It was my first time, though I'd heard great things, so we tried the lunch special: roasted chicken with wild rice, steamed vegetables, and a bread roll. Everything was delicious, and the portions were generous--I even had enough to take home and share with my husband. For dessert, I had the bread pudding, which my friend swore was the best around, and she was absolutely right! While the setting is more cafeteria-style, the food is outstanding--hearty, flavorful, and reasonably priced. Went to Kentucky with my husband and in-laws for whiskey tours and Keeneland was the first stop he hit for breakfast. It's very unique, as there is a cafeteria on a horse track. Don't be fooled by the quick serve aesthetic. I absolutely loved the atmosphere, especially being able to watch race horses train, but even better- the food was amazing. This is the Track Kitchen if you're a race fan this is where you may run into your favorite trainer. This is breakfast for the the workers right off the track The groomers, trainers, ect.. the barns are right out the doors. It's open to the public and the breakfast is cheap and good. It's kind of cafeteria style. Everyone was super friendly and the biscuits and gravy very good. Pancakes looked amazing. It was really cool, nothing fancy, but a must. Great spot for breakfast in Lexington. Reminds me of a school cafeteria but the food is great! Check online for their seasonal hours. Go to the front of the cafeteria style buffet line and order. You will get a ticket and pay at the cash register. There is a breakfast special with all the fixings. Or you can order a specialty item and they will make it in the back for you/yell your number when ready. Really enjoyed the French toast & the bacon, egg, & cheese burrito. Went to the Track Kitchen on Saturday morning while the heavens had opened up and it was raining cats n dogs. It was just the right place to be due to Keeneland's lush greenery. It's a basic cafeteria style outfit... don't expect too much. Ample space to sit.. very old furniture but stable enough to balance. Set menu. We ordered the following: - Egg n cheese sandwich on white: 3/5 - Pancakes (half stack = 2): 2.5/5 (they were too thick n dense which my friends seemed to enjoy but I did not, though I did like the crispy top) - Gravy n biscuits: 2.5/5 (pretty basic) - Bacon: 2/5 (my friend said it wasn't crispy enough) - Coffee: 1/5 - Cappuccino: 0.5/5 So the food was so-so... not bad.. it was "hearty" and "filling", which is what you'd expect from that sort of an establishment. But i must say it was economical! All of the above came under $15!! Would I go there again? Probably not. Would I take out-of-town folks there for an "experience"? Probably. read more

While vacationing in Frankfort, my brother suggested we head over to Keeneland Track Kitchen. I wasn't sure what to expect, but I'm always game for new things so I was surprised to find an incredibly beautiful track and literally a track kitchen where the jockeys eat. I got the breakfast special for $6.50 that consisted of scrambled eggs, bacon, a delicious biscuit and gravy, fried potatoes and coffee. It was huge. And, $6.50!! We were amazed at all of the trailers and horses, but soon found out we had come at a very busy time: Keeneland's November Breeding Stock Sale, a prestigious auction of highly prized broodmares, prospects and royally-bred weanlings. If you're lucky enough to catch a day when fried chicken is the lunch special, get it. Any two pieces you want with two sides and a roll. I had hoped for mashed potatoes, but they were roasted, and the green beans had almonds. I took the order to go. For me, it's two meals. We really had a great time! I had ordered the tickets the minute that they went on sale. The people were so nice and showed us directly to our seats. I just love Keeland and it had been so long since I had been there and it brought back so many great memories. It's a track kitchen so not intended to be haute cuisine, but according to one of the workout jockeys that we met this is the 2nd Best Track Kitchen in the country! Cafeteria style ordering and the typical breakfast foods were good. Scrambled eggs appeared to be from a mix so I'll order fried eggs next time and accept the wait in line that will follow. The staff were all pleasant and friendly. If you're a Thoroughbred Racing fan it is a fun way to mingle with jockeys, owners, stable hands, and locals before or after watching the horses' morning workouts. read more

It appears like any cafeteria, however the food quality is right up there with the nicest private dining rooms of keeneland during racing season, because it's the same chef and staff. That being said, the prices are below what you would pay at waffle house. We ordered a breakfast special with traditional country ham, 2 eggs over easy, biscuits and gravy, and fried potatoes for $10. A massive breakfast burrito with eggs cheese peppers and onions with bacon or sausage which would cost $13-$15 at any other restaurant in town costs $4.50 at the Track Kitchen. They have floor to ceiling windows so you can see some trees on one side or the barns on the other side. It's truly a hidden gem. read more

This is a very casual place to eat but food is good and it's fascinating to eat here as owners and lots of horse people eat here.

