Some of that can be overshadowed a bit by the rather surly woman who works at the desk. I do feel bad for her as I'm sure it's not an easy job to do but it can definitely dampen the experience. Beyond the staff and volunteers, the shelter itself is depressing as hell. The two rows of kennels that face each other in the middle are intimidating to walk down and the dogs really seem to trigger each other, very stressful environment. The building needs a HUGE makeover. Also, It smells awful, even when you first walk in. I understand there are animals there but the whole lobby doesn't need to smell like urine and various other unidentifiable smells. It doesn't even smell that bad where the dogs are contained, why so gross out front? Anyway, I'd give five stars because I love our dogs so much and would def support from them again but had to take off a couple of stars because the building itself and overall mood is quite abysmal. It seemed there have been efforts lately to change that but they've got a loooong road ahead of them.

I see there have been some negative reviews- know that they are operating with volunteers and are very low-budget. With that said, the volunteers I worked with were very nice and doing their "job." They want to know that you will will provide a loving and safe home before adopting. You will be "screened" and need to wait a few days before taking your new kitty home. There is also an adoption fee, they need to cover costs. The sweet cat we adopted was in a foster home and clearly very well-cared for. She was socialized with other pets and the owner gave her lots of attention. We are so happy with our new kitty, Phoebe Katz, THANK YOU!

I honestly don't know why anyone would give this place a good review. After no one responded to my…read moreon line application I went in person. They had me fill out a written application. Then I got to see the cats. The cat I was interested in was listed as gentle and loving. The gentleman who came to get her out of her cage had to call another staff to help him because he said she was "difficult". They let you interact with the cat you choose in a small room in the back. The room was crowded with random furniture and generally unpleasant. I understand that cats can be really nervous with strangers but there was no way to tell what her temperament might be in these surroundings. They offered to have the foster call me to talk more about her. Again, no call, no response. I'm guessing some of the people in there were probably volunteers but they didn't seem to know much about the cats in there (or much about cats in general). All in all it was a really disappointing experience. I ended up adopting from another agency.

I am 21 and have been looking to adopt from there for a while. I adore cats and know a lot about caring for them and am really passionate about them. It has been a really unnecessarily long process trying to adopt from there and not a pleasant one, it has grown tiring since I am ready to give a cat a loving forever home now and have been for a long time. The director there, when she actually answers her phone, doesn't take me seriously and doesn't listen to me and what I have to say and insists on speaking to my mother every time, who won't even be a part of caring for the cat and knows nothing about cats, unlike me. She needs to have my mom adopt the cat, it can't be me and she even called me "challenged" (I have never met this woman) while speaking to my mother. I will be the one caring for the cat, feeding the cat, playing with the cat, I bought everything the cat needs (food, window perch, activity tower, toys, beds, litter box, litter etc.) and will for its entire life and study cats daily and know everything about them and how to care for them and hope to work with them my whole life and open up my own cat shelter in the far future yet my extremely busy mother who never has time and basically works 24/7 and doesn't even have a car at the moment is the only person they can talk to and the only person who can adopt her just so the cat can be brought home and spend all its time with me. Absolutely ridiculous and unnecessarily strict and I was treated with 0 respect. I'll be adopting elsewhere, where I, the person who will be taking care of the cat, can adopt and be taken seriously and am sad that the cat won't be living the life of spoiled luxury with me and wish her the best and hope she finds a nice forever home. Also, with all of the open hours I feel like the cats should be getting more one on one play time to help some of the more shy/fearful/aggressive cats. Most of the time it feels like these cats are just being watched during open hours and not played with/interacted with. On the plus side, everybody else I've talked to has been great and the cats at the shelter get a decent amount of space to walk around, play and relax during open hours. They are very generous when it comes to their adoption fee of $100 which includes all shots and spaying and neutering which comes out to being much more expensive. I really respect and agree with their views on cats being indoor only and only adopting to people who plan to abide by this. Them being open to everybody during the weekend as opposed to appointment only during the week lets the cats there get lots of attention, which is really good for them. But they don't seem to want these cats adopted out and don't care how knowledgeable you are with cats and how much love and care and attention you will give to them so unless they change their ways I would go elsewhere to a place with better management.

The shelter is run by caring, loving people who volunteer hours of time to care for the cats.read more

Animal advocates watched them back a van in to "take the dog for medical help" while numerous Rochester PD stood guard on the property. However, it was later learned that they never removed the dog- it was all a staged game. Lollypop takes in thousands and thousands of dollars- pays their board of directors massive salaries and continues to abuse and mistreat animals. STOP SUPPORTING THIS TRAIN WRECK!! Since losing him, they've been struggling with loneliness and depression, realizing just how much joy and companionship their dog brought into their lives. They were genuinely excited to adopt up to one year old and went to the shelter ready to give another animal a loving home. Instead, they were told by the woman running the location that they were "too old" to adopt a kitten and should only consider an older cat. My mother explained that several family members would gladly take care of the cat if anything ever happened to them. Despite that, the woman responded, "I've made a decision and the answer is no," and told them to leave. We understand shelters have adoption policies and want the best for their animals, but the lack of compassion, empathy, and respect shown to my grieving parents was heartbreaking and unacceptable. Nobody deserves to be treated that way, especially after coming in with love, good intentions, and a willingness to provide a safe home to an animal in need.
