During an early 2025 trip to Washington, D.C., we went to multiple establishments and, coincidentally or not, encountered this specific bourbon and just loved it. The most notable occurrence was at Jack Rose Dining Saloon, where I had literally the best Old-Fashioned I've ever had, using a special Angel's Envy that hung out in some sherry barrels for a while. Since then, we've both regularly ordered it when given the opportunity, and ultimately decided that the best way to appreciate this fine spirit was to go right to the source. So to the mothership we went. My chum did most of the heavy lifting here and scheduled a bourbon tour with Louisville Food Tours (very strong recommend) that featured Angel's Envy at the first stop. It's hard to really put into words what this building looks like as you walk in and explore, but it's just so...nice. It's classy without being inaccessible, and it just felt like a true cathedral of bourbon. As tasteful as the bourbon it makes. During our initial tour, we were probably in the distillery for a solid half hour plus, getting a quick tour of the still and fermenters before being led into a side room on the second floor to formally taste some bourbon. Paula was our guide, both during this tour and later on, and was just enormously impressive, which I touched upon in my review of the official tour as well. She's no-nonsense and loves her bourbon - who can't relate? We learned how to inspect the bourbon in the glass, to take a test sip to numb the pain receptors and to truly appreciate the subtle notes in the bourbon with the second sip. It was legitimately helpful, useful information that we're both going to utilize going forward. After our three-hour tour ended (go hard or go home), it wasn't even much of a discussion - we came back here for a few hours to soak in more of the atmosphere and drink some more bourbon. At this point, it was probably close to 5ish but the place was still pretty busy; somehow we were able to secure spots at the bar upstairs and made ourselves at home. I wish I could remember the name of our bartender (blame the time that has elapsed, not the bourbon), but he was very good, social without being oppressive and was just present and let us do our thing. After sipping straight bourbon for most of the afternoon, I switched to the Bourbon Renewal, which you'll be shocked to know includes Angel's Envy but is a more summer, fruit-forward cocktail and super refreshing. Was the right call and hit the spot. (We also got waters because that's the responsible thing to do.) We finally went back downstairs to the gift shop, which doesn't feel like the right term - it was more majestic than something you'd walk into after going through, say, a museum for an hour or two. It's enormous and offers numerous bourbons and also some very high quality swag. We reunited with our chum Paula and sampled their limited edition two-grain, which was created due to a fortunate mistake in which the rye wasn't added so it's just the corn and malted barley. You CAN see the difference and taste it; to me at least, it's more caramel-y than their normal single barrel. We each bought a bottle to bring back to the homeland. My chum basically bought half the store, but I remained calm/deliberate and my only other purchase was a MAGNIFICENT black hoodie. I'm not kidding - I love hoodies and have probably owned dozens over the years, and this is literally the best quality one I've had. It has this interesting front pouch pocket design with like a pocket within the pocket for high-priority items like your ID or credit cards, and the hood itself is interesting. It's just really good and I wore it all day the next day as we slowly made our way back to the East Coast. It's been washed and carefully placed in my closet, where it will reign supreme when the weather inevitably turns nippy again. It's not an exaggeration to say we probably spent hundreds of dollars (at least not thousands) directly and indirectly involving Angel's Envy on this trip. Worth it.

I visited in the back half of the day and had an overall good time…read more My favorite part is likely the street being shut down. I love a good pedestrian area, and we as consumers are more likely to go in places when we can leisurely stroll. There was a music stage and a small area for performers, and a few areas with kid centered things. I really enjoyed that all the businesses were open at one time. I've been walking through Nulu before and tried to stop in a shop during the middle of the day only to discover its closed. This really welcomed people in but also made some areas a little crowded. Overall I'm looking forward to next year to see how they continue to expand.

