I was a bit skeptical to try this Kelly's since the reviews were less than stellar & the last time I ate at the Laskin location it was pretty bad. However, it's close to home & my dude & I wanted to check out a spot to grab a quick beer between errand running. They must have quit letting people smoke in the place like previous reviews at stated. There were no ashtrays or hints of smoking. It's very clean/new inside with perfect viewing off all the tvs they have. We sat at the bar & were psyched to see they carried El Guapo on tap. The bartenders were very friendly & the crowd around the bar was cool too. We decided to stop in for dinner one night & it was delicious. I had the Ponderosa burger with their fresh cut fries. It was super yummy. My fiance ordered the Grid Iron burger with onion rings. We were both pleased with our meal. We went again this past Sunday to watch some football & were blown away with their happy hour specials. On NFL Sundays they have select appetizers that are 1/2 off the already reduced happy hour price! Between the 3 of us we all enjoyed beers, spinach dip, nachos, bacon & cheese fries, and my favorite, the chicken quesadilla. Surprised at the reviews, my experience today was great. It was a bit slow for a Friday afternoon but service and food on par with my past Kellys experiences. We had high hopes for Kelly's Tavern (a new addition to the shops at the corner of Haygood & Independence). My boyfriend and I went tonight for the first time and are sad to say we were disappointed. The good: Very nice decor (laminate wood flooring, glossy furniture, nice lighting) and many TV's all make for a good sports bar atmosphere; there isn't any other sports bar in the immediate area. Beer was cold and there were several local brews on tap. Waitress was friendly but overworked. The bad: SMOKE!! The entire inside bar/restaurant area is "smoking" (small perimeter area is non-smoking). Even though it's a new restaurant, the smoke smell is strong to the point of not being able to eat comfortably. We were going to stay for coffee & dessert but the smoke was too bad. FOOD. The food is not that great. Not awful, but not great. Watery French-onion soup and (canned?) she-crab soup that was very thin. Salads OK. This would be a MUCH better bar if it didn't allow smoking. I still miss the old Kelly's at Pembroke Mall. Something about the dark green sticky carpets and lingering smoke in the air that made everything so much better. But alas, it's gone and the new one at Haygood is open. I've never had a bad experience here and the food is always spot on. I really love the crab dip...get the crap dip...it's so gooooood! Nice and hot and crabby and full of old bay and man...served with warm pita bread triangles! Get it! You can't go wrong with their burgers either, the french dip, and the grilled reuben. So if everything is so good, why 3 stars. Well, I really don't like how the place is set up. When it first opened the bar area allowed smoking so there are glass walls separating the bar area and the outer edge seating area that is non-smoking. Ok, thanks for separating that, but all the TVS (like a billion of them) are in the bar area and it looks like so much fun in there, but I'm sitting on the edge of the restaurant because I don't smoke and honestly, don't care to sit near the smoking but I want to have fun too!! My friend & I wanted a drink & kellys was close so we came here. The place is a decent size but there wasn't many people there. Full bar. We both ordered a drink & appetizer. The food could be much much better but it's do able just to have something to snack on. It seems like all the locals come here. Most people seemed to know the bartenders& waitresses& other people there which was cool since I'm brand new to Virginia. If I want a drink this will be my go to place. read more

