The service here was very friendly and welcoming. However, the food was a mixed bag. I tried the lobster bisque, which was just okay--nothing special--and I was honestly turned off when I saw more of it being brought out and heated in a plastic bag. I was very disappointed with my experience. The prices were far too high for the quality of the food. My meal was overcooked, and the portion and overall quality were nowhere near worth what I paid. Feeling strain of the current economy and policies from our administration, I felt that it was time to try a fried seafood joint with prices that were a bit more affordable - especially compared to Kimball Farm. Located in Westminster, MA this places feels pretty out of the way compared to many other destination restaurants. Alternatively, I guess it's pretty cool that a damn good seafood shack is available if you live way out here. This place is totally loaded with parking spots. Although when I arrived, it was pretty busy and I still had to do a single circle around to find a spot. Outside, there is the typical long line waiting to order ice cream. I did not get any this trip, so I don't have any comment. You must go inside if you want to order the fried foods. Inside is pretty minimal. There are small tables along the side of the walls if you and one other person want to eat inside. The central area is clear, and of course you order at the counter. The cashier was nice made sure to double-check if everything was ordered right. The wait times though, were not so great. It took 35min from the time of ordering to finally receive my food. I guess there were about 5 orders before me, but that's still quite the long wait. I ordered: Double-Stuffed Lobster Roll $31.99. Oh man, at first look, this bad boy is loaded! It's a Maine-style lobster roll, so it's served cold and mayonnaisey on a lightly toasted New England-style hotdog bun. I'm not quite sure if I agree with filling the bottom of the bun with shredded lettuce. I think it dilutes the flavor of the lobster (lettuce is mostly water!), and it also feels like a shady tactic to make it look fuller than it is - like a food commercial. Scallop and Whole Belly Clam Combo $27.99. At first glance, the serving size is a little disappointing when directly compared to Kimball Farm's "Pick Two Seafood Combo" but I have to remind myself that their equivalent combo would've been $41.45 / $49.95 (depending on the size). With that in mind, this is a fair portion, and actually it's a lot better if you don't want to feel totally stuffed and lethargic. The fries, coleslaw, and tartar sauce are all exactly what you've had before. No comments. The whole belly clams were yummy, but there weren't many huge pieces I'm accustomed to. The scallops were perfection! The batter was perfectly lightly seasoned, and the scallops were still moist with every bite, even after waiting to eat it at home. Big fan of this place, and I'll totally come back here to try out the ice cream. This might be my new favorite scallop place if the quality remains consistent. read more

There isn't much out here in this area. My brother lives a couple of towns away w my Mom. So when I said "lunch" we came here. It is takeout winter cool months or sit down picnic table with a roof connected to kitchen for warmer seasons. We brought home: clam chowder, clam rolls onion rings and fries. All pretty reasonably priced. Cooked fresh and delicious. S and S Lobster in Fitchburg owns Kay's. The menu has many seafood offers which are very tasty here too, shrimp, scallops, fish, all kinds of seafood. S and S does a brisk business in Fitchburg and has a good reputation. Here at Kay's, a similar offering of clams whole belly or strips, scallops, chicken fingers etc. kinda the same menu here. We like whole clams. I had a maple walnut ice cream cone of Gifford's from Maine ice cream that was delicious, todays special $1.99! Pretty good! Then call us over they don't have Oreo cookie ice cream anymore but they can give me vanilla ice cream with crushed Oreo on the side ... whattttt the... okk so we settle for that. Went to Kay's tonight after seeing a post of their specials. Fish tacos and the spicy garlic chili tenders. The fish tacos we liked but definitely want to try them again, as they ran out of grouper and they were made with haddock instead. Would definitely pair well with a nice cilantro, lime cream sauce. The boneless spicy garlic chili tenders were Ah-Mazing sweet to start and then spicy.. definitely recommend getting them with their ranch, it makes them taste similar to the old Border wings! Trust me you won't be disappointed if you like spicy chicken with flavor. Never disappointed whenever we go to Kay's, so we will definitely be back. read more

