Keon's is as good as any restaurant you'll find in Boston, with prices that are pleasantly less expensive. We've been back to Keon's multiple times since my first review below, and it's always been a pleasant and enjoyable dining experience. The atmosphere is dark, romantic, and cozy. Although some of the seating is sandwiched into small areas in the dining room, you can always ask to move to something else if not to your liking. The booths up-front are the best seats. The service, for us, has always been attentive without being overbearing. The food has remained top notch. The filet is simply like nothing you'll ever taste except at some of the best restaurants in the country. It melts in your mouth. The seafood is always delicious and prepared correctly (e.g., not overcooked). We've never had a bad meal or dish there (and I've tried most of them). A frequent diner's tip: go during mid-week if you can. Not only will you get the restaurant at it's best with less crowds (and noise), you'll also be able to take advantage of their mid-week specials. It's a great gem in the city and well worth it if you want a special night out. Reservations are always recommended because of the small dining room. read more

NOT impressed! It is dark, and tight. The weekday specials aren't too bad, considering, but I have to say that I was disappointed in the quality. The "chef" seems to temp things as he pleases, and not as ordered. There were 2 filets at my table, neither came out to temp. One was sent back, and I brought the problem to the attention of the owner I was told that it was "just the lighting in the restaurant". I have worked in some very nice restaurants, and know my temps, and what they should look like. That was Medium, not rare.when the other stake returned it was undercooked, so we simply swapped plates, as my friend's was closer to the temp I had ordered, and vice versa. We were offered dessert on the house, but we declined. I will just not return. The waitress was very nice, and did her job well. I was just very turned off by the time we left. read more

Okay, the place is TINY! Scared to think how the night would have gone if we went in the middle of the dinner rush (ie. make a reservation), but as it turns out we squeaked in for a late dinner... and boy was it yummy!. We were immediately greated by the owner (big fan of restaraunts the owners like to be a part of) with a big smile and a promise to find us a seat within a few minutes. I laughed, looking at the full tables, but sure enough we were sitting and had drinks no more than five minutes later. The bartender was super nice, and offered creative, off the top of her head drinks (also a fan of!). Food was fabulous! I was a little dissapointed the lobster app special had already run out, but I suppose that's what you get when you show up late for dinner :) Would suggest the trio dish (whose name escapes me at the moment) with steak, chicken and shrimp.... AWSOME! Real low key feel, warm and happy would be the best way to describe it. Will definately make this a regular stop (as regular as you can get with kids). read more

Keon's gets a 5 star based solely on my love for the Spinach and Arrugala Salad. Check this out: "Baby spinach and arrugula tossed in a warm bacon-dijon vinaigrette with shaved red onions, apple wood bacon, toasted almonds, and smoked gouda croutons" The most important words in that description: Gouda croutons & BACON Heaven on a plate. I've seriously never craved a salad before. A salad! But this thing has me drooling on my keyboard as I type. Ohhhh those gouda croutons. But I did have to deduct one star. Why? Well the Korean BBQ Pork and the Fried Oysters were not "all that" like the salad. They were OK but not amazing. Add that to the fact that it's a pain in the patoot to try and get in here on a Friday or Saturday night (they are closed Sunday). Prices are a bit high for entrees but if you go for a drink and an app, you can manage not to blow your budget. So I'd go more often, if I could get in and the drawbacks don't keep me from loving Keon's. It just keeps my love at a distance. read more

This was a solid dining experience. I went with my Haverhill buddy and we had the dinner special -- 2 entrees, shaker or martinis or bottle of wine for $59 (plus tax). Since my lovely friend is not a wine drinker, we opted for the shaker of martinis. We got the key lime martini which came with whipped cream. Believe or not, it tasted like key lime and it was not overly sweet nor too creamy. We were given a loaf of warm, fresh bread and some kind of hummus to start and it was very enjoyable and helped absorb some of the martini. I ordered the cider glazed pork shop with mashed potatoes and carrots. It was marinated well and grilled to perfection. I don't often get a chop when I am out because they come either undercooked or overcooked. This was perfect. Wonderful grill marks and seared on the outside, juicy on the inside. The cider glaze was an amazing sweet but not cloying touch. The carrots were cooked well and were also not overdone. When the Yukon mashed potatoes had the glaze on them, they were really good but on their own, they were loose and not flavorful. My companion tried them and said she thought it was the mashed cauliflower (not a fave flavor of mine) but I asked and it was the potato. I will be back and I imagine my rating will go up then ... I hear the Spinach and Arugula Salad are fabu! read more

starting Monday (4/5/10) they're adding $1 oysters from 5-630p M-F. YAY!!! edit- stopped by Keon's last thursday (4/8/10) for a Pint and a few oysters. they were serving Malpeque Oysters (they only offer one variety at a time) with a siracha cocktail sauce and a classic mignonette. true to what i was told the oysters were fresh, properly stored and opened expertly. and from talking with the Staff they are quite popular at $1 a pop. read more

