Kent and his team are fantastic. The salon has pivoted to every single request the city and state has put into place to protect the Boston population during the covid-19 pandemic. Temperature checks, hand sanitizing at every station that's open. Cleaning of each seat as it's turned over for the next client and rigorous social distancing - masks are worn by clients AND stylists and the absolute fabulous, Shana at the front desk that runs the show. Kent is a consummate professional. He employs locals and is an anchor in the neighborhood. I've recently moved from the west coast to Boston and Kent is actually one of the first people I met. He supports local artists, using the walls of the salon to highlight their work. Kent has a keen eye for for color, style and shape and I highly recommend giving his salon your business. read more

I never write reviews but I left with the worst haircut I've ever received and am now so embarrassed by it. Can't believe I spent over $250 on this and was charged for gloss without even asking or consenting to the extra cost. After moving to the South End and with so many 5 star reviews I was excited to find a salon within walking distance. This is my 3rd (and last time) visiting the salon. I first went for a consultation and then a balayage but kept the length on my hair. I came back wanting a change, showed many inspo pics, and ended up with a completely different cut. The layers are blunt and uneven and half of my hair is a "curtain" bang that looks like it's been burnt or broken off. Photos below show how awful the back was cut. Too embarrassed to post a front view which is a million times worse. Color is fine but the cut is horrendous. Went to a new salon and the lady told me it's going to take 6 months to grow back. Salon is overpriced and way behind the trends. Stylists should be required to have continuing education and training to avoid this atrocity. read more

Since I moved to Boston, I was looking for a good salon. I needed to have a hair cut and change my hair color as I was bored with it. Both Amanda and Taylor are great hairdressers. Taylor gave me a great cut, which was the best I have had in my life. Amanda made my hair color exactly the way I wanted. The hair color I wanted was hard to achieve, and it took a long time, but the result was so good. I recommended all my friends that they should visit Kent Newton Salon, and I will definitely be going back. Moreover, they sell great hair products for treated hair. After changing my hair color to mulled wine from dark brown, I needed products. I was not able to find the specific line of products in Target/Wegman's or on Amazon. 3 1/2 stars*** I was looking to do ombre, so one of the receptionist's set me up with Lily since i asked for someone who is good at coloring. We didn't end up doing ombre, we did balayage instead ( i forgot why since this took place in March 2017 (either my hair was too dark? though i had it highlighted already, or it would require a lot of bleaching and i didn't want too much bleach- or maybe balayage is just Lily's specialty- but a bunch of my friends had ombre sooo I wanted it too...) and I did ask for low maintenance but I still had to go every 7-8 weeks to tone (gloss it). Everyone is really nice but it's $$$$. I think I went in with the intent that if I got ombre- my regular hair at the top can grow and I wouldn't have to go in as often to retouch it...You can blow dry your own hair here if you opt out when you make the reservation (since a blow dry is separate $35). As of today Lily has moved on... I did get a split end treatment that ended up needing to be blow-dried by Kathy and she did a very nice job with it since I have very long hair! It was sooo straight and soft after she did it. (140 for tone/split end treatment/blowdry). She didn't once hit my piercing which was great as it is pretty sensitive. She knows fairly quickly if you are looking for something or if something isn't right! Natalia I believe is her name, the receptionist is so nice! Always jolly, but I think there is another person that also works who was going in circles with me one time when I called a week in advance to tell them I won't do a blow-dry after my gloss since I will be on a tight schedule - so she ended up saying we will just keep it there and you can cancel when you come in; so i wasted my time calling and telling her when the day of I did indeed have to cancel it and felt bad because someone else could have gotten that slot to do something else maybe. All in all if you can splurge I would come and get my hair here with Lily as she did do a nice job. I'm not one to go against my stylist's advice but I always do appreciate when they listen and do what I'm spending 500$+ to do my hair. Bring cash for tip as you cannot tip on cards. They serve wine! Last week I visited my brother in Boston, and while I was there I decided to get a spontaneous haircut! My sister-in-law is a regular here and highly recommended this salon. I walked in, described that I wanted a trim with an undercut, and recommended to get an appointment with Sam for later on the same day. (And as a tip, if you have a referral, you get 50% off your first services! I didn't have a card on me, but the really friendly receptionist made an exception! I appreciated that, especially because they knew that I was not a local and would not be likely to return anytime soon -- although I wish I could!) The customer service here is so great. The premises themselves are beautiful, and as I was waiting (not even for five minutes!) for the stylist, I was offered water, tea, or even wine. Sam was absolutely fabulous as well. I was pretty excited about the undercut, but nervous too, and she took the time to check with me before moving forward with shaving half of my hair off! She also gave some great hair care advice. After getting my hair done and fixing it three times to try and get the color I had asked for, I decided to give Kent Newton Salon a try at the recommendation of a friend. I was greeted instantly by Talia, who couldn't be friendlier! She offered something to drink and gave my almost 2 year old crayons and coloring pages to help keep her entertained. (She also offered to babysit when needed so that's an added bonus!) I then met with Amanda who took a look at my hair and developed a plan confirmed by lily ( also super nice) to fix my messed up color. They actually listened to what I had said and gave me what I had asked for. I love the result and already booked my next appointment. I used to see Dana at Liquid and loved his easy demeanor, willingness to listen to what a client wants, and to give each person either the most conservative haircut possible (me, I'm a wuss!) or something outlandish or crazy (some of his Liquid clients). When he switched studios to Kent Newton, I happily followed him as it's still pretty close to Liquid in the South End and even more conveniently located on Washington Street - close to the silver line and with lots of on-street metered parking. Dana always makes my hair look 100x better when I leave, is a joy to talk to and is just a really fun, good person. And Kent Newton is a pretty but not pretentious salon where every employee is friendly, helpful and professional. Definitely a total win of an experience. read more

