I like supporting local business especially while traveling sometimes you have to go to the chain but sometimes you don't. In this instance so glad I didn't Sauce Boss was amazing. We chose it because it was close to the hotel how lucky are we. We went with a group of five. We ordered three entrees and a side of wings. The wings were our starter and they were fantastic black and wings are great highly recommend. My wife and I split the fried chicken with a side of mashed potatoes and gravy and the cornbread it was absolutely fantastic cannot speak highly enough. My mom and dad split the shrimp and grits which they also said was great I did try the grits they were lovely, gooey, cheesy awesomeness. My sister had the kale salad as she needs gluten-free options it was easily the largest most fantastic looking kale salad I've ever seen, and she said it was great. The last thing I would probably comment on is the sauces with a name like sauce boss it better have good sauce and it did. Each and every sauce was unique from others I've had but didn't disappoint all where extremely tasty I especially like the spicy one that came with the fried chicken. At this restaurant they don't have salt and pepper on the table and for good reason everything was spiced and seasoned very well. As for service, our server was very attentive, very kind, made great suggestions and all that being that we came in within a half an hour, 45 minutes of closing, you can't beat that!!! If you want boring food don't eat here. If you want the same plain Jane thing you find at every other chain, don't eat here! I've been here many times and have enjoyed every dinner I've eaten here! The staff are warm and friendly, Chef Julius frequently comes by to say hello to guests, and it's a great place to have a massive meal and relax. I love that you start off with the pork rinds and sauce at the beginning, and I always order the house red drink (free refills!). I've had the chicken fried chicken, catfish, and shrimp and grits as mains; and different combinations of the collard greens, candied yams, and golden splendor as sides. I mean, I thought I reviewed this place immediately after I went, because in my head there are rave reviews. At the risk of being stoned to death, I will preface this by saying I am not a "comfort food" enthusiast. My husband served an LDS mission in the south, so he loves it. There were people waiting, but we only probably waited 15 or 20 minutes before being seated toward the back of the restaurant by the restrooms. The place is comfortable and welcoming--brightly lit and clean. Our server was absolutely stellar, and I wish I could remember her name. But it was clear she enjoyed her job and loved the food as she raved about every item we chose. My husband got the red drink, which was good, but not really my thing. Our food came out quickly. I got chicken fried chicken with mac and cheese and sweet potatoes. I enjoyed all of it quite a bit. My husband got fried chicken with greens and black eyed peas. He loved all his food. He was a little disappointed that the chicken was boneless; I'm not sure why this is a priority for him as I am not versed in soul food. Honestly, I don't have anything bad to say. Draper, Utah Southern food? Fried catfish? All in the middle of Utah? I had to try it. This is a sit down and order restaurant. Very casual inside, white walls with metal chairs and concrete floor. Very simple. Very small space. About 14 tables. I have food, allergies, and the waitress answered all of my questions. But then she sent the chef/owner, Julius, over to talk with me. Pleasant man from Chicago. But his recipes are all from his family who lived in the South. I ordered the fried catfish which is accompanied with two sides. I chose the candied yams and the mac & cheese. My husband ordered the fried chicken with mashed potatoes, potatoes, and gravy and the macaroni and cheese. Both plates are served with a slice of cornbread with a large honey butter smothered on top. The food came out very hot. The breading on the catfish is very thick and a lot of spices. I was pleasantly surprised when I cut my catfish and discovered it was deboned and tender. The mac & cheese was creamy and the candied yams were super sweet. Just the way I prefer them. They did seem a bit runny, but the flavor was good. The fried chicken was unbelievably moist. The breading was thick and crunchy. The mashed potatoes were of course, homemade with spices, and the brown gravy is chicken based. The cornbread was delicious. Comes with a slab of honey butter. I only wish it was served warm. It would've made the experience perfect. The food portions are large. The food has wonderful flavor with the perfect spice and southern heat. I would definitely recommend this restaurant and I would give it 4.8 stars. I didn't expect to find good soul food in Draper but here we are! Let's keep this restaurant around! I got the Mac and cheese and grits and both were very good, particularly the Mac. The cornbread was soft, spongey, and sweet. I only gave it four stars because while I enjoyed my blackened pork chops, they didn't blow me