The food was great our waitress Amy, was NOT. We stopped in on a Wednesday night at 6:40. We waited 10 minutes to get seated and then another 20 to order our food. The place was dead; there was no reason for the wait. The food was pretty great! My burger was a tad over cooked but still delicious and I could have made a meal out of the caesar salad I ordered! Husbands burger and salad filled him up. The grilled cheese was a hit with the kids even with a picky eater. Our waitress put the food down and we didn't see her again until I asked for a box and check. Such high hopes for this based on someone's recommendation. I wanted a greasy medium rare burger full of juice. What I got instead overcooked well done dry burger. They didn't even add the Mayo that was supposed to be on my burger. The fried pickles and onion rings were just as bad. They were obviously cooked in over used oil. So both tasted like old grease. I'm a regular at this Kelly's and I usually don't have any major issues..The service is usually mediocre at best. Today was different and very disappointing. When we arrived the hostess sat us in a section that we could watch the games we wanted but she had to change the tv to the correct channels.. After asking her 3 times and her numerous excuses we finally got someone else to change the channel. We ordered appetizers and we were finished eating them before the waitress came back to take the meal order. Once the food came all was well until I dipped my fry in the ranch and ended up with not only the fry in my mouth but also a piece of hard plastic about a inch long and wide. I may have come from a top or something. I notified the waitress who said she would let the manager know. Well next thing I know the check arrived and we paid and nothing was said. As we sat around we saw the manager who we called over and advised her of the incident. She apologized and stated she didn't know what it was. She did offer dessert. Just finished lunch here at Tavern. Either I was hungry or my lunch was tht good. I enjoyed every last bite. My hubby ordered the Flamethrower burger and I ordered the chicken Caesar wrap with sweet potatoe fries. Food was served hot and my favorite were the sweet potato fries. Restrooms were clean and the service was great. We were greeted upon arrival and seated immediately. The next time were back in town we will defiantly patron Kelly's Tavern. read more

Why do we keep coming back? This was our conversation over lunch yesterday. We needed a quick bite to eat before running our afternoon errands. We walk into an empty hostess station. Leaving us at a loss for what to do. Seat ourselves, wait, leave? Wish we had gone with the latter. We were finally greeted and seated. I had the chicken chili w half a beef and cheddar sandwich. $11 This was the most carelessly made sandwich ever. The beef was dry and tasteless w a slice of tomato and romaine. No cheddar,no mayo. Nothing. I don't normally send things back... but, wanted this fixed. The chicken chili was lacking flavor as well, so needed sonething to eat. Here's the problem. I never saw an employee through the entire meal.drinks weren't filled, no "how is everything " straight up ghost town. I couldn't even find a server to pay the tab. We did some estimation left cash on the table. This might have been tolerable if the place was busy. The only thing worse than my food was the service. Definitely won't be back. read more

Had a reservation for a large party. The waiter wasn't the most friendly. Never asked to refill drinks or if we needed anything. He would hurry out of the room before we could ask him for another drink. When he brought us boxes for our leftovers, he left them on the booth behind us without saying anything. Brought all of our checks and placed all of them on the table next to us and walked away without handing them out or mentioning they were there. I've been here 3 times so far over the past few months, and I am quite pleased with it. The food is delicious! I've tried the fish and chips as well as the bacon and cheddar burger. I love that any of the burgers can be customized so easily as beef, turkey burger, a vegetarian option, and chicken breast. The first and third time I was there, the service was excellent. Both of these waiters were attentive and very friendly. However, I do have to say that our second visit had less than stellar service. I gave this place 4 stars simply because the service seems to be hit or miss. read more

Lunch with Mom is always a good thing, right? Hadn't been to this location and it was a pleasant surprise. Even though it was mid-afternoon and almost empty, the staff was still pleasant and attentive. I can't recall the burger's name that I had, but the taste was awesome. Mushrooms and onions sauteed in Heinz 57 before being slathered on the bacon cheeseburger. Cooked to a perfect medium, the burger was juicy without being a mess. Since I was with Mom, I even substituted Steamed broccoli instead of fries, and that was a surprise too. instead of being steamed to within an inch of losing it's green, this was blanched and still firm so it had some real flavor and crunch to it. If you're new to Kelly's, know that they specialize in their burgers. Don't expect world class salmon or lasagna from a place that specializes in burgers. read more

first off just want to say if you want to watch a game this is the place to be. The restaurant is very clean, and very nice. Their only down falls is the food. I did not care for it, I thought it was a cheap made product, but it is a bar so I understand they are not known for their food. Ugh! I was so disappointed with the Philly cheesesteak! I guess that's what I get for thinking a chain restaurant in Virginia can make a decent cheesesteak. My husband's hamburger was pretty tasty. If I come back, I'd definitely opt for the burger. The appreciate the fries being hand cut and fresh, BUT they were on the bland side. A little season salt or garlic powder wouldn't hurt. read more

