Kenny J's has sent me quite a few coupons via text since our last visit in December, so we finally decided to give it a 2nd try. Unfortunately it will probably be our last. Not sure what's happened, but the quality had gone down since our last visit. We asked for moist brisket, and the worker definitely cut from the point, but the brisket was pretty dry. It also lacked smoke flavor. The ribs were even more surprising. It's a bad sign if I'm wondering if the ribs were baked in the oven. There was just no smoke flavor. Maybe this explains why I've been getting weekly coupons texted to me? But it makes me sad. I hate that I need to fly to Texas if I want decent bbq. The BBQ was pretty good, not the best I have ever had but good. Also it was real smoked meat you could see the smoke ring and taste the smoke. I had the fatty side of the brisket 1/4 lb., and one brisket sausage link. I also had 2 small sides, potato salad and funeral potatoes. I guess I like potatoes, they were good I like the funeral potatoes a bit more than the potato salad. The potato salad seemed a little under seasoned, I prefer a little mustard or something acid in the p-salad to offset the fattiness of the meat. Even though they were th smallest sides it was plenty for one person. I met 3 friends there and we all ordered separately. I don't go out much so I ordered what I wanted. The bill was $30 for 1/4 lb. of brisket, a brisket sausage link and 2 small sides. A little sticker shock but I wanted a good sample of food. We had an awesome visit to Kenny J's BBQ! We shared the smaller family platter and added the turkey breast as our extra meat, which was incredibly tender and flavorful. For our sides, we chose the mac and cheese and the potato salad, and both were classic, delicious comfort food that rounded out the meal perfectly. This was our first time visiting this restaurant...but I'm always on the lookout for some good bbq! This place did not disappoint. We got the family meal with pulled pork, brisket, and the hatch chilies sausage along with funeral potatoes and potato salad. I have to say the meat was very tender, juicy and flavorful! I really liked all of the meat we got. The sides were good too. The potato salad was my favorite side that i tried...lots of dill flavor! Wow - this was one of the best bbq spots I have gone to. Even though the line is long, it moved fairly quickly. You ask them for any of the meats for any weight and you watch them bring a whole slab of meats to the cutting board and slice them to the desired quantity. Some of the meats that we got that were delicious were the pork ribs, the burnt ends, and the brisket. There was also bbq and spicy bbq sauce that you can douse the meats with. Don't forget the sides - the fries were one of the best I've ever had and I'm obsessed with fries. It may have been top 3 fries of my life. The fry it in beef tallow which is probably the right move. And other delicious sides we got were the beans, Cole slaw, corn bread, and funeral potatoes whose recipe is by Kenny's mother. The staff was incredibly friendly as well - Kenny's wife checked in on us often to make sure we were well taken care of and even offered to show us the smokers in the back - though if we weren't running late we definitely would have taken up on the offer. Every once in a while we get a craving for some bbq. I'd never even heard of Kenny J's until finding it last week and I'm glad we did. Staff and service is great. They are fast and friendly. I love how they use tallow too! It's a large space with plenty of seating to help yourself, plenty of high chairs for baby (wall of photos w babies and the rib bones lol), and they encourage you to check out their smokers out back. By the drink station there are regular and spicy bbq sauces as well as some slices of white bread. Everything was tasty to me but the ribs... I WANT MORE ASAP. She suggested some sides for us and told us a little about the restaurant and was super friendly. We got brisket, pulled pork, signature sausage, mac & cheese, baked beans, green beans, French fries and banana pudding. We'll start with my fav and admittedly the star of the meal, the green beans. This place reminded me instantly of Terry Blacks, one of my favorite Texas BBQ places. There was a good variety of sides and meats - we got the Mac and cheese, green beans, and funeral potatoes (a nod to Utah culture). Sides are sold as Single, Pints, or Quarts. For the meats we got the brisket (both lean and moist options were offered), pulled pork, and the signature sausage with hatch chile and cheese. Meats are priced on the board by the 1/2 lb. Somehow, the way this was priced gave me less of a sticker shock! Haha! Everything was delicious and smoked very well! I was most surprised by the brisket - this is one that a lot of places mess up and Kenny J knocked it out of the park. Same goes for the pulled pork- it's usually dry, but this wasn't. Each bit will filled with flavor that you don't need a sauce! In case you like a little more "umph" to your meats, their BBQ sauces were delicious. Both the regular house sauce and spicy sauces had great flavor and not too overpowering. Norma was our cashier tonight and she's just the sweetest girl. This is a really good bbq spot, a little pricey (what bbq place isn't) but at least you get your money's worth. I had the ribs and Mac and cheese, and there's a lot of meat on the ribs, much more than most other bbq places I've been to. Julie and I took all four of our grandkids here and we loved it! And so did the grandkids! We had the platter which included pulled pork, brisket, and ribs and two sides and with drinks the whole thing was around $100. The food was wonderful. And it's a bright and clean and really nice place. We didn't get to meet Kenny, but we did meet his wife and she was delightful. This is a family owned restaurant. This family restaurant had definitely worked hard to make themselves known for their first year open. To start, the workers are very nice and helped alot with trying to figure out what to order. Best BBQ we have tried in Utah by far. Meat was all tender and spectacular and the ribs are my new favorite from anywhere! I regularly get asked my fav bbq spot in SLC (since I live here) & end up hesitant with my answer. There is great bbq in Utah but not much Im hyped about in SLC. On my recent flight home, I found Kenny J's that opened last month.     Walking up I peaked behind a fence and noticed a 1000 gallon offset and a M&M rotisserie. Dude what? M&M in Utah? Are they taking over the world?   It was such a lovely brisket. Nicely rendered. A pretty bark. Extremely moist. Smokey with what I think is a white oak. Post oak? Def not the native gamble oak found in UT. The best brisket in the SLC? In my opinion, yes. I think the sleeper is the turkey. Obviously moist, but because it isn't rested in butter, the exterior is nice and crispy. The flavor of turkey isn't overpowered by butter. Which I enjoy as well, but this was a nice change of pace compared to other turkey I've had. The sauces were wonderful too. I loved the spicy bbq sauce the most. The heat hits you up front, then sweetness soothes it, then the spice returns. Perfect for the turkey and possibly for the brisket, but I forgot to try it. I did try a little of it on the ribs though. Glossy with a nice smoke ring and a slightly sweet glaze. Some of the sides represent UT. On the menu there are funeral potatoes and fries w/ fry sauce. Google it if you don't know lol. The fry sauce here reminded me more of In-n-Out spread. The San Diegan in me loved it. The side I loved the most is the creamed corn. This might as well be a dessert with how sweet the corn & buttery the sauce is. Speaking of dessert, the banana pudding here is pretty unique. It comes is with biscoff cookie and tastes closer to banana and cheese cake filling rather than a pudding. Was it great? YES, give me another cup.   I'm stoked to have Kenny J's.
