I dislodged a temporary crown on a Saturday morning while visiting friends in SF. My friends called Dr. Fong, who graciously provided some instructions for me for the remainder of the weekend, and instructed me to call his office and inform them of the issue. The office called me first thing Monday morning, and saw me right away. They replaced the temporary and charged me very modestly for the service. Dr. Fong is good. His dental hygienist (Andrea) is THE BEST. If she ever left, I'd follow her in a heart beat. However, I refuse to go here any longer because his mother, who works at the front desk with scheduling, messed up my appointment. I was heavily pregnant and walked here (to get some exercise) for my appointment. The person I spoke with to get an appointment was his mother, Genevieve, who was also working when I walked in. She not only couldn't find the appointment, she didn't apologize or offer any kind of resolution except a reluctant "oh well". They obviously couldn't squeeze me in so I had leave. The service this old lady, who has no business working the front desk, except maybe to keep her busy, was appalling. I wasn't rude or anything but she acted like she was doing me a favor. She kept muttering to herself and wouldn't face me, instead, turned towards the computer and just completely ignored me. She is truly an awful person. I am very happy to have Dr Fong and his team as my go to for all my dental work. They are pros at what they do and I trust them to do all work, from cleanings to repairs on my teeth. In my experience, they do the work with diligence and care. Never cutting corners on the materials, tools, or methods used to save time or a buck. I am a patient since 2016. The level of professionalism and care is what make a loyal patient. Since the beginning of COVID i visited Dr. Fong clinic 3 times. Every thing was sanitized and the equipment was covered with plastic wraps to ensure that it is used as one time only. Strict COVID-19 preventative procedures were taken into place each time. Terrible experience. My wife had done an implant a few years ago, but the dentist who initially did it was an asshole and messed up her crown, so she had no crown and was left with an empty implant. Finally, after several years of discomfort and trying to find a suitable dentist, we found Dr. Fong through a recommendation and scheduled an appointment with him. Our first appointment was for Dr. Fong to examine my wife's teeth and tooth 14 (the tooth that needs a crown). He told us that my wife that the teeth below tooth 14 had "multiple cavities" that required filling and that she had another tooth that needed to be removed for a crown. My wife told him that none of her teeth hurt and that we didn't have enough money to "fix those teeth" anyway. She just wanted to get a crown for her existing implant. He said that that wasn't possible and that all problems have to be "fixed" along with fitting a crown for her existing implant. That concludes the first appointment. A month or two later, we called Dr. Fong's office again and we told them that my wife really needed a crown. They asked if we'd like to fulfill Dr. Fong's recommendations along with the crown. We said that we would like to have the crown done first. The recommendations could be done afterward. Dr. Fong agreed, and we began the crown fitting process. 4 weeks later, the crown arrived. My wife asked to see the crown. Dr. Fong's assistant allowed her to see the crown. It looked fine; the shape was fine and the crown was white with a bit of yellow tint, which matched her other teeth. It was partially installed until Dr. Fong said that he needed to polish it. After it was polished, a portion of it appeared to be filed down and seemed quite flat/was lacking the jaggedness of teeth, and it didn't have the natural-looking colorations on it anymore. It was quite smooth and was completely white. It didn't look like the teeth we were shown before at all. We had a feeling something was wrong. Dr. Fong hadn't screwed the crown in fully and told my wife to come back 2 weeks later for him to screw it in completely. We came back 2 weeks later and he screwed it on fully, but when we came home and my wife tried to chew food using the crown, she felt that the crown wasn't making contact with her lower teeth correctly. She tried to get used to this issue for three months. During these three months, she experienced jaw pain because of the crown whilst chewing. Later that month, we returned to Dr. Fong's office for a routine teeth cleaning. The person washing her teeth mentioned that the other teeth required a crown. My wife brought up that the crown they installed wasn't making contact with her lower teeth correctly, and she'd like that fixed before she considers fixing other issues. The person cleaning my wife's teeth had her do an X-ray to examine the crown issue before admitting that my wife's crown does indeed have a contact issue. They called Dr. Fong over to examine the issue, but Dr. Fong was busy with other patients and told us to schedule another appointment. We did. On the day