I took the long Labor Day weekend to visit one of my favorite places and get my Taiwanese street food fix. Oriental Food House is the only place I go for ba wan (pork pie). Come think of it, I don't know any other place has them. Ba wan is the one of the most common street foods in Taiwan. It is made with rice or potato starch dough and usually filled with pork, mushrooms, and bamboo shoots, kept warm in oil, and served with dipping sauce. I love the chewiness of the dough. Let me tell you, they don't skim on the filling. It was absolute perfection and brought back some fond childhood memories. I also ordered Chinese eggplant in garlic sauce, stinky tofu, family style tofu and beef chow fun for my family on this visit. Everyone raved the deliciousness of the dishes. Oriental Food House also serves authentic Chinese dishes. For a small stall in a food court, they are pretty legit. Give it a try. You'd be glad you did! read more

I love this place!! It's run by a local Taiwanese family, specifically an older husband & wife duo. The wife is the one usually at the counter...not entirely nice, but not mean either. She opens up a bit more if you speak Mandarin. We always get the oyster omelette here. For $8.95, it's not the cheapest option, but it's the best oyster omelette I've been able to find in the Midwest so far. I've been meaning to try their other "xiao-chi", but unfortunately I noticed that menu for the first time after I had already ordered from other booths (the xiao chi menu is on the left side, near where the counter connects to the kitchen). This is an authentic Taiwanese restaurant, which is such a rare find for someone like me who's born and raised in Taiwan. Taste of hometown! I ordered Eel noodles on the Chinese menu (aka hidden menu!). Wow it's so delicious! The place is located in a food court, so don't expect too much decor or atmosphere. Oyster omelette is excellent here. I am impressed. They actually use chrysanthymum greens! The oysters are not fishy, big plus to me! And they mix the usual red sauce with a soy based? sauce. They do add a bit too much of it on top but still good! I love that this place has a taiwanese snack menu. Their "wa-guay" is also good. Decided to submit this review as a new business since the original listing with 3 reviews is trapped/locked in the "seafood" category. Well I'll give it four stars since I think one would have to be Taiwanese or an experienced Taiwanese food palate to judge it fully. Had dropped by the food court with family on a late Saturday night and wanted to have a casual outing where we could order a number dishes from different vendors. I ordered down their Taiwanese snack menu and the counter staff are helpful with explanations (English and Chinese), photos, and items that are ready on the counter. Items we got included their pork pie (glutinous rice stuffed with a pork filling, with a savory sauce), oyster omelette, oyster egg rolls, cuttlefish soup/stew (with rice vermicelli), the pork sticky rice tower (sticky rice steamed in ring with pork on top). Also rounded things out with eggplant w/garlic for some vegetables as well as their salt/pepper squid. We plan a visit later this month but hope to see what competing stalls offer in terms of Taiwanese offerings as well as a restaurant in Chicago. Did notice that their new menu did offer $2.50 fresh fruit smoothies or hot/cold pearl tea/coffees for $1.95. From what I've read, other stalls compete there to offer drinks at the lowest price. read more

We'd just had dinner at nearby Standard Market, so we were mostly just browsing the mall and getting some dumplings to go. We happened to pass by Oriental Food House and the lady working there was so friendly and welcoming that we had to stop. Everything in this mall is like 30% cheaper than normal Chinese restaurants, so I'm really impressed by the great service. I was excited to see that she had tea eggs!!! I've never seen that available except at my mom's. They were $1 for two and very good. My mom's are better, but I guess that's always the case :) We'll be back to try their $5.95 lunch special with included smoothies (M-F before 3pm). Of course, their dinners are so cheap--starting at $5.50 plus soup!--that we definitely wouldn't mind going there after 3. Looks like they have Japanese Tofu and several other veggie options. P.S. I loved that everybody at this mall talked to me in 80%-English, 20%-Chinese :). My Chinese is terrible, but when it comes to food names I apparently still got it. read more

I grew up in Taichung and I am very familiar with most of Taiwanese cuisine. Tried their Taiwanese food, herbal duck noodle soup, pork pie, oyster omelette, and pork and egg over rice. The herbal duck noodle soup is 4 stars. Good portion and flavor. Pork pie is decent but not great. 4 stars. Oyster omelette is 4.5 stars. Fresh veggies. A little too much sauce. Should ask for sauce on the side if possible. Pork and egg over rice is 2.5 star. A little bit on the salty side and not very authentic flavor. Egg is fine. Overall, I like Yuton's flavors better than this one. But they do offer different entries and selections. read more

