Keene Cafe, located in the small Kern county, CA town of Keene, is as "country" as it gets, as it's surrounded by majestic oak trees, hills, cattle ranches, and it's located at the western gate of the world famous Tehachapi Loop, which happens to be one of the "Railroad Wonders of the World." Yes, click on the hyperlink, as I've railfanned the Tehachapi Loop... Any visit to Keene would not be complete without a delicious meal at Keene Cafe... As you enter the restaurant, you'll notice the counter, and you'll realize that Keene Cafe is serious about breakfast, as breakfast is served anytime the restaurant is open on weekends, and until 1100 in the morning on weekdays. I noticed the mis-matched chairs and stools at the counter... I sat myself at the tall chair, as I was one of the few patrons on this early Saturday morning, as I walked in shortly after the restaurant opened for the day. I arrived shortly after the restaurant opened, and the dining room was sparsely seated, but by the time I was finished with my breakfast, the dining room had filled with locals and travelers from nearby state highway 58. It's interesting to note that many of the locals are ranchers, and both English and Spanish are equally spoken by staff and diners. It worked for me, as I'm comfortable in both languages. This fine restaurant is home to local cowboys, cowgirls, ranchers, truck drivers, law enforcement personnel, highway travelers, and anybody who appreciates fine, Kern county cuisine. From the breakfast "Sunrise at La Paz" section of the menu, I ordered "Chorizo and Eggs." The menu describes this fine cuisine simply as "Mexican chorizo scrambled with eggs," and I describe it as delicious. For starters, you get a LOT of breakfast for your $8,99... along with a few added extras, including the in-house made fresh salsa, which is absolutely AMAZING and which probably helps to define this fine plate as a true breakfast gem. Alright, you get choice, scrambled with eggs, which always works, and in the case of this fine diner, makes for an amazing entree. On the side, you'll enjoy perfectly fried, seasoned, and cut into cubes, homestyle potatoes, complete with diced pepper and red onion. Adding to the goodness is a side of refried beans, topped with shredded Mexican cheese. On the side, you get a stack of warm, fresh-from-the-griddle corn tortillas, which really add to the delicious breakfast. Did I mention the fresh salsa? You get the idea: Keene Cafe serves an outstanding breakfast! Alright partner, "cowboy" or "cowgirl" up, and enjoy an amazing meal at Keene Cafe. The food is delicious, the prices are unbelievably low, the staff and diners are friendly, and the atmosphere is as "country" as it gets. We get breakfast here when visiting family in the area. The building looks like something you'd see on the open range somewhere in the old west. Inside service is great, very good food. What a fantastic surprise! I'm visiting my son and his wife in Bodfish and we went out for a sightseeing drive and were on our way to the Tehachapi Loop and saw the cafe and decided to stop in. I'm a long time backroad traveler and I just knew this would be good and it did not disappoint one bit. I had the Keene omelette (tri-tip, grilled onion, avocado) and it's the best omelette I've had in years. The home fries were great, cooked perfectly and seasoned all the way through, a real treat. My son and his wife were equally impressed with their meals too and said they would definitely be back. The whole menu looked great! read more

I can't believe nobody has reviewed this yet. It's a nice little restaurant in Keene. I believe it is a frequent lunch stop of truckers, bikers, locals, and people working in the area. The staff is friendly and their food is pretty good. I had the Mexican style chicken caesar salad yesterday, even though they use pre made dressing, It was pretty good. The chicken was cooked well and had nice flavor, the lettuce was fresh and crisp, and I really liked the fresh fried tortilla strips on top. The fish tacos are pretty good, way over filled though. They make their own salsa there and it's really good. Their menu has the country diner basics, breakfast, burgers, steaks. but, they also have a lot of Mexican influenced dishes like carne asada tacos, taco salad, or burritos. I would assume because all the cooks I saw were Mexican. It's a good stop if you're hungry way out here on 58. read more

Stopped by on our way down from Tehachapi. I had never been to this little shop, but figured I'd check it out out of curiosity and for some historical value! When we walked up,noticed a B rating from health department. Went in to find a very clean place and friendly waitress, not sure as to the rating. Finally tried the historic Keene Cafe last weekend while visiting some of our cool local sites. The food was very good, service was spot on and fast. In way back from Bakersfield to Tehachapi we felt the need to revisit this iconic old timey cafe. In a small valley off the 58 by the Tehachapi Loop (look it up, very cool) this place screams biker stop, hungry travelers and truckers rest stop. Not much to look at but the menu is full of yummy choices from breakfast to dinner. I had hash and eggs, very good, large portion, reasonable price. Right brain had the Denver omelet, super good! I enjoyed my breakfast here today with my family. We are here visiting for Father's Day and my dad wanted us to have breakfast at this historic place. I really enjoyed knowing that during world war 2 this place is where many soldiers ate their breakfast and lunch on break from guarding the trains . That's super cool. We stopped here on our way to the Cesar Chavez monument. If you don't stop in Tehachapi or Bakersfield (depending on where you are coming from, there are not a lot of food options before you get the monument. Keene Cafe is one, if not the only option. With that said, it is a very typical road side stop with "a little bit of everything" menu. I ordered a hamburger with a side of fruit. The outside of the diner looks like its straight out of a Western movie. It's actually very cool. I was expecting the inside to mirror the outside however, it was all vinyl with replaceable tables and chairs. There is no bathroom in the actual cafe. To access the restroom you will need grab a key from inside the cafe to get into the restroom in another building. read more

Worst service I've ever experienced. This is our second time visiting this cafe. First experience wasn't as bad as the second. First time, waitress got upset we moved two tables together. Family of 7. Understood. We apologized. Food was good. Second visit, same amount of people. We were the first to enter. We were greeted and asked to wait til the waitress cleared a big family that had just left. Two more groups came after us. The second group was seated before us, ok, maybe because there were only 3. Then while we waited the third group, older lady seemed inpatient, and kept mentioning they were a group of four. The waitress apologized for waiting so long, we were fine. Then she seated the third group. Instead making them wait and say that they will be seated after the first group was seated. Worst dining experience in my life. It felt like locals came first. This cafe looks boring and unassuming from the outside, but don't let its looks fool you. The food is bomb! I have been here twice now with family who are locals, and so far the food hasn't disappointed us. Today we went for lunch, and I tried the House Sandwich, which is tri tip with sweet grilled onions and Monterrey Jack cheese on grilled sourdough. It was delicious! I had ranch fries as my side dish, which were hot and fresh and crispy and just amazing. 10/10 meal (coming from someone who does not eat tri tip often). The breakfast burrito my fiancé got was delicious too (at least from the bite I tried of it). The staff are always friendly and accommodating, and the food tastes home-cooked and fresh. Beautiful place to pull off and have a delicious meal. Abundant flavors and generous portions is the reward for pulling off for a hot, home-cooked style meal. We dined beneath the shady on one of the picnic tables but we also could have just taken our meals into our trailer. There is a large parking lot with plenty of turn-around for an easy-on, easy-off experience and walking the dig.