The kitchen is somewhat of a tradition for me and convenient when you're on the backside. It's stunningly located next to horse barns and gorgeous views of Kentucky horse country. The track kitchen is where the backside workers, trainers and other horsey people grab a bite and you may also place bets there. The food is good, basically a steam table with basic staples such as Mac n cheese, sandwiches, hot food that varies. Old schoolers like me are sad they no longer offer the famous corned beef which is a loss for sure but you can still find it in the grandstand. The hours here used to be longer, so you need to check before you go. It's typically open earlier in the morning during the meet. This is also a good place to pop into if you need the restroom! A lot of folks meet in this area in the parking lot after the races to chat or have a drink l from your cooler in the car. Check it out to hang with the horsey insiders. Cheap and unique. read more

It is nestled toward the back past the barns so it is a good distance from the entrance but it is so worth the walk. You will see many interesting sights as you walk through the barns toward the Track Kitchen. When you arrive there may be one or two dining rooms open depending upon the time of day and the number if stakes races on the card. The Track Kitchen is super organized and handles a major crowd effortlessly. The style is truly Southern comfort food. The portions are large. The prices are reasonable. Never mind the purely functional environment of the room and the solid yet unmemorable food, it was the people watching that made the Track Kitchen a stellar place to eat breakfast. The dining room was filled with all sorts of interesting looking people, from stately gentlemen in official looking green blazers to stable hands who left clumps of dirt from their boots on the floor. About three-quarters of the customers were intently studying the day's racing form, more interested in odds and previous times than the fact that their breakfast was getting cold. Trainers, owners, exercise jockeys, track officials, security personnel, and gambling addicts were all gathered under one roof. It seemed everyone associated with Keeneland was there except the horses. I'm sure I could have picked up some "hot tips" but we weren't staying for the afternoon races. I ordered oatmeal, the first time that had happened during my Breakfast Tour of the 48 continental states. I figured this was a good place to have oatmeal since we were surrounded by hundreds of horses and what do they eat? Subsequent research revealed that horses no longer eat straight oats like at one time when they were the staple of any horse's diet. Evidently, today's horse eats a much more balanced diet that may contain some oats. To balance my diet I also ordered an egg, bacon, and cheese sandwich. The oatmeal came with a small plastic container of raisins, and a similar container of brown sugar. I poured the contents of the containers into the oatmeal and went at it as my sandwich had not yet arrived. The oatmeal didn't bowl me over. It was too watery for my tastes and in fact, didn't taste too different than the instant variety. The egg, bacon, and cheese sandwich on the other hand, was excellent. The egg was especially outstanding. Perfectly grilled, (in butter or bacon grease perhaps?), it tasted fresh and delectable. No nags working here. After you grabbed your tray and moved a few feet down the line, you ended up facing a couple of women with big smiles on their faces. They sincerely looked happy to see you. How could anyone look this cheerful at this hour of the morning? You placed your order with one of them and they pleasantly explained where to get your coffee and that someone would bring you your breakfast sandwich. The cashier was no less amicable. I had purchased a container of juice which I had planned on taking with me and drinking later in the day. About 15 minutes after I left the Track Kitchen, I remembered that I had left the juice on the table. I went back, but the table had been cleared. You don't go to the track kitchen just for the food, you go for the entire experience. There are few places in town where you can get an entire throw-down home cooked breakfast for this cheap all while eating breakfast next to jockeys, owners, and Keeneland staff. Go early in the morning and watch the horses workout on the track and then walk over for breakfast. Bacon, eggs, pancakes, biscuits and gravy, bacon, and bacon. One of my favorite parts of coming home is visiting here. Driving to Keeneland early, I think that the view of the sun coming up over horse farms is truly beautiful. Everywhere on the walls of the kitchen and surrounding areas is pictures of horses, testament to the rich history of the place. The Southern-style breakfast is excellent and really well priced. And it's kind of cool to eat with the jockies. Afterwards, you can head to the track and watch the horses work out. We happened to run into trainer Steve Asmussen when we were there. read more

This isn't intended to be the fine dining because this is the back side of the track, the working a side of the track, and probably the best side of the track.