We stopped in on a whim, and it was nice! To start, the meal came with bread. The bread is plain, but somehow very satisfying to eat. The texture is kind of dough-chewy, and fluffy. Big fans. and I haven't even started talking about the food yet. The lobster-corn fritters were sort of more potato than either lobster or corn, but they were fun to eat, very poofy and light. The crab cakes were fine, not too many peppers. The Korean BBQ pork-- we'll come back specifically to order 3 plates of this. Not traditional at all, but so surprisingly delicious. They came with fresh potato "chips" and horseradish-mustard sauce. I was iffy about potato chips coming with my pork, but it was great. The tenderloin tips were good, a little tough to cut, but not to chew. The flavor was really good, and the mashed potatoes and asparagus were cooked perfectly. I don't even like asparagus. Ambiance wise, the place is nice-- pretty, intimate, not too crowded. The waitress was pleasant and patient with us, since we took about 20 minutes to figure out what we wanted to eat, and she gave a great recommendation for wine. We'll be back for sure! read more

I visited my children on the east coast in Boston and South Carolina, and we love to try new restaurants, so eating out happens quite often. Keon's was one of the upscale, pricey places I ate - and the food and service were horrible. I had a pasta dish that was completely tasteless. They weren't busy, but the hostess and serve staff were enjoying conversations that were more important than noticing how long we'd been seated, and that our menus were on the table. We waited much longer than we should have for our order to be taken, and for our check to be processed. Of course, when the food is good - all is forgiven. It sucked. I get a bit mad at myself when I don't send food back after that initial deplorable taste, but it makes my daughter uncomfortable - so I swallowed that plastic mess. New to the area and with a guest in town, we'd heard about Keon's so we decided to give it a shot. Given the one thing we kept hearing was "pricey" we called to confirm what was appropriate attire at Keon'. The answer? A good natured chuckle, "Clothes," and a mention that inappropriate tshirts aren't allowed. Fantastic. We're expecting primo food and a casual dining experience. Keon's met our expectation and then some. I'll start with a small detail I really like: the waitstaff aren't wearing stuffy button-up shirts and ties, black pants and aprons. They were nicely dressed but also casual enough....it really lent itself to the casual atmosphere, making them seem more approachable and friendly and sets the tone perfectly. Our party of three ordered, as appetizers, a side Caeser salad, a tomato and mozzarella salad and steamed muscles. My evidence all three were excellent: we all stopped talking and ate. The tables are a little tight in the small space so I'm sure the women sitting aside us were happy, too. Entrees were a butter crusted haddock, a grilled sea bass and the pulled short ribs. The fish looked fresh and I'm told it both were excellent. I'm allergic so I'll take them at their word. That my husband and his father liked a restaurant so much they both want to go back speaks volumes. My boneless shortribs were tender and moist but I'd have liked more sauce. The mashed potatoes they were served with were light, fluffy and also moist. I don't generally expect a lot of out a mashed potato but these were some seriously flavorful potatoes. Yes, the prices were in the neighborhood of $25-$30 per entree but the portions were nice and you can tell the kitchen sends dishes out with pride, not just to fill a ticket. Our waitress was attentive yet not intrusive and I was also very pleased to have the manager (or perhaps owner, I'm not sure) come over and and greet our table and check back later in the meal. Keon's is an excellent restaurant and one of several good restaurants in Downtown Haverhill, MA. The restaurant is small, so make a reservation. They do take out too. Parking can be a challenge in Downtown Haverhill sometimes, but I think they have valet parking on some nights. The pan seared Chilean Sea Bass with Risotto was delicious. It has since been replaced on the menu with pan seared Halibut, which also is very good. The mash potatoes are yummy, and the Texas Crab Cakes and Korean BBQ Pork appetizers are definitely worth a try. Simply put, you won't find better food north of Boston. read more

