I decided to ship my car across the country, from New York City to Southern California. I live in NYC but grew up in CA and usually spend the summers there. This summer, I thought it would make sense to just move my car to CA because it wasn't getting enough use in NYC. I didn't need to do it this summer, but decided to call around just in case anyone would be able to pick up the car that day. Unfortunately, no luck until I called Kerb (I called them because they had good ratings on Yelp). At first, they didn't have any availability and I resigned myself to just shipping my car later in the fall. But then they called me back a couple hours later to tell me that they were able to find an opening and a guy could come get my car at 8 or 9pm that night. I was overjoyed. I'd never shipped a car before, so if you're like me you might appreciate knowing a bit about what happened. I took my car to a large nearby parking lot (a Home Depot) and the guy came with a little tow truck to take it. I felt a bit strange handing my car off to a total stranger but was immediately put at ease--the guy was super friendly (we chatted about California, where I grew up and where he had lived for a while). He was also professional about filling out the necessary paperwork. I felt really good about the interaction and comfortable about handing my car off to him. I flew out to CA the next day, and during the 11 days it took to get my car across the country they texted me a couple times to keep me updated about when the car was set to arrive. I had two options: either I could meet them at their Southern CA "terminal" in Westminster to pick up the car or they could take the car closer to my place in Long Beach (which would take another day or two). I decided to meet them in Westminster. When I got there, I saw that it wasn't really a "terminal" like I was expecting but just an apartment complex and a large back street spacious enough for the truck to fit. The truck driver had basically just arrived and was still unloading cars. My car had already been unloaded and was parked on the street. It had arrived dusty but safe and in one piece! Both the truck driver and the guy in charge of things in CA (Barry) were super friendly. I feel so grateful to have been referred to Kerb moving for my relocation of a studio apartment from Jersey City to Atlanta. Decided to go with Kerb, mainly because they were the fastest to reply with a quote that I felt was reasonable. My 72 year old mother was moving from Flushing to Somerville and with me living in California, I had to pick a company that could pack everything safely and move it 2 hours away across state lines without me being there. To say I was nervous is an understatement because my mother had not moved in 32 years and I had to basically trust Kerb to move all her belongings. Problem #1: My mother does not speak very good English and I was expecting to be on the phone all day directing the movers. The movers were scheduled for 9am on a Saturday... They showed up at 8:40 am because I told them my situation and that they would basically be doing everything. Mom called me as soon as they arrived and the driver asked me if I had any special instructions and that is where the second problem was. Problem #2: My mother has a lot of antique figurines and china. About 32 years of collecting worth. They're not super expensive, but my mother would have been crushed if anything got broken. 1 hour later the driver sends me a picture of all the antiques wrapped up and put in their own moving bin with blankets to keep them from breaking. This review is long overdue. I used Kerb to move both my apartment furnishings and car cross country earlier this year, and it was a horrible, stressful and overpriced experience. For the car pickup, the man lied to me and tried to scam me. I had a new car that had sat in a covered garage due to Covid and was in perfect condition with almost no miles. He inspected the car and said there was no damage to document, and asked me to sign the pickup form on his phone. When I clicked on "inspection report", he had noted more than a dozen dings on my car. When I asked him about it, he said "oh, I'll remove it", did a few things on his phone, and gave it back to me to sign. I again checked the damage report and he had not removed it. I told him I would not give him the car unless this was accurate. He also did not want to include the odometer reading. Entire experience was a fight to avoid being scammed. For the apartment move, I chose Kerb, who was $1,500 more than other quotes, because they said (i) Kerb movers would be the sole moving company for all stages, (ii) my furnishings would be delivered in 2 weeks and the 3 weeks listed in the contract adds in a buffer in case there's some unknown circumstance out of their control, (iii) I would have a single point of contact with Kerb and (iv) I would get daily texts letting me know where my items were. All of this was false. (i) There was a different moving company for pickup, bringing my items cross country, and then delivery in NY. When I flagged this, Kerb gave me some nonsense answer about how these other movers work exclusively with Kerb. Just not true. (ii) My items did not even arrive within the 3 week outer window which included the buffer for unknown events. I called Kerb TEN DAYS after my items were picked up from my apt in CA because I had not heard a word from them, and my stuff had not even left the warehouse in CA!!! There was no way they were meeting the 2 weeks they estimated - turns out they still had drop offs in TX and in several places along the southern east coast before deliverying to me. They ultimately tried to blame missing the outer window on a few days of being delayed in TX due to bad weather, but that's what the buffer was for. I understand that my items might not have been shipped from CA on the day of pickup, but TEN DAYS of sitting in a warehouse seems extreme especially since they told me they do the cross country route often. Giving someone an estimate of 2 weeks and then holding their items in storage for TEN DAYS before shipping seems very disingenuous. After complaining about them missing the 3 week outer limit in the contract, I got a de minimus refund. (iii) I did not have a single point of contact at Kerb. I spoke to several different customer service agents, had to reexplain things multiple times over email, and did not experience the convenient service they ensured. (iv) I did not get daily texts without having to remind them several times that I was ensured daily updates. I will be sharing this with the BBB so others can benefit from knowledge of this horrible experience. read more