Hidden inside the International Plaza.........Oriental Seafood House (OSF) is one of the 4 Asian food shops inside this slightly run down building. The food shops here remind me a bit of the hawker stalls in Singapore (obviously not as nice and inside a building). If you are looking for some low cost Asian options these shops will fit the bill. For lunch I went with the Beef Soup Noodles ($5.95). Chunks of stewed/fatty beef with loads of yellow noodles (think lo mein noodles) all simmering inside a dark anise/cinammon broth. Pretty tasty and fortifying considering that is a cold rainy Sunday (it's the middle of May!!). Wifey had a chicken congee.........not one of the better versions we have had. Watery and lacking in flavor. Could have used some garlic. Maybe a bad choice? Enjoyed some Yeo's drink products. Wifey had the soy milk and I had the white gourd drink. Nice to enjoy some Yeo Hap Seng products...a household name in Singapore and Malaysia (where we had the great oppotunity to live for 4 years). Been coming here for as long as I remember and not a thing has changed. The food is still good and it is always crowded. The food - The only place I know of in Chicago that serves my favorite STINKY TOFU. I've had better in different countries and states but beggars can't be choosers, this place definitely satisfies my cravings. They also serve a decent beef noodle soup that you can chase down with their famous warm soy milk. Parking - huge free parking lot parking. The ambiance & decor - Located inside the International mall, huge food court, plenty of seating with other restaurants to chose from. The pricing - Reasonable pricing no complaints, you'll spend around $10 an entree, and 3-4 on an appetizer and drink. Overall, highly recommend the stinky tofu its a hit or miss for many, but I've seen more hits than miss (its not really stinky.) read more

