I held the change in my hand and said I had given her a $20 bill. I knew I was right because a purposely wanted to cash the $20 and have some change. At first she picked up the $20 in the cash register but when boss came over to see about the discussion she then switched the $20 for a $10 bill from the same drawer And said this is what I had given her. Owner sided with the worker and lost a customer. I hate to think she decided she could get over on a senior.

Chatham's generally a pleasant sleepy downtown next town over from me in Summit…read more Well, except for one bad place down the street from Chatham Bagels (see my other reviews) but this little hole in the wall (pun intended) had a line out the door as I drove by on Memorial Day and a line means fine. Rainy miserable day today so since I had a rainy miserable ten hour work session at home day ahead, I stopped by. Now I'm not some bagel aficionado but one lady next to me on line who looked like she knew from bagels. She cheerfully regaled the weary line by raving she can't find any good bagels in Connecticut so when she's in Chatham town, she loads up on these. True to her word, she left with a sack of 'em. She had also ordered ahead but waited in line anyway - polite is fantastic. Guy next to her on line engaged her about Fairfield Connecticut where his son went to college. He crowed in a friendly way that his son encountered "like minded people" at the local college m and that was soon followed by mentioning Wall Street jobs and his son's "sugar momma". Why do I mention the on-line patter banter? Because it illustrated how Chatham types are generally convivial so I'd expect no less friendly chit chat if you go to Chstham Bagels and if you happen to be "like minded", of course. Blabbing passed the time while the two quiet Chatham Bagel men were working their tails off cranking out all orders fresh. Lastly? I just finished my bagel sandwich and pretty darn good! And just maybe enjoying the morning magic of preparing and enjoying good bagels makes everyone like minded here!

The bagels had some crisp on the bottom where it had browned but almost none on the top. The dough has a welcome bit of flavor to it, as if they use just enough salt in the recipe to elevate the bready taste. This is a fluffy-style bagel but it has slightly more structure than others in the category, so it has a slight edge when making sandwiches. The cream cheese was light and smooth, so complemented it well.

Now in Massachusetts Sloppy Joe is ground meat in tomato based sauce. Like loose ground meat. New Jersey has a different sandwich. Probably a guy named Joe but a different guy. Still sloppy, though. It's in the back. Have to access from DeForest Ave. Behind the big parking lot across from CVS. First hour to park in that lot is free. I think 35 cents transaction fee. Pretty fast service. Cramped place but very clean.

Same owners of the place next door - Fable & Flame. Anyway - always fresh bagels. Especially enjoy the jalapeno. Their coffee is no syrup brewed flavors. My favorite is Jamaican Me Nuts. It was 1:45, they close at 2:30. This kind of clean up should happen after you close. I will never go back again. If they have this much contempt for customers I will down my money elsewhere! The bagels have a crisp exterior and give a satisfying crunch with each bite. This is a slightly denser bagel with appreciable chew -- you end up spending time with it. Fortunately, the dough has some bready flavor to it so it's an enjoyable bite. The cream cheese is thick, but the dense bagel holds up to spreading. Take note: the bagel does not need toasting when fresh. It became harder than needed to hold together on the sandwich.
