The price was perfect, just right for a single orchid plant potted with green foliage, moss and a decorative butterfly in an elegant ceramic pot. Inside of Palolo Valley you will find this hidden gem of an orchid farm. They have a wide variety of common to very rare orchids. Right from the start after you park your car you will find an assortment of orchids that love being out in the sun. You will also find lots of different air plants as well. In the covered area or showroom area, you will see orchids that are in bloom. The prices are what you would see from other places... some higher and some lower. The staff while very knowledgeable, they can at times be standoffish like you are bothering them. Maybe they were busy but they can improve on customer service. They offer shipping to other states, which is nice if you wanted to send as a gift or for a friend who collects orchids. What some might not know, is Kawamoto used to compete in the mainland in orchid shows. Yup you have to be on top of your game if you fly your orchids to the mainland to compete. Came here last week and although the orchids and plants are BEAUTIFUL, the customer service is horrible. My family and I stopped by to pick out an orchid for my Aunty who just had surgery. Upon entering, we all greeted the man at the counter with a hello or good morning and the man said nothing at all. Didn't even acknowledge us. We tried asking him a couple of questions about orchid care and he gave us short answers while barely looking our way. We felt like a nuisance and did not feel welcomed at all. Orchids and air plants ... if you're in search of either on Oahu, this is the place! Located deep in Palolo, the nursery is has different levels and the lower ones can be steep to get to but the main level has more than enough plants to suit most needs. Prices are extremely reasonable compared to what you see at the big box home goods stores or even other commercial nurseries - $2-$3 for Tillandsia that typically go for $7-$8 elsewhere, for instance. The orchids, however, are the show stoppers and it's worth the drive just to see the many flowering varieties they have. I didn't realize orchids can be fragrant until I stepped inside their showroom! In addition to the many potted varieties, they also sell many types of hanging varieties. Decided to try out this place after researching nurseries that were certified so we could bring home some unique orchids to the mainland. Although this place has TONs of different orchids, there was smaller bunch of orchids that were actually flowering. Perhaps there were about 30ish different kinds of orchids in their main greenhouse that were selling orchids with flowers? There were some unusual orchids that I had never seen before with smaller varieties of orchids. BROWSING THEIR WEBSITE: Apparently, they have descriptions online of orchids they sell and ship that indicate what are the most unusual collector orchids. But i wasn't aware w of it at the time and I believe there weren't any that were being displayed and flowering at the time. But had I known, I would have asked to see them. OUR PURCHASE: Ends up that I didn't buy any super unusual ones but I'm glad I got some that appear to be hearty. We had to catch a flight the same day, otherwise we would have loved to stay much longer and look at all the varieties. Apart from the ones that are flowering they have a HUGE array of non flowering orchids in the other outdoor areas. And they have a huge section of air plants outside. I only wish I had more time to look through them! We ended up buying 3 healthy orchids ($20 each) and 2 air-plants. Costs of the orchids are $15 and up and most of them are about $20. If you are going to the mainland, they can either ship it for you or you can pay $20 for them to certify and pack it all in a box to hand carry on the plane. One of my orchids already has new shoots that are growing from the branch/stem just a few days after arriving on the mainland. And the one with small flowers uniquely and delightfully smells of baby powder! So happy with my purchase and I hope they won't die on me in the colder mainland weather. It all kind of added up in costs especially w the packing fee, but it was one of my most favorite "souvenirs" from hawaii. THE PACKAGING: Of special note is the packing!! Don't be afraid to buy and bring onboard to take home! Packaging is absolutely top notch! Compared to another very well known orchid nursery we went to in Kona, this place did a superb job of packing! The other place charged about the same to pack and threw it all in a make shift carrier made out of coke can boxes with no padded protection at all for my beautiful plants. But here, they use high quality waxed crepe paper and sheets of soft cottony material around the leaves and flowers and then wrapped in newspaper and then taped securely to the box (!!) to ensure that the plants are protected during travel. There was not a single flower, branch, or leaf that was destroyed on transport! Absolutely amazing w peace of mind that my beautiful orchids would make it home safely on the rough transport. They really know what they are doing! If you're in Honolulu this is a great place to buy orchids to take home. read more

