Review of Kent Arbor Co. A sudden tilt of a large beautiful Valley Oak tree in my yard came close to ending in a disastrous fall into my house and my neighbor's house. The tree was immense--150 - 175 feet high with a diameter at base of 5 feet (later found to have an approximate weight of 250 tons). Without doubt, 3/4 of my house would have been destroyed (down to the ground) and 1/3 of the neighbor's house if the fall took place. The deck that surrounded the tree base was twisted and torn and gave evidence to the three City of Sacramento arborists that allowed immediate authorization to remove the heritage tree (thanks to these arborists whose names have now been recorded in my book of remembrance). I rushed to find an arborist and had 4 interviews within a day and only John Kent had an innovative plan that held promise for success. Fifteen feet of fence and hedge had to be removed so that the huge boom-lift bucket truck could get to within 30 feet of the tree base (the tree was 60 feet beyond the fence). And at the later stage of removal, a uniquely designed crane/dump truck would have to get access to the lowest 50 feet of the tree trunk. Mr. Kent pulled technical support off other jobs and had them at my house 30 minutes after I hired him. Four soft-spoken strong young men immediately took down the fence and hedge and had the boom-lift working within 20 minutes. I could tell that the workers were told that there was no time to lose and there was no guarantee that the tree could be removed without causing great property damage and injury to life. The team of four men and John Kent worked like athletes with teamwork and great regard for safety. There was the man in the bucket that could extend to the highest limbs in the tree and the workers on the ground with ropes that attached to the particular limb under consideration. They made sure the unbelievably large limbs that were over the house as well as aside the house did not fall onto the roof or break windows and siding alongside the house. And I still have a hard time believing that some of those huge branches and trunk pieces did not damage the house. I felt that I was viewing a great baseball team where coordination was at the heart of success. In my mind I named this team the counterpart of the great double play combination for the Chicago Cubs of the 1920s, "Tinker to Evers to Chance", shortstop to second to first. I was ever so thankful that my house and my neighbor's house were saved from disaster after two full days of work by the Kent Arbor Company. The cost was substantial as you might well imagine, but I don't believe I have ever spent that amount of money any more wisely in my life. I believe I got one of the great deals in my life. I'll always hold John Kent and his team in the highest regard. Okay a little background, so I bought my first house not too long ago, super happy with my price and blah blah happiness all around... until I actually tried to turn my house into a home... Over the past couple of years I have literally had about 20 different people/companies look at my property and give me quotes for trees to be cut. All sorts of people, I even ventured into the craigslist domain (***STAY AWAY from craigslist for the safety of your home, neighbors and family. CList is good for a lot, but not at the price of your home so be careful with tree removal!). I've had people go so far as to give me a quote, climb my 40 year old tree, and walk away from the job. I've had people that look like they were on drugs come give me quotes. I've been stood up literally, they probably drove by my house and kept going. I've had people tell me they wanted me to pay them almost quarter of my houses total cost for the work... yes let that sink in (25%!!!!). Now I won't lie about the situation, I had a large maple and 2 palms in the backyard... each tree at minimum 60-70 feet high. So the access wasn't the greatest and there wasn't a whole lot of backyard to work with (track homes have tiny backyards). ...Then I met Mr. Kent and his team...finally someone shown a light on my cloudy little house. I left a message and he called me back that night, he was always courteous about working around my schedule and open to talk whenever I was willing and ready. He was open to texting pictures so we didn't waste each others time. He was honest with his opinion even when I would cringe and you could definitely tell through the conversations he has been doing this for most of his life. He is a professional and thinks about the all the things us non arborists think about. This is a real american right here, he has his own business and he keeps himself super busy to provide for his workers and his family. He was interested in my entire project and how the tree removal would affect what I was doing and how I should take different things into account. He was upfront about costs and there were no hidden fees, they even had a short terms and conditions to ease my mind. I don't want to draw this review out too much but he actually honored a quote MUCH MUCH MUCH past the typical 30 day guarantee, the job was a big one and he knew I needed to save up. And his price was the best of any offer I've had in 2 years, BY FAR! Not saying he will offer you the same help but to me that says a lot about him and his company, they were honestly trying to help me, their customer. That type of commitment to not always reaching the maximum profits but helping someone else out... I've lived in the US all my life and those qualities are fleeting. This has literally been my largest house expense to date and I couldn't be more happy! We actually did the math on the loads and Kents crew literally removed 100,000 pounds (50 tons!!!!) from my tiny backyard. Like think about it, these guys literally saved a home from years of those poor trees being neglect and no maintenance from the previous owners. Now I'm super excited to get things going and beautify front and back yards and help my neighborhood look better. It only takes 1 house for everyone to get an extra kick in their step and I've had all my neighbors compliment me. Trees are a huge expense and really need to have lots of consideration before one commits. Sadly this Yelp review still can't describe how grateful I am to the time and money Kent and his team has saved me. If this hasn't convinced you then I'll be happy to vouch for them and seriously if anything just give them a call and get a quote while your talking to other companies (so you dont have to call 20 like i did...). My mom always said at least get 3 quotes before you commit, so at least start here. Please be careful and shop around for a safe professional arborist but also be careful about going with the guys that want to start bringing in cranes and helicopters for cutting some trees. We share a fence with a neighbor who hired Kent Rents in October, 2015, to remove a large tree in her backyard. Long story short: Workers made a huge mess in our backyard...sawdust everywhere, branches, wood slices. We were gone with our new puppy, thank goodness, because they entered our backyard to remove a branch they felled into our yard and left our gate open. Had we been home, our pup would have bounded out of the gate. They also ruined our lighted patio umbrella when the branch fell. My husband caught one of the workers, Jesse, as he was driving away (he hadn't bothered to leave us a note of apology or offer to pay, nor had he asked to come in to clean up our yard) and told him about the umbrella. He left his name and said to get the replacement umbrella and he would repay us. We found the umbrella cheaper on Amazon ($91.81) and when Jesse returned to do some clean up on our neighbor's house, my husband gave him the receipt. He swore he would get us a check asap. Never happened. I wrote the company, to both addresses, in April, explaining what happened and asking that they send the check to us. Nothing...not a word. So, my suggestion is that when you see their trucks parked everywhere, advertising what a great company they are, think twice. Dishonesty and poor customer service speak volumes. read more