away. That said, my friend was raving about his fried chicken. Finally, the helpings were large - we were both stuffed and had leftovers. The service was wonderful, the ambiance is simple and warm with the primary focus of this place being the food. Try everything! It was our first of many visits to the Sauce Boss Southern Kitchen. The red drink was delightful, amazing flavors and super refreshing. I drank like 4 of them! Fried green tomatoes were BOMB! Crispy on the outside, silky smooth on the inside. Perfect seasoning. The ranch was the cherry on top. Got the catfish with collard greens and mashed potatoes. That gravy, dude, gold! Pure gold. The mashed potatoes were red potatoes with some skin left on, just the way I like it. My first time trying collard greens, I liked them more than I thought, reminds be of green beans with bacon. The wife got chicken fried chicken, fries and mac&cheese. The fires were super crispy. Chicken was fall off your chair good!!! Mac&cheese was creamy and flavorful. The corn bread was the perfect balance between sweet and savory, nice crispy edges and the middle was cake like. The honey butter on top was delicious. On Good Friday I got a craving for some fried fish and southern food sounded good. After a search I realized I had this place bookmarked but forgot about it! Everything was so tasty. As an appetizer you have a couple pork rinds and some special sauce to try. The fish had a lot of batter but it was flavorful. I loved the sides I got. Golden splendor aka mac and cheese and sweet potatoes were especially delicious. I also love corn bread. The ambience was busy and cozy but not too noisy. Service once we were seated was good, but our only critique is that they could have seated us and other guests a little sooner judging by all the empty tables at times. I don't know if they spaced it out like that intentionally or if the bussing and hostess crew was just slow. I'd go back for sure to try the fried chicken next. I had high expectations for Sauce Boss Southern Kitchen after hearing so many rave reviews, but unfortunately, it just didn't fully live up to the hype for me. While there were some highlights, there were also areas that fell flat. We ordered the Shrimp and Grits and the Fried Chicken with Candied Yams and Golden Splendor. The Shrimp and Grits had good flavor, and the shrimp was cooked perfectly. However, the grits were too thick--almost like one big glob. It really needed a sauce or liquid to thin it out and bring everything together. The Golden Splendor had excellent cheese flavor, and the pasta was perfectly cooked, but it was very heavy and greasy. The Candied Yams were incredible--sweet, flavorful, and absolutely like dessert. I loved every bite. The star of the meal was the Fried Chicken--deboned for easy eating, with flawless flavor and crispy breading. It's easily the best fried chicken I've ever had. While the chicken itself didn't need sauce, I'm a sauce person, and the lack of sauce options was disappointing. The small amount provided (about two teaspoons) wasn't enough for two large pieces of chicken. The biggest letdown, however, was the atmosphere and service. The waitress was friendly but didn't refill our waters or check on us often, which made it difficult to ask for more sauce. The restaurant wasn't busy, yet many tables were sitting dirty with leftover food, and employees could be heard chatting in the kitchen instead of tidying up. It gave the space a messy and unkempt feel. While I had hoped for more, I'd still return--likely for takeout--because that fried chicken was outstanding, and I can pair it with my own sauces at home. All sauces come on the side. 5/5 For sides we had the following; - Spicy corn, really good, but we've had some great maize, and corn dishes. 4/5 - Mac & Cheese, good but not the best I've had. 3/5 - Collard Greens, I hadn't had these before, they're a bit bitter, like Brussel sprouts, cooked very well. 4/5 - corn bread, good flavor, but mine was cold. I prefer my bread warm. Would love to see them add a corn bread skillet and serve it hot. 3/5 Service was excellent. Would highly recommend supporting this local gem. We came here on a Tuesday to check out the soul food as we don't have a lot of options here in Utah. The staff were quick and super nice. We got the fried chicken, catfish, chicken wings and a kids chicken tender. For the sides, we for yams, collard greens, splendor (Mac and cheese) and mash potatoes. All dishes came with a slice of cornbread. The fried chicken was super tender and delicious. There were some herbs in the seasoning which was different for a typical fried chicken but was still goods. The fried catfish was alright to me, it was soft but the seasoning wasn't anything extraordinary. I probably wouldn't get that again. My kids chicken tender was super dry so that was a little disappointing but she loveddddd the Mac and cheese. The collard greens and yam were super delish and would get that again. We also got the house red drink and sweet tea which were both yummy and refreshing! Definitely recommend. Overall, I would come back to try different items on the menu.