I have wanted a popcorn orchid for the longest time so for my birthday my kids tracked down Kawamoto's Orchid Nursery. They called were told yes they had several so we took a drive to the back of Pālolo Valley. Luckily there are a few signs as you near the place but watch for a fairly steep turn to your left. What an amazing place filled with so many orchids! They have a showroom/main shop filled with flowering orchids but you can wander through several greenhouses too where chickens and roosters roam about. I got my popcorn orchid but added another stunning red I've never seen before. The popcorn orchid was not pricey maybe $20 and the blooms lasted a month. They red one was one of their specialties and much pricier so I bought one not yet in bloom since it was cheaper and waited for it to bloom. Kawamoto's seems to be a family business that's been around for a long time. The love and care they give their plants show. I've been back again since now I want to have a blooming orchid in my house all the time! read more

Omg this place is huge. So many kinds of plants with reasonable price. I came here for air plants. Usually it's $5.95 at some big store but here is around $3. All air plants price range is $2-$15. I got 5 and it was $18. They have some pots and woods for air plants.( I Forgot to take a picture). This place has clean air, quiet and so blessed! the place was gorgeous they had tons of orchids and other ornamental plants. the reason I give it a 1 star is that the service is absolutely horrible. I had a school project to do and when I asked an employee for help he looked at me like I was crazy and told me that they don't do teachings here. I further explained that I wasn't interested in that and just wanted basic information on their setup and he still shut me down. Made no effort to help me at all. I went looking for a gift, but could have spent all day just looking around! Every time I thought I saw everything, I'd turn a corner and see more. There's all kinds of orchids and antheriums, air plants and greenery. They are located deep in Palolo, but if you follow the "orchids" signs, it's super easy to find! Went to Safeway and other florists first......$250-$300....no thanks. Didn't want to drive all the way up palolo...was being lazy...it's only about 15 min away from where I live. Well, I'm glad that I went because they have the best orchids and the best prices. The lady with the short bob haircut was there to help me and as always she was super helpful and super friendly. Walked away with 3 orchids, 2 pots and and some Pele's hair for around $100. Be aware of this nursery, orchid plants purchased here are not guarantee after payment. I purchased 5 orchid plants from this nursery to be shipped back home to the mainland. Upon receiving and unboxing those plants, 3 out of 5 plants were almost dead with brown leaves and dead buds. I called the nursery immediately and explained my situation to the male owner and he said sorry nothing he can do for me. I paid $185 dollars plus shipping fees $75 for next day shipping and they're dead!! I believe the main reason was he sold unestablished plants, roots are not mature enough to be sold to customers. I think this business just wanted to get money out of your pockets so fast that they're willing to take the risks of selling unestablished plants with immature roots. This practice is so bad for the business. Will never buy or trust this business again! read more

I'd been wanting to check out this place for a while, and so glad I did. The nursery is tucked deep in Palolo Valley--just keep following the posted "Orchid" signs. The driveway down can be a little steep, but parking is readily available. The main greenhouse in front has a great selection of their best orchids and air plants, as well as a variety of ceramic pots. You're also free to roam around and admire the nursery's three acres, which makes for a great little adventure in and of itself. Just make sure to watch your step--don't get *so* distracted by the plants that you accidentally get too close to a mother hen's chicks (speaking from personal experience)! I ended up picking up one of these gorgeous tillandsia xerographicas for $12 and a jewel orchid for $20. On the pricier side for my budget, but so far these plants seem very healthy and well worth it. read more

