So I have never spent more than $15 on a haircut in my life. I usually go to those lovely Super/Trend Cuts and/or Great Clips, or something of the same mediocre quality. But I wanted something new with my hair, and I didn't want some random person to fuck it up. So I decided to go to this joint, and I'm glad I did. Now, granted I don't have much experience with nicer salons, but this one was great. My hair was done by Seth Parker, and he did a great job. The price was acceptable to me, $30. And for the amount of time he spent on it, it should have cost more. You can make an appointment online which I loved. I hate talking on the phone to make an appointment, so the online booking was great. The salon is nice. Not located in the best place, but it was nice. I think they should just pick it up and plop it in midtown, but that's really me being too picky. The shampoo and scalp massage is fan-freakin-tastic. LOVED IT! And my hair looks great. I will have to get used to my new style, but it will be fun. So, yes, I do plan to go back. Even though it's more than I'm used to spending, I think it's worth it. OK, so I have been getting my hair done at KMS for about a year now, and there are probably 467 reasons why I love, love, love love it. First and foremost, my hair looks great. I see Rachel Aston and she does an absolutely fabulous job. My hair has never been healthier, and I feel like she actually listens when I tell her what I want -- oh, and she gives the world's BEST scalp massage when she shampoos. I haven't had my hair done by Kevin, but I have seen his work and it always looks amazing, too. I also love the atmosphere. It's a small salon, but I love that about it. Reading over these reviews, I have noticed that some people have commented on the location. Is the building itself the trendiest or newest? No. But, they have done a great job decorating it on the inside, and the products/ appliances they use are just as good as anything you will find in the more expensive midtown salons. Plus, it's located right on the border of Land Park & Midtown, so it's super convenient for those of us who live in Land Park/ Pocket. Oh, and another bit about convenience -- you can book appointments ONLINE! I love that. But, as always, it really comes down to the people. It took me over a year after moving here from SoCal to find a place where I felt comfortable with the atmosphere and the prices. Twice I went to one of the big salons in midtown (I won't mention names but it starts with an "M", ends with a "C" and cost me $300 for a highlight and cut before tip), before realizing that I could actually fly down to San Diego and get my hair done there for what that place was charging. Rachel's prices are much more reasonable, and I don't feel like I'm on parade at the hipster club while under foils. All in all, I completely love KMS. I cannot recommend highly enough. read more