Bumping this Kellys Tavern up a star! The service at this Kellys is spot in +1 everyone is super friendly and if you have an issue they fix it with a smile on their face. They have modified the layout the smoking area is now the patio and the full bar & restaurant are non smoking big plus. The number one plus is their Happy Hour 4-7 every day of the week with big discounts on drinks including craft beer and a selection of bar food that is filling and cheap when on a budget. Is any of the food 5 star review worthy no but it is tasty and filling and reliable when on a budget. A great value with a great staff! read more

We stopped in to try out this Kelly's, it hasn't been opened that long. The food was comparable to the other Kelly's in portion size and taste. The service is awful! Our server seemed calm when he took our order but listening to another server apologize to the table behind us for their food being late because the server got slammed suddenly with customers, I wondered how long our order would take. It was a wait. The slam meant there were 5 tables with customers, 3 were full when we arrived.The bar area seemed to have plenty of staff. Also one server was telling the other server she would be the only one closing because of changes in the schedule and they discussed how that was becoming the norm., lately. read more

I used to love this place. Several friends and I periodically would come in here to watch big games and play Birdie King. They have a nice array of TVs throughout the bar, so it's ideal for watching sports...or at least it used to be. Tonight is Game 7 of the World Series between Cubs and Indians; obviously a BIG game...and one that any respectable sports bar would want to promote and cater to. 80% of the clientele were clearly there to watch this game. And yet, when we politely asked the bartender to please turn on the audio so we could hear the game on the main speakers, she said "I'll see what I can do". You see, there was a jukebox in the corner playing club music. I bought a beer and asked for a menu. When she came back to take my order, I asked again "could you please turn on the game so we can all hear it? I don't want to order until I know I can watch and hear the game" (which had already started). She said that she couldn't turn the game on because the jukebox was on..and "people had already paid to hear their songs". She said there were 9 songs left. I suggested "just give them their $5 back and put the game on...it's the reason people are in here tonight." I offered to pay the $5...whatever it took to hear the game. This girl just didn't get it, and wouldn't make the (correct) decision to reimburse whoever for their Kanye songs so the rest of the bar could enjoy the World Series. (Did I mention this is a sports bar?) No dice. So I reluctantly asked to close out. She offered to pay for my one beer. I said "no, I want to pay for it". She said no, it's on the house. I thanked her and left....still pissed that my friends and I couldn't stay and enjoy Game 7 while eating and drinking beer--and without Usher blaring on the speakers instead of the big game! read more

My girl and I have been here several times and we've yet to have a competent waiter. Last night we walked in and waited to be seated but the hostess never showed up. After we seated ourselves our waiter showed up with menus. We ordered our drinks and about 10 minutes later I had to get up and pick up the drinks from the bar station myself. We did finally order food and it came out fairly quickly and tasted fine but my girl asked for Ranch dressing and it didn't show up for another 10 minutes. This has been fairly typical for our experiences here. Just awful service. One waitress took our drink order and never showed back up. We stopped another waiter about 15 minutes later and asked him to find her but he couldn't, so he just took over our table. I really want to like this bar. They have local brew on tap, they got rid of all the smoking, it's very close to my house, they have lots of TVs, but they just can't seem to get their stuff together. I don't want to wait 10 minutes for a beer in an empty bar, I don't want to get my own catchup, I don't want to walk past the hostess stand and ask the bartender if it's ok to just pick a table. So listen up Kelly's management. Train and supervise your waitstaff. Oh, and get some Irish food on the menu. read more