This place should be avoided at all cost, this is a tourist trap and it claims Taiwanese yet tasted nothing like it in my opinion! I ordered 2 items from their Taiwanese street foods menu to see if this is authentic since my bother told me not to go there, but I had high hopes since there aren't many authentic Taiwanese street foods restaurantsin Chicago. Ordered a zongzi and pork pie supposedly from zonghua as these 2 I am very familiar with their flavor profiles. Tasted pork pie first, it's filings are overly salty while the skin has no Q Q textured. It is just below average since it costs $4.5 for one which is way overpriced. Now the most disappoint and disgusting foods I have ever eaten in a restaurant is this their so called zongzi which smells not much and actually had slight disgusting smell to it once I spread it open. I had suspicious that it might be a bad and expired one since they place them all out in open with no steam to keep them warm whatsoever. The meat was so disgusting I immediately spit it out, the sticky rice had no flavor and like I said the faul smell of it just linger... now at this point I was kind of angry since they dare to serve customer dinning there such poor quality which made me wanted go up there and tell them. But as I think about it, it's not worth my energy since I should have noticed how this place so quite compare to other shops around it. Wasn't it an obvious sign and clear enough that such restaurant get no foot traffic during busy lunch hour of Saturday should be avoid? I just dumped unfinished pork pie and almost untouched zongzi into trash can and vowed to never order from it again... I used to frequent international food court(Ding Hao) with my parent 20 years ago and the quality of foods here never disappoint. Back then, we only got our foods from Chinese Cafe which is 2nd shop on the right from it and it is still decent as I ended up getting couple of favorites from its Taiwanese breakfast menu, the only draw down was the long line to order and very long wait for your foods, but after horrific experience that I just got with Oriental foods house, it was definitely worth the wait! It's mom and pop shop so their management wasn't so great with such chaotic traffic in a busy Saturday lunch time, but it's understandable. Being an Taiwanese American who grew up in Taiwan until 15 had tasted plenty of street foods, this place is a disgrace to Taiwanese cuisine and as a restaurant. Really good. Must try. Note: it is located inside the International Mall, so it may be hard to find. We found this place because we went to Hanbun. There are about 5 restaurants on the 1st floor of the mall. This place doesn't seem as appealing as Hanbun, but very different foods. I was really impressed. Run by a cute, humble couple with subtle twinkles in their eyes, this place is a hidden gem in the International Mall (upon entering, it's the one on the far left). We ordered 3 dishes, all of which were solid: 1) Fried salt and pepper fish: tender slices of fish with a light batter, seasoned just right (not too salty, with the right amount of pepper) 2) Beef noodle soup: a tasty umami-filled broth, flavorful and again not too salty. Generous portions of tender beef (including beef tendon -- some in my family are not the biggest fan of beef tendon, but they're a staple in beef noodle soup and add to the flavor). The noodles themselves were a bit on the soft side, but the beef and broth made up for them! 3) Sticky rice (aka "nuo mi fan" aka "you fan"): again, very flavorful and not too greasy. Well, that is to say after they were stunned that a white guy wanted more than a simple smoothie or typical American dish. For those avoiding meat or fish: They understand that "no meat or fish " means please don't add any kinda of meat or flavoring. Nice. Recommend: mango kiwi with tapioca smoothie, spicy broccoli and request tofu added, green onion pancake no meat.... Cons: hard to find a seat by the tv. Just when I was starting to bemoan the lack of authentic Taiwanese eats in Chicago (WTF) after returning from a trip to Taiwan, I learned about this place in the International Plaza Food Court, which I hadn't visited in a couple years. We had the minced pork on rice, sticky rice tower with pork ($3.50), and oyster omelette ($6.95). I saw beef noodle soup, oyster noodles, pork potage noodles, and fried intestines on the menu, but those will have to wait until next time. Not much to say except that all the dishes were tasty and the price was right. Not the best examples of each dish that I've ever had, but good enough to bring me back home. The big takeaway is that if you're missing real Taiwanese food, this is pretty much the only place to go in the whole city. Overall a much needed addition to the International Plaza Food Court scene, which has been steadily declining over the past few years. I'll be back pretty much all the time. This is the vendor on the very left when you first walk in the door. I usually just go dim sum style here and get 4 small dishes for about $23 with some leftovers. Here is a list of what I have ordered and what I thought: Potstickers- pretty good, but a tad too fried Shrimp dumpings- average Beef chow fun- a bit tasteless... I enjoy coming here for lunch. They have a wonderful shrimp and garlic sauce dish that is better than any I can remember. The noodle dishes are good, and I always enjoy the fruit smoothies (served with or without tapioca balls). Unfortunately, the lunch specials don't include seafood dishes, which I believe to be the best thing on the menu. There is tons of authentic stuff as well. They also sell dim sum, though I have yet to try it. Oriental Food House is one of several establishments in the International Food Court in Westmont, and it is the only one that takes credit cards. It is all Chinese and pan-Asian food. This food court is something to see-I wish I could find word to describe it, but I cannot. This is one quiet food court. Maybe subdued is the word. Think of it as a food court on Xanax. I enjoy reading here, and I imagine spending a lot of time here getting my shit together if I was ever unemployed. We came here for a quick bite before we head down Ogden to test drive couple cars. This place is in a food court inside International Mall. My husband and I felt this was a mini Chinatown with a lot of Taiwanese people. There were three other restaurants, but we decided to go here because I wanted dim sum (shrimp dumpling and shu mai). I ordered that and my husband ordered their combo fried rice. I must say this is the worst dim sum I've ever had. First they were both very very small. The shrimp dumpling taste weird..it did not taste like the normal shrimp dumplings I've had. Each of these cost $3.50/each..definitely not worth it. My shu mai was worse! The meat taste like powdered meat.. but my husband thinks it's pork minced together.. it's grainy..and I wasnt sure what I was eating. It has a dried shrimp (very small) on top for presentation, but the taste was horrible. My husband's fried rice was decent - it came with squid, shrimp, chicken, and beef. He thought the shrimp in his rice taste very strange so he didn't eat it. He thought his fried rice was just okay, but pretty expensive. I come from Taiwan and I tried their authentic food there. The bubble tea there is so so but at least it is not expensive. Oyster Noodle is too salty and they put too many garlic in the soup, so the soup taste is completely spoiled by the garlic. The Su-Sem Soup is very authentic and worth to try. The oyster omelet is recommended by other reviewers, but for Taiwanese, the oyster omelet is not tasty as the usual one in Taiwan. Best Taiwanese food in Chicago!!! Went with a bunch of friends and the food was fantastic and authentic! Even though the place is old, you absolutely get alot for your dollar. It's inside the International Plaza and is the one on the far left when you walk into the food court. Don't bother trying any of the other shops. This one has the best Beef Noodle Soup, oyster omelette, sticky rice tower, and green scallion pancakes. Their fresh fruit smoothies with tapioca balls are made of fresh fruits and are so good. Try their taiwanese zongzi (sticky rice wrapped in bamboo leaf filled with pork, mushrooms, bamboo shoots)... it is so authentic and perfectly made. Their salty crispy squid is the best calamari I've ever had - just right crispness and the perfect amount of seasoning.
