This is my hibachi home away from home. I hate to admit my favorite place is a chain hibachi restaurant but if you're looking for somewhere that won't break the bank, offers really good sushi, and tastes just as good please look no further. The fish was a little overcooked. That's literally my ONLY complaint about this place. Service was spectacular and fast. The food was tasty and priced well for what you received. The iced green tea was fresh and not overvbrewed (and refilled often!). The sushi is a bit pricy for the small size of the roll I had, but it was very fresh and delicious. Tried Kazan for the first time today during lunch hours. You cannot beat their prices. I paid 14 dollars after a 3 dollar tip for a steak and shrimp combo hibachi lunch. I even ordered extra onions! The wait was minimal. I sat down with no one else in my group at the hibachi grill, and the waitress asked me if I mind waiting for more guests to show up. I said no, all the while dreading the wait I was sure I was about to face. After ten minutes with no one else showing up they proceeded to start my meal. Big thumbs up for that! The onion soup was out of this world good. They use actual hand fried onions made in house. Not the French's that we usually get at hibachi restaurants. There was also a little kick to the soup which made it super interesting to eat. Now to the reason for the 3 star, and please don't let this deter you from going to try this place for yourself. My food was alright and just that. The chef was heavy handed on the teriyaki. This would've been okay by my standards except that the sauces were not good. Each of the three sauces I got for me meal tasted unusual and just strange. I was hoping to be able to dump some yum yum all over my teriyaki soaked food but I didn't because it was a weird yum yum. Overall I would go back, probably for soup and to try sushi. I might be the weirdo who brings their own yum yum out in the middle of the restaurant if I decided to give the hibachi another shot When considering all factors, price, quality and quantity. We went to Kazans for our adult daughters birthday. Had reservations but still had to wait 30 minutes finally got seated. Waiter took our drink order but took forever to get them. We ordered food finally and waited for our soup and salad - Kazans ran out of soup so they had to make more - didn't receive it until meal came. Also we ordered edamame and they ran out so we had to wait for that too. Restaurant ran out of silverware and cloth napkins-we were given plastic forks and tiny tiny one ply napkins. They also charge for fried rice when it use to be free. WE'VE BEEN COMING HERE FOR LONG TIME BUT I THINK THIS MADE A BIG STATEMENT TO STAY AWAY!!!! read more

Incredible!! Everything was perfect. The atmosphere was gorgeous, the service was friendly, and the sushi was super affordable and super delicious! Couldn't recommend this more. Best sushi I've had in Indy and I write a lot of reviews. I got 4 rolls, including a specialty roll, for 30 bucks and it was top quality. This was a homer! Addendum: I've continued eating here all month and it's my favorite sushi place in Indy! Trust me on this...get the "God of Fire" roll. The food is good, I've only eaten inside once but I've had it for takeout a few times because it's close by. I always get the hibachi combo w/ shrimp and steak which is delicious. Eating inside is slightly better because the food is really salty to me when you order it to go. Even when I asked them to reduce the salt, it was still salty. Kazan is a standard Japanese steakhouse an I rack my brain trying to think of how many onion volcanoes have been lit here. Everything from the portions to the music to the restrooms is exactly the same Japanese steakhouse you've ever eaten at and that's not a bad thing. read more

During the week the place is empty but on the weekend it fills up (still much faster than the more popular chain). Update: Management is terrible. Long waits. Customer service is nonexistent. We went here a couple weeks ago. Worst it had ever been. We get there and other customers are complaining about their food to the manager. Said something about a new cook. Another guy was standing there waiting in a called in order. It took over an hour to get. 2 other couples left because no one was even acknowledging that any of us was standing there waiting to be seated. Once we finally got seated, the food was ok. Great food! Great Service! With a plethora of Japanese hibachi grills to choose from north of Indy, Kazan is one of my favorites! I'm partial to Fujiyama south of Indy, but with the hour and a half drive, we had to find something closer. If you're near Greenwood or Southport, I highly recommend Fujiyamas. Anywho, for the north/westside Indy peeps, Kazan is about a perfect match! I absolutely LOVE their soup and salad! The soup looks like broth, and it mostly is, but has an amazing flavor. The Japanese ginger salad dressing is unbelievably yummy!! You will definitely leave very satisfied from the large portion of fried rice and veggies! I usually get the hibachi steak and shrimp. Kazan offers an appetizer with meals, which has a choice of shrimp, chicken liver, or mushrooms. The chicken liver is wonderful. They give 2 sauces to dip veggies and meat into. They also have a sushi bar with extensive options. We have always had exceptional service here. It's pricey, but definitely worth it!! read more