Potterpalooza is a free event that is held once a year at the Louisville Free Public Library downtown. They completely transform the huge space into a muggle-free world. They've got everything from a flight simulator, live animals, potion making, quidditch matches to trivia....they've literally got EVERYTHING here. For food they had The Celtic Pig, which I thought was a great selection (and fit very well) for the occasion. They also had a 21 and over section in the basement, where Against the Grain served beer. This was one of the things I wish could have been better, due to the fact that they only had two IPAs to choose from, and that was the only adult beverage you could get. They did have Heine Bros in the main entrance, too. I absolutely love how everything was decorated. They completely transform the hallway into Diagon Alley, and you can also find platform 9/34 and many other great photo ops. The only other fuss I have is that I wish they had longer hours or had more than one day. The event goes from 6-10, is free, and thousands of people show up. Therefore, literally everything had a super long line, making it near impossible to do everything you want to do. We stayed from beginning to end and still had quite a bit we couldn't do. I also did not like how there were children's craft tables in the middle of the walkways, which made it hard to maneuver around. But now, more great things!! It's awesome how many local businesses this event brings: Carmichael's, SnoWhat, Celtic Pig, Against the Grain, Kentucky Science Center, and a bunch more! Not only that, but including it into the Harry Potter theme in such a creative way. They did have trivia as well, and it was really challenging!! All about the books, and it definitely gets you thinking! Potterpalooza was seriously so much fun. I'm already planning on binge reading/watching the books and movies just to get prepared for next year!!

The event is free so it brings out a huge crowd. There is so much to do. You can get your photo taken at platform 9 3/4, walk down diagon ally, find out which house you belong to and much more. The thing that stuck out was the photo booth where your party can get different props from the movie and just have fun with it. The only source of food at potterpalooza were food trucks but they were good. The best part was the bottom floor was strictly for people 21 and up. They provided beer for everyone and a Harry Potter trivia. Just a heads up, the trivia is hard as hell unless you read the books at least 5 times and know every minor details. Even though the event is fun, there is one thing that I recommend fixing. They should honestly bump the age requirement for the event to 12 and up because it's overrun by kids that most likely have never even seen a Harry Potter movie. That or allow part of the night to strictly be for people 21 and up. It sometimes felt like you were limited on what to do because a kid was in the way or they were spending too much time at one event. I am glad that the Harry Potter franchise is still going on and this event exists. If you're a potterhead and want to nerd out, potterpalooza is the place for you.

I've been to botanical gardens in other cities where the community and local officials don't dedicate resources to it. I'm not sure of the entire breakdown here for funding but I do know they'll obtain a round of funding, build out, and repeat. In the future, this botanical garden will rival some of the best in the country. I don't even think 25% of this place has been developed yet. On the last visit, it was for the holiday light decorations. We got super lucky, arrived, and within 20 minutes it started snowing. It made the experience so worth it. Out of other holiday happenings around town, (Light up downtown, the mega caverns, etc etc), I much preferred this even over all the others. The light decoration isn't the largest but I still think it's worth it. Kids will love it and as long as you're not a grumpy gus(No offense Gus) of a human being, you should have a good time. The gardens part through the spring and summer is also fun but limited. Again, it's going to take time as the years go by but the botanical gardens definitely adds something to the city of Louisville.

This was the home of the famous inventor, Thomas Edison, during his brief time he lived in…read moreLouisville as a teenager (1 and a half years). He conducted some experiments in the house, but the major and most notable ones were done after he was fired from his job and left the city. It is a very small house and there is a lot of free one hour parking on the street in front of the house. It is located in the Butchertown neighborhood, which was known for meat production. This house was built around 1850 and is a shot-gun duplex. It originally had a solid wall running down the center that split the house into two separate domiciles. I came here on a Saturday and the museum was not open. It is only open on certain weekdays. Its tour schedule is very limited. What kind of museum is not open on Weekends? So, all I got to see was the outside, which is pretty plain outside of the historical marker and small. It is well maintained and preserved though. I wish I would have been able to go in the museum, but I guess there is not a lot of demand to see it, so that have limited the time that it is open. Hopefully I will be able to make it back when it is open.

The Louisville area is known for hosting quite a few popular events. Derby events such as thunder…read moreover Louisville, the oaks and the historic Kentucky derby itself. They host big annual concerts such as forecastle and louder than life. However Louisville spookiest and most creative annual event takes place every August in the highlands on the corner of Bardstown road and eastern parkway. It's is known as the Louisville Zombie attack or as locals call it the "zombie walk". This is a free event where people go all out and dress as zombies and other cool creative costumes and they roam around the popular highlands area that is filled with restaurants and bars. They have vendors setup in the street and usually live music and entertainment. The event is well secured and patrolled by local Lmpd and have barricades/port o pots and things setup to contain the big living dead bash. Even zombies neee barriers and potty breaks! This is kid friendly. While it can be spooky for some kids (it is a zombie walk) the people out for frights usually don't mess with the little ones and are more then willing to stop for photo ops With the little ones. If your child scares easy then I would skip it. However, I'd say it's main audience is adults. It's usually on a Friday or Saturday night and highlands is a popular bar area so there is lots of drinking and dancing activities around including in the live music and beer tent area. The whole walk back and forth maybe takes an hour or so and they do shut it down after certain times. We usually just get dressed up find a place to street park and circle around a few times and take in the sites and fun . The bars and restaurants are open but we usually skip eating because the crowds are so large. From my understanding this started as a flash mob in 2005. And slowly became what it is today. I think we've been to this annual late August event 3-4 times and we have loved it every year we have attended. It's the event we look forward to the most annually. With it being in late August it puts you in the spooktacular mood for Halloween coming up right around the corner. Lots of fun and highly recommend checking out if you enjoy Halloween or spooky type things.

