After seeing the reviews, we had to try this place. It's right on Butterfield in a strip mall. The decor is a little dated and the restaurant was fairly empty on a Friday evening. We were seated and taken care of by the incredible staff. Everyone was so kind and answered any questions we had about the menu. We stuck to our usual orders just to compare to our regular haunts, and we all agreed that the food here was superior to our usual spots. We will definitely be going back, and soon! There's something comforting about Mandarin House a Chinese Korean restaurant that serves up familiar dishes in a large suburban strip mall. The vibe is very much a clean Chinese restaurant with its familiar linens and Chinese zodiac place setting. Service is straightforward, but not rude. I came for the jjangmyeon, and it didn't disappoint. There's nothing quite like pork, black bean sauce, and noodles that never gets old. Also got some pea tips, beef chow fun noodles, and lollipopped chicken which was fantastic. I wish Mandarin House was closer. I'd be here all the time! I was craving Chinese food so we came to Mandarin House, which is a unique fusion of Korean and Chinese dishes. The restaurant has a menu filled with many different kinds of dishes, from poultry, to fish, to vegetarian, to specialty dishes. The standout dish for me was the liang pi. Definitely the most unique thing I've tasted before, and very different from the Szechuan version of the dish. This one had veggies, eggs, a variety of meat, and noodles all tossed together in a mustard sauce. My husband and I also got the wonton soup, which had a surprising amount of veggies in the broth. The hunan beef wasn't anything special, tasted just like any other Chinese takeout place. And the Beijing noodles had a great texture, but lacked flavor. I would definitely come back to try their other specialty dishes. Surprisingly, the menu also had other traditional Szechuan and Dim Sum dishes but I don't think that's their forte. You're probably better off getting their Korean-Chinese speciality dishes. Service was friendly. The waiters all spoke Korean. The food took a bit to be served, but the food was worth the wait. I was surprised to find out that there was a Korean-Chinese restaurant in Oakbrook and had to visit Mandarin House. The restaurant is located in a plaza with plenty of parking spots available. Interior is classic Chinese restaurant. The menu is very extensive with lots of Chinese and Korean-Chinese options. Some of the staff were Korean speaking, which was nice. They were all very friendly and attentive. For food, we ordered the sesame beef, kampoong shrimp, and seafood jjampong. I have to say that the food is mid - it's not bad but not great. The flavors and spice levels both are weak. The sesame beef had great texture. The shrimp was too fried coat was too thick and soggy, and there wasn't enough sauce. Each dish felt slightly lacking, like they just needed a little bit more flavor or spice to be good. The prices are very reasonable and the portions are generous. read more

It didn't have the texture like we're used to in Chicago Chinatown and it was tasteless. I really wanna give this place a higher mark, but didn't have the WOW l factor that were used to. 12/11/24 update: The last time I came here it was when they first opened. Their service have gotten quicker, food was made fast and they all came at once. The servers have gotten better at being more attentive like checking to see if you need water refills or if you need anything else. I'm surprised this place isn't busier since they have so much seating. This time we ordered deep fried mantou, crispy duck (half duck), gan pong chicken wing, and seafood tofu casserole. Pricing is still reasonable for the large portions. Overall, my score is the same. About 4.5. It's a solid Chinese restaurant and one of my go to. Just a side note: it's painfully obvious which reviewers are non Asian, just by looking at what you ordered. Please stop with the lame dishes like beef fried rice, crab rangoon, egg drop soup, orange chicken, kung pao chicken, etc. They have a vast menu with different items. It's a great time to introduce yourself, your friends, your family to something new. You might enjoy it. -deep fried mantou 5 - Yes it came with the condensed milk to dip the mantou in. They were hot, crispy, and moist inside. I haven't had these in a long time but they were fresh. -crispy duck (half duck) 4 - I love duck and the meats were juicy. The reason I took off a point is because there were pieces with barely any meat on them. Too many bones. -gan pong chicken wing 5 - I like the savory sauce, it has a mild kick to it. The menu is equally as daunting because it's so expansive. We ended up ordering the following: salt and pepper fish fillet, liang jiang pi (cold skin noodles), walnut shrimp, and jia jiang mian. I've never tried the liang jiang pi before but it was good and the mustard sauce was interesting. I normally don't care for walnut shrimp but it was cooked well and wasn't too saucy. However, the jia jiang mian was too salty and oily so it was a pass for me. The salt and pepper fish was my go to dish of the night. It was perfectly crispy and there wasn't too much breading. We were really thrilled to hear of this place from my family as it's really hard to find good Korean Chinese anywhere outside the northwest suburbs. We sat down and were offered both tea and iced water. So we ordered the basic Korean Chinese favorites: tangsuyuk (crispy sweet and sour beef), and jajangmyun (black bean noodles with pork). The taste of the black bean noodles were on point! A 5/5! The batter of the sweet and sour beef was great, but the sauce could've used a bit more sweetness and thickness. You can taste it with the awesome Liang Jiang Pi dish which comes w a house made mustard sauce that you can't get anywhere else. It's such a beautiful and impressive dish. We tried Mandarin House take-out for the first time Sun 17 Aug. Their On-Line menu/order system works well, with only 20 min wait for pick-up. Upon arrival you will find a brand new interior with large liquor bar in center of 2 very large restaurant eat-in seating areas. Mandarin House menu is extensive, offering single serving sized meals in $14-$20 range. There are more exotic choices in the +$40 range. Our two ~@$14 beef entrees [King Oyster Mushroom & Lo Mein] were prepared with quality ingredients and very tasty. However, we both found our single serving portions to be on the small side, especially when compared to another long established Glen Ellyn Chinese Take-out restaurant. We hope to return to the Mandarin House to try their in-house sit down food service. If you enjoy 'Americanized Asian' food, we suggest you give the new Mandarin House restaurant a try. read more