I wish I could've given this place zero stars but unfortunately that isn't an available option. We got here for dinner at 6. We placed an order for sushi for myself and hibachi for my husband. We quickly realized that in 14 degree weather they did not have their heat turned on and shivered through our whole meal along with the rest of the parties at our hibachi table. A worker came out to mess with the thermostat and jokingly told us they probably didn't pay the bills. The music was skipping to an odd sound repeating over and over for 15 mins. We went through the entire hour plus dinner with zero sushi. We inquired multiple times and they kept saying they'd check on it. Finally I begged them to bring even one roll so I could eat something, anything. An hour and a half after being there they finally brought all the rolls. Everyone else got their checks and left dinner before I had even been served. Then get this, they expected us to pay full price for our meal. I told them I'd gladly pay for my husband's hibachi dinner but none of the sushi since it was the laughing stock or the whole hibachi table. The waitress consulted with the owner of the restaurant and came back and said he'd take $10 off $25 of a sushi order because they were "busy" even the the majority of the restaurant was empty. What a joke. No idea how this place has such positive reviews. You couldn't pay me to eat at this laughable establishment ever again. read more

DO NOT ORDER TAKEOUT. This place has changed. I can tell their business has dropped, and with it, they're cutting corners. It's been a while since I ate in the restaurant, but any time I order sushi Togo, I'm quoted a time, and arrive and sit for an additional 30 minutes or longer because they make the food for people in the restaurant first, with no discount given to me after sushi taking over an hour in total. On the hibachi side, Togo salad portions are beyond laughable, they changed their mustard sauce, (and give you next to nothing Togo), and their soup has far less in it than it used to. With no portion sizes on the menus, I wouldn't be surprised if they're giving us less of the proteins we order as well. It's a shame, because the staff is always friendly. Just got a whim to eat late on a Wednesday night. 9:15. Where to go? Was on the NW side near the Pyramids and dodged into a strip mall to see what, if anything, was open. Saw Kazan. Went "Shazzam!" Kazan offers a sushi bar and hibachi tables. For hibachi, think Beni Hana. Ordered some sushi while sitting at the hibachi table and it was excellent. Ordered the hibachi steak and was very impressed. All the flavors, down to the fried rice, were excellent. The steak looked beautiful when the chef put it on the grill and tasted wonderful when it came off. They offer the usual miso soup and ginger-dressinged salad which were fine. The choice of appetizers (shrimp, mushooms or chicken liver) made a nice addition to the meal. The fresh vegetables were tender and delish. I can't say enough nice things about this place. The service was impeccable even for so late at night. I was treated royally and greatly appreciated it. read more

I took my son here for lunch the other day and was impressed. We ate at the sushi bar and enjoyed tuna and salmon rolls. We received the food quick and well prepared. Another great sushi joint on the north side! My mom and I frequent this place because it's right between where we both live. Easy to meet up for a some sushi madness! We usually sit at the bar and order the same thing: green tea, miso soup, salad, and some rolls. My typical fancy is the unagi roll and some spicy tuna, and my mom digs anything with crab in it. We always leave happy and full, and here's why: - Awesome bar server - Same dude. Always cool. Not a lingerer. Bonus. - Freshness - Seriously, the rolls here are always fresh and full. I've never felt like I got robbed on the roll size. And I love, love, love their miso soup as well as the ginger dressing on the house salad. Delic! - Affordable - Really decent prices for rolls, pretty standard stuff. - Relaxed atmosphere - We're usually the only ones at the bar, or in the restaurant, but we like it. Kind of a divvy-feel, dim lighting inside, nothing fancy. I appreciate that. - Grand finale - I'm easily amused, so when we get the culinary-sliced orange, cut into fourths and stuck with a toothpick to eat, I feel like a 5-year-old who just got a balloon. It's like a free dessert, and it cleanses the palate ever so nicely! They make my tummy happy every time, and that's good enough for me. This place is the only one in Indiana that was so good for hibachi and sushi that we have been to . We have tried a few other places and they were crap compared to this place. Even tho it is an hour away..it was completely worth the drive. We got there early, about 530. We were seated right away. The staff was funny and friendly. They treated us very well too. Place itself was very large and it was very clean. Very nice set up and decor was very pretty. The soup and salad were so yummy, best we've had. The sushi was super fresh and rolled perfectly tight and yummy. The sashimi was so fresh, it was soft when you took a bite. The hibachi was like all the rest but our chef was amusing and was nice. I had a filet mignon, scallops and shrimp and they were cooked to perfection and not to mention very tasty. We would definitely make the trip back!!! read more

We've eaten all over Indianapolis in search of decent Sushi. Nothing has compared to the kind of food we're used to out west (CA + NV). We were about to give up hope until we saw the high ratings for Kazan on Yelp. We got the miso soup to start and to be honest it was reduced and on the salty side. We asked for hot water and diluted it down to perfection. We then tried the salmon and volcano rolls. Took a while to make but it came out great. Fresh and simple they were... not too much mayo or anything like that. Not satisfied we got an EJ roll and big mouth roll. The wait was worth it. The sushi chef Rick pays great attention to his dishes and strives to make sure you're getting the best. The EJ roll was good and its richness was well balanced with the raw fish inside the roll and with the raw fish of the EJ roll. Even though we were stuffed afterwards they gave us complimentary sliced orange for desert which was a nice touch. read more

