Once known as Sweet Melissa's, Kay's Pizza was the highlight of my weekend in Savannah. After a serious recommendation from a waitress the previous night, I made sure to stumble in...literally...before a drunken ghost tour I planned around the Riverfront. I figured a nice cheesy slice was a good base for some heavy drinking. Boy was I right! Slices are wide and thin. Definitely a classic NY Foldable crust, just with a special surprise underneath. I say special surprise because when you first fold that baby, you're greeted by flakes of fresh oregano, parsley and rosemary. Had me moaning "Yass Honey!" Forget the traditional corn meal, here at Kay's, they literally infuse the crust with fresh herbs. Very nice touch! One slice is a huge portion but you'll be tempted for a second once you inhale the first because yes, you will literally inhale it. My drinking partner described it perfectly by screaming "I want it ALL UP in my face!" If you arrive before 9 p.m. they serve a wider variety of slices like veggie or meat lovers. They switch to classic pepperoni and cheese slices once the drunk crowd rolls in after 11 p.m. I would know first hand, since I stumbled in TWICE in one night. Came here twice!! We walked by one time and I smelled something so delicious and savory. I looked up and saw Kay's and had to go in and get a slice. I wasn't even hungry. Walking through and picking a pizza was a breeze. Well worth the price especially around lunch time!! One plus is that they also have a bathroom to use!! complete trash establishment since ownership changed. this place was amazing and it's painfully obvious "kay" intended to ride sweet melissa's reputation. sweet melissa's was always open for late night customers, it was THE place to go at the end of the night. it was a staple to the savannah downtown scene. since it became "kay's" the pizza quality has majorly declined (basically greasy cheese covered bread), customer service is slow (be prepared to wait in a crazy line if they are even slightly busy), it's unclean (sauces left out overnight and not covered... visible in the window), and they close insanely early... so good luck if you want that night life late-night food experience that every other city has. every respectable city has a late-night food place, since "kay" bought the place they ruined a critical piece of the culture and frankly it's really embarrassing for the city of savannah. you used to be able to go to SWEET MELISSA'S, get a great pizza, late at night, quick, treated well. now they close before midnight while listing their hours as open until 3am. given that the pizza has become trash, i have no idea why anyone would go there unless they are drunk... but they close so early that's not even possible. let this awful business decision fail, speak with your dollars. they don't respect their patrons so you shouldn't respect their stingy business. Okay before I get started let me say I like thin crust pizza. I am a fold in half and eat it guy. This place serves thin crust pizza but takes it to an extreme that it seems just like a gimmick. It's paper thin crust and then soaked through with the grease from the cheese and toppings so it's soggy with absolutely no structure. The flavor isn't bad but this ridiculously thin soggy texture is off putting. Now onto the atmosphere. It's a cramped small space which is fine for a pizza by the slice place. The problem is they take this small space and then crank the music up to a level that you can't hear the person two feet away from you. The employees just throw the food at you and walk off. They're goofing off and screaming at each other over this loud music. There are better places to get a slice. Hate to say it but I do not recommend this place. read more

I noticed the menu only gave the option for cheese or pepperoni, and the price was sort of high for a single slice, but the slice looked huge. We opted out of getting pizza and got a salad instead. This was not the best pizza I have ever eaten but it was quick and reasonably priced. I purchased whole pizzas on multiple nights to take back to my hotel and they were good but not outstanding. The crust had herbs mixed right in and was quite unique. The topping were sparse but all tasted good. The oven may have been sped up a minute or two too fast to get the crust properly browned. (Give her a raise) I love the idea of giant slices, seems like only something you see on diners, drive-ins and dives with that smash mouth look alike. The crust was crispy and a little sweet, while the cheese was fatty but not greasy. If you say you don't like your cheese that way, you're a liar and you know it... do some soul searching. On my last in Savannah I exited a bar and I was pretty hungry. I passed this place earlier in the day when i was walking around with my family. Simply put the smell lured me in! I can't tell you how good this place is! It was about 1:30am and the line was out the door. I got one slice to eat there and one for the road. Ended up eating both of them there! Plenty of parmesan and crushed red peppers on deck. They had cheese and pepperoni but what else do you need? Super fast and friendly service. The slices are huge! I loved it! The two stars are for the pizza, which was tasty. The lack of full stars is purely because of the rude (and most likely racist) girl behind the counter. My family came in here just after arriving in Savannah late night, mainly because everything else was closed. It was just after midnight, so the only thing available was the pepperoni or cheese slices. The very serious-faced girl behind the counter informed us that personal pies can only be made before 10pm. Sure, no problem- we had a few of the pepperoni and cheese, and they were good. We thought it was weird how stone-faced the girl behind the counter was, but gave her the benefit of the doubt, thinking it was late at night and she might be tired or having a bad day. However, the next day, we were walking by earlier in the night (before 10pm) and saw her through the window, playfully dancing behind the counter and smiling with some white customers. So, in we went, and immediately, all signs of emotion left her face to be replaced by that same steely gaze and short replies. My sister-in-law asked if she could have a personal pizza made and the girl replied that no, it was too late (even though it was not 10pm yet). Sure, the pizza is good. But if you care about equal treatment of people, then I would not support this establishment and take my money elsewhere that is more open and inclusive. It's a tourist town for god's sake, and this was our first 2 days in Savannah (and the south of the USA) so hopefully that is not the kind of impression you want to leave on visitors. The new owners have hired what look to be people barely out of their teens, that carry shitty Walmart .22 pistols hanging off their drooping pants in a level one holster. I'm all for open carry, but these assholes are cocky, sloppy and are literally dangling a firearm with a belt clip off the pocket of their pants hanging lower than their ass. They've garnered a following that isn't safe... Friends of the "armed security" hang out outside and intimidate other patrons, and it's only a matter of time before someone gets shot here. 2 years ago we happened upon Sweet Melissa's pizza. It was the best pizza we ever had. When we planned to return to Savannah, I couldn't wait to get the pizza again. I was devastated to find out that Yelpers were stating that Sweet Melissa's was closed. I was soooo happy to get here and find out that the restaurant is still there under a different name- Kay's, and is THE SAME PIZZA!!! For $44 you get an extra large c&p pizza that is to die for. There are herbs baked into the super thin crust, just the right amount of sauce and cheese. It's huge- has to be almost 36inches in diameter. I really can't say enough about it. read more