Best restaurant in Haverhill by far. Been dying to try Keons for a while. I knew it was small and probably needed a reservation. We had tried calling a few times for a reservation, but no one ever picked up the phone, so we assumed it would be too busy. But as Luck would have it, on a Friday night when another nearby favorite was closed for the month we decided to head over. Walked in and the place was buzzing.... Hunted down staff to ask how long the wait was... do you have a reservation... um no.... well I can seat you in maybe 10 minutes.. I'll be back in two minutes to get your drink order.... Seriously? The place was packed, we did not have reservations and we got better service than most places when we HAVE a reservation. Within minutes they found a place for us at the bar, with the offer to move to a table if needed. 5 stars for service!!! The atmosphere is really cool and fun,and cozy, very Boston South End. Great place for a date. The food- AMAZING. The options are great and everything was cooked perfectly. The scallop appetizer was tasty and I would recommend it. For main course, I had salmon with some sort of apricot glaze- YUM. My date had a plate with chicken, steak and shrimp. I have never tasted such perfectly cooked shrimp at a restaurant before. And the mashed potatoes... well I would be happy eating those for the rest of my life if I had to pick one thing to sustain upon. Oh so good. Finally the steak... oh the steak.... words cannot describe how melty and tasty it was. It was tender steak goodness. I look forward to returning. read more

Tonight was my due date and baby is late so we went to Keons with a coupon we got online. The waitress didn't treat us any differently even though we showed the coupon up front. We shared the candied bacon scallops which were fantastic! Sweet, salty, crunchy corn sauce and perfectly cooked scallops. My husband got the sirloin which was huge and cooked perfectly the way he likes it. Beer was cold (for him) and ginger ale was bubbly (for me). I enjoyed the three brothers (shrimp, steak and chicken) and it was delicious! The steak was tender and cooked just how I like it. The potatoes were creamy. We both took food home to save room for dessert. The tiramisu was wonderful. Tasted fresh, not soggy and was large enough to share. The server was sweet, gave great suggestions, personable and checked in frequently. We will be back. And don't worry... we tipped as if we didn't have the coupon. Always! read more

I like this local restaurant. We were very lucky because Leslie seated us and waited on us. We have met Leslie previously and know what great service she provides. We really enjoyed our meals. We shared the salad with the goat cheese (there was plenty) and enjoyed the bread served with homemade hummus. Our drinks were made to order and very good. Our entree's were excellent. Joe had the bolognese with parpadelle and I enjoyed the osso bucco which came with polenta mixed with fig. I didn't think I would eat the polenta, but I was wrong. I enjoyed it thoroughly. We didn't have any room left for dessert. I would have no problem recommending Keon's to anyone. Enjoy! read more

First things first... my spinach and arugula salad was great right up until I found a 4-5 inch strip of plastic wrap mixed in with it as if it was part of the salad. I pulled it out and set it on a plate separate from the salad. It took the server so long to swing around that I really just wanted to leave and saw no point in making a fuss. Of course, I was hoping that she would apologize after seeing it on her own. That's clearly not what happened. When she finally came over to grab the plates she looked right at the plastic and even picked up the end of it to flip it back up onto the plate so that none would be hanging off... it was as if it BELONGED there. I was horrified that she was Not horrified. Alright, now that that's out of the way... This looks like a great place to take a date on a weeknight. They had some pretty good looking specials and seem to be very interesting in selling wine and martinis. The price of the food seemed representative of what was served. There were what seemed to be several employees working for what didn't appear to be all that busy of a Tuesday night. This seemed to provide a bit too much time for socializing among staff rather than paying attention to customers. Came in for the dinner special, it was great. I had the pork chop, which was easily the best tasting pork chop I have ever had. Not quite sure how you can make a pork chop be so juicy and fantastic, but yeah, get it. We also had some sort of trio with steak, chicken, and shrimp. It was great too, the shrimp were cooked perfectly. The special is $60 I think and you get a shaker (2 drinks) of martini or a bottle of wine and two entrees. If the weather allows for it, sit outside, it is the only thing that I would have done differently. Lamb chop lollipops( med rare), Prosciutto wrap asparagus, pork egg rolls and some beet/cheese thing my wife ordered and I did not taste. We rate them in order (From 1worst - 5best ) 3, 3, 4, and 3. Small place, some of the 2 person tables in the back are right on top of each other. Upscale (especially for Haverhill) and excellent. If you want a great nighttime meal, then this is it. Food is top shelf. And is has atmosphere like the places of old. First, when you find a restaurant that does something right - go with it. And that is Keon's muscles as an appeitizer. The Cider Glased Pork Chop or Cranberry-Cornbeard Chicken are two non-traditional New England dishes that will knock your socks off. If I made a million dollars, I'd eat here more. My wife and I visited this bar/restaurant for the first time the other day, and quite the experience! Starting with the short ribs, these were super tender and delicious. My wife ordered the filet, I ordered the scallops. The roasted cauliflower puree was phenomenal, we both loved it. The bacon & raisin chutney was perfectly prepared and full of flavor. I ended up giving my wife half the chutney, as it complimented her steak (which was cooked spot-on, but lacked a bit of flavor). I recommend everyone try the chutney! We split a crème brule', which was a little too sweet for out palette (with the caramel drizzle and powdered sugar). Service was top notch. One of my largest critiques would have been the seating; it's a fairly small place, we were seated in a booth next to the kitchen, with a rather loud/obnoxious table next to us (and being tucked in a corner, it amplified/contained the noise), which detracted from our dining experience, and the bench seats were very uncomfortable. Halfway through the meal, I slid my jacket underneath me as a cushion I was that uncomfortable. If in the area, I'd definitely go back to Keon's and try a couple other options on their spectacular menu. read more