If you're an orchid enthusiast like me, there should be one name that automatically pops up when you need your orchid fix, Kawamoto. They may be a little hard to find, but don't let that stop you from venturing out to Palolo Valley. Head Mauka on 10th Av until you come to the fork with Waiomao Road. Follow the signs along Waiomao Road until you reach the nursery which will be on your left. Go down the driveway and you're there! First thing you'll notice, if they're in bloom, are the Red Dragons. They have a wonderful, huge collection of them, the biggest I've ever seen! Over the years, I've bought several "Reds" from them and they are magnificent specimens to have in your collection!! They have many different sizes to choose from, but if you aren't sure which one to get, just ask. The showroom is a must, there are many different varieties of orchids and although some are not for sale, they are very interesting to look at. I love wandering through the hothouses and choosing plants for my collection. In my personal collection, I have a lot of common plants, but I've been adding more exotic plants recently. You can find stuff at the orchid shows, but in my opinion you will find the more exotic plants at the nursery. Kawamoto Nursery also has a staff that is very knowledgeable and they are always very happy to help you with any questions you may have. Carol and her crew are so super nice! Title and header of today's rating = ORCHID SNOBBERY I deleted my 5-star rating for Kawamoto that I wrote last year. I don't like the update format in Yelp very much. Since the 5-star rating last year, I've come back to visit Kawamoto several times, most recently today. I detest snobs of all sorts....wine snobs, private-school snobs, brand-name clothing snobs and yes, even orchid snobs. Most times at Kawamoto, I don't get snobbery and rudeness and I normally deal with the men of the family. The past two times I've visited (last month and today), I've dealt with an older Japanese lady, she looks like she's in her mid-60's. Last time she was a bit rough around the edges but obviously had her happy pills. Not today! Normally I walk away with something, anything, even if Kawamoto is on the pricier side because of fan loyalty but today I left without buying a thing. I asked the lady if she sold a certain type of plant and her response was "No no no no!" Geeze. Let me turn up my hearing aid and the part of my brain that understands the word "no" the first time, because apparently it ain't working. She told me to look around and off I went, to the row of orchids I visited last month. I picked up a lovely dendrobium species that my neighbor wanted, so I was here today to pick up another one. Orchid No No Lady came down into the greenhouse where I was, and I asked her how much were the two specimens in my hand as she was a few rows away. She said, "I don't know, I got to look at them" then turned her back to me. I told Orchid No No that I was here to buy more orchids, this time for my neighbor. She told me the things I had in my hand were "species" orchids and expensive and that no other orchid nursery on the island had the same selection they had. She told me to check Ebay because that's where they did 80% of their business and I should go look up the flowers online . I was thinking, Now why would I do that? I am here in person, so sell me the damned orchids, already! Maybe that was her way of bragging. Orchid No No proceeded to tell me that these were not orchids for beginners....now how does she know that my neighbor or myself are Orchid Beginners? She was very reluctant to sell them to me and raised the price up $5 more a piece than they were last month. Little does Orchid No No know (ha ha ha) that I have actually read the book The Orchid Thief, frequent all the orchid shows, know my Grams from my Phrags, Paphs, Phals and also their going prices,; researched cloning, culture and flasking of orchids and belong to several snobby orchid boards (I am not one of them I swear). Being the stupid Orchid Beginner that I was, I decided at one last crap shot at being nice to Orchid No No Lady because I was hoping she'd be nice to me so I wouldn't have to ditch Kawamoto. I offered to donate a systemic fungicide that I paid big bucks for and told her so - I couldn't justify using such a powerful fungicide in a non-commercial setting, besides, I didn't want to dispose of it. I believe you need to to take it to a special waste facility as it will contaminate ground water. If anyone could use it, it was an orchid nursery, and Kawamoto WAS my favorite. What does Orchid No No Lady snidely say to me? "Where did you get it from, Home Depot?" Screw you guys. Adios, Kawamoto. Been nice shoving money into your family business until Dragon Lady showed up.
