I want to start with a full disclosure because I think it's important. I'm a physician in a surgical subspecialty, but I have never been affiliated with Kent Hospital or any hospital in Rhode Island. I don't have privileges here, I don't work here, and I have no professional connection to the organization whatsoever. My perspective is simply that of a physician whose family member recently became a patient. To say I came away impressed would be an understatement. Like many healthcare professionals, I tend to notice the little things. How efficiently people communicate. Whether nurses seem supported. How quickly diagnostic studies are performed. Whether the physicians appear engaged. Those details often tell you far more about a hospital than any glossy brochure ever could. From the moment my relative arrived, everything moved with remarkable efficiency. The Emergency Department was organized, the staff remained calm despite what appeared to be a busy day, and there was a genuine sense that everyone knew their role. We never felt forgotten, and there was always someone willing to answer questions. If the person we asked didn't have the answer, they found someone who did instead of giving us the runaround. That level of communication is something every hospital should strive for. The nursing staff deserves special recognition. They were attentive, compassionate, and incredibly professional. They balanced kindness with confidence, which is reassuring for both patients and families. The physicians were equally impressive, taking the time to explain their thought process and discuss the plan of care in language everyone could understand. As a physician, I was also struck by how quickly ancillary services were able to turn things around. Diagnostic imaging was performed promptly, laboratory and pathology results were available surprisingly fast, and there never seemed to be unnecessary delays in moving the evaluation forward. That kind of efficiency doesn't happen by accident. It reflects good systems and good leadership. The hospital itself isn't the newest facility you'll ever walk into, but it's clean, well maintained, and clearly cared for. I'd much rather see a hospital invest in excellent people and efficient patient care than marble floors and fancy artwork in the lobby. From environmental services to patient transport, every employee we encountered was courteous and took pride in what they were doing. I also noticed that the Emergency Department appears to be undergoing expansion, and that's genuinely encouraging. Based on what I experienced, this is a hospital worth investing in. Kent has a reputation that some people still associate with years gone by. In my opinion, that reputation no longer reflects reality. Hospitals evolve, leadership changes, and cultures improve. Based on this experience, Kent deserves to be judged on what it is today, not what it may have been years ago. I don't hand out praise lightly, especially when it comes to healthcare. I spend my career inside hospitals, so my expectations are probably higher than most people's. Kent exceeded them. If my family ever needed hospital care again in Rhode Island, I would feel entirely comfortable bringing them here. Outstanding work by everyone involved. read more

had a highly concerning experience at the Kent Hospital Emergency Room. After being brought into a room, I was completely left alone for over 5 hours. During this entire time, no nurse or staff member came in to check on me, update me, or monitor my condition. Leaving a patient isolated without communication or basic check-ins is unsafe and unprofessional. The lack of care and oversight in this ER needs immediate attention from hospital management. read more

The emergency room is horrible but not based on wait time, but more based on the attitudes of the hospital, workers who chose to do this for a living! Nurse Karina is the worst. i'm not really quite sure why she chose to be a nurse. But she's not very good at it. Not only are the wait times horrible but the nurses and security guards are very unprofessional and rude. It is sad to expect people to care for you especially when you're not feeling well. This is particularly for the Cardiologist ward of the hospital. There were a few great doctors but not enough to change the final bad taste it left. Overall I am sad angry and confused by the way I was discharged from your facility. I was told with certainty that I had suffered a heart attack and it was alluded to that it could have been more than one since I had 4 identical episodes. Yet my discharge papers say "chest pain" and do not mention heart attack at all. It stated that I can resume my normal diet which for all you know could be greasy fried fast food. I was not told what to do if I have another heart attack or what kind of activity I can or can't do. I am 36 and terrified because I was given no guidance. I called Dr. Thomas's office for help and his nurse was both unkind and un helpful. I told her my concern and that I do not know what I'm supposed to do in these 6 weeks I have to wait and she told me I just need to talk to my pcp. That is not a sufficient. I want to sincerely thank the entire staff at this hospital for the care they gave my mother during her final days. She was treated with kindness, dignity, and compassion, and our family will never forget it. Originally she was supposed to be transferred to Rhode Island Hospital because that is where her doctors were, but there were no beds available. Looking back, I truly believe it was a blessing that she stayed here because the care she received was wonderful. I especially want to thank Amanda, Victoria, and Sheila, and all the nurses and staff who took such good care of her and were so kind to our family during a very difficult time. Extremely long wait time and unprofessional & rude staff. I ended up leaving after 4 hours (I understand this isn't that long overall for an ER but the entire experience wasn't great) and removed the IV. I don't even know what it was for. Communication could be better. I will say the people I spoke to when initially getting treated were kind and helpful. However I was sent back to the waiting room and not seen again for 4 hours while I was there for chest pain. I was also told I would not be able to see my bloodwork results that were initially taken when I arrived because I had left. Would recommended going elsewhere- like the majority of these reviews- if possible. read more