I love most kinds of Asian food, and I have been passing this place for months, so we decided to give it a try. We walked in a 6 pm on a Saturday night expecting it to be hopping, but it was almost empty which made us nervous. But we were greeted by Kathy, who ended up being our server, and it is possible she is the owner. We were joined by a good friend of mine and his girlfriend. My friend is a high level executive for the Lettuce Entertain You restaurant company. He created their Ben Pao concept restaurant back in the mid-1990s. So he is very honest about food. We ordered appetizers. Egg Rolls and fried pot stickers. They were fine. Very passable. But nothing spectacular. Two of us ordered the Hot & Sour Soup, and it was lovely. Rich and flavorful. And then we ordered the entrees. One of us had the Kung Pao Chicken, I had the Cashew Chicken, another had the Mongolia Beef, and the last main entree was Sweet & Sour Chicken. We ordered a large Chicken Fried Rice to share. The Fried Rice was okay. Nothing offensive, but a lacking in flavor. But the entrees... WOW! The portion sizes were impressive. Really big. And the flavor was wonderful. I tried three of the four dishes. We all shared. I was trying to avoid anything with breading so I did not have the Sweet & Sour Chicken, but my friend who ordered it said it was great. The Mongolian Beef was tender and rich in flavor. My Cashew Chicken had a beautiful mix of green pepper, onion, a few little hot peppers, and easily two chicken breasts-worth of meat, all in a savory brown sauce. My wife's Kung Pao Chicken was equally large, and the flavor was rich, with a hit of heat. But mild enough to eat easily. For four of us, our bill was $104.00, which I thought was very reasonable. I don't know if some low ratings early on have affected the dining crowd but I assure you, this place is worth going to. I can't wait to go back again and try some other dishes. There was a sign at the front to wait to be seated, so I did...for 10 minutes. No sign of anyone working there. Finally someone noticed me as they were walking out of the kitchen to drop off a plate at a table. She looked at me and says can I help you? And I say yes do you have a table available? And she responds with a very annoyed tone for how many and makes a gesture with her hand. I say for one, and she just walks off without saying a word to the table that she wants to seat me at. First of all: I'm far too much an American to truly rate this. My pallet, usually consisting of farm food and a lot of beef, cannot truly discern the subtleties of a black bean sauce....but I can tell you that the food here is amazing. Pea pod tips and garlic, the king mushroom and beef is good enough that I'll pick the mushrooms out first because I think they are incredibly cooked, and the egg yolk shrimp are out of this world. I think they make their sauces -- the sweet and sour sauce specifically -- in house...which is a welcoming divergence from so many other places. I've only carried out from Mandarin House once so far, while helping a friend with errands. They had only opened a few days prior, but they seemed to know what they were doing. When I was there, they had done a nice job converting a section of the old Olive Garden into a simple but cozy Chinese-themed restaurant. It's a big spot, so they should have plenty of seating for large parties (though I'd call ahead if possible). The menu was predominately northern Chinese dishes (dumplings, noodles, and buns featuring beef and chicken), but also had some Guangdong, American-Chinese, and some Korean inspired dishes. I wanted something quick, so I got the Garlic Chicken from their lunch menu. It was a lot of good food for the money, with tender chicken, savory straw mushrooms, chopped garlic, and water chestnuts that were well prepared. I asked for white rice instead of fried rice, which was nicely steamed. The egg roll was pretty good, with a lot of veggies (I love a lot of cabbage in mine). They also have Grape Fanta, which is awesome! The plaza they are in is fairly convenient to get into from either direction on Butterfield, and you can enter from northbound Findley near the Rockwood Taphouse (the road connects to the shopping center). There's PLENTY of parking on either side of the restaurant, which is in the corner space. Sadly, my previous favorite carry out place in the neighborhood, Double Dragon, hasn't been as consistent - I'm hoping my good experience with Mandarin House continues in my future visits. I don't know what this style of Chinese cuisine it's called, but it's my favorite and Mandarin House does it well? Usually the proprietors will be ethnically Chinese but have some roots in Korea. So if you like restaurants like Chef Ping in Rolling Meadows or Yu's Mandarin in Schaumburg, you'll like Mandarin House. Dined in with a couple of friends and we ordered Mongolian Beef, Seasame Chicken, and Mongolian Trio. The bottom line is that all three dishes were each delicious and well made! The hot and sour soup was a tad on the sour side, their pork egg rolls were about average, fried rice was light (not heavy with oil) and complimented our entrees well.
