I like both of the dentists. The hygienists seem perfectly competent (even if they exhibit varying degrees of bedside manner). Rates are high -- but that is typical. What I don't like -- and the primary reason I didn't give this practice 5 stars -- is the rather lackluster front desk staff. Actually, "lackluster" is being kind. Based on my most recent experiences, "lackadaisical" would be a more accurate description. And even that is being generous. The last time I checked out after my appointment, one young woman at the front desk looked to be half asleep and barely hid her boredom and contempt when she had to briefly engage with me. Ok, I get it -- you don't like your job and you were meant for better things -- but can't you even pretend to be somewhat friendly and responsive to patients? I thought that was the bare minimum for any front desk personnel, but at this front desk, asking for the bare minimum can be asking for too much. (Note: not all of the front desk people are rude/disinterested, but lately, this is the general vibe, and it can be quite off-putting. It's too bad, because otherwise, this practice could be really good...I'm surprised the dentists here are not more aware of this rather glaring problem...or maybe they are and just don't care?). Dr. Growney and his team are fantastic. I originally chose their Franklin St. office because it was convenient when I was living in the marina, in San Francisco, but have been a loyal patient for probably decade, despite moving out of the city and becoming a digital nomad traveling all over the world, and ultimately living over an hour away. Visits have always been smooth, fast, easy, and pleasant. Everyone is friendly and professional. Hands down, Dr. Growney has got to be the BEST dentist I've ever gone to. He never rushes through my appointments and explains everything in detail, stopping to answer any of my questions along the way. Right out the gate, at my very first appointment his warmth and professionalism immediately put me at ease. He's just a very good dentist, period. I recently had a cavity filled, and he was extremely meticulous about his work, making sure everything was perfect and that I was comfortable. When he pulled out the novocaine syringe topped with the menacing needle, childhood memories of deep and painful scorpion-like pinches came to mind, and I seriously thought I was going to freak. (Mind you he did offer something to alleviate anxiety but I stubbornly passed...I always try to front like I'm not a wimp...but deep inside I'm the biggest baby.) Honestly, Dr Growney and his staff were about as exceptional as you can get. I had just had the dental experience from hell earlier in the day (Van Ness Dental should be investigated by the Board of Dentistry). I called around 12 to ask Franklin Dental for a second opinion. The woman who answered the phone was sweet, warm, and calm. She said she could get me in at 1 or at 3:30. Not only could they get me in the same day.... They gave me options! I was so relieved! I went in and met the team. The waiting room had good (read: relevant!) magazines and a really comfortable couch (these things matter!). I met Dr Growney and he was so down to earth. I told him about my previous experience and he transformed in to the "big brother who takes on the nefarious bully". It was like every one in the office assumed a sense of betrayal along with me. As a result, they seemed to bend over backwards to accommodate me. I'm sure, though, they treat everyone that way and I'm just not quite accustomed to that type of doctoral experience. An experience is signed and sealed with the presence of a good staff. The girls there were fantastic. Truly fantastic. They were able to get me in for a follow up two days later. As one guy says to another after meeting the new girlfriend: "[he's] a keeper." Highly highly highly recommended. read more

My experience today (after reading all of the stellar reviews): walk in to the office to make an appointment with Dr Growney, and after hearing I don't have insurance was met with a muffled quasi-chuckle by the receptionist. "We would set you up with Dr so and so then. His prices are much cheaper". "Well I really wanted to see Dr Growney since I'm here because of Yelp. How much are his prices?". $275 for cleaning + radiation. The receptionist then tried to discourage me again stating "and the prices can really add up but he does give his clientelle without insurance a 10% discount." I had a chipped front tooth & Dr. Growney made it look as good as new! Great bedside manner. Very in tune with how his patient is feeling painwise. He takes the time to explain what he's going to do to your mouth and he does so in a clear, concise way. I also get the sense he is very well versed in the latest advances in dentistry. He is also the only dentist I have gone to who actually reads and understands insurance benefits. With past dentists, they would always direct me to an office assistant who really couldn't give a damn. With Dr. Growney, he reviewed my benefits on the spot and recommended a course of action based on that. He also doesn't recommend anything unnecessary. Plus, he was able to extend my appointment to include some unplanned composites. Very accommodating! **NOTE: I went to his Embarcadero office. Three stars cuz he dropped some amalgam and it ended up in my hair.....really hard to get out! Had to cut it. Not fun. read more