While I was hospitalized for 5 days I had the best Care ever by some of the most beautiful people. They were caring, professional, and wonderful people. My husband went to the ER via ambulance on 5-4-26. Was told he had pneumonia. The gave him oral antibiotics and said they would send a script and he should take a dose in the morning. It is now 1:21 pm on 5-5-26 and no script has been sent even though I called twice. So he has missed his morning dosage. This is unacceptable. read more

During my recent 4 day stay at Kent was amazing. My nurses Rachel and Touri on the 3rd floor unit were more than amazing. I've met Rachel before and loved her then, still love her now. Maria was also amazing and very attentive. I needed 2 blood transfusions, 3 units of Iron and 2 of Magnesium. I'm not a high maintenance patient but anytime I needed something they were always right there. Not my favorite hospital, but my favorites nurses. read more

Beware the Kent Hospital Emergency Department: this hellhole is a pure disgrace. First, I understand why an ER may need to station patients in the corridor when no beds are available, but to leave one there, languishing for five hours while I watched multiple treatment rooms turn over - dozens of times each - was simply infuriating. Next, i was cleared by security so I could accompany my loved one into the treatment area. The guard was flippant and sarcastic, and I could not believe how unprofessionally he presented, reclined behind his computer as though he were on a sun chair at the beach.. When we were finally called in, we got up and moved toward the entrance, where there stood a nurse, a who barked, "patient, only!" She was incredibly insensitive and rude. I then had to wait, without updates, for 5 hours until I was allowed into the treatment area. During this agonizing period, twice I witnessed staff enter the waiting area and announce a patient's name, only to have every person in the waiting area respond with either, "she's gone to X-ray," or "they took her to CT scan." This struck me as a pretty good indicator of how ludicrously lightly this place takes patients' confidentiality. Care was rushed and always seemed to be delivered as an afterthought. Staff was not nice and acted as though they were quite inconvenienced and put-out, just by having been made to deal with you. read more

Understaffed, overcrowded, lined up in the hall like some sort of animals. If you need a nurse forget about it, they're too busy attending to everyone else. Have an emergency good luck getting help in a timely manner. Explain your symptoms and you're questioned as if you want to be in the hospital for 8+ hours only to not be heard or acknowledged. Nurses are so busy chit chatting with one another - maybe that's why they can't help patients. When the shift change happens your nurse has no clue what's going on. This place is a cattle ranch. Horrible service and horrible care. And when you read your discharge papers and your portal you see how they REALLY feel about you, with all the assumptions they make on Your symptoms as if you're making stuff up for fun. I hate this place so much. They have about 3 people here who care otherwise I hear the way the nurses speak to the patients. " I'm not helping her no more she's annoying ". As they spoke about an older patient. This place is disgusting they have TeePee like tents in the halls, there's no way for privacy within those little tents and you don't have a button the same when you're placed in the hall how can you expect help especially if you're bed bound? Make it make sense. This is terrible medical care, absolutely horrendous. read more

Don't use them for any specialist care providers. Kent utilizes a hidden "facility fee" on all affiliated providers so that specialist visit that is supposed to be a flat co-pay will cost you hundreds more because Kent sends a separate bill for meeting the doctor in one of their buildings. Many states have already banned this practice, unfortunately RI is not one of them. I have seen specialists from Brown and Lifespan, and have never had to pay more than my copay for a yearly checkup through the same insurance provider. Avoid their scheming hidden fees and go somewhere else. read more

I didn't use the waiting area. I went to be with a family member that was admitted but had no room for two days. Patient was put in a hall on a stretcher. Short staff that I had to wheel my family member to the bathroom myself. I could count less than 5 times the nurse came and when she did come to ask question prior to imaging she failed to medicate the patient and the patient was returned from imaging dept after being down there an hour. Quality of care was minimal as being short staffed the nurses were running around like chickens with their heads cut off. The urine from patient was to a point that I asked to be moved with the patient. All the providers and their expertise was an A. Also my family member didn't get anything to eat until about 1-2 p.m. after asking several times. I am in healthcare and this was unacceptable and poor care. They are in need of staff. I personally would not come here nor will I allow any of my family members to come to this ER. I could continue with a few more observations but I think this is enough. Definitely no I laid on a stretcher for 12 hours They took my phone and clothes. They refused to give me my phone or clothes so I could go to another hospital and would let me call the police I laid there for 12 hours with a broken hand , they refused to give me any pain medication or my blood pressure or blood thinner medication s that I'm supposed to have ever 6 hours I laid there suffering They put a cast on my had that was so bad a few hours later when I got home it fell off. The workers are rude and very nasty The state needs to shut the hospital down. read more