Living in Plaistow, NH (after growing up in the city) I struggle to get excited about a night out at a chain restaurant. So having Keon's just 10 minutes away is phenomenal. Yes - it's a small restaurant, the booths are hard/old style church pews, the service can be a tiny bit slow.. but the food is phenomenal. We went for dinner last Wednesday. My husband had the super-garlicky mussels and we dipped the bread to drain the juice in the bowl. I was super happy to see the tuna duet appetizer (it was gone for a long time) - super fresh, clean, perfect level of spice. My butter-poached lobster was amazing, I was surprised by the cold avocado/corn salsa but the fresh pea risotto was delicious. read more

This place is still fantastic. This time around they overdid it a tad on the salt seasoning on my steak, but no big deal. I got the 59$ dinner for two meal again, with the filet again. The girlie got the Three Brothers, and I did have a bite of her chicken, which was moist like I couldn't believe. The filet, as I said, was a bit oversalted, but not enough to warrant complaining about since it was otherwise delicious. The sauce still tastes like buttery maple syrup, mashed taters are great. While I was tempted to knock a star off for the salt, I gotta add it back for the service. We showed up about 15-20 minutes before our reservation and it was packed. The woman who came to see us (who was later our waitress) told us that we were a bit early, but they either had a small table we could take now or we could come back in 20 minutes and they'd have a bigger table. Okay. Sure. So we leave, go across the street to the Lasting Room to watch a bit of college football and have a Sam Winter, and come back 20 minutes later. True to her word, nice big table for the both of us. Clutch. And again, she comes through. We both decide to try wine for once. And we ask her for recommendations. But she's not a wine drinker either; and STILL comes up with a good recommendation based on just talking to people and knowing what everyone else likes. It's one thing for a wine drinker to know, but a whole other thing to not drink it and still know what to recommend, the wine was pretty good. Other than that, she was awesome. Came over just enough, friendly, chatted with us for a bit. Even got me a copy of the cookbook to read through when I was asking about it. I can't remember her name, but she looked to be between 40 and 50 with short brown hair and glasses. Super nice and awesome. Oh. And got the bread pudding. Heaven. I thought that I gave up on doing Yelp reviews but I had to post a review after visiting Keon's last night. 5 stars no question. The service was excellent and super friendly. They had an amazing deal for 2 entrees and a bottle of wine for $59!! Unbelievable! The pork appetizer was outstanding and I will come back just for that at the bar very soon. My steak (medium-rare) was cooked to perfection and rivaled any of the big steak places in the city. Contrary to some peoples comments the place was not overcrowded and we were seated immediately with our reservation @ 8:30 on a Thursday night. I can't wait to go back! read more

Yum! Our waitress (Leslie) was wonderful, knowledgeable and friendly. Started with seared scallop rissito, delicious, cooked to perfection. I had the swordfish which was great, the sauce a little on the sweet side but the spinach and crispy potato saved it! Easily one of my favorite restaurants in Haverhill, if not all of Mass! It's very intimate and they have a great menu, always changing and always delicious. We started with the no bone pork over cranberry coleslaw and lobster and shrimp risotto , very strong start , it was very good , the bread very good but hummus threw it off as it was warm bread and the hummus didn't go great with the bread. I had the veal Marsala , creamy , thick over stuffed mushroom ravolies. Very good , but one of my pieces of veal was raw. Which you know three a little wrench in it . My fiancé got four cheese raviolis but it was fried and wasn't great nothing compared to how great my ravs were, my mushroom ravs in the veal Marsala was excellent . The desert we ended with a three layer chocolate cake over raspberry drizzle sauce. Cake was very good. . The beer was a little skunk (Stella ). For Haverhill , the overall rating was a 7.5 , for boston or somewhere a little more upscale it would be a 6 Out of 10 . read more