Despite having an awful experience with the Kent Newton salon on my first visit, I gave them the benefit of the doubt and went two more times. I was beyond disappointed in their customer service each and every time. Visit #1 -- My stylist was running behind and I was told I'd have a 20 minute wait. It was actually 75 minutes. And while I would have rescheduled and come back -- that can be really hard to do when you're a mom who needs to find a babysitter for every appointment. It was easier for me and the babysitter if I waited it out. Visit #2 -- I used their online booking service to schedule a full foil and a cut. Silly me for assuming that blow dry would be included (I didn't realize that I was supposed to add "blow dry" separately to my list of services). So, when my hairstylist finished my foil and cut, she told me I was NOT scheduled for a blow a dry and she wouldn't have time to do it -- I'd have to leave with wet hair. 1 - How on Earth can you tell if your color and cut look ok if it's not dried so you can see it? 2 -- Who has ever had their hair cut wet, dried, and NOT had their stylist fix any out-of-place pieces with a dry cut! 3 -- It was spring time and still cold, so after dropping nearly $300 on my service, I was sent outside with sopping wet hair! The last straw (visit #3) -- their credit card machine wasn't working. After waiting for nearly 20-minutes while they attempted time and time again to ring my card through, they eventually just wrote down my credit card number and phone number and told me they'd try again later. Within a few days, I noticed that Kent Newton charged my credit card 4X. I immediately contacted them, and my credit card company to rectify the issue. No one from Kent Newton called me back. I left several messages, was told I needed to speak to the owner and he'd get back to me -- nothing!! I filed a fraud case with my credit card company who also told me that Kent Newton was unresponsive when they tried contacting them to reverse the payment. Outside of all that -- my hair color and cut was mediocre at best. No thanks! read more

This is the hair salon of my dreams. I've been Lori's client for 10+ years and I was so excited when Kent opened this gem in the South End. In the many years I've known Kent prior to this salon opening, Kent has always had a huge smile for me and has always remembered my name, always! So when he opened this new spot, I was so delighted when Lori decided to join him. Everyone there really is lovely - Kent, Lori, Marissa, Taylor, Heather (who's no longer there...) and more... but yesterday, Jason Burke did my Mom's hair and blew us both away. He gave her the hair she never had (due to over-processing and bad color jobs) and she still feels like a million bucks, 24 hours later. This cut/style was exactly what she needed. Jason is an angel. The atmosphere of the salon is lively but so comfortable. I feel like a VIP when I walk in, but I don't get VIP attitude from anyone. And the clientele is so varied - famous folks, families with their kids, locals, and me... just someone who will follow Lori anywhere. I am so delighted to know everyone in this salon and my day just gets brighter each time I walk in. I hope it's here forever, as I'll always sing its praises! read more