When I arrived on 11/15 around 10 at night, I had a good team that was attentive to my situation and were also busy with more serious cases coming into the ER as it was raining hard. I was told that I was being admitted so I had my husband head home. The next afternoon, he came to the room I was moved to in the ER and we waited. I had a few doctors in and out of the room speaking to me about the procedure I was going to need to have done. I was told by a nurse that I had a room, and then was told shortly after that, that I didn't have a room. I was given a different hospital bed but because of the procedure I was having, I couldn't eat or drink anything before it. I was finally given something that afternoon. I was told they don't do that procedure on the weekends so it may be done Monday but it's not a guarantee since the schedule was almost full, so I may have to wait u til Tuesday for it. The one nurse, Jamie, I had in the er on Sunday was very rude to my husband and he told them that if they didn't have the ability to care for me, that they could have me transferred to somewhere that could. On Monday the 17th, was a long day and wait as the doctor I had was not sure when my procedure was going to happen. I had good nurses on the floor, but it wasn't until my husband said something similar Monday afternoon after 2pm, that I went down for my procedure Monday early evening. The team I had down there were funny and amazing. They knew I was anxious and was able to get my mind off of what was going on. Dr. Thomas is absolutely amazing. I still would not trust going back to this hospital unless I absolutely had to as a last resort. read more

The only reason they deserve 1star is that the initial intake when you walk in is efficient. It's abhorrent after that- the health department needs to start doing surprise visits to investigate the level of "care" they claim to provide. I waited for 7 hours, and she never looked at my blood work and never let me see a Dr.; instead, a nurse practitioner went to another patient who she thought was me and started discussing my medical issues and then said, wait, you, not my patient, never was allowed to see a Dr. Im calling for a dept of health investigation. read more

The lack of care Kent County hospital has for their patients is absolutely appalling. My mother went into the emergency room for severe spine pain in January. They didn't even touch her. They didn't do films. They gave her an extra strength tylenol prescription and sent her on her way. We are now in August. The pain never went away, and my mom was finally able to get a MRI. She has a severely compressed spine caused by two masses. I get back pain can be difficult to diagnose, especially in middle-aged people. But even if they had examined her back and done an X-ray and the findings were normal, I probably wouldn't be writing this review right now. This isn't the first bad experience we've had at Kent. They literally just care about getting you out the door. read more