Gotta say -- not too impressed with the latest iteration of the annual Louisville Zombie Attack…read more This used to be one of my favorite weird Louisville traditions (as you can see from my previous review). But it was recently taken over by another business and permanently moved to a Saturday, rather than annually on Aug. 29. And with it being on a Saturday, it seemed so much bigger than in years past and with that came more drunkenness and rowdiness. Holding the event on weekdays may have kept some of that back. As odd as it may sound, the Louisville Zombie Attack was much more well behaved in the past. There were many more kids and teenagers, and while there was drinking, the undead masses were out in the best spirits and seemed excited to be a part of a great event that was welcoming to everybody. This year, though, people were making out and over indulging, even with scores of kids around them. It reminded me more of the worst of the St. Patrick's Day festivities. I and my husband got pushed off of the sidewalk into the street by people who were drunk and oblivious. We saw a few people come up right next to the kids we were standing by, smoking. And while I hate -- HATE -- smoking, I hate it even more that these people were so inebriated that they were waving around their cigarettes, coming way too close to burning the kids. It was hard to see through all of this if the parade was managed properly; perhaps it was. But my hope is that the zombie attack becomes more about, well, the zombies and a great time overall for all, rather than just a drunken mess.

I enjoyed the Revival Cathedral and Rhubarb Revelation specialty cocktails made with Heaven's Door Whiskey. Both were refreshing and went down smoothly. I didn't try any food but many folks around me seemed to enjoy their meals and drinks. Notes: I came on a Sunday around dinner time and it was packed. Luckily, I found a seat at the bar because someone was just leaving when I arrived. Bartender was welcoming, friendly, helpful and attentive all while serving back to back customers. The decor, stained glass, chandeliers, and walls filled with bottles was really cool to see. Great ambiance for small or large groups. Tons of seating at bar, tables, and comfy side chairs. I'd like to come back with family and friends to enjoy other drinks and try their food next time.

This establishment shares a parking lot with long time Lousiville staple diamonds and milewide brewing just off Barrett lane in a very popular bar scene in the Louisvilel highlands area. As soon as you walk in downtown his bright yellow establishment the inside ha a contrasting dark lit atmosphere like a movie theatre. That would be because it kinda is a small movie theatre. You walk in downtown heights a hallway filled with nostalgic movie characters and to the left is the full service bar and right in front of you is the seating section with a projector pumping out some of your favorite 80's and 90's cult hits. It was October when me and my buddy Jeremy came here so they was playing a Halloween favorite sleepy hollow. We sat down immediately and glanced at there clever drink menu all themed after cult hit movies and stars of the the two aforementioned decades. My buddy isn't much of a mix drinker so he went with a bourbon and coke. I was feeling nostalgic so I got one of the fun drinks. I ordered a cinna-bite drink (Tito's vodka, coffee and cinnamon). While we waited we browsed around checking out the very cool and nostalgic decor and went on the other side of the bar to check out the rental section to bring back all the nostalgic feels of combing through a blockbuster in our youth. Our drinks came out quickly and our waiter was super nice and helpful. It appeared they had some regulars there for a trivia night and he asked us if we wanted to participate but we had to be somewhere soon. But I'm sure it would have been cool to do. My buddy liked his beam and coke. Classic drink that's hard to mess up. My specialty drink was very good. I'm not a huge coffee guy and the cinnamon and vodka had very good and distinct flavors. Very tasty and potentially dangerous I guess because you would have no idea that drink had any hard liquor in it. Upon leaving I noticed they had a ghost busters hi-c ecto cooler (y'all remember those?) hard drink. When I come back I'll have to try that. I'm sure it's great as well. Overall, awesome place with an amazingly fun and nostalgic vibe. Great and creative drinks and a friendly staff. I can see this being a cool spot to come and hang out when I have more spare time. Highly recommended any child of the 80s/90s to check this place out. You will not regret it.
