes (gave us wrong ones), which I did not realize until arriving at home. Upon calling back, they were unapologetic. They do not give refunds. I came across this little Chinese restaurant when I was picking up Nancy's pizza right next door so I thought let's give it a shot. Place is a tiny little place probably no more than 10 tables. We went at a Wednesday evening with 4 adults and 2 kids at 5:30pm and it started to get busy. Service was good and food was pretty yummy.