Updating once again. See prior review about billing issue. Since then I received an overpayment check $5 not even enough for a coffee but hey it was all done so I updated. Imagine my surprise when I received a bill from a collection agency for about the same amount that I'd already paid. These people need to get it together. Don't sent me a $0 balance letter and refund and then send me to collections. Send me proof that this is owed and I have no problem with paying it. But now I'm skeptical. Do I pay again and then receive another bill 6 months later? Honestly the most unprofessional place I've ever dealt with. It was bad enough that the second I opened my eyes in recovery they were "ohhh let's get you dressed and out of here" I'm half asleep. Unsteady as hell but get out. But fine. I'd rather be home. Then the billing issues started. If you find yourself dying on that sidewalk in front of this place request an ambulance to RIH. I'd rather wait 12 hours with armed security in the hospital than deal with these idiots. I'm currently recovering from a fall, stress slows healing and how I have to deal with Kent once again. This place is a waste of complete time! Everyone from the staff there is rude from check-in, to the nurse that checks your vitals, to the doctor that cares less, and does not do a full examination on you. It's like they're ripping off the system. They didn't do anything you don't get a room , they put you in the hallway in a chair. They make you wait six hours in a hallway no privacy to yourself at all. I mean, how do I go in there with back pain and a doctor doesn't even bother to look at my back or even do exams on my back is beyond me. It's like they can care less than that place ! It's honestly really sad because obviously people go to the hospital because they're sick or something going on that they need clarification on , and to go to this hospital and be treated from check to check out like you're not valued is insane. To be fully examined with insane and also send me home with no medication even though when I was there, they said that they would is beyond me.. now I have to go into another walk-in to get examined again to be able to get medication for my excruciating back pain. The last nurse they came to look at me, was the one that told me that I did in fact full of muscles and she could see my backside very swollen , not even the doctor did that. Again, I was sent home with no pain medication even though I was in excruciating pain yesterday and advised how horrible this pain feels. It hurts to call to sneeze to walk to breathe. Literally my back hurts. Feels like it's on fire. When I ask if they can do an exam of my back because I suffer from back problems and I wanna make sure everything's OK. They advise me. They did not need to do a x-ray as that is not needed at this time but they also didn't conduct a full exam of my back either to really determine what happened but here we are. It's sad because these people can go back and charge your insurance top-notch of anything that they've done there when in reality they have done top-notch of nothing !! This hospital shut down. Waited in the ER for multiple hours while people who arrived well after me were seen and released. When I asked how much longer the nurse said we get to you when we get to you and then said I wasn't allowed to have a guest in the room with me while others brought up to 2 in with them. I went to Kent at the direction of my provider because i was vomiting and couldn't pass a stone i had so they needed a fast ultrasound. I was seated in the waiting room for I think 5 hours. I have severe anxiety and my mom was with me she's almost 80 so i was worried about her as well as dealing with the pain and dehydration. I simply asked if she might have and idea of how long it might possibly be and the secretary started to mansplain ER protocol. I understand the protocol but sometimes they do have an idea depending so was, i thought a pretty simple question. I said ok so i might be here till 11 then, which was a sarcastic remark for her lack of empathy. she said if you don't like it you can leave or go sit down. Now i am very aware of how tough it can be because I was a CNA, i never gave my patients an attitude and I've been beaten, bitten, called names etc. But this time I am the patient and have my elderly mother with me, i would have sent her home and just stayed but at this point i felt I had to leave, I didn't want her touching me or even the nurse standing behind her. at this point i realize i still have a IV and i need that taken out. I go to triage door and the nurse saw me and tried walking away, so i tapped on the door. She comes out and tells me i am rude and i have to wait. now I feel bullied by both so I decided I was going to remove it myself and she continued to yell at me for trying, i know what to do, i am not stupid. She took out the IV and walked away... all of this was done in the public waiting room, was very embarrassed. After all of this i contacted the dept of heath and they sided with the hospital saying they did nothing wrong, they said i signed out, i never signed anything and even Christine at the DOH refused to investigate further. This is how terrible you're treated in Rhode Island. if you are mentally ill and unable to speak for yourself please have a caregiver to fight for you because the DOH and Hospitals will not. they don't have to treat you either apparently, they are not held responsible if you leave with iv or if you get hurt EVEN if you cant be left alone. I was patient at Kent Hospital about 5 weeks ago, and it was first time there as patient. Think the hospital needs remodeling? Rooms are semi private, which is awful, cause with the League of Nations never who you're going to share room with ? And I don't like sharing a bathroom with all kinds ladies? Second rooms small and TV's are so small you can just about see them and stations on TV sucked and food was terrible? I was on liquid diet and have fluctuating high blood pressure and broths were so salty could not eat them and I don't drink coffee or only one kind tea and they gave me stuff I don't drink? I starved for 4.5 days and from Cather in me for 3 days thank god went home on Sunday ended up with uti and nurses were ok nothing great and don't give out basins to was so for 4 days could not wash up? Hospitals charge more do less? Use to go in hospital and get bastion small puke basin comb and toothbrush and small toothpaste and power? Now nothing and charge more! And my original doctor weeks before surgery up and moved to Newport, so ended up with another surgeon, did not like him for very cold and only saw him before surgery 5 min day of surgery and weeks later in office? Never saw him in my room and saw other doctors? And new robotic surgery is awful pain in most part of body and 5 weeks later still in pain and my taste buds gone? Whole experience sucked? I wish I could give this hospital a zero-star rating. The service was rude and unprofessional and the care was awful. My husband went there for a specific reason, but they ended up giving him something completely unrelated. The nurses treated him like dirt the entire time he was there. He was admitted at 10am and the doctor told the staff he can have something to eat after noontime, it was pass 8pm and they didn't give him not even a glass of water. The next morning because they weren't doing nothing but drawn blood to do nonsense test, my husband asked to be discharged, and the nurse in charge, Chantel (that's the name of the nurse), started giving him attitude. After he was finally discharged, we had to ask her for the discharge paper because she left the room and wouldn't give it to him. She made him sign whatever he was supposed to and then told him he was all set and left the room. This is just part of what happened there. read more