Kazan is like any other teppanyaki joint. A guy comes out and does a little act for you (twirls his utensils around, makes an egg "roll", creates an onion ring volcano/choo-choo train, etc.). Went for Christmas dinner with our small family, 6 total including 2 small kids. Food is great and the service is good too.. we had one sushi roll, NY volcano roll it was awesome spicy and sweet at the same time. The only things that made me not give them 5 stars, I didn't think there was enough of a show, since we had little ones it would have been nice for them to be entertained. We sat with some (regulars like daily) and i think the chef felt he didn't need to do all the tricks. My boys did love the food, i think it was the most they ever ate EVER. Also there was a up charge for fried rice and it wasn't told to us or shown on the menu so that was a bit of a show.. we love this place and go often as date night. read more

Stopped in after a failed attempt to eat at Daruma...and was pleasently suprised by the sushi. Had a few veg rolls, and miso soup...the rolls were fresh, and very tastey. I sat at the sushi bar (the only one there), so was able to speak with the sushi chef a bit. He was very nice, and seemed to take great care in making the rolls. The miso was good, a bit salty, but that is a usual issue sometimes. A glass of house cab sav, anda green tea rounded out my meal. Found it to be very nice all in all, definetly not too expensive, granted I cannot speak for the hibachi side of the house. I would recommend it if you're in the area...it seems there are some more trendy places for the young hipsters to go (H2O Shushi for example), but this place was good for sure. read more

We used to love Kazan and their hibachi. However the last two times the meat has not been cooked properly. Once it was my steak - under cooked and very fatty. Next it was my chicken not tender and stringy. Returned another time and the service is so slow. Waited for at least 30 mins for them to fill the table then more waiting for the hibachi. read more

Took my nephews there for dinner on a Saturday night. We had reservations at 6pm and showed up a little early. We were seated right away, no problems. The staff was friendly and helpful without being hovering or overbearing. Our hibachi chef was very nice and did a good job of entertaining us. Our food tasted great and there was plenty of it! You definitely feel like you get your money's worth here. I had the filet with the mushroom appetizer and fried rice. One nephew got shrimp with the chicken liver appetizer and the other got the NY Strip with the shrimp appetizer. My husband had the NY Strip and mushrooms. We all loved our dishes. The cost of dinner is a bit out of our normal price range, so we won't be visitng Kazan very often. However, it's a nice place to have a special, fun meal. read more

So I was craving Japanese food the other day. I remembered this place was in the plaza up the street from my home. Instead of calling to do a carry out I decided to just go to Kazan and order in person. Kazan is in a very busy plaza with Kroger and Buffalo wild wings. When I went inside to order I could see people at the bar eating sushi. The restaurant is very spacious. This place is dimly lit. It may be to dim for some people, but I'm sure they could turn on more lights. A man came out and asked if I wanted to dine in or make a reservation for a group. I let him know this was my first time here and I just wanted to make a carry out order. I asked if they could accommodate someone with seafood allergies. He replied yes they can separate food from seafood and they have vegetarian options as well. I was pleased to hear that. I ordered the hibachi chicken. It comes with a choice of fried rice or steamed rice. Also salad with ginger dressing, onion soup, and either shrimp or sautéed mushrooms on the side. It told me it would be a minimum of 20 minutes to cook everything. I decided to just go and shop at a store. When I came back the food was done and it had been 20 minutes. The bill came out to be about $15 and some change. Not bad for the amount of food I got! The food was really good! They even put in two types of dipping sauces, one tasted like a peanut sauce. The ginger dressing was delicious as well, I love ginger. I will definitely be back. Next time I hope to come with friends so we can dine in. You can either sit at a regular table, a table with the grill in the middle where a chef cooks in front of you, or at the bar. read more

Most of us had the Hibachi steak and shrimp - the chef cooked it in front of us and entertained us as well. Sushi and sake rounded out the dinner for several of us. I frequently visit Kazan for their hibachi lunch specials. Their food is great and they offer affordable lunch deals. My only complaint is the service. The staff is always friendly, but I've been here a few times during lunch and it's taken an hour and a half, if not more. I understand that the hibachi grill takes time to cook, but I've been to other hibachi restaurants for lunch/dinner and it's never taken this long. Pretty good. You can choose to sit at a regular table or at a hibachi table. We choose the latter. It ended up being just the two of us for the typical hibachi presentation. They did the usual tricks. It was still amusing. I had some salmon sake while we waited. It was pretty good. The rice had just a touch too much vinegar in it for my taste, but the fish tasted fresh and were in nice, thick pieces on the rice. Seems like everyone has a sushi restaurant review today...so here is a brief review of Kazan. I had carry out, therefore, atmosphere and service can not be commented on. Its all about the rolls. The standout was their Volcano. It was nothing fancy....more like a working mans Volcano Roll....so don't expect flames. I realize there is no sushi joint that offers carryout flaming rolls. My only gripe was one of the veggie rolls was cut so thin that it crumbled easily. Good solid stuff....nothing fancy. Works for me! read more
