This is my first review of 2026!…read more Tonight I enjoyed the sticky rice with chicken anticucho and it is my favorite meal of 2026 so far. The chicken thighs were beautifully seasoned and slightly charred. The meat was cooked all the way through yet still juicy with bone in thigh. The purple sticky rice was perfectly done and I love the texture of sticky rice in general. The plate also came with sliced cucumbers and pickled mustard greens (reminiscent of Vietnamese pickled mustard greens - but in a much more vibrant green color). My favorite part of the meal was the tart and aromatic sauce that came in the meal. If you're not a fan of lime juice and fish sauce, you may want to use sparingly. However, I was thoroughly enjoying the sauce and when accompanied with a bit of the mustard greens, it toned down the sour aspect of the flavor profile. Overall, so delicious and I would love to find them again and enjoy more of their menu items!

Navigating Oahu's mobile food scene means knowing where to look. Khao and Papas is one of those…read moreitinerant food trucks with a constantly changing dynamic schedule, popping up in another place almost daily. Using Yelp's Mobile Food Trucks search will identify them but you need to use another app to actually find out where they are. I ran across them on a weekend in my neighborhood and stopped by. The food is a fusion of Peruvian and Laotian by husband-wife team, Juan Ching and Kim Thepsenavong. There is a long history of Japanese cuisine fusing with Peruvian - it's called Nikkei. But other Asian cuisines, especially Southeast Asian, also blend seamlessly with Peruvian staples. Think about the heavy use of pepper and spice in Laotian cuisine. You've been in restaurants where the heat scale is hot, Thai hot, and Laotian hot. Peppers were only introduced into Southeast Asia in the 16th century. Peru is one of the recognized birthplaces of peppers, with over 300 varieties and a 7,500 year history of cultivation. Peruvian Laotian fusion works when you do it right. I had a beef anticuchos skewers plate with Laotian accompaniments. The anticuchos had a nice smokey sweet dark color from aji panca paste. The rice was Laotian, with black and white grains of sticky rice. There was pickled Laotian som pak, a vinegar marinated mustard cabbage. A fine blended salsa-like jeow mak len, full of charred tomato smokiness, savory paedek fish sauce, garlic, shallot, bird's eye chiles, and lime, was terrific on top of the marinated beef. I hope I run into Khao and Papas again one day so I can try their grilled chicken. Until then, I have the memory of a fine take-out plate of Peruvian Laotian fusion comfort food.

The sauce is bomb! Call ahead, place your order, pick it up 30-45 minutes later. It's just a pick up to go kinda place. The lady who takes your order and is at the counter is the nicest person. We were worried about the long wait so checked out the website and put in a phone order. We ordered the yummy Pork Malunggay noodles and Ube with Shrimp and Garlic sauce! The pasta noodle texture is seriously on point! I would make the trip over and over again. Sooo good! Millie is the sweetest! She took our phone order and helped us from arrival to departure. Upon arrival, we let Millie know we phoned in our order, and wanted to pick out some cheesecakes and drinks Togo! Such hard decisions. We ended up with Ube and Lychee Cheesecakes and both were delicious! We love supporting small businesses! The ambiance is so welcoming! They were so busy and for such a small establishment, was pushing a lot out of this tiny space. No seating inside, small bench outside so please be ware. Many were eating in their vehicles! Can't wait to come back!

Found them at the former Chi-Chans Okazuya location at Kaneohe. It's for takeout, no tables inside…read more They do have a nice selection of comfort food like pancit, pork or chicken adobo, dinuguan, pork guisantes, lumpia, and desserts as well. They also have packaged snacks they sell too. Greeted immediately by the guys behind the counter, my daughter and I already knew what we wanted, so we got the fried rice adobo, pork adobo and pancit to go. When I say comfort food, after one bite I was brought back to when I was little and my mom making these for us. I'm looking forward to going back and trying their other offerings. It's good to have a Filipino food spot in Kaneohe instead of driving all the way down to the Leeward side. Visit them and try it out for yourselves.

Thinking that there must be Good Grindz there, I made a U-turn and parked behind the truck. YumYum TumTum is usually in Waimanalo (by Bellows), but on Mondays, Thursdays, and Fridays, they're across from The Plaza at Kaneohe. Service is excellent. The two workers in the truck are very personable with the "aunties and uncles". They inform each customer about the ten to twelve minute wait-time since each order is made fresh! Because the Pancit was sold out (and the banana lumpia), I ordered the Garlic Rib Eye Steak... whoa... Da buggah was Beeg!!! I couldn't finish it! Made with the "secret special rub", the Garlic chips and onions were Broke da Mouth! The meat was tender and juicy! I enjoyed the koge edges of charred fat! Mmm! I should have ordered the BBQ chicken skewers, too... and the halohalo... welll... I'll just have to return... And go earlier before the Pancit runs out!!!

Whiskey Smoke 808 is the kind of local BBQ spot that has you planning your next visit before you…read moreleave. We waited about 10 minutes for a table and 20 minutes for our food, and it was worth it. The only downside was the AC being out, making it a little warm inside. Other than that, the service was fantastic. Our waitress went above and beyond, and I only wish I had gotten her name so I could recognize her. I ordered the two choice plate with brisket, BBQ chicken, BBQ baked beans, and potato mac salad. I was so ready to eat that I forgot to take pictures of everything because it smelled that good. The only photo I managed to get was the banana pudding. The brisket was moist and tender with a beautiful smoke ring, the chicken was flavorful, and the guava chili pepper sauce was incredible with the perfect balance of sweet and spicy (drizzle some into the potato mac). Definitely save room for the banana pudding. Our group spent about $100, and with enough leftovers for about six meals, it was an excellent value. The burnt ends were sold out, so I already have a reason to come back, along with the sausage.

We made the drive from town excited to finally give it a try. The food itself was actually pretty good. The brisket had great flavor, although about half of our pound serving was unfortunately just fat. The ribs were delicious, and the mac and cheese was definitely a standout. Unfortunately, the service completely overshadowed the meal. Our waitress got our order wrong a few times and a waiter that wasn't even helping us (brown hair and a beard) made us feel incredibly uncomfortable throughout our visit. He repeatedly glared at our table, shook his head, and gave us what felt like dirty looks. It created an awkward atmosphere that made it difficult to enjoy our meal. Overall, the service was disappointing from start to finish. Would I recommend it? If you're local to the area, yes--the food is worth trying. However, I'd recommend ordering takeout instead of dining in. We left thinking the meal could have been a much better experience if the service had matched the quality of the food.