I am a horrible patient. I routinely miss appointments or have to reschedule at the last minute, yet fully expect Dr. Growney and his staff to drop everything to fit me in when I have a dental emergency. They probably all think I am a prick (justifiably), but you would never know it from the 5 star treatment I receive on every visit. Dr. Growney and his staff are just good, genuine people who work hard to take the "suck" out of going to the dentist. One minor gripe - the women who work here are all quite fetching. This may sound like a silly complaint but I have a thing about hot chicks seeing me so vulnerable - splayed in a chair with my gross, cigarette/booze stained mouth open like a empty clam shell. Best dentist ever. Fast, polite, funny. His Marina location has friendly gentle hygienists and is easy to get in and out of. The EMB location is state of the art, I had my wisdom teeth pulled there under his supervision. He is shockingly young! Just turned 30 in 07. Doles out the gas if you want it. Can't say enough how glad I am that I found Growney. Super nice. A cool guy. Clearly an expert, very personable, and always attentive to my concerns...that I'm comfortable in the chair, with what station the personal TV is tuned to, that I'm comfortable with the dental work, etc... I like that he never pressures or tries to upsell. I won't go into the things I needed done, but he was very kind and clear about all my different options, what each option meant, and what they would cost. He's also very careful to make sure I don't go over my yearly insurance deductible if I can help it. He's great. I've liked all his assistants as well as the other dentists I've met at the office. What can I say. Fast, efficient, friendly, and good. I got there at 11:53 for my 12pm appt- sat down to fill out the new patient ppwk- and when I was done they were ready to take me back. I had to get my veneer recemented and walked out of there at 12:30. The front desk staff were friendly and chatty- which I love, and it was in network with metlife dental which I love MORE. I've been seeing Dr. Growney ever since a friend recommended him to me when I moved to the city in 2011 and have had a great experience so far. He and his staff are professional, flexible and go out of their way to make sure you are comfortable and satisfied. I needed a complicated (and expensive) procedure done to replace a bridge on my front teeth and I had been putting it off for years.. I've been coming to Growney for years. I've always looked forward to the upbeat atmosphere, great hygienist, and welcoming receptionist. They've always made me feel welcome and comfortable. But WOW have things changed over there! I wish I was forewarned about asking the replacement receptionist Robin a question. She more or less ripped my head off! When I asked to talk to someone else she made a nasty comment and made me feel like I had no other option. Shes the be all and end all. With that being said Im sad to say I will not be returning to this office. Dr. Growney is simply the BEST dentist I have ever seen, anywhere. And I've seen a few dentists in my life from London to New York to Beverly Hills. His attention to detail, level of care, and chairside manner are what every dentist should aspire to have. Somehow Dr. Growney made what was a tedious and complicated root canal feel like like a simple, easy, quick and painless procedure! He is kind, sincere, funny, extremely knowledgeable and very thorough. I was referred to another dentist in Dr. Growney's office for a serious broken/chipped tooth emergency. All I could think was, here comes my first root canal...well, I arrived and Dr. Growney made me feel immediately at ease. After evaluating the tooth, come to find root canal was not needed (yay), and he did a great job redoing my two front teeth. They look exactly like they did before, As an anxious patient, I truly appreciated his patient, pleasant demeanor. I would not hesitate to visit Dr. Growney again for any work. read more

In a city where you can get gouged at places with fancy waiting rooms in several different service industries like veterinarians, massage therapy centers, acupuncturists, and of course dental offices (I'm looking at you King St Dental), where the discrepancy of service doesn't remotely match the price tag, Dr. Growney, and the other dentists at this office manage to offer top notch care, a strong front staff, and a comfortable setting even though they don't have a waterfall in their waiting room. My anecdote should provide a little perspective on this claim: I had an odd/scary looking mouth ulcer which I get from time to time from stress and other elements that I had convinced myself was oral cancer. My ENT doc couldn't see me for two weeks and while I scoured the internet in hypochondria fervor, I had clearly convinced myself that I had oral cancer and also learned that dentists are often referred to by ENT physicians on such matters. At 1pm I called their office and told them I was freaking out about this and at 3pm Dr Growney called me and said "well I'm done for the day, but come on in when you can and I'll take a look." He quickly gave me a thorough and anxiety relieving diagnosis. The appointment took about 10 minutes and he told his nurse not to charge me. We then talked about our families, work, life, etc - again, the whole interaction including the appointment was 10 minutes, I wished that there were more Dr. Growner's in this city. Side note: King Street Dental had ZERO regard for my out of pocket expenses and was just another Pets Unlimited or Spa J'Adore. Businesses who offer satisfactory services while constantly trying to figure out how to squeeze more money out of you. Dr. Growner and Ann Donnelly (my wife's dentist in the same building) offer excellent care w/o the bs marina upsell. If you read this, thanks again, doc. read more

I can't believe I never reviewed Dr. Growney! He is awesome and so is the staff at the office. I never had to wait long for an appointment (to book or when I arrived) and there is parking at the motel next door = easy peasy. My cleanings were always excellent and no one judged me for smoking, not flossing, etc. I had some cavities filled and they were painless and smooth, and I never felt rushed here. Dr. Growney also helped me get a bite guard that I am still using years later - so it was expensive but great quality and totally worth it. I also chipped a front tooth once and he gave me an emergency appointment and fixed it perfectly - I moved and my new dentist did not even know it had been done (and this was a significant snaggletooth, ugh). I had a variety of insurance coverage over the years and the billing staff always worked with me to make sure claims were paid. After a routine cleaning, a small blemish on one of my crowns was found, and I was given an opportunity to come in the very next day to get it completely replaced. Dr. Growney was a delight to work with and his amazing staff (Dulce, among others) was courteous, professional, and extremely friendly. During the hour-long procedure, they had a tv screen on a mechanical arm that they brought within eye-sight, so I could watch the Saturday morning basketball games on ESPN while they worked. I wouldn't hesitate for a second to recommend Dr. Growney to anyone. He's professional, informative, funny, and immensely helpful. I came in mildly freaked out because of a chipped tooth. He took care of it in a matter of minutes, warning me that the filling won't completely blend in. I had no idea what he was talking about after he was done. It looked GREAT! He also pointed out another chipped tooth which I'd ignored for a very long time. Seeing how quickly he did this one, I went ahead and agreed to an appointment to fix up the older chip.