For Kent, Lily, and all the others at Kent Newton Salon who helped me with my big color change! Kent gave me the most amazing haircut. I also wanted a color change, from blonde to a deep strawberry blonde. I ended up wanting my hair a bit darker than what I went home with after my first appointment with Kent. I called KNS and made an appointment, explaining that I needed my hair done the same day because the day after I was going to a big family gathering. They squeezed me in with Lily. Amazing customer service. Lily worked absolute magic on my hair. We achieved this rich, beautiful reddish brown that suits my skin tone perfectly. She said she didn't want me to leave until I was 100% happy. No charge for the appointment... best customer service EVER. After the appointment I did leave happy, but started thinking more about adding some dimension and more depth to my color. Lily was communicating with me directly via text, was so thoughtful, asking me how I like my color the day after my appointment her, sending me pictures of more ideas for my color. I booked another appointment because I wanted some deeper low-lights to add dimension to my hair. Again, after the next appointment, no charge. She considered it a step along the road to make my hair exactly what I wanted, since the first time around I was not 100% satisfied. My hair looks amazing now. Absolutely love it, love the cut, and if I hadn't moved to Richmond, VA recently, I would be back to see her for every hair appointment. Lily is an extremely valuable asset to KNS, and just a really good person. She's genuine, talented, and down to earth with her clients about what they want and how to get there. I hate writing reviews for creative aspects, as everyone's opinion varies so much, but after my haircut yesterday, I feel I should write this review. I had a haircut appointment with one of the stylists there and it was possibly the worst haircut I've ever received (in terms of style at least). Now, granted, when he asked me if I liked my haircut afterwards, I said yes, as I typically do not like my haircuts as soon as they are done. However, after sitting with this haircut for a full day now, I still think it is pretty bad. I thought something was wrong when he started to use a men's electric razor to cut my bangs and the hair that frames my face, as it looked pretty choppy, but I assumed he would blend it out (which didn't happen). I also gave him photos of Chrissy Teigan and Jessica Alba's Lobs (long bob's) which are wavy, and I walked out of the salon with my hair dead straight. I have a gap in my bangs, and it just isn't what I was hoping for at all. I think that the guy who did my hair was a great person, and tried really hard, but our styles just don't mesh at all. I ended up going to another salon afterwards to try and fix my bangs before coming into work today, and even that hair stylist was horrified at what had happened to my hair. All in all, I don't think I'll be coming back here again and I would be weary of all of the 5-star reviews, which is why I'm writing this and rating it only 2 stars. read more

Kent Newton Salon has a nice atmosphere. It's bright, people are in a good mood, and the salon is clean. I was even offered wine upon arriving (wine!), which I declined probably because I was in shock of the gesture. Next time, put me down for a glass. The owner, Kent Newton, has a pug which was trotting around and hanging out by Kent's work space. I'm a fan of places that allow their dog to be part of the action. Side note: I'm also a fan of the P.R.O.N.E 5K road race at Carson Beach which benefits a pug rescue organization. Pugs are everywhere at the race. Back to the hair. This was my first time visiting the salon, and subsequently the first time having my hair cut with stylist Amanda. I told her I wanted my hair nice and short but not too short that I couldn't do anything with it, and she made it happen. Amanda didn't really need any guidance and understood the look I was going for. She's polite, very friendly, and like a magician with clippers and scissors. Lily was so amazing I wish I could give more stars! I have been coloring my hair blonde for about 9 years and never saw anyone besides my colorist in New York. After living in DC for a while, I was forced to try someone new and had such an awful experience I was so scared to try out a new colorist again when I moved to Boston. Lily was recommended to me, and I decided to give her a try since I wouldn't be back in New York for a few months. Lily was so knowledgable and really made it a point to tell me everything she was doing. After speaking with her for the first 10 minutes, my nerves were completely calmed and I felt 100% confident in her. Once she was finished, I could not have been happier! Being a natural brunette, it's very hard to get that natural blonde look- but she did it impeccably! She cut my hair as well- just a trim- but it looked great too! Could not be happier and I will definitely be back there. I was also extremely happy to find out upon checking out that my services were 50% off for my first visit because I had been referred. The place may be a bit pricy for some people- but I honestly can't stress enough that it is WORTH EVERY PENNY. I have been seeing Dana now for about three years and followed him to Kent Newton from his previous salon. When I first met him I had only just moved to the area, and as always when trying something new (particularly a hairdresser), I was nervous and skeptical. That lasted for maybe five minutes. Once he started talking to me, I could tell that not only was he a good fit, but he actually knew A LOT about his craft. I had just come in for a simple cut at the time, I was testing the waters after all, and he immediately put me at ease and was extremely approachable and one of the most personable people I have met. When you tell him what you want, he listens and offers his insight as well as to make sure he knows exactly what kind of look you are going for...and then works his magic! All too many times in the past, I would tell other hair dressers what I was looking for and they would just nod and do as they were told (regardless of whether said cut or color would actually look good on me), and there was minimum interaction at best. With Dana, I can bring in pictures of whatever colors I have in mind and he offers actual suggestions and input on what would look best. Thank you! This is your profession and you know far more about all the different aspects of this than I do and I VALUE your insight. He is also very easy to talk to, and takes everything you have to say into consideration before offering advice (as needed). I have long, unruly, wavy/curly hair and he always styles it beautifully when he's finished with my cut. Not that my hair type really matters because I've seen him work miracles on his short-haired clientele as well. He knows how you make you feel comfortable in the chair. He listens to what you are looking for and will give you some great suggestions, taking your personality, style, and physical features into consideration, but will never do anything to your hair that you are uncomfortable with. But the best part of the Kent Newton Salon experience is the cut itself. Kimberly has cut my hair 3 times now and has been amazing each time! In the past, stylists have never really been able to cut my hair exactly how I want it or been able to understand the look I'm going for, but not Kimberly -- she cuts and styles it perfectly every time!