I was introduced to Kevin through a very trusted, known, and talented industry professional in LA nearly 10 years ago. As I traveled back home to the Sacramento area often, and he came highly recommended, I thought I'd give him a try--and I am not someone to trust easily right away, especially with my hair. I JUST came back from Kevin Michael Salon for a cut. Summer was my stylist, and she is AMAZING! The prices are great for a salon with such talented stylists. She washed, cut and styled. I'm the kinda person that will literally cry over a bad haircut for weeks, and I told Summer of my fears. She gave me the best cut with long layers I've ever had. I was referred to her by my girlfriend, after she and her mom both got great cuts....so i know she's consistently awesome. The products they use are great, and unlike all other salons, they don't try to put a gun to your head to force you to buy them after they use them on you. Love that. The salon is super cute. To those people whining about the location not being in midtown, I'd rather have a cute salon with cheaper rent (meaning better prices for us customers). Unlike midtown, there is PLENTY of non-metered parking right out front. Next I'm trying their spa services (wax/facials) because your first visit is half off! woo hoo, needed a walk-in haircut on a saturday afternoon when my salon was closed. My man says "let's try that salon on 15th over by Tower Theater." I walk in and am promptly greeted by Kevin himself. Ask if they have any walk-in times available, he checks the computer, asks me politely to wait a sec while he checks with a stylist, and books me for an appt with Angie w/in the hour. He asks if I'd like to stay and wait, offered me coffee or tea, but i boogied on home and came back an hour later. Angie is awesome. Got my hair washed and cut in a diagonal cut, short in the back exactly how i wanted it. The salon was fun, the chitter chatter was not personal, in fact some of the ladies in and out sounded really happy with the salon. Kevin Michael's Salon knows how to make you feel at home. The Salon: The salon is the perfect size with a warm and welcoming ambiance. You're always welcomed with a smile, a place for your coat and purse and a cup of coffee (if you want one). The Eufora hair products they sell and use are amazing. I love that Kevin chose salon/hair products that are "green" and don't test on animals. Location: I don't mind the (sorta new) location really. It's close to the freeway and within walking distance to Starbucks, Jamba Juice, Tower Cafe and Target. Kevin and crew: I love the people here. The salon is always full of happy people telling jokes. Even the customers are friendly and fun to joke around with. Your hair cut comes with an amazing shampoo/head massage/warm towel and styling. It's nice. If you have to change your appointment, they get you in as soon as possible. I've never had issues with changing my appointments. Kevin knows how to make your hair work. If you aren't happy with the color or cut, he's more than happy to work with you to get it how you want it. Kevin has a happy and easy to talk to personality. I have been a loyal customer for the past 7 years because Kevin Michael cares. I've been coming to KMS since Fall of 07......back when they were still on 16th Street behind Ernesto's. I miss that location :( I like the new location too but it's on the other side of the bridge. Us midtown people don't like going anywhere pass the bridge lol. The new location is smaller but cozy. All the stylists are in one room not like the old location where they had different rooms and 2 stylists per room. KMS is a fun place and a very chill environment......most hair salons are not. They offer all kind of services here... Haircut, Hair-coloring, Styling, Facials, Waxing, Make-Up, and they even have a retail store inside (hair products/face creams/lotion). They currently have 3 Stylists on staff...my fav is Mr. Kevin Michael himself. He's very nice and he talks A LOT lol. Which is great because he makes my time there very enjoyable...and I spend a lot of time there. He's really good at what he does. Just tell him what you want and he will work his magic on your hair. The things that man can do with scissors. I'm really difficult when it comes to my hair. When I walk into the Salon I have a certain haircut that I want in my mind. Post haircut...if I don't like that cut on me Kevin Michael would not hestitate to give me a different cut without charging any extra fees. His prices are reasonable compared to other salons around the downtown/midtown area. My last haircut was back in May when I went in to get my hair chopped off for Locks of Love. Kevin Michael took $5 off my haircut because I was donating it. Heart him! If you want to book an appt with Kevin Michael make sure you call about 2-3 weeks in advance. He's a very busy man. If you can't wait 2-3 weeks ask the receptionist to put your name on the waiting list and most of the time he'll get a cancellation or 2 and will get you in sooner. read more

This review is not so much for the salon, although it is quaint, but most certainly for the superstar genius hairstylist, Elly Kubota. She is a hair goddess walking amongst us, a muse for the hipster hair styles that speckle the midtown streets, a dependable beacon of hope for all those who are lost. I can't rave enough about her. I have been going to Elly for almost 4 years now, with the exception of last year since I moved to Portland. I have followed her career to 3 different midtown salons. Since moving to Portland I have experienced two of the most awful cuts ever, and seem to run into the same fate over and over. Most hairstylists just don't listen. They see your hair as they want to and not as you have so long imagined it. After those awful experiences I said no more. I will never ever go to any other hairstylist as long as I live. No amount of desperation will force me astray again. I came back to Elly recently and she performed a hair miracle. I feel like me again. Now if this review seems a bit shallow and dramatic, so be it. I, however, value the relief and confidence that a good haircut can do for the soul. Prices here run around $50-$60 for a cut and that includes the most amazing scalp massage and wash, cut, and a great style (especially for those of us blessed with curly hair, she's a pro at blowing out those curls). read more

I was looking for a new aesthetician in my neighborhood. I found a review of Windy (yes, Windy not Wendy) on Yelp and gave it a try. She is...incredible. A 75 minute facial with Windy is everything a facial should be. I didn't think I could find anyone as good as Elizabeth at LaBelle Stanford in Palo Alto, but Windy is incredible. She is very skilled, makes my skin glow and includes a fantastic massage amidst the other traditional facial components. The only negative has nothing to do with Windy, but the hair salon noise, conversation and music does tend to compete with the relaxing music in Windy's facial room. I tend to overlook this, mainly because I am pretty much almost asleep at many points throughout the facial as it is so relaxing. Thank you Windy! read more