They also serve ice cream, if you have room left over after the ample serving size of dinner get some ice cream :) Lobster rolls are generously sized. Scallops are one of my favorite dishes here. Have been going to Kay's for years. I always order a double stuffed lobster role and clams. Last evening ordered the same. The lobster role had zero flavor, if I had to guess, the lobster is now not fresh and is now previously frozen. $11.99 for a small clam box, this was 4 overly large clams, could not even eat the belly, as it was the size of a .50 cent piece. Lots of everything! Lots of parking, outdoor seating, ice cream flavors, food, and workers. Also, lots of people in line (I waited 25 minutes around 1:30 pm). This seemed to be because of the general incompetence of the staff. They could not keep orders straight, we're confused by a request to pack ice cream to go, and all took their breaks at once. Ice cream was fine. The turtle sundae has peanuts, not pecans (which is traditional). The boats take extra time, I believe because they had to go to the wharf searching for them. 9 months ago I went here and this has been my experience then and now today. Absolutely disgusted, i really used to love this place until last night. Got there at 7:15 with my kids. We waited in line for about 13 minutes.We ordered $70 worth of food we were done ordering our Icecream when the girls said they cant take my Icecream order inside that i had to start over at the end of the outside line, that was another 10 or more minutes. We get to the front and they take our order, my son wanted only the gummies so we asked for a small cup of just gummies. They charged us $20 for the gummies. We asked for specific gummies because my son has ASD hes very particular about what flavors hes ok with. The girls behind the counter made a huge scene about him wanted just gummies on the side, youd think we asked them to build a rocket ship, rhey complained and yelled about it the entire time laughing and making jokes and embarrassing my 7 year old son. We open the gummies and start eating our Icecream and next thing i know, my 3 kids are all crying screaming and puking. They filled the cup with spicey pepper shaped gummies that were so spicey they made us all sick. My son now has blisters inside his mouth. These peppers are made with extremely real spicy pepper. It ruined our entire meal we packed it all up and went home because we couldn't taste any of it and we all were eaither almost throwing up or actually throwing up and unable to eat. When we asked them whybthey did that they laughed and said you asked for a cup of gummies. No we asked for specific ones because we know they are all seperated. There was no need to basically poison my family for their entertainment. I am extremely disappointed in this disgusting game they played. That wasnt funny nor was it a joke nor was it safe, i have a 2 year old a 6 year old and a 7 year old who all couldn't eat almost a $100 in food. All waisted Update as of 5-26-2023 Went there with two of the 3 kids today to redeem the $80 credit they gave us "which I have documented in other photos" and after my kids picked what they wanted my kids were told they aren't welcome there and we're told to leave. The owner had my review pulled up on his phone and said that "I harassed them" by writing this review. Not a family friendly Place anymore. It's not what it used to be and that's a shame. Amazing! looks like a hole in the wall, old place I would normally just drive by. recommended by a friend for seafood lovers. 6'8" boyfriend couldn't finish the big lobster roll without giving up on the roll and using a fork for the good stuff inside. Wow! S&S Lobster finally got Kay's back to where it was. Been a couple of times this season and the seafood always tastes fresh, portions are good, prices are what I expect at a New England dairy bar. There is a new "call ahead" option to beat the wait, which I always remember just after getting in line. Staff are much better tham they have been. There is still a long wait for the food, in part because so many people go there but some extra cook staff might help. Getting a seat in the shade is hit or miss, those seats go fast. Kay's could do with some sort of latticework on the west porch seating area to give some respite. read more

To the owners of Kay's Dairy Bar. Step up and show yourself. After a date night, my girlfriend and I went to Kay's for an after dinner ice cream cone. Sitting in line for 15 minutes, only for an employee to yell out, " We are now closed for ice cream. We looked around us, one couple ahead of us and no one behind us. I was surprised we were denied service as we were waiting in line. I was not happy and wanted to communicate my frustration. Seafood is sooo good! But the wait times and lines can get a bit out of hand. The ice cream side of the business carries a nice variety of flavors for both hard and soft serve, however they are quite disorganized and frequently make mistakes on things. It's understandable though, as they staff our community's teens during the summer, so we just laugh it off and give grace. I am always impressed with how the managers patiently ok with the new staff at the beginning of the season. They also carry a variety of interesting selections such as fried pickles, alligator, and $1.99 daily Sunday specials. My son swears by their kid's burger. Ok so the best thing about Kays is the quality of the seafood. Truly love any walk up and order place like this. Makes me miss summer so much when it gets cold and its like being on vacation for a moment to eat outside in the nice weather with some freshly fried goodies. The wait after 5 or on the weekend can be brutal, especially when its really humid out and the indoor order area fills up quick. Reminiscent of a sauna. I feel for the staff on days like that! Do yourself a favor and call in your order for take out. .. walk in, skip the humid line, collect dirty stares .. grab utensils and have a seat outside ! You even get to skip returning the cafeteria tray since your food is already in a to go box!! What I can recommend: Haddock Filet (for chips traditional) or the chunks for more crispy crunch Fishermans platter - huge and the scallops are ultra sweet Onion rings - thin rings but not stringy. Batter is perfect Chili - spicier than Wendy's chili with more tomato base Stay away if you can from the burgers and don't depend on the fries to be phenomenal- these are are actually the biggest let down of the place. Shockingly enough so is the hard ice cream. Soft serve is very nicely done and you can get huge super cones of all kinds of classic combos and flavors but the hard ice cream is nearly tasteless. Bring the dog and have a seat out back on the grassy area to avoid the busy loud road. Lots of people see, to bring pets and it's a relaxing time for them. So many hidden gems off Route 2! After my friend and I left an event at Mt. Wachusett today, I insisted we pass by Gardner because I wanted to see the famous giant chair. We felt like ice cream after and a quick Googling led us to Kay's just over the line in Westminster. Kay's is a combo ice cream/casual take out with picnic benches scattered about its grounds. We were there for ice cream, but almost caved for food as the smell of fried clams drifted around us in the ice cream line. There's an inside counter for food orders and an outside window for treats. The ice cream menu consists of soft serve, regular serve (is that what it's called?), and different sundaes, etc. I like that the serving cups are 'true to size' and not monstrous like some. Although sometimes I do feel the need for a massive ice cream, the small size was just perfect today. The line moved a bit slowly, but service was friendly. What a great discovery! read more