I want to be clear that I don't give a one-star rating lightly. Also, this rating is for the awful service we had at the bar, not for the food. We sat at the bar because the tables were all reserved. Our server/bartender (blonde female - never gave her name) was inattentive at best and downright neglectful for the most part. Here's what happened: 1. I ordered a gin martini with a twist. After about five minutes she came back to ask me to remind her of what I had ordered. The bar was not crowded at this time. I have no idea why it took her so long. When the drink finally came it had two olives instead of a twist. When I reminded her that I had wanted a twist, she removed the olives and then brought me a twist. It was remarkably unprofessional! I did not want olive juice in my drink! She offered no apology. 2. Before we got a chance to order, a friend of hers walked into the restaurant and sat at the bar. She proceeded to turn her back to the entire bar and talk with her friend for about 10 minutes. We were ready to order for quite awhile and we had not way to get her attention.She never even glanced back at her customers at any point. She reached over the bar several times to hug and kiss her friend but never took that opportunity to look behind her. Finally, I spoke up very loudly to tell her we were ready to order. She gave me this deadpan look and said, "yeah,ok." I was ready to walk out at that point, but a friend had given us a very generous gift card at Christmas to this place so I figured - we are here now, let's do it. 3. Eventually I ordered another cocktail. She never brought it over. I waited for awhile and watched as she filled the drink orders of other bar patrons. Finally, I lost interest and decided I wasn't going to get another drink and we would head around the corner to Essex Street Grille for a drink and MUCH better service. Suddenly she showed up with my drink! Instead of apologizing for the 20 minute delay, she told me that someone in the restaurant had sent me this drink. She said she couldn't remember who it was!! It was so shocking a lie that all I could do was just stare at her. We paid up and walked out soon after. Quite easily the worst service I have ever had. read more

My boyfriend and I have gone here twice and both times were amazing. We went on a whim when his dad came to visit and the service and food was impeccable so we made reservations for Valentine's Day. Our food was pretty good and our server was excellent. Where Keon's loses points is the atmosphere. Yes, it is small and cozy -- I have no problem with that. The issue is the noise level. We had a reservation for 6:30 on a Friday evening and it was pretty quiet when we first got in. However, things picked up quickly and by the time we were into our meal and dessert my husband and I couldn't hear each other across a small table. Again -- no points lost on food or service. But, if you are looking for an intimate experience with conversation over dinner, try another restaurant. That all having been said, a weeknight might be different. read more

I love this place, it is cool and mellow with some of the best food in the region. I would compare it to any fine steak house in a major city. The first time I came to Keon's my wife and I were just out for a local evening trying out the restaurants. We were not disappointed. The second visit there I was given a gift card by my boss for fixing his home computer. Our fifth trip to Keon's and it only gets better. My wife and I for our first anniversary had only one place in mind, Keon's. We started with the Texas crab cakes and having previously lived in the crab/ Pacific capital of the world Seattle, we were not disappointed. Next came the entrees, I had the Three Brothers which I have had before and love. I have had a few other items on the menu but always come back to this. It seems like everyone I talk to about Keon's also loves this dish so I know it's not just me. My wife had the Maine lobster with risotto and loved it. She has been talking about it for the past few months and couldn't wait to have it again. I grew up on steamed lobster (still love it) but I love variations on it. As we were finishing up our meal the owner, Alan, came to our table to see how everything was and introduce himself. In this chain restaurant dominated world I think it's great when the owner is involved in the day to day activities of the restaurant and is personally accountable for the food served. Since it was our anniversary he offered to buy us dessert! 364 days of the year I can't turn down this offer but when you have a cake at home made by Caitron of the Mixing Bowl, you are in heaven which brings me on to my next review... Keons is a hit with us, well worth checking out read more

For Haverhill it's definitely 5 star... if this were Boston I wouldn't give it 5 stars. The biggest flaw is seeing someone on meth walking down the street as you enjoy a good meal to remind you that it can never be a perfect moment. It's a good value overall for Haverhill! read more