Where are more stars when you need them?! I'd give ten. Seriously. Number one: I've never been moved to write a review on Yelp. Number two: I live in Portland and wait to get my haircut until I'm in Sacto JUST so I can stick with Kevin! (I used to live here.) I tried finding a new stylist but NOTHING compares once you've seen Kevin! I also noticed Leah transform a 'bad dye job' from another salon and though I haven't had a cut with her, clearly she's gotten some 'Kevin magic' just by being around him! What makes Kevin so fantastic is not just his skill. He CARES. He takes his time and isn't satisfied until he's clear that he can walk home knowing that he did a great job and gave the customer his full attention. That's something you can feel. I've never been to anyone else like him and hope not to ever have to! You won't regret it if you go. And, be sure to book far in advance ... word is getting out that he's fantastic and last I heard he was booked out until August! read more

The review and stars are for my last visit, as previous experiences were good. Sorry to read from another review that Holly is gone, I went to her a couple times and she did a good job. This last time, it was a last minute thing for me, so I just asked for anyone who was available. They gave me three options with the only person available. Should have been a clue. It was in the afternoon and dude was real busy making plans for the evening and chatting with other customers (which I don't mind at all, I am there for a hair cut, not to make a friend). Seemed nice enough, but then things got weird. He asked if I wanted my hair blown out, and I said that wasn't necessary (cause he clearly had stuff to do and I always go home from getting my hair blown out to wet it down to get rid of the excessive pouffiness). He kind of seemed to lose his stride at that point. He did blow part of it, said it was necessary to cutting it (area around my face) and moments later said we were done. It was rather abrupt. Now, I should have been more careful and inspected more (I was relaxing and spacing out while he was cutting), but I guess what he did was just stop cutting my hair right in the middle. Within a couple days it looked like I hadn't gotten a cut at all, except a couple things stuck out funny. I went elsewhere the next week and the woman cutting me said that the back had "holes" where someone started layering, but maybe didn't finish, or just layered tons in one spot and not at all in another, very inconsistent. I don't think he cut around my face much at all. Hey, maybe the guy is awesome and just had a bad day. If anyone knows where Holly went I would like to know! edit, just want to mention that wasn't my only experience, and everyone has have a distracted hour at work a few times. I'm sure if I'd gone back and said "dude, wtf?" it would have been cool. went four times, and they are 3-1. read more

AWESOME!!!! My husband has been going here for a few years now, and when I moved to the area I tagged along with him...Soooo glad I did! I am really picky with who touches my hair - I went to the same hairdresser for 16 years and refused to go anywhere else, even after I moved out of area. Then I moved countries and couldn't go there any more, so I let my hair grow, and grow and grow. Flash forward a few years later and my hair was down to my butt. When I first started going to Kevin, all I wanted him to do (I'm sure much to his dismay) was to trim the ends. I had gotten very attached to my long mane and wasn't ready to do anything with it that resulted in losing more than half an inch. He somehow managed to make it look great, even by just taking the bare minimum off of it. Then one day, I decided enough was enough, and decided to get it cut for real. Despite my big decision, I was still pretty nervous about getting it shorter, but Kevin was fantastic about it and made me fee totally at ease. He then proceeded to give me an fantastic below shoulder cut, which I was in love with - despite holding 15 inches of hair in my hand ( I donated it). I live in San Jose and work in San Francisco, so could go to any number of highly rated salons, but I refuse to. I (and my husband) are more than happy to travel from here to Sac just to get our hair cut with Kevin. Also, not only is he an amazing stylist, he is also just a great guy. Funny, sweet and so creative. And I couldn't finish this review without mentioning miss Kelly too - whilst I have not had my hair cut by her, I have had it washed by her and witnessed her work, which is also awesome - as is she! So, in short, do yourself a favor and get over to the salon - you won't regret it!! read more

After trying to find a local salon for my son's back to school hair cut, I settled on this one because of the other Yelp reviews. We weren't disappointed. First of all, we were greeted with great warmth immediately by both the owner and the other staff person there. Even the client in the owner's chair was nice! We had to wait a few minutes for Rachael to arrive, but we were a few minutes early too. Rachael was super nice as she tried to both accomodate what "mom" wanted and what the "client" may want. She totally communicated to his level and made him comfortable. He is still talking about his first "salon shampoo". He got a great cut at a high service level (but not crazy salon pricing).