of the appointment, Dr. Fong gave us 3 solutions to the issue. The first solution was to DRILL HER LOWER TEETH and RAISE IT USING FILLING so that it makes contact with her implant correctly. The second option was to lower the crown. The third solution was to apply filling on her crown to make it touch her lower teeth correctly. He'd fix her implant issue ONLY if we signed a liability and consent form. We refused to sign it and left. We went to another dentist to seek a second opinion. The second dentist took an X-ray of the implant, gave her a thorough examination of her teeth, and told us that her teeth had no issues at all and that the crown was problematic. We called our insurance after and complained about Dr. Fong. We mentioned the liability and consent form during the call, and the insurance company took interest in that form and requested Dr. Fong to send it to them. Dr. Fong and his office chickened out and never sent it. They'd investigate. After an investigation by our insurance, the insurance told us that Dr. Fong needs to refund $691 for the crown procedure incident. I also like to mention that after the routine cleaning that I mentioned earlier, my wife came home with an uncomfortable sensitive sensation on her teeth that she had a filling on. She realized that they had destroyed her filling. That filling had lasted her 15 years without ANY issues up until the cleaning. When you go to his office, he'll give you a list of non-existent issues that you MUST have him fix. No matter what, he'll try to find a way to get you to abide by his demands. In our first appointment, one of his suggestions for my wife was that she needed filling on the teeth below her implant. He filed down my crown on purpose because he wanted to apply filling on the tooth below. He doesn't care if you're rich or poor or if you have a small or large budget. My wife always asks me what out conversation was about after every appointment because we always manage to wander into some zany topics. Fun stuff. The rest of the staff is top shelf: Andrea, Melissa, Mari... The dual massage chairs in the waiting area are a great reason to get there early. I'm told. Going to the dentist can be stressful, even scary sometimes. Fong's shop keeps things loose, they keep things light. The new guy, however, the way he does cleanings is what you'd expect from Edward Scissorhands. After my latest visit, the term that best describes my mouth is "tore up." He even broke a tooth. (It was kinda deteriorating already, which was known, but no pussyfooting here; all the teeth were cleaned with the same aggression.) Fortunately, he's only covering a brief absence for Andrea, the Queen of Cleaning and the old "4,3,4; 2,3,4; 3,2,4...." bit. Literally, I have drifted off to sleep in her care, she is so assuasive and serene. How this Shawnum character was chosen as a suitable stand-in for her is beyond me. Hopefully he's just a temp... Also, the technician (Diane) took the trouble to show me exactly what I'd been doing wrong in terms of my brushing and explained why it was a problem. Then she showed me the correct way to brush, given the specific brand and type of toothbrush I use. Backstory: For reasons I have had various dentists over the years. (E.g., military honorable discharge; office stopped taking Blue Cross insurance; many relocations; my great dentist passed; a new dentist all-of-a-sudden closed shop and relocated to the sticks.) Bonus backstory: I had teeth pain, the military dentist said my wisdom teeth should be removed. Without much pain medication, he removed one tooth with pliers, a hammer, and chisel. When he reached for the band saw to remove another wisdom tooth I said "that's OK Doc, I'll get that tooth removed later, I'm late for my latrine polishing duties." Anyway, fast forward to 2019, I once again commenced searching for an excellent, highly rated dentist, preferably one who uses a band saw, lead weights, string, and sledge hammer for tooth extractions. My first landing place of choice is always Yelp so I can get the best unvarnished reviews from actual users, customers, and clients. Based on Dr. Kenneth Fong's (aka "Doc") outstanding Yelp commentaries I instantly, as if by magic, made an appointment for his office. I used my first visit to determine if our doctor/patient relationship was a good fit. Doc Fong's office met all my expectations and requirements: - Conveniently located: The office is on Van Ness, next to the new giant Sutter Hospital complex (where the old Cathedral Hill building was located, at one time the Jack Tarr Hotel. I digress, forgive me). The office is a five minute WALK from my house. - Professional environment: Doc's office is located in a medical arts building. It is modern and secure. The office itself is quite relaxing (well, as relaxing as a trip to the dentist can be). The reception area (or is it "waiting room") has the obligatory cable TV, some full body massage contraption (one of those chairs sold by Sharper Image), a foot massager, lots of seats, magazines, cold water from a dispenser, etc. - Up-to-date equipment: Doc uses all the latest dentistry devices. E.g., the camera that takes high resolution pics of your rotting teeth, so detailed you are guaranteed to have nightmares that night. - A super skilled dentist: I don't know about you, but for me the WORST part of the dentist is THE SHOTS. I hate getting them, especially the first one. (I need two to three to make me totally numb.) I rate the dentist's overall skill by asking myself: "Did it hurt when Doc gave me the the numbing shot(s). Doc Fong, he's MASTER OF SYRINGES. I felt absolutely zero discomfort when he rammed that pencil-sized needle under me gums. (Please excuse, for dramatic effect I am taking a few liberties in my factual rendition.) On this basis alone I have become a Doc Fong lifetime patient. Regarding procedures: Doc Fong and his assistants are EXTREMELY professional, grade 4.0 competent, and up-to-date on techniques. Hand holding: IMO opinion a lawyer needs to be a great "hand holder" for all his or her clients. This includes keeping clients updated, explaining all processes, and being a great listener. I expect no less from a dentist and staff. Doc Fong explains procedures BEFORE he does them. His staff is well trained on how Doc expects his office to run. Everyone is kind, understanding, and every employee performs their duties in an extremely professional manner. Bottom Line: Doc Fong and staff constitute the finest dental office you could ever hope to find. P.S. Tell Doc and staff your expectations and express your concerns. They take the time to explain everything to you, not only because you deserve to be treated that way, but also because they strive to do the right thing, always. read more

My sister and her husband have been seeing him for a couple of decades, and I joined them a few years ago and have never been so happy with my dental experience. I hadn't gone to a dentist in over 5 years, and went to a new one on a coworker's recommendation. The dentist I initially saw wanted do 12 fillings on all four quadrants of my mouth in one day, and when he tried, he couldn't get me numb enough to even begin one. Not to mention that they were the most painful shots of Novocaine I'd ever received. I never went back and waited another year as the cavities I knew I had worsened. Then, on a different coworker's recommendation, I went to see Dr. Fong just down the street from my office. I am SO happy I did! Dr. Fong set up a filling schedule for me that seemed realistic, and even said that some of the fillings I was initially told would have to be done could wait. He made me feel so much more relaxed about the whole process, and when it came time to numb me, he explained what likely went wrong the last time and how it shouldn't hurt. A friend recommended Dr. Fong, and he lived up to her recommendation. I'd been having trouble with a crown that a previous dentist had made that had always been sensitive to the point that I avoided chewing anything crunchy on that side. That dentist had not been able to fix the problem. Over the holidays, the crown loosened and became painful, so I had no choice but to find a new dentist during COVID. He fixed it yesterday, and it's perfect. No longer sensitive at all. Plus, his office has taken great pains to keep office staff and patients safe during the pandemic. Previous places did not even tell me the price they are sending to insurance. No crazy doctor who sees you for 5 min and knows everything about your teeth. He will personally sit with you, your X Rays, and pictures of your own teeth and go over every concerns with detailed explanations and diagnosis. He won't push add ons of unnecessary treatments either. He is an amazing dentist. This place is unlike those places where they see you 5 min and throw bunch of stuff your way like a sales team. So as you can see the doctor and the staff are all professional, communicative, and just generally amazing at their job. And that is what a doctor's office should be like. I've been a patient of Dr Fong since around 1997. He's hands down the best dentist I've ever seen. When living outside of SF, I've had to see other dentists and they all pale in comparison. They have also all commented on the crown that he put in and ask who did the work. The staff is so nice as well and the dental hygienist is great. They are all very caring and Dr Fong is awesome to talk to, very personable and a great listener. The office also has 2 back massages chairs as well as a new foot massage machine which I haven't tried out yet. It's a nice way to relax before getting your teeth worked on. I've been seeing the Fong family for as long as I remember. Dr. Fong's father was actually my dentist before (the current) Dr. Fong. OVERALL - I love everyone that works here. Every time I come in, everyone is always very welcoming and friendly. Because I've been coming here for so long, they all treat me like family and make me feel comfortable. The waiting area is very cozy and calming which is what I want to experience before getting my teeth checked. Dr. Fong and Diane always do a great job cleaning and checking my teeth.